Abstract:
Androcentrism refers to the propensity to center society around men and men’s needs, priorities, and values and to relegate women to the periphery. Androcentrism also positions men as the gender-neutral standard while marking women as gender-specific. Examples of androcentrism include the use of male terms (e.g., he), images, and research participants to represent everyone. Androcentrism has been shown to have serious consequences. For example, women’s health has been adversely affected by over-generalized medical research based solely on male participants. Nonetheless, relatively little is known about androcentrism’s proximate psychological causes. In the present review, we propose a social cognitive perspective arguing that both social power and categorization processes are integral to understanding androcentrism. We present and evaluate three possible pathways to androcentrism deriving from (a) men being more frequently instantiated than women, (b) masculinity being more “ideal” than femininity, and/or (c) masculinity being more common than femininity.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT: Starting from a critical reading of works on the history of African philosophy, introduction to African philosophies and anthologies specialized in this area, this paper aims to problematize the paradoxical position of denouncing the intellectual exclusion of African philosophical thought, while ending up promoting an epistemic marginalization of female philosophers African. By signaling that androcentrism structures the fundamental core of works that introduce and disseminate African philosophical thought, the paper adds to the efforts to radicalize the anti-exclusionary perspective of the practice of African philosophies, pointing to the need for a critical review of these diffusion works and training in philosophy. Abstract:
How can Marcuse's critical theory contribute to the development of critical education in Canada? In which ways might Marcuse's theory undermine it? Starting from what critical education is, and then what it is not, the discussion attempts to answer these questions. They are especially pressing, given the difficulties found in "re-inventing" the theory and practice of Paulo Freire within North America. Marcuse's approach to ideology and the construction of psycho-sexuality within this context may help to understand and transcend these difficulties. However, his critical theory is itself in need of criticism. Notably, instead of abolishing the oppression of women, one of the main aims of critical education, Marcuse's theory may indeed have the effect of adding to it.

Advertising on Sports Programming in Spanish Radio: An Analysis from a Gender Perspective Abstract: The characteristics of sports programming in Spanish radio make a really interesting field for research on radio advertising, especially from the perspective of gender. In this article, we can see the advertising representation of women in sports programming, certainly a masculinized sphere. We reached this conclusion after analysing different aspects of advertising, as the voices or the language used. For this purpose, we base our research on ads included in different sport programs from varied stations, which have been collected during the years 2004, 2006/07 and 2009/10. Abstract: In her book Mujeres y discursos gerenciales. Hacia la autogestión feminista (2020), Medina-Vicent approaches management discourses aimed at women from a critical feminist perspective, revealing the androcentrism and the presence and perpetuation of traditional gender roles and stereotypes in management models. My proposal aims to highlight two aspects of Medina-Vicent’s analysis: on the one hand, to highlight the dangers of depoliticizing management discourses aimed at women - especially insofar as management literature ends up informing us all. On the other hand, the author’s critique of the co-optation of feminism by these discourses will be explored in greater depth.

Recent findings indicate that a slow Life History (LH) strategy factor is associated with increased levels of Executive Functioning (EF), increased emotional intelligence, decreased levels of sexually coercive behaviors, and decreased levels of negative ethnocentrism. Based on these findings, as well as the generative theory, we predicted that slow LH strategy should inhibit negative androcentrism (bias against women). A sample of undergraduates responded to a battery of questionnaires measuring various facets of their LH Strategy, (e.g., sociosexual orientation, mating effort, mate-value, psychopathy, executive functioning, and emotional intelligence) and various convergent measures of Negative Androcentrism. A structural model that the data fit well indicated a latent protective LH strategy trait predicted decreased negative androcentrism. This trait fully mediated the relationship between participant biological sex and androcentrism. We suggest that slow LH strategy may inhibit negative attitudes toward women because of relatively decreased intrasexual competition and intersexual conflict among slow LH strategists. In this work we will take up again the contributions of the feminist philosophy of science around androcentrism, with special emphasis on biology and biomedical sciences. We will propose that such contributions can be ordered according to three different senses of androcentrism, and that important tensions appear between these senses. Following the path traced by Longino, contextual critical empiricism, we will defend that the rational reconstruction of theories can help us to specify where patriarchal decision vectors crouch in scientific practice. To this end, we will present an alternative analysis to Longino’s and use it as an input to discuss the idea of type brains in the framework of the neuroendocrinology of behaviour.

Wood's article (1995) was evaluated for its comments on exchange theory and male-female differences in relationships. The author, in disagreement with Wood, believes that despite its androcentric origins, exchange theory, of itself, is not androcentric. Moreover, it is neither necessarily oriented toward personal gain nor lacking in process, as Wood claims. Last, the research literature does not warrant talking about men and women as having basically different ways of relating. A review of works by others and the author is marshalled in support of the author's claims.

This paper looks at the views or constructions of Chinese peranakan authors towards women in that era. Issues discussed: (1) how Peranakan authors narrate women in their works; (2) the reasons for the Chinese Peranakan authors in the 1950s-1960s to narrate women. This study uses the point of view of feminist literary criticism. The object of this research is the 1950-1960s short stories and the author's perspective on women. The data of this research is the narrative of short stories that describe the image of women, the author's social construction, and the idea of androcentrism. The data interpretation technique follows the way of feminist literary criticism. The results of the study: (1) women are presented and controlled by men and are controlled by social construction; (2) the idea of morality and the economic context becomes a construction that the author interprets through androcentrism; (3) morality is misinterpreted by male authors and women as victims who are silenced in the name of morality. It has resulted in women being unable to speak up and follow androcentrism in the name of tradition and the sacred concept of morality. Morality is misinterpreted as sexuality and borne by women.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ecofeminism introduced in 1974 by Françoise d’Eaubonne links ecological and gender-equality issues together. It exposes an intimate connection between women and nature, and addresses the parallels between the patriarchal logic of male power over female and humans’ domination over nature. This new approach in literary-criticism takes anthropocentrism and androcentrism as the roots of human-nature and male-female dualism respectively. Moreover, “Shakespeare Plus”, a new researching trend in Shakespeare criticism, involves three important topics of “the Domestic” “Subject-Object” and “Knowledge-Making” that ecofeminism concerns in re-examining Shakespeare’s works. This paper focuses on many natural images in A Midsummer Night’s Dream directly or indirectly related to humans especially female characters to reveal how anthropocentrism and androcentrism affect mankind-nature and male-female relationships and interpret ecofeminist thoughts revealed in them from the subjects of “the Domestic” “Subject-Object Relations” and “Knowledge-Making”. The findings, for one thing, show that affected by androcentrism and anthropocentrism humans think male-female and human-nature relationships dualistically without understanding the world in a comprehensive, equal and diversified way; for another, humans, nonhuman natural objects and other things not known or predictable yet, are interrelated. Therefore, only tolerance and equality are given to this plural world, can harmony be realized in human-nature and male-female relations.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since the 20th century with the birth of feminism, gender studies have undergone analysis in many areas of knowledge. Special attention has been paid to the theory of androcentricity in the English language and the deficiency of female images in speech. In this article, the images of men and women presented by English proverbs and anti-proverbs are analyzed. The objective of this research is to find out if proverbs are androcentric and present male mindsets and world views. The other aim is to check whether anti-proverbs reflect the changing role of women in society. To fulfill these purposes, proverbs with gender components (man/woman, wife/husband, he/she etс.) were selected and underwent a semantic analysis. In order to reveal the evolution of the images of men and women we compared the images of men and women illustrated in proverbs with those shown in anti-proverbs with the same gender components. As a result, we came to the conclusion that both proverbs and anti-proverbs are androcentric; however, in anti-proverbs female opinions are more representative when compared to proverbs. To sum up, it is obvious that the role of women is changing and the changes are reflected in the language.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study seeks to investigate the existence of androcentrism in school textbooks used in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. It attempts to unveil potential implicit biases ingrained in the language of these textbooks. The data for this study is derived from a corpus comprising six textbooks, encompassing a variety of courses representing the GCC secondary level education systems. The employed methodological approach entailed content analysis, wherein categories were discerned directly from the textual data during a comprehensive examination of the textbooks. The established framework facilitated the classification of gendered linguistic references into three distinct categories: nouns, verbs, and pronouns. The principal findings highlight preferential representation of male students and, consequently, underrepresentation of female students, permeating almost the entire research corpus. Contrary to assumptions suggesting an intrinsic gender bias within the Arabic language, this investigation argues that the locus of androcentrism seems to be rooted in the authors of the scrutinized textbooks. This discernment contributes valuable insights challenging prevailing notions and accentuates the role of textbook authors in shaping linguistic biases.
