Abstract:
His paper is a literature review to explain the Androgyny theory of types of games in shaping the understanding of children's gender roles. The androgyny theory is expected to be able to change people's views about people's understanding of gender and gender which is very influential in the selection of games for young children so that it is considered very important to understand the difference between sex and gender.

Abstract:
The concept of androgyny appears in social psychology as an adaptive mixture of masculine and feminine traits unlinked to any age-specific schedule of development. The life cycle developmental view of androgyny is that sex-typed behavior is found early in the life cycle, in response to the “chronic emergency of parenthood,” but that in later life each sex recaptures the prerogatives surrendered earlier in adulthood—women recovering managerial, assertive traits, and men becoming more responsive to their needs for nurturance and dependency. This article proposes a reconciliation of social and developmental models of androgyny based on an analysis of Greek tragedy. The Bacchae, written by Euripides in his old age, suggests that the androgynous individual is advantaged throughout the life cycle, as social psychologists would claim today. However, the fate of Pentheus at the hands of Dionysus suggests that anxieties over the androgynous potential of the self may be heightened in young adulthood and ebb later in life, consistent with developmental observations of sex-typed behavior in young adulthood which gives way to the “normal unisex of later life.” A review of androgyny in psychoanalytic theory and literary criticism shows that recognition of androgyny is not new, but that each recognition has been short-lived—a problem in the sociology of knowledge which suggests that the fear of androgyny reaches into the scientific community.

Asghar, Adam. "Theory of mind, empathy and androgyny in psychopathic disorder." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.487651.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis mainly focuses on the conceptualisation that the symptoms of psychopathic disorder are a function of selectively impaired empathy abilities. Those with apsychopathic disorder are considered to be manipulative and predatory, callous towards others and substantially lacking in empathy or guilt for the harm they do to others. Recent initiatives have attempted to devised interventions for psychopathy, yet the outcomes are not encouraging. A failure to understand its aetiology may explain poor treatment outcomes. The literature review summarises studies that have examined the Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities of those with a psychopathic disorder. The literature is critically evaluated in terms of methodologies: it is reasoned that the conclusions ofthe reviewed studies are likely to be a consequence oftheir methodologies rather a representation of a psychopathic disorder. Although the authors of these studies concluded that cognitive empathy is intact within psychopathy and thereby explains their tendencies, this extrapolation and its subsequent generalisation across different populations is reasoned to be untenable. The empirical Pllper addresses the methodological critiques raised in the literature review and aims to construct a more robust methodology. In doing so, this paper investigated the relationship between cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, ToM and androgyny within psychopathy. In contrast to the published literature, this study identified that cognitive empathy is not a determinant of psychopathic tendencies and that ToM is impaired in this disorder. As expected, emotional empathy was also found to be impaired. Gender, however, mediates the relationship between these measures and thereby identifies that there is not a simple linear relationship between them. The reflective review discusses personal, professional and research reflections relating to this thesis. Discussion is focused on the political and professional implications to psychopathy and its treatment, and exploring the evidence that informs on its conceptualisation and how this impacts on our understanding of treatment outcomes.

Abstract:
Zinaida Gippius's literary works are striking for the development of the theme of androgyny.<br>Chapter One examines the major Russian Symbolist intellectuals in their treatment of androgyny, which was animated by a desire to transfigure the world. Gippius's treatment of androgyny was at odds with the prevailing theory because it was not based on the defeminization of humanity.<br>Chapter Two addresses Gippius's reconstruction of Symbolist androgyny theory and explains the rejection of gender-based motivation in her metaphysical system by its orientation toward personality and an awareness of God.<br>Chapter Three shows how she used her poetry and prose to advance her belief that a perfect, androgynous love could reunite humanity with God. While Gippius's prose describes the search for this type of love, her poetry deals with it as a lyric experience.<br>The religious motivations of Gippius's redefinition of Symbolist androgyny indicate the need to re-evaluate the place of Orthodox Christianity in the evolution of Russian Symbolism.

Sepulveda, Maria C. "Centered Fluidity and the Horizons of Continuity in Djuna Barnes' Nightwood." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/746.

Full text
Abstract:
Modern writers like Djuna Barnes allow for the post-modern fluidity and explosion of sex and gender without finalizing either in a fixed form. Whereas the classical, archetypal androgyne is made up of two halves, one man and one woman; the deconstructed androgynous figure is not constituted of oppositional terms which would reflect an essential and unimpeachable truth. I reveal the way Djuna Barnes’ Nightwood not only thematizes the fluid androgyne, but also cleverly verbalizes David Wood’s perpetual and un-dischargable “debt” to extra-discursivity while poetically critiquing gender “appropriateness,” societal constraints, and the constitution of identity. Barnes presents a decentralized, ungrounded and non-prescribed world in Nightwood not only through her cross-dressing and androgynous characters, but also in her poetics, her assertion of the open-ended quality of language, and a strong imperative to negotiate our physical existence in a world of fluid gender and sexual boundaries.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyze the figure of androgyny from the movements of Symbolism to the abstract avant-garde. This reinterpretation of modernity at the turn of the 20th century in France allows an understanding of how Symbolism explored the trouble of sexuality within a social and political context entrenched by the crisis of masculinity. The visual and anthropological study of sexual norms reveals a fear of the androgynous in-between associated with psychopathological theories of homosexuality. This thesis demonstrates how androgyny is tied to what I call the artistic “third gender,” defined by the refusal of gender assignation and new models of representation and intersubjectivity, following the feminine immersion within the masculine. In the first part, the study of the Neoclassical and spiritual sources of androgyny demonstrates the search for the political and artistic ideal, allowing for the regeneration of the unity of sex. The second part reveals the resurgence of this ideal in the fin-de-siècle Symbolist's practices through different androgynous models such as the figure of the angel, the ones of Orpheus and the primitive third sex. Toward the trouble of sexual identities, the reception of idealism is analyzed through the rhetoric of degeneration associating androgyny, masculine effeminacy and homosexuality. The last part examines the pursuit of the androgynous ideal in the sources of abstraction. The abstract third sex nourishes the avant-gardist utopia of an art that is self-perpetuating, devoid of sexual characteristic and led by a modern artist, single and androgynous

Mathye, Hlamalani Ruth. "The image of women in selected Tsonga novels." Diss., 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2135.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a critical examination of selected Tsonga novels by male and female writers. Positive and negative images of women by these authors are analysed, compared and evaluated from a feminist perspective. Emphasis is laid on the manner in which Tsonga writers portray female characters in a changing society and the extent to which the images of women in this literature represent the present day woman. Adherence to ideological, cultural and traditional values as well as the differences in portrayal of women by male and female writers is also investigated. Through a comparison of novels written by male and female writers it is established that because of patriarchy these writers differ markedly in their portrayal of female characters. In all the novels analysed, the sociol-cultural context influences the way in which these writers portray female characters. Male writers promote traditional values which female writers strive to discard by portraying female characters who predominantly undermine stereotypical cultural sex-roles.<br>African languages<br>M.A. (African languages)

Abstract:
The incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) has risen dramatically in the last years. This event may be partially explained by the employment of digital rectal examination (DRE), serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and transrectal ultrasonography. In developed countries, PCa is the most frequent non-skin malignancy in males. It is estimated that one in six males will be diagnosed with PCa during their lifetime, the risk of death due to metastatic PCa being 1 in 30. Multiple factors contribute to the development of PCa, as well as to its progression to an androgen-independent state: dietary factors, inherited susceptibility factors, gene defects, and androgens and their receptors. The chapter will discuss the following topics: high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN); atypical small acinar proliferation; morphological criteria for the identification of PCa; reporting of PCa biopsies; prognostic factors in radical prostatectomies (RPs); and specimens.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of three adrenal diseases: adrenal insufficiency, primary aldosteronism (hyperaldosteronism), and phaeochromocytoma. Adrenal insufficiency is a disorder characterized by impaired adrenocortical function. In primary adrenal insufficiency, destruction of the adrenal cortex results in a decreased production of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and/or androgens. Secondary adrenal insufficiency is due to disordered pituitary and hypothalamic function resulting in decreased secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone or corticotrophin-releasing hormone, with consequent reduction in glucocorticoid and/or androgen secretion. Aldosterone is produced in the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex. Abnormal overproduction of aldosterone results in autonomous primary hyperaldosteronism, leading to hypertension and hypokalaemia. Phaeochromocytomas are rare tumours of the adrenal medulla, arising from chromaffin cells, and produce catecholamines. Tumours arising from extra-adrenal ganglia, both sympathetic and parasympathetic, are called paragangliomas. As the majority of sympathetic paragangliomas secrete catecholamines, they are also called extra-adrenal phaeochromocytomas.

Abstract:
This chapter studies how individuals may invent alternative gendered identities from available gender topoi. Memoirs by Donna Williams and Dawn Prince-Hughes, along with blogs and online forum posts, reveal that autistic individuals offer alternative understandings of gender, using and combining disidentificatory or idiosyncratic terms such as nongendered and third gender or combining terms such as trans, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and androgyne. Indeed, when autistic individuals write about feeling nongendered or ungendered, they contest hegemonic genders and develop new types of gendered characters with which to present themselves and their experiences. Thus, genders can be invented using available terms, in that some autistic individuals employ a gender copia, or multiplicity of gendered topoi, to understand themselves and their roles in the world.

“Female Sexual Biochemistry” reviews the key hormones and neurotransmitters that have a major role in female sexuality. Estrogens—estradiol, estrone, and estriol—as well as major androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are presented with a discussion of their role in the support of the reproductive organs and genitals as well as their actions on the central nervous system to affect sexual desire, arousal, and responsiveness. The interaction and regulation of estrogen by progesterone and thyroid hormone is included. A review of the dual-control model of sexual responsiveness is presented, including excitatory and inhibitory factors, as well as a summary of major neurotransmitters that work to enhance sexual arousal or inhibit it. The sexual response cycle is reviewed and relevant changes in pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause, and menopause are presented. Finally, there is mention of how synthetic hormones and environmental toxins with hormone activity may alter a woman’s sexual response.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how early Christians thought about gender inequality in the ancient world. Many contemporaries of Paul believed that women and men should be equal. Some drew upon the ancient myth of the primordial, first-created androgyne to imagine a future in which everyone would be restored to the original, androgynous image of God and, in the meantime, engaged in various creative exercises in gender-bending as a way of living out their hopes. Others believed that women should have power and authority equal to that of men and organized their communities accordingly. This was Paul’s view. Still others, however, embraced a more conventional, hierarchical view of gender, and even used Paul’s name and authority to enforce it. This is the story of how the church became a reflection of the patriarchal world into which it was born, and ultimately one of the last defenders of patriarchy in the civilized world.

Abstract:
The testis descends in response to androgen stimulation in the third trimester of pregnancy. Germ cell maturation which normally occurs in early childhood is impaired or absent in undescended testes. The well-documented phenomenon of secondary ascent is now thought to account for a sizeable proportion of boys undergoing orchidopexy in later childhood. Inguinal hernias and communicating hydroceles are caused by persistence of a patent processus vaginalis. Surgery is always indicated for inguinal hernias but the majority of communicating hydroceles resolve spontaneously. Testicular torsion accounts for 90% acute scrotal symptoms in adolescents, in whom urgent surgical exploration is mandatory unless there is compelling evidence of an alternative diagnosis. Treatment is rarely justified for asymptomatic varicoceles in this age group.

Abstract:
For over 40 years, physicians have been aware of the importance of hormonal changes associated with male ageing. As patients now expect to live full and rewarding lives into their eighties and nineties, it has become less acceptable to merely dismiss bothersome symptoms such as excessive tiredness, poor concentration, altered mood, depression, and sexual dysfunction as merely a consequence of the normal ageing process. Androgens are now known to play important roles in cardiometabolic disease, but little attention has been paid to this within current medical and urological education. The wide range of symptoms associated with the hormonal aspects of ageing spans many medical specialities with the result that no single discipline currently deals with these issues. Just as ageing women will remain under the care of gynaecologists, it is likely that the field of andrology must deal with the demands of this growing population of ageing men.

Abstract:
The effects of oxytocin and vasopressin on the brain and behavior can be sexually dimorphic, especially during the course of development (Bales, Kim, et al., 2004; Bales, Pfeifer, et al., 2004; Bales, Plotsky, et al., 2007; Bielsky et al., 2005a; Carter, 2003; Thompson et al., 2006; Yamamoto et al., 2005; Yamamoto et al., 2004). Given the sexual discrepancy observed in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), these two neuropeptides, oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP), have received attention for their potential role in ASDs (Green and Hollander, 2010; Insel et al., 1999; Leckman &amp; Herman, 2002; Welch et al., 2005; Winslow, 2005; Young et al., 2002). Changes in either OT or AVP and their receptors could be capable of influencing symptom domains or behaviors associated with ASDs. Arginine vasopressin is androgen dependent in some brain regions (De Vries &amp; Panzica, 2006), and males are more sensitive to AVP, especially during development. We hypothesize here that AVP, which has a unique role in males, must be present in optimal levels to be protective against ASDs. Either excess AVP or disruptions in the AVP system could play a role in development of the traits found in ASDs. In contrast, OT may possibly be secreted in response to adversity, especially in females, serving as a protective factor.

Abstract:
The clinical literature and recent studies in our laboratory using rodent models demonstrate that there are individual differences in androgens’ pleiotropic effects across the lifespan that need to be better understood. The question to address that challenges the field is that levels of androgens (current and/or prior) may not drive differing responses to androgens. The clinical example of Post-finasteride Syndrome, in which side-effects persist long after treatment is discontinued, supports investigations of this novel question relating to long-term effects of androgen manipulations, independent of existing levels of androgens.

Abstract:
Androgens stimulate primary ovarian development in Vertebrate. Japanese eels underwent operation to sample the pre- and post-treated ovarian tissues from the same individual. Ovarian phenotypic or genotypic data were mined in a pair. A correlation between the initial ovarian status (determined by kernel density estimation (KDE), presented as a probability density of oocyte size) and the consequence of androgen (17MT) treatment (change in ovary) has been showed. The initial ovarian status appeared to be important to influence ovarian androgenic sensitivity. The initial ovary was important to the outcomes of androgen treatments, and ePAV (expression presence-absence variation) is existing in Japanese eel by analyze DEGs; core, unique, or accessory genes were identified, the sensitivities of initial ovaries were correlated with their gene expression profiles. We speculated the importance of genetic differential expression on the variations of phenotypes by 17MT, and transcriptomic approach seems to allow extracting multiple layers of genomic data.

Abstract:
Parenchymal and stromal cells with the potential for normal breast development are equally present in prepubertal boys and girls. Men and women do not differ in sensitivity to the hormonal action of sex steroids, and therefore men have the same potential to develop breasts as women. Whether this actually occurs obviously depends on a person’s hormonal milieu. In order to understand the pathophysiology of gynaecomastia it is essential to know that breast tissue is, for its development, under control of both stimulatory hormonal action (oestrogens and progestogens) and inhibitory hormonal action of androgens. Gynaecomastia typically occurs when there is a relative dominance of oestrogenic over androgenic action; many cases of gynaecomastia are not the result of an overproduction of oestrogens per se, but rather due to the failing inhibitory action of androgens (1). In the assessment of gynaecomastia, as much attention must be paid to a potential source of feminizing hormones as to decreased androgen production or interference with the biological action of androgens. Oestrogens stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of parenchymal ductal elements while progesterone supports alveolar development. The biological actions of oestrogens and progesterone do not appear in cases of growth hormone deficiency. Prolactin stimulates the differentiated ducts to produce milk. Testosterone inhibits the growth and differentiation of breast development, probably through an antioestrogenic action (1). Whatever the cause, gynaecomastia shows the same histological developmental pattern. At first, there is florid ductal proliferation, with epithelial hyperplasia and increase in stromal and periductal connective tissue, with increased vascularity and periductal oedema. After approximately one year, there is increased stromal hyalinization, dilation of the ducts, and a marked reduction in epithelial proliferation, a ‘burnt-out’ phase of the condition. The result is inactive fibrotic tissue which no longer responds to endocrine therapy. Gynaecomastia is not an uncommon finding and most cases will not represent a serious medical condition. However, gynaecomastia may signify the presence of a malignancy producing oestrogens, aromatase (the enzyme that converts androgens to oestrogens), or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). Common locations of such tumours are the testis, lungs, liver or the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, cases of gynaecomastia must be taken seriously and the diagnostic approach must reasonably rule out a malignancy in order to avoid any undue delay in its diagnosis.

Abstract:
Introduction: Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) is a rare ovarian tumor, Constitute less than 0.5% of ovarian tumors. Most tumors are unilateral, confined to the ovaries. They are seen during the second and third decades of life. They are characterized by the presence of testicular structures that produce androgens. Patients have symptoms of virilization (depending on the quantity of androgen). Case Report: A 42-year-old woman presented Amenorrhea for 14 months. Change in her voice for 1 year and Excessive hair growth on her face, chest, and limbs for the last 2 months. She complained of vague abdominal discomfort. No history of anorexia, weight loss, increased libido. Her medical and family history was unremarkable. On examination - Hirsutism and clitoromegaly. Lump of size 10x8 cm palpable in left iliac fossa. Vaginal examination revealed a firm and mobile cystic mass in the right adnexa. An ultrasound examination of the pelvis showed a 17x 13x 9-cm heterogeneous solid cystic mass replacing the left ovary. The right ovary and the uterus were normal. CECT Scan Abdomen-Large heterogenous encapsulated solid soft tissue mass lesions containing areas of calcification arising from left ovary of size 17x13x10.6cm causing displacement of urinary bladder and surrounding bowel loops. Serum testosterone level -2 ng/mL (normal, 0.2–1.2 ng/mL); (DHEAS), CA 125, and alpha fetoprotein (AFP) -normal. On Laparotmy-Large mass of size 17 X 13 cm arising from left adnexa. Uterus and right ovary grossly normal. Total Abdominal hysterectomy, B/L Salpingo-opherectomy and infracolic omentectomy was done. Peritoneal washing were sent for cytologic examination for malignant cells. No liver metastasis. The post operative period was uneventful. Histopathology revealed- confirmed it be Sertoli Leydig cell tumor. 3month follow up – resolution of her virilization symptoms. No increase of her hirsutism. Repeat testosterone levels - within normal range. Conclusion: Only few cases of SLCT have been reported till date Prognosis depends on extent of disease, stage of disease, tumour differentiation, grade. The treatment should be individualized according to the location, state of spread and the patient’s condition.

Abstract:
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most frequently diagnosed malignancy, as well as a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men globally. Despite the initial response to hormonal targeted therapy, the majority of patients ultimately progress to a lethal form of the disease, termed as castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), which currently lacks curative therapeutic options and is associated with poor prognosis. Therefore, the development of novel treatment modalities for PCa is urgently needed. Chalcones, also known as 1,3-diphenyl-2-propen-1-ones, are among the highly attractive scaffolds being investigated for their antitumor activities. Three series of 18 cyclic (tetralone-based) and two acyclic chalcone analogs, in which ring B was either substituted with nitrogen mustard or replaced by pyrrole or pyridine heterocyclic rings, were designed, synthesized and evaluated as potential therapies for CRPC. Compounds were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction, purified using columnchromatography or recrystallization and characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and LC-MS. The compounds' in-vitro cytotoxicity was evaluated against three prostate cancer cell lines (PC3, DU145, and LNCaP). Among the tested compounds, OH14, OH19 and OH22 showed potent antiproliferative activities at low micromolar levels with IC50 values ranging between 4.4 and 10 µM against PC3 and DU145 cell lines. Detailed biological studies of the lead molecule OH19 revealed that it significantly induces apoptosis through upregulation of Bax and downregulation of BCL-2. In addition, OH19 potently inhibits colony formation and reduces cell migration of androgen-independent PCa cell lines (PC3 and DU145). The molecular pathway analysis show that the anticancer activity of OH19 is associated with attenuation in the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK. Furthermore, OH19 inhibits blood vessel formation in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model as compared to control. These results indicate that OH19 could serve as a potential promising lead molecule for the treatment of CRPC and thus, further in-vitro and invivo studies are warranted.
