Abstract:
Although Modern French was originally taken to lack the “restructuring” phenomenon altogether, four different “restructuring” effects have more recently been claimed to exist in the language:en andy climbing, quantifier climbing, adverb climbing, and long movement in ‘easy-to-please’ constructions. Evidence discussed in this article shows that only en andy climbing and long movement in ‘easy-to-please’ constructions are bona fide instances of “restructuring” in French.

Abstract:
AbstractA long line of writers on Evans – Andy Hamilton, Lucy O'Brien, José Bermúdez, and Jason Stanley, to name just a few – assess Evans' account of first-person thought without heeding his warnings that his theory comprises an information and an action component. By omitting the action component, these critics are able to characterize Evans' theory as a perceptual model theory and reject it on that ground. This paper is an attempt to restore the forgotten element. With this component put back in, the charge of Evans' theory as a perceptual model of such thoughts falls apart, and the theory turns out to have enough merit to project itself as a legitimate contender for a plausible account of ‘I’-thought.

Abstract:
This article posits that Andy Clark’s model of distributed cognition manifests socially through the agonism of human activity, and that rhetorical theory offers an understanding of human conflicts as productive and necessary elements of collective response to situation rather than as problems to be solved or noise to be eliminated. To support this assertion, the paper aligns Clark’s argument that cognition responds to situated environmental conditions with the classical concept of kairos, it associates Clark’s assertion that language structures behavior (Being There 195) with the long-held rhetorical stance that language is constitutive, and it examines the online encyclopedia Wikipedia as an enactment of what Clark and rhetorical theorists claim about productive agonism and the litigious nature of identity and cognition.

Chris Holmlund and Andrew Nestingen have long been involved with the Journal of Scandinavian Cinema (JSCA) – Chris since 2013, Andy since the journal’s inception in 2010. This article reviews trends in the journal’s first decade and identifies areas where more scholarship would be welcome. JSCA has built a reputation for excellence and is the authoritative publication on cinema and media of the Nordic region. Special Issues, articles on the representation of sexuality and discussions of national cinema constitute valuable contributions. There have been many excellent articles on male auteurs, and several articles on popular cinema. Women auteurs remain underrepresented; more research on television and media and additional studies of race and ethnicity in all media are needed. The authors encourage JSCA and its contributors to continue to build alliances with film studies organizations in Europe, North America, South America and Asia.

Abstract:
A.E. Stallings has long shown an interest in the poetry of Lord Byron. When invited to contribute to A Modern Don Juan (edited by Andy Croft and N.S. Thompson, 2014) she accepted with alacrity; the experiment in writing ottava rima proved extremely fruitful, not only providing her with a new metrical technique but also expanding her sense of what it was possible to treat in verse. This article examines the canto she contributed to Croft and Thompson’s 2014 volume and also another narrative poem in ottava rima, ‘Lost and Found’, written around the same time. As Stallings has herself observed, her engagement with Byron and Don Juan prepared her for new ways to write about contemporary events. This article examines this development, showing the impact of Byron’s epic on her shorter poems and lyrics as well as on her longer narrative works.

Abstract:
Cody’s Books, in Berkeley, California, had its roots during the mid-1950s in the left-wing sympathies of its founders, the husband–wife team of Fred and Patricia Cody. Serving the University of California nearby, the much admired bookstore became a hangout and haven for intellectually curious students and faculty. In the social protest movements of the 1960s, the store functioned as a refuge from street violence as students and police clashed outside. When long-term employee Andy Ross bought the shop upon the Codys’ retirement, it was a thriving business but soon ran into challenges from encroaching chain stores and the emergence of online shopping. Ross responded variously: sometimes with ambitious, effective bookselling tactics, sometimes with ineffective resentment towards consumers who had abandoned the store. Attempts to survive through risky refinancing and the infusion of foreign investment money to support expansion into San Francisco all backfired. The last Cody’s branch closed ignominiously in 2008.

Abstract:
In the spring of 2018, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) realized artistic director Bill Rauch’s decades-long dream: to produce a queer, interracial Oklahoma!. The production participates in a new practice of recasting history through musical theatre, and does so through an innovative approach to representation and character. OSF’s production reimagined Curly as a queer Black woman; the matriarch of the town, Aunt Eller, as a trans woman; and the secondary romantic couple, Will Parker and Ado Annie (here Ado Andy), as an interracial, gay male partnership. This alteration of the characters’ identities takes a bold new step in the trajectory of theatrical casting practices, challenging the entrenched white supremacy and patriarchy of the theatre industry. In this article, I situate OSF’s method of casting Oklahoma!, which I call ‘recuperative casting’, in the landscape of broader discourse related to casting and musicals that represent US history; I argue that this casting strategy seeks to remedy the whitewashing typical of productions of canonical musicals.

Abstract:
ObjectivesWe compared effects of shorter moderate-intensity exercise time (<10 min bouts) on cardiometabolic parameters with the current recommendations among elderly adults.MethodsFifty-three sedentary individuals aged ≥50 years were divided into exercise groups1: male and2 female short-duration bouts (MSand FS, respectively), and3 male and4 female long-duration bouts (MLand FL, respectively). Short-duration bouts consisted three 5–10 min moderate-intensity jogging sessions daily, and long-duration bouts consisted 30–60 min sessions 3–5 days weekly. Cumulative exercise times were equivalent. Physical activity (PA) was measured by log and activity monitors. Fasting venous blood at baseline and 8 weekly intervals was used for blood chemistry.ResultsAfter 24 weeks, MSand FSwith total cholesterol (TC) of >5.2 mmol/L and >5.3 mmol/L decreased from 22.2% to 14.8% and from 30.9% to 11.5%, respectively. For ML, this decreased from 25.9% to 3.7%, while FLhad 0% change. In MSand ML, TC/high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) of >5.0 mmol/L dropped from 22.2% to 7.4% and from 22.2% to 15.4%, respectively. In FSand FL, TC/HDL of >4.5 mmol/L declined from 19.2% to 7.7% and from 19.2% to 3.8%, respectively. MSand MLwith fasting blood glucose of ≥5.5 mmol/L declined from 40.7% to 11.1% and from 33.3% to 3.7%, respectively. Similarly, it declined from 46.2% to 0% and 42.3% to 11.5% for FSand FL, respectively. There were no differences in the changes between regimes throughout the study.ConclusionBouts lasting <10 min per session are as good as those lasting ;≥30 min in improving cardiometabolic profiles of sedentary adults aged ≥50 years.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTGlucose is known to inhibit the transport and metabolism of many sugars inEscherichia coli. This mechanism leads to its preferential consumption. Far less is known about the preferential utilization of nonglucose sugars inE. coli. Two exceptions arel-arabinose andd-xylose. Previous studies have shown thatl-arabinose inhibitsd-xylose metabolism inEscherichia coli. This repression results froml-arabinose-bound AraC binding to the promoter of thed-xylose metabolic genes and inhibiting their expression. This mechanism, however, has not been explored in single cells. Both thel-arabinose andd-xylose utilization systems are known to exhibit a bimodal induction response to their cognate sugar, where mixed populations of cells either expressing the metabolic genes or not are observed at intermediate sugar concentrations. This suggests thatl-arabinose can only inhibitd-xylose metabolism inl-arabinose-induced cells. To understand how cross talk between these systems affects their response, we investigatedE. coliduring growth on mixtures ofl-arabinose andd-xylose at single-cell resolution. Our results showed that mixed, multimodal populations ofl-arabinose- andd-xylose-induced cells occurred at intermediate sugar concentrations. We also found thatd-xylose inhibited the expression of thel-arabinose metabolic genes and that this repression was due to XylR. These results demonstrate that a strict hierarchy does not exist betweenl-arabinose andd-xylose as previously thought. The results may also aid in the design ofE. colistrains capable of simultaneous sugar consumption.IMPORTANCEGlucose,d-xylose, andl-arabinose are the most abundant sugars in plant biomass. Developing efficient fermentation processes that convert these sugars into chemicals and fuels will require strains capable of coutilizing these sugars. Glucose has long been known to repress the expression of thel-arabinose andd-xylose metabolic genes inEscherichia coli. Recent studies found thatl-arabinose also represses the expression of thed-xylose metabolic genes. In the present study, we found thatd-xylose also represses the expression of thel-arabinose metabolic genes, leading to mixed populations of cells capable of utilizingl-arabinose andd-xylose. These results further our understanding of mixed-sugar utilization and may aid in strain design.

Abstract:
Monomeric antioxidants are widely used as effective antioxidants to protect polymers against thermal oxidation. Low molecular weight antioxidants are easily lost from polymer through migration, evaporation, and extraction. Physical loss of antioxidants is considered to be major concern in the environmental issues and safety regulation as well as long life time of polymers. The grafting copolymerization of natural rubber ando-aminophenol was carried out by using two-roll mill machine. The prepared natural rubber-graft-o-Aminophenol, NR-graft-o-AP, was analysed by using Infrared and1-NMR Spectroscopy techniques. The thermal stability, mechanical properties, and ultrasonic attenuation coefficient were evaluated for NBR vulcanizates containing the commercial antioxidant, N-phenyl--naphthylamine (PBN), the prepared grafted antioxidant, NR-graft-o-AP, and the control vulcanizate. Results of the thermal stability showed that the prepared NR-graft-o-AP can protect NBR vulcanizate against thermal treatment much better than the commercial antioxidant, PBN, and control mix, respectively. The prepared grafted antioxidant improves the mechanical properties of NBR vulcanizate.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTRadioactive waste with widely varying characteristics is generated from the operation and maintenance of nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, research facilities and medical facilities and the through the use of radioisotopes in industrial applications. The waste needs to be treated and conditioned appropriately to provide wasteforms acceptable for safe storage and disposal. Conditioning of radioactive waste is an important step to prepare waste for long-term storage or disposal and includes the following processes:▪ Immobilization which may or may not also provide volume reduction, includinga) Low temperature processes andb) Thermal processes;▪ Containerization fora) Transport,b) Storage, andc) Disposal;▪ Overpacking of primary containersa) Prior to disposal andb) In a disposal facility as part of disposal process.Conditioning consists of operations that produce a waste package suitable for handling, transportation, storage and/or disposal and may be performed for a variety of reasons including standardization of practices and/or wasteforms, technical requirements for waste stability in relation to a repository design or safety case, technical requirements related to waste transportation, societal preferences, regulatory preferences, etc. This paper gives an overview of recent advances in conditioning of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste. The paper is based on the new IAEA Handbook “Conditioning of Low- and Intermediate-Level Liquid, Solidified and Solid Waste” which is one of eight IAEA handbooks intended to provide guidance for evaluating and implementing various characterisation and radioactive waste processing and storage technologies before final disposal

ABSTRACTLow-pressure mercury UV (LP-UV) lamps have long been used for bacterial inactivation, but due to certain disadvantages, such as the possibility of mercury leakage, deep-UV-C light-emitting diodes (DUV-LEDs) for disinfection have recently been of great interest as an alternative. Therefore, in this study, we examined the basic spectral properties of DUV-LEDs and the effects of UV-C irradiation for inactivating foodborne pathogens, includingEscherichia coliO157:H7,Salmonella entericaserovar Typhimurium, andListeria monocytogenes, on solid media, as well as in water. As the temperature increased, DUV-LED light intensity decreased slightly, whereas LP-UV lamps showed increasing intensity until they reached a peak at around 30°C. As the irradiation dosage and temperature increased,E. coliO157:H7 andS. Typhimurium experienced 5- to 6-log-unit reductions.L. monocytogeneswas reduced by over 5 log units at a dose of 1.67 mJ/cm2. At 90% relative humidity (RH), onlyE. coliO157:H7 experienced inactivation significantly greater than at 30 and 60% RH. In a water treatment study involving a continuous system, 6.38-, 5.81-, and 3.47-log-unit reductions were achieved inE. coliO157:H7,S. Typhimurium, andL. monocytogenes, respectively, at 0.5 liter per minute (LPM) and 200 mW output power. The results of this study suggest that the use of DUV-LEDs may compensate for the drawbacks of using LP-UV lamps to inactivate foodborne pathogens.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveThe high expression of somatostatin receptor subtype 2 (SSTR2 also known as sst2) usually present in growth hormone (GH)-secreting adenomas is the rationale for therapy with somatostatin analogs (SSAs) in acromegaly. Although SSTR2 expression is a good predictor for biochemical response to SSA treatment, we still face tumors resistant to SSAs despite high SSTR2 expression. Recently, beta-arrestins (β-arrestins) have been highlighted as key players in the regulation of SSTR2 function.DesignTo investigate whether β-arrestins might be useful predictors of responsiveness to long-term SSA treatment in acromegaly, we retrospectively evaluated 35 patients with acromegaly who underwent adenomectomy in two referral centers in The Netherlands.Methodsβ-arrestin mRNA levels were evaluated in adenoma samples, together with SSTR2 (and SSTR5) mRNA and protein expression. Biochemical response to long-term SSA treatment (median 12 months) was assessed in 32 patients.Resultsβ-arrestin 1 and 2 mRNA was significantly lower in adenoma tissues from patients who achieved insulin-like growth factor 1 normalization (P= 0.024 andP= 0.047) and complete biochemical control (P= 0.047 andP= 0.039). The SSTR2 mRNA was higher in SSA responder patients compared with the resistant ones (P= 0.026). This difference was more evident when analyzing the SSTR2/β-arrestin 1 and SSTR2/β-arrestin 2 ratio (P= 0.011 andP= 0.010). β-arrestin 1 and 2 expression showed a significant trend of higher median values from full responders, partial responders to resistant patients (P= 0.045 andP= 0.021, respectively). Interestingly, SSTR2 protein expression showed a strong inverse correlation with both β-arrestin 1 and 2 mRNA (ρ= –0.69,P= 0.0011 andρ= –0.67,P= 0.0016).ConclusionsLow β-arrestin expression and high SSTR2/β-arrestin ratio correlate with the responsiveness to long-term treatment with SSAs in patients with acromegaly.

Objective. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in tumor tissues and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) aggressiveness and survival.Methods. We correlated the lncRNAs in tumor tissues with HCC survival and clinicopathological features based on Gene Expression Omnibus expression profile GSE36376.Results. Eight lncRNAs and 240 HCC patients were included. Cox regression analysis indicated that HULC was a positive factor for HCC overall survival (HR = 0.885, 95% CI = 0.797–0.983, andP=0.023) and disease-free survival time (HR = 0.913, 95% CI = 0.835–0.998, andP=0.045). H19 and UCA1 were both demonstrated to be risk factors of HCC disease-free survival in multivariate Cox model (HR = 1.071, 95% CI = 1.01–1.137, andP=0.022and HR = 2.4, 95% CI = 1.092–5.273, andP=0.029, resp.). But Kaplan-Meier method showed no significant association between UCA1 and HCC disease-free survival (log rankP=0.616). Logistic regression demonstrated that H19 was overexpressed in HBV-infected patients (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.008–1.29, andP=0.037). HULC had a significant association with vascular invasion (OR = 0.648, 95% CI = 0.523–0.803, andP<0.001). H19 and MEG3 were both considered to be risk factors for high AFP level (OR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.277–1.646, andP<0.001and OR = 1.613, 95% CI = 1.1–2.365, andP=0.014, resp.).Conclusions. Contributing to decreased susceptibility to vascular invasion, upregulation of HULC in tumor tissues was positively associated with HCC survival. In contrast, H19 overexpression might be risk factor for HCC aggressiveness and poor outcomes.

Abstract:
Ageing populations in industrialised countries and a growing proportion of working age individuals is placing a burden on care workers. It is important that countries adapt in order to increase the quantity and quality of care and better integrate the aged into society, including fostering cross-generational interactions. Japan is one of the countries leading the way in this area and Associate Professor Toshihiko Ando, Department of General Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Sendai College, Japan, is a researcher who is developing novel tools for enhancing elderly care. With a background in computing and electrical engineering and these fields' interactions with humans, Ando is looking at how robotics can be applied to elderly care. The goal is to support long-term care in order to enable elderly people to remain active and the burden on caregivers is reduced. Ando is also using his work as a mechanism for involving non-care specialists, including students, in the field of long-term care. This includes the use of teaching materials and visits to care facilities. Ando and his students have developed basic robots that can help with general tasks and they are interested in examining how elderly care patients respond to the presence of robots.

Abstract:
The long-chain PUFA (LCPUFA) content of an infant's diet might affect early weight gain. In early trials on supplementation of formula feedingn-3 LCPUFA affected weight gain adversely.n-6 LCPUFA are thought to promote adipose tissue development and might be associated with higher weight gain. We studied the association between the naturaln-3 andn-6 LCPUFA content of breast milk of Dutch women and weight and BMI gain of their breast-fed infants in the first year of life. The children in this study were enrolled in the Prevention and Incidence of Asthma and Mite Allergy (PIAMA) birth cohort study and were born in 1996–1997 in the Netherlands. Parents reported their child's weight and length in a questionnaire. Of a subgroup of the total population breast-milk samples were collected (n244). The fatty acid composition of breast milk was determined by GLC and expressed as weight percentages. Linear regression was used for data analysis. Mean gain in weight, length and BMI per week from birth to 1 year of age was 119·5 (sd16·1) g, 0·48 (sd0·05) cm and 0·06 (sd0·03) kg/m2, respectively. The associations betweenn-6 andn-3 LCPUFA in breast milk, and infant weight, length and BMI gain were weak and inconsistent. Then-3 andn-6 LCPUFA content in breast milk did not affect weight or BMI gain in the first year of life in breast-fed term infants.

Abstract:
Every woman has a chance to work in any kind of job with any responsibilities, such as workingout of their domicile. For working wives, the differences between a husband’s and a wife’s rolesin the family make the working wive face a lot of conflicts due to their dual role as a worker anda homemaker. It also give effort of every women to make their life steady, even if they have multirole in their families. This can affect marriage satisfaction that it needs a good conflictmanagement to resolve the work-family conflict. This research aims to see the overview of workfamily conflict for wives who are working out of their domicile. This research is using qualitativemethod with semi-structure interview. Participants are wives who are working out of theirdomicile, as a vocal instructure (35), flight attendant (27), and geologist (44), having children anda working husband. Results show that all three participants have had different types of conflict ina various context and experience. Participants experienced job spouse conflict, job parent conflict, and job homemaker conflict. Future research should put focus on related variable with work familyconflict, such as age of marriage, conflict management, and so on.

AbstractAntimicrobial agents are among the most frequently prescribed medications in long-term–care facilities (LTCFs). Therefore, it is not surprising thatClostridium difficilecolonization andC. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) occur commonly in elderly LTCF residents.C. difficilehas been identified as the most common cause of non-epidemic acute diarrheal illness in nursing homes, and outbreaks of CDAD in LTCFs have also been recognized. This position paper reviews the epidemiology and clinical features of CDAD in elderly residents of LTCFs and, using available evidence, provides recommendations for the management ofC. difficilein this setting.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop and test a measure of physical activity for residents in long-term-care facilities, the Physical Activity Survey in Long-Term Care (PAS-LTC). Sixty-six activities are included in the PAS-LTC: routine physical activity, personal-care activities, structured exercise, recreational activities, caretaking activities, and repetitive activities. The study included 13 residents in a long-term-care facility, most of whom were women (62%), with an average age of 84 years (± 6.0) and an average Mini Mental State Examination score of 6 (± 6.9). There was evidence of interrater reliability of the PAS-LTC with intraclass correlations of .83-.94. There was some evidence of validity of the measure with statistically significant correlations between PAS-LTC recorded during the evening and night shifts and the number of counts of activity per the ActiGraph (r= .60 andr= .57, respectively,p< .05) and the calories estimated (r= .58 andr= .60, respectively,p< .05). The PAS-LTC completed during the day shift and total activity based on the PAS-LTC showed nonsignificant correlations of .40 or greater with the ActiGraph activity counts and calories.

AbstractObjectiveWe investigated whether life-long adherence to a vegetarian diet is associated with adult height, age at menarche, adult body weight and body mass index (BMI), used as indicators of growth, development and obesity, in a large sample of adults.DesignThis was a cross-sectional study. Anthropometric data and information on age, ethnicity, education, age at menarche and age at becoming a vegetarian were obtained through a questionnaire. Self-reported height and weight were calibrated using predictive equations derived from a previous validation study.SettingUnited Kingdom.SubjectsThe study includes 45 962 British men and women aged ≥ 20 years of whom 16 083 were vegetarians (not eating fish or meat).ResultsIn men and women, there were no significant differences in height, weight or BMI between life-long vegetarians (n= 125 (men) andn= 265 (women)) and people who became vegetarian at age ≥ 20 years (n= 3122 (men) andn= 8137 (women)). Nor was there a significant difference in age at menarche between life-long vegetarian women and women who became vegetarian at age ≥ 20 years.ConclusionThis study suggests that, compared with people who become vegetarian when adult, life-long vegetarians do not differ in adult height, weight, BMI or age at menarche in women.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective:Objective: To estimate the role of human milkn-6 andn-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in term infant growth in two African urban populations.Design:Observational study. Weight gains at 5 months of age and dietary habits were compared between Congolese infants (n=102) and Burkinabè infants (n=101). Socio-economic status and anthropometry of the mothers were also recorded.Setting:One suburban district in Brazzaville (capital of The Congo) and one in Ouagadougou (capital of Burkina Faso).Subjects:Two random samples of nursing mothers and their 5-month-old infants. Results:All infants were born at term and there was no difference in birth weights. At 5 months of age, infants in Ouagadougou were thinner but not shorter than their counterparts in Brazzaville (average weight gain (standard deviation): 614 (168) g month-1vs. 720 (176) g month-1;P>0.0001). Drastic differences were found in infant diets with regard to extra fluid intake andn-6 andn-3 PUFA concentrations in breast milk. In Ouagadougou, all infants were given fluids other than milk from birth. Breast milk had highly unbalanced 18:2n-6/18:3n-3 andn-6/n-3 long-chain PUFA ratios (53:1 and 5:1, respectively). In Brazzaville, half of the infants received fluids other than milk, and breast milk showed balanced 18:2n-6/18:3n-3 andn-6/n-3 long-chain PUFA ratios (12:1 and 1:1, respectively). A non-linear relationship between 18:2n-6/18:3n-3 ratio and growth was established in Brazzaville (P=0.0027). The 18:2n-6/18:3n-3 ratio adjusted with covariates had an even more significant effect on weight gain (P=0.0011). Applying the same model in Ouagadougou did not show such a relation. Conclusion:Data strongly suggest that a balanced ratio of 18:2n-6/18:3n-3 (between 5:1 and 15:1) in breast milk leads to higher weight gain of infants during the first 5 months of life.

Abstract:
Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) are ubiquitous, bioaccumulative compounds with potential endocrine-disrupting effects. They cross the placental barrier thereby resulting inin uteroexposure of the developing fetus. The objective of this study was to investigate whether maternal serum concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) andp,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p′-DDE) during pregnancy are associated with son's semen quality and reproductive hormone levels. During 2008–2009, we recruited 176 male offspring from a Danish cohort of pregnant women who participated in a study in 1988–1989. Each provided semen and blood samples that were analyzed for sperm concentration, total sperm count, motility, and morphology, and reproductive hormone levels, respectively. The maternal blood samples were collected in pregnancy week 30 and were analyzed for the concentrations of six PCBs (PCB-118, -138, -153, -156, -170, and -180) andp,p′-DDE. The potential associations betweenin uteroexposure to ΣPCBs (pmol/ml), Σdioxin like-(DL) PCBs (PCB-118 and -156) (pmol/ml), andp,p′-DDE and semen quality and reproductive hormone levels were investigated using multiple regression. Maternal median (range) exposure levels of ΣPCB, ΣDL-PCB, andp,p′-DDE were 10.0 (2.1–35.0) pmol/ml, 0.8 (0.2–2.7) pmol/ml, and 8.0 (0.7–55.3) pmol/ml, respectively, reflecting typical background exposure levels in the late 1980s in Denmark. Results suggested thatin uteroexposure to ΣPCB, ΣDL-PCB, andp,p′-DDE was not statistically significantly associated with semen quality measures or reproductive hormone levels. Thus, results based on maternal PCB andp,p′-DDE concentrations alone are not indicative of long-term consequences for male reproductive health; however, we cannot exclude that these POPs in concert with other endocrine-modulating compounds may have adverse effects.

Abstract:
The phylogenetic relationship, biogeography, and evolutionary history of closely related two firefly species,Curtos costipennisandC. okinawanus, distributed in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan were examined based on nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial (2.2 kb long) and nuclear (1.1-1.2 kb long) DNAs. In these analyses, individuals were divided among three genetically distinct local groups,C. costipennisin the Amami region,C. okinawanusin the Okinawa region, andC. costipennisin the Sakishima region. Their mtDNA sequences suggested that ancestralC. costipennispopulation was first separated between the Central and Southern Ryukyu areas, and the northern half was then subdivided betweenC. costipennisin the Amami andC. okinawanusin the Okinawa. The application of the molecular evolutionary clocks of coleopteran insects indicated that their vicariance occurred 1.0–1.4 million years ago, suggesting the influence of submergence and subdivision of a paleopeninsula extending between the Ryukyu Islands and continental China through Taiwan in the early Pleistocene.

Abstract:
BackgroundThe corallum is crucial in building coral reefs and in diagnosing systematic relationships in the order Scleractinia. However, molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed a paraphyly in a majority of traditional families and genera among Scleractinia showing that other biological attributes of the coral, such as polyp morphology and reproductive traits, are underutilized. Among scleractinian genera, theEuphyllia, with nine nominal species in the Indo-Pacific region, is one of the groups that await phylogenetic resolution. Multiple genetic markers were used to construct the phylogeny of sixEuphylliaspecies, namelyE. ancora, E. divisa, E. glabrescens, E. paraancora, E. paradivisa, andE. yaeyamaensis. The phylogeny guided the inferences on the contributions of the colony structure, polyp morphology, and life history traits to the systematics of the largest genus in Euphyllidae (clade V) and, by extension, to the rest of clade V.ResultsAnalyses of cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1), cytochrome b (cytb), and β-tubulin genes of 36 colonies representingEuphylliaand a confamilial species,Galaxea fascicularis, reveal two distinct groups in theEuphylliathat originated from different ancestors.Euphyllia glabrescensformed a separate group.Euphyllia ancora, E. divisa, E. paraancora, E. paradivisa, andE. yaeyamaensisclustered together and diverged from the same ancestor asG. fascicularis. The 3′-end of thecox1gene ofEuphylliawas able to distinguish morphospecies.DiscussionSpecies ofEuphylliawere traditionally classified into two subgenera,EuphylliaandFimbriaphyllia, which represented a dichotomy on colony structure. The paraphyletic groups retained the original members of the subgenera providing a strong basis for recognizingFimbriaphylliaas a genus. However, colony structure was found to be a convergent trait betweenEuphylliaandFimbriaphyllia, while polyp shape and length, sexuality, and reproductive mode defined the dichotomy better. Species in a genus are distinguished by combining polyp morphology and colony form. The cluster ofE. glabrescensof theEuphylliagroup is a hermaphroditic brooder with long, tubular tentacles with knob-like tips, and a phaceloid colony structure. TheFimbriaphylliagroup, withF. paraancora, F. paradivisa, F. ancora, F. divisa, andF. yaeyamaensis, are gonochoric broadcast spawners with short polyps, mixed types of tentacle shapes, and a phaceloid or flabello-meandroid skeleton. Soft-tissue morphology ofG. fascicularisandCtenella chagiuswere found to be consistent with the dichotomy.ConclusionsThe paraphyly of the original members of the previous subgenera justify recognizingFimbriaphylliaas a genus. The integrated approach demonstrates that combining polyp features, reproductive traits, and skeletal morphology is of high systematic value not just toEuphylliaandFimbriaphylliabut also to clade V; thus, laying the groundwork for resolving the phylogeny of clade V.

Abstract:
We tested the hypothesis that unanesthetized rats exhibit ventilatory long-term facilitation (LTF) after intermittent, but not continuous, hypoxia. Minute ventilation (V˙e) and carbon dioxide production (V˙co 2) were measured in unanesthetized, unrestrained male Sprague-Dawley rats via barometric plethysmography before, during, and after exposure to continuous or intermittent hypoxia. Hypoxia was either isocapnic [inspired O2 fraction (Fi O2 ) = 0.08–0.09 and inspired CO2 fraction (Fi CO2 ) = 0.04] or poikilocapnic (Fi O2 = 0.11 and Fi CO2 = 0.00). Sixty minutes after intermittent hypoxia, V˙e orV˙e/V˙co 2 was significantly greater than baseline in both isocapnic and poikilocapnic conditions. In contrast, 60 min after continuous hypoxia,V˙e andV˙e/V˙co 2 were not significantly different from baseline values. These data demonstrate ventilatory LTF after intermittent hypoxia in unanesthetized rats. Ventilatory LTF appeared similar in its magnitude (after accounting for CO2 feedback), time course, and dependence on intermittent hypoxia to phrenic LTF previously observed in anesthetized, vagotomized, paralyzed rats.

The present study was conducted to investigate the antinociceptive action of relationship between Herba Epimedium (HE) and5-HT1Areceptor, between Herba Epimedium (HE) and5-HT2Areceptor. We used the hot-plate method and the writhing assay in mice by the intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection and observed the analgesic effect of HE. Furthermore, through the i.c.v. injection,5-HT1Areceptor partial agonist Buspirone, antagonist Propranolol, the adrenalineβ1-receptor selective blocking agent Metoprolol, and5-HT2Areceptor agonist hydrochloride DOI and antagonist Ketanserin were used, and, 5 min later, HE was used to investigate the impacts of drugs on the analgesic effect in the same way. Results showed that HE had fast and significant antinociception in nervous system, and the effects can persist for a long time. Buspirone and Hydrochloride DOI can remarkably increase the antinociception of HE in nervous system. Ketanserin leads to a significant decrease in its antinociception in nervous system; Metoprolol also has antinociceptive action in nervous system, but it can inhibit the antinociceptive effect of Herba Epimediumin peripheral region. These results suggest that HE has significant antinociception effect and its mechanism is related with5-HT1Areceptor,5-HT2Areceptor, and adrenalineβ1-receptor.

Abstract:
Abstract Background In January 2018, a patient admitted to a Delaware hospital tested positive for New World hantavirus by IgM and IgG ELISA. Subsequent testing by CDC’s Viral Special Pathogens Branch (VSPB) confirmed Andes virus (ANDV) by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and sequencing. ANDV is transmitted to humans through contact with long-tailed rice rats endemic to Argentina and Chile. Unlike other hantavirus species, ANDV can be transmitted person to person, but transmission is typically limited to close contacts of ill persons. Because of this risk, a contact tracing investigation was initiated by CDC, state and county health departments. Method A suspect case was defined as a person with close contact with the traveler who became ill within the maximum incubation period (42 days) following last contact. A high-risk contact was defined as a person with exposure to the traveler’s body fluids. A low-risk contact was defined as a person who had provided care or in-flight service to, or was seated near the traveler for at least 1 hour, in the absence of exposure to body fluids. All contacts were advised to self-monitor their temperature daily for 42 days from last contact, and to seek medical care for any of the specified symptoms. Contacts that developed symptoms were tested for ANDV by RT-PCR and serology by VSPB. Result Fifty-three contacts were identified in six states; 51 were successfully reached. Of these, 28 were healthcare workers, 15 were airline contacts, seven were acquaintances of the traveler, and one was a hospital roommate. Two high-risk contacts were identified, both of whom remained asymptomatic. Six low-risk contacts reported influenza-like illness, diarrhea, or mild rhinitis during the incubation period. All six symptomatic low-risk contacts tested negative for ANDV by PCR, IgM, and IgG. The remaining low-risk contacts remained asymptomatic. Conclusion Hospitalized patients with ANDV should be managed with standard, contact, and droplet precautions. While the risk of human-to-human transmission is low, contact tracing should be considered to identify potential cases and limit additional exposures. Health providers should consider ANDV in returning travelers with a nonspecific febrile or acute respiratory illness who have traveled to the Andes region of Argentina or Chile in the preceding 6 weeks. Abstract:
Map-based navigation is the common navigation method used among the mobile robotic application. The localization plays an important role in the navigation where it estimates the robot position in an environment. Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) is found as the widely used estimation algorithm due to it non-linear characteristic. There are classifications of MCL such as Adaptive MCL (AMCL), Normal Distribution Transform MCL (NDT-MCL) which can perform better than the MCL. However, AMCL is adaptive to particles but the position estimation accuracy is not optimized. NDT-MCL has good position estimation but it requires higher number of particles which results in higher computational effort. The objective of the research is to design and develop a localization algorithm which can achieve better performance in term of position estimation and computational effort. The new MCL algorithm which is named as Adaptive Normal Distribution Transform Monte Carlo Localization (ANDT-MCL) is then designed and developed. It integrates Kullback–Leibler divergence, Normal Distribution Transform and Systematic Resampling into the algorithm. Three experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of proposed ANDT-MCL in simulated environment. These experiments include evaluating the performance of ANDT-MCL with different path shape, distance and velocity. In the end of the research work, the proposed ANDT-MCL is successfully developed. It is adaptive to the number of particles used, higher position estimation and lower computational effort than existing algorithms. The algorithm can produce better position estimation with less computational effort in any kind paths and is consistent in long journey as well as can outperform in high speed navigation.

Abstract:
Fatty acid metabolism is altered in colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed to investigate incorporation of dietaryn-6 andn-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) into plasma phospholipids (PLs), tumour tissue, and normal mucosa in young CRC patients. We also aimed to study differences in PUFA composition between tumour and normal mucosa, and PUFA status associated with cancer stage. Sixty-five CRC patients younger than 55 years were included in a multicenter study. We assessed dietary fatty acid composition by food-frequency questionnaire. Fatty acid composition in plasma PL (n=65) and tumour and normal colonic biopsies (n=32) were analysed by gas chromatography. We observed a significant correlation for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) between dietary intake and concentration in plasma PL (weight%) (r=0.42;P=0.001), but not for anyn-6 PUFA. Tissue concentrations of arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA (weight%) were 1.7–2.5 times higher in tumour than normal mucosa (P≤0.001). Concentrations ofn-3 andn-6 PUFA in plasma PL and tissues were not related to Duke's stage, although patients with more severe cancer stage reported higher intake ofn-3 PUFA. In conclusion, we found accumulation of the long-chainedn-3 andn-6 PUFA in tumour tissue in young CRC patients.

Abstract:
Invasive nontyphoidalSalmonella(NTS) infections constitute a major health problem among infants and toddlers in sub-Saharan Africa; these infections also occur in infants and the elderly in developed countries. We genetically engineered aSalmonella entericaserovar Typhimurium strain of multilocus sequence type 313, the predominant genotype circulating in sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluated the capacities ofS. Typhimurium andSalmonella entericaserovar Enteritidis ΔguaBAΔclpXlive oral vaccines to protect mice against a highly lethal challenge dose of the homologous serovar and determined protection against other group B and D serovars circulating in sub-Saharan Africa. The vaccinesS. Typhimurium CVD 1931 andS. Enteritidis CVD 1944 were immunogenic and protected BALB/c mice against 10,000 50% lethal doses (LD50) ofS. Typhimurium orS. Enteritidis, respectively.S. Typhimurium CVD 1931 protected mice against the group B serovarSalmonella entericaserovar Stanleyville (91% vaccine efficacy), andS. Enteritidis CVD 1944 protected mice against the group D serovarSalmonella entericaserovar Dublin (85% vaccine efficacy). High rates of survival were observed when mice were infected 12 weeks postimmunization, indicating that the vaccines elicited long-lived protective immunity. Whereas CVD 1931 did not protect againstS. Enteritidis R11, CVD 1944 did mediate protection againstS. Typhimurium D65 (81% efficacy). These findings suggest that a bivalent (S. Typhimurium andS. Enteritidis) vaccine would provide broad protection against the majority of invasive NTS infections in sub-Saharan Africa.

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to characterize the genetic context ofblaKPC-2inPseudomonas aeruginosasequence type 244 from Brazil. TheblaKPC-2gene was detected in a new small plasmid, pBH6. Complete sequencing revealed that pBH6 was 3,652 bp long and included the Tn3resolvase and Tn3inverted repeat (IR), a partial copy of ISKpn6, and a putativeoriregion but norepgenes. pBH6 replicated stably intoEscherichia colistrain DH10B andP. aeruginosastrain PAO.

Abstract:
Diet influences the composition of the gut microbiota and host's health, particularly in patients suffering from food-related diseases. Coeliac disease (CD) is a permanent intolerance to cereal gluten proteins and the only therapy for the patients is to adhere to a life-long gluten-free diet (GFD). In the present preliminary study, the effects of a GFD on the composition and immune function of the gut microbiota were analysed in ten healthy subjects (mean age 30·3 years) over 1 month. Faecal microbiota was analysed by fluorescencein situhybridisation (FISH) and quantitative PCR (qPCR). The ability of faecal bacteria to stimulate cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was determined by ELISA. No significant differences in dietary intake were found before and after the GFD except for reductions (P = 0·001) in polysaccharides.Bifidobacterium,Clostridium lituseburenseandFaecalibacterium prausnitziiproportions decreased (P = 0·007,P = 0·031 andP = 0·009, respectively) as a result of the GFD analysed by FISH.Bifidobacterium,LactobacillusandBifidobacterium longumcounts decreased (P = 0·020,P = 0·001 andP = 0·017, respectively), whileEnterobacteriaceaeandEscherichia colicounts increased (P = 0·005 andP = 0·003) after the GFD assessed by qPCR. TNF-α, interferon-γ, IL-10 and IL-8 production by PBMC stimulated with faecal samples was also reduced (P = 0·021,P = 0·037,P = 0·002 andP = 0·007, respectively) after the diet. Therefore, the GFD led to reductions in beneficial gut bacteria populations and the ability of faecal samples to stimulate the host's immunity. Thus, the GFD may constitute an environmental variable to be considered in treated CD patients for its possible effects on gut health.
