Abstract:
13510 Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) patients frequently present with anemia. Anemia may also develop or be exacerbated in CRC patients as a consequence of treatment with radiation therapy (RT) with or without (±) chemotherapy (CT). A better understanding of the relationship between anemia and RT ± CT is important as several studies have found that hemoglobin (Hb) levels are predictive of RT outcomes and that low Hb levels can diminish patient quality of life (QOL). However, the prevalence and evolution of anemia before and during RT ± CT are poorly characterized in CRC patients. Methods:

Background. Blood transfusions (BT) remain one of the most common medical procedures: about 110,000 doses of whole blood are collected annually and almost as many are transfused. Approximately every 10th patient who undergoes invasive procedures in the hospital needs BT. However, 40-60 % of BT in patients without bleeding are inappropriate. Objective. To describe modern views on the BT. Materials and methods. Analysis of the literature on this issue. Results and discussion. 8565 Background: Cancer-associated anemia occurs frequently in patients receiving ANT. Patients not receiving ANT may also have low hemoglobin (Hb) levels that may compromise optimal disease management and patient outcomes. Methods: Patients enrolled in ECAS (Ludwig et al, Eur J Cancer 2004;40:2293–2306) and not receiving ANT (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or hormonal treatment) at enrollment were evaluated for prevalence of anemia (Hb <12.0 g/dL), effect of anemia on performance according to WHO score (0 to 4), and anemia treatment. Disease status at enrollment was catagorized as newly diagn
