Abstract:
Svend Larsen: Kindred souls. Svend Dahl and Wilhelm Munthe on the professionalisation of academic librarianship Svend Dahl (1887–1963) and Wilhelm Munthe (1883–1965) were prominent figures in Scandinavian and international librarianship in the first part of the 20th Century. From 1922–1953, Munthe was head of Oslo University Library which was also Norwegian national library. Internationally, he is known as the author of American Librarianship from a European angle. An attempt at an examination of policies and activities (1939) and as president of the international library federation IFLA (1947–1951). Svend Dahl was head of Copenhagen University Library 1925–1943 and head of the Royal Library and national librarian 1943–1952. Internationally, he is known for his many publications such as the History of the Book (Danish, English, French, German, Spanish and Swedish editions). Dahl and Munthe exchanged just under 200 letters between 1916 and 1953. These letters reveal their views concerning academic librarianship and the need and the ways to professionalise it. In the exchange of letters, the two men also discussed other topics, such as education, internationalisation, and the separation of library and university.

Abstract:
In the period of “thaw” (mid 1950s – mid 1960s), there is a sharp qualitative and quantitative growth of Soviet cinema. If in 1951 in the USSR was filmed just nine films which didn’t represent a high artistic value in the creative attitude, already in 1956–57, Soviet cinema shocked the whole world. In 1958 they released 66 new Soviet film, but by 1960 our film industry overcame the milestone of 100 films and continued to steadily increase the production. The growth of the film industry contributed to the cinema spreading and film distribution. In the years of “thaw” in the USSR cinema attendance exceeded 3 billion, compared to 1.5 billion in 1953. The Gross fundraising from screenings at state cinema chains increased to 5.5 million rubles in 1957, and throughout the hole cinema chain – up to 7.5 million rubles. On the 1st January 1958, the chain consisted of 80 thousand cinemas, including more than 50 thousand in rural areas. By this time, they had mastered new technical possibilities of cinema (wide-screen, panoramic, wide angle, circular panorama). They fully mastered color film. However, in the field of cinema there were still a lot of unresolved issues. Revenues from films increased annually in largely through the construction and commissioning of new cinemas, and due to the tightening operation mode of already active cinemas, contrary to their real capabilities. But cinema rigidly centralized administrative-command system which had been formed in the 1930s continued to operate until the perestroika in the Soviet. They sold films to the distributors as a “product” based on the amount of the estimated cost of the film. The Studio was lcompletely disinterested in the outcome of the promotion of the film, its success with the audience. Thus, they did not have a major driver in the fight for the quality of films. Numerous attempts of the Filmmakers ‘ Union, established in 1957, to change the existing system didn’t have the results. The only application of far-reaching ideas of the Union became an Experimental creative Studio.

Abstract:
Abstract. We have reconstructed a new, homogeneous geomagnetic Dst index for 1932-2002, thus extending the original Dst index by 25 years, i.e. by more than one full solar magnetic cycle. The extension was done by using data from the original set of four low-latitude stations for 1941-1956, and by using the nearby CTO station as a predecessor of the HER station for 1932-1940. Despite some open questions related to the composition of the original Dst index, the reconstructed index is quite similar to the original one during the overlapping time interval (1957-2002). However, the reconstructed Dst index corrects for some known errors in the original Dst index, such as the erroneously large daily UT variation in 1971. Also, despite the overall agreement, the reconstructed index deviates from the original index even on the level of annual averages for several years. For instance, all annual averages of the reconstructed index are negative, and for 1962-1966 they are systematically lower (more stormy) than those of the original index. Accordingly, we disagree with the uniquely positive annual average of the original index in 1965, which most likely is erroneous. We also find somewhat higher (less stormy) values than in the original Dst index for the three lowest annual averages in 1960, 1989 and 1991, out of which the lowest annual average is found in 1989 rather than in 1991. The annual averages of the geomagnetic Ap index and the reconstructed Dst index correlate very well over this time interval, except in the beginning of the series in 1932-1940 and in the declining phase of solar cycles 18, 20 and 21, where high speed solar wind streams cause enhanced geomagnetic activity. Using the superposed epoch method we also find that, on average, the storms in the early extended period (1932-1956) are less intense but tend to have a longer recovery phase, suggesting that there are more HILDCAA-type medium activity intervals during the early period than more recently. We also study the annually averaged storm structure over the 71-year time interval and find that the most stormy years occur during the declining phase of solar cycles 17 and 21 and around the solar maxima of cycles 19 and 22.

Abstract:
The Jardines del Pedregal de San Angel, an exclusive Mexico City subdivision designed and built between 1945 and 1953, is widely recognized as one of the most important works of modern architecture in Mexico. A turning point in the career of its architect, Luis Barragán (1902-1988), it has also been said to mark the emergence of a distinctly Mexican modernism. Since the 1970s, Barragán's postwar designs have typically been discussed as Mexican in essence and association, yet study of El Pedregal reveals how this project was also informed by broader trends. For commentators in the early 1950s, much of El Pedregal's success and regionalist aesthetic lay in its sympathetic integration of architecture and landscape, and in this Barragán was clearly informed by the work of Le Corbusier, Richard Neutra, and Frank Lloyd Wright, among others. This paper considers El Pedregal as part of an international discourse, circa 1930 to 1950, on the integration of site and architecture.

Abstract:
In ’Why didn't they ask Evans?’ (Turney, 2017), I draw together previously unpublished sources and new analyses of published material to cast further light on the circumstances that led to the fatal events surrounding the return of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Polar Party on the British Antarctic Expedition (BAE, 1911–1913). Of particular importance are the notes on the meeting between the Royal Geographical Society's President Lord Curzon and the widows Kathleen Scott and Oriana Wilson in April 1913, which explicitly identify Lieutenant Edward ‘Teddy’ Evans as having removed food that exceeded his allocation as a member of the Last Supporting Party (Curzon, 1913), the establishment and almost immediate closure of a ‘Committee of Enquiry’ chaired by Lord Curzon (Beaumont, 1913a, b, c; Cherry-Garrard, 1913a; Darwin, 1913; Goldie, 1913), the recognition of missing food at key depots by the returning Polar Party on the 7, 24 and 27 February 1912 (Scott, 1913a; Wilson, 1912), Evans’ anger at not being selected as a member of the Polar Party and his early departure home (Evans, 1912), the revised timeline of when Evans fell down with scurvy on the Ross Ice Shelf to apparently align with when and where the food was removed (The Advertiser, 3 April 1912, Adelaide: 10) (Cherry-Garrard, 1922; Ellis, 1969; Evans, 1912, 1913a, 1943; Lashly, 1912; Scott, 1913a, 1913b), Evans’ failure to ensure Scott's orders regarding the return of the dog sledging teams had been acted on (Cherry-Garrard, 1922; Gran, 1961; Hattersley-Smith & McGhie, 1984) and the misunderstanding amongst senior Royal Geographical Society members during Evans’ recuperation in the UK that Apsley Cherry-Garrard ‘was to meet the South Pole party, with two teams of dogs, at the foot of the [Beardmore] glacier’ (Markham, 1913). I would like to thank May (2018) for her comment and acknowledge that Edward Wilson's sketchbooks of the expedition's logistics, scientific priorities, sketches and notes on the BAE comprise entries from 1911–1912 and not solely from 1912, which Turney (2017) used to denote the year of the last entry.

Abstract:
The angel was never as present as during the modernist era, that is at a time when thereligious figure, in its expression, its form, and even in its substance, its objects, waschallenged by the intense philosophical reflection and by the scientific and technicaldiscoveries stemming from the Enlightenment era. It is this acknowledgement basedon an omnipresence of angels, in nineteenth and twentieth art and literature alike, which led us to ask a simple question – what is the angel a sign of? What does itsymbolize? What meaning may be given its large presence? We have decided, to understand it, to get back to the sources of the angel in order toshed light onto the foundations of that which, quite obviously, establishes itself asone of the most important myths in the present-day imagination. We have alsodecided to show how the mutation from a biblical figure to a profane myth hadmanaged to happen and what were the mechanisms through which thismetamorphosis had taken place; we have also tried to know what was at stake in thisprocess. This study proposes to examine the representations of angels in art and literaturefrom 1850 to 1950 in order to discover how these traditional figures came to becomemodern myths. How can their contemporary representations testify of a newrelationship with the divine ? We'll try to answer this question by studying two majorsymbolics - the inspiring angel and the guardian angel - and by revealing the processin which the angel becomes a personal myth of the individual and especially of thecreator

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relation between sound and image in the actual artistic works and especially from video art and to try to determine how this linkage provides violence, emotion, fascination but also how it comes within the scope of the contest of the thinking emergence, the meaning shifting, the work reception by the public. These links between visual and sound parts are brought out from videos coming across the discussion thread and a more specifically monographic analysis is drawn from the Ange Leccia's artistic work producted from 1982 to 2013 and Douglas Gordon's one realized from 1990 to 2008. One part of this study is also devoted to the videographic work problematics of the author of this thesis with respect to the theme involved. Lastly, a comparative analysis puts in a position to question the artistic practice of Ange Leccia and Douglas Gordon, of contemporary artists and the work of the author of this text favouring the relation between sound and image which relies on artistic work based on the sampling of archives, of movies and the use of popular songs

Abstract:
The emergency of complex phenomena in our time has forced creators to reconnect knowledge in design, since at the moment, most of them have fragmentary and hyper specialized inertia. Due to this, nowadays, in architecture the interest for hidden or little-known historic figures, related to science and technology, that for years looked for answers of design within the interconnection of different dimensions of reality, especially in conjunction with models of generative systems. This condition or problem on the daily chore allows us to approach to more general topics around the way man comes into contact with ideas and how it materializes them. In this case, the specific interest lies in how this happens in the architecture of the North American Northeast, or more exactly in the North American derivations of European theories, around the middle of the 20th century. That is, the moment in which there was a traffic of figures of science and technology between Europe and North America, which nurtured the architecture. Specifically, this text is interested in the figure of the architect A. G. Tyng, who maintained a strong professional and personal relationship with L. I. Kahn, one of the most notable figures of twentieth-century architecture. In this way, the initial concern was; how did she reconnect knowledge and how she materialized her seminal work between 1951 and 1953? Then, the objective of this thesis is to decipher the set of norms and rules that make up the practical theoretical world of A. G. Tyng, through the exegesis of his seminal work between 1951 and 1953, and his special relationship with L. I. Kahn. The answer to our research question was constructed from a qualitative descriptive-critical view, in which the inductive inferences, the abduction and methodologic empiricism prevailed. The physical description was privileged in this document, thanks to its presence in the present, what allowed it we face the theory and phenomena manifesto, as well as its comprehension and its internal laws’. Couple with the above, it is important to highlight that this thesis approached a different angle than usual, and at the same time, opened a space of historiographical experimentation where the hypotheses of these great stories were tested. The results of the study indicated how the ideal of progress, coupled with science and technology in the mid-20th century United States, fueled a traffic of ideas between the professional and educational worlds. This generated a readjustment in the reductive and totalizing architectural models, dominant at that time, a fact that guided A. G. Tyng in the process of articulating fragmented knowledge in disciplines or fields of knowledge towards interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary reflexive models close to generative systems. Namely, it helped her in her search for tomorrow's structures. In conclusion, this process contributed to the construction of a new critical path for architecture and provided evidence to rearrange the history of L. I. Kahn, one of the great figures of architecture. He also delegated to us the bases of the visionary theories of A. G. Tyng, which represents an invaluable collection for research interested in the affinity to numbers and their similarity with computer-aided design logics or their similarity with design, close to the scientific paradigm or complex thought.

In the current research we investigate aspects related to the art of directing, emphasizing the artistic experience of Anne Bogart in the SITI Company - theater company founded in the United States in 1992. One of the characteristics of Bogart's work developed in SITI Company is about training: a current practice in many different artistic approaches in the theatre history concerning to continuous improvement of the actor's (and the actress's) techniques. Here the training is regarded as a concept which was established throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries under prerogatives conceived by theatre directors. In the SITI Company, the training is a combination of the Suzuki Method and the Viewpoints, two different theatrical techniques that overlap cultural references of East and West. We went under reflections on the procedures adopted by Bogart in the SITI Company, in order to specify a particular understanding of the links between the concept of training and the art of directing. And how it becames a proposition for Bogart relative to a director's role.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the history of Princess Anne County Training School and Union Kempsville High School in Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach, Virginia. The method of inquiry was qualitative, historical research that relied on oral histories to provide a cultural understanding of the school from the perspectives of its students, administrators, teachers, and staff. The school\'s history was reconstructed through direct engagement with individuals whose interviews recounted the establishment, growth, operation, and demise of Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School. In order to minimize the nostalgic influence and bring greater validity to the oral histories, data were also collected from historical accounts, school board and community organization minutes, local periodicals, and school artifacts.
Segregation cultivated legally separate-but-equal schools for Blacks and Whites, with little or no attention given to actual equality. In 1925, the Black community in Princess Anne County, Virginia, mobilized to build a high school for their children who were denied an education beyond seventh grade. Princess Anne County Training School opened for Black students in 1938 and initially utilized a curriculum based on industrial education. It was the first and only Black high school in Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach, Virginia. As Princess Anne County Training School progressed, the Black community eventually repudiated the term, training school. The school\'s name was changed to Union Kempsville High School in the fall of 1961. Gradual desegregation inaugurated by the Brown v. Board of Education decisions led to a decline in student enrollment, and Union Kempsville High School closed in 1969.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this M.A. Thesis is to provide an in-depth comparison of Heidi and Anne of Green Gables by: (1) revealing through a literary and social analysis, the more somber aspects of these novels. (2) examining the multi-dimensionality of the characters found therein and (3) investigating the possible reasons for the mythical and legendary proportions of these tales. In doing so, I hope to clarify the misconception that these novels, as children's books, are based solely on idealistic and light-hearted themes. Further, I would like to answer, in part, why these two orphan tales have remained so universally popular for so long, whereas other similar books have not. But most of all, I hope to prove that children's literature has significant literary merit, worthy of academic interest and investigation.

In 2014 22nd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone22-30260.

Full text
Abstract:
The characteristics of two-phase slug flow in a narrow rectangular channel with cross section of 3.25 mm × 43 mm under vertical and inclined conditions are investigated using a high speed video camera system. It is found that the velocity of Taylor bubble in vertical continuous slug flow could be well predicted by the Nicklin et al. (1962) correlation, in which C0 is given by the correlation of Ishii (1977), and the drift velocity given by the correlation of Sadatomi et al. (1982) or Clanet et al. (2004). For low two-phase superficial velocity (FrTP ≤ 3.5), the Taylor bubble velocities gradually increase with the increasing in inclination angles and almost approximate the maximum value for θ = 30°. For high two-phase superficial velocity (FrTP > 3.5), the influence of the inclination angles on the Taylor bubble velocity is insignificant, and the bubble velocity under vertical condition is slight lower than those under inclined conditions. For the inclined cases, the nose of Taylor bubble is deviated from the centerline and its position is the function of the two-phase superficial velocity as well as the inclination angle.

Abstract:

Golovko, Khrystyna. TRAVEL REPORT BY ALEKSANDER JANTA-POŁCZYNSKI «INTO THE USSR» (1932): FROG PERSPECTIVE. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11091.

Full text
Abstract:
The article analyzes a series of materials by Aleksander Janta-Polczynski «Into the USSR» from Soviet Russia during the in 1932, published on «Wiadomości Literackiе». The purpose of this article is explain the uniqueness of the reporter’s style and personality. We want to emphasize the role of Janta-Polczynski as the pioneer of reportage journalism. He was the first who worked professionally in this position in the full sense of this word. Analyzed the cycle of Alexander Janta-Polczynski from Russia, we can emphasize the scale of the reporter’s trip: in 1932 the journalist made the largest journalistic trip to the USSR. Janta visited the Eastern republics, which differed from the popular Moscow and Leningrad. Also, he saw the largest construction in the USSR at this time – which it bragged about russian newspapers – Magnitogorsk and Dneprostroy. For a better understanding are given the visual examples from reportorial texts. It should be noted that for Janta the main task of the reporter is to show what is seen and recorded: only facts and personal experience in communication. This cycle can safely be called a journey and social expedition. The main task for Janta the scene where the reportage takes place is to find proper characters and convince them of the importance of their story. These are the materials of a reporter – an eyewitness, not a researcher, a report from the scene, which pushes the reader to an independent conclusion. We explore that all the Janta-Polczynski texts are inextricably linked by looking into the «middle» of the process: the diversity of what is seen allows the journalist to look for differences and similarities, compare, look at the fundamental components, track changes and distinguish them. Special attention was paid to a low-angle shot in his materials. He describes how Soviet society lives, how factories work, how the system of educating a Soviet person, goes to the movies and exhibitions, communicates with ordinary citizens. Undoubtedly, all this is successfully complemented by the factual detail and uniqueness of the author’s style.
