L’ange n’a jamais été aussi présent qu’à l’heure de la modernité, c’est-à-dire à l’époque où le religieux, en son expression, sa forme et sa substance, ses objets, se trouvait remis en question par l’intense réflexion philosophique et par les découvertes scientifiques et techniques issues des Lumières. C’est ce constat fondé sur l’omniprésence des anges tant dans l’art que dans la littérature du dix-neuvième et du vingtième siècles qui nous a conduit à nous poser une question simple : de quoi l’ange fait-il signe ? Que symbolise-t-il ? Quel sens donner à cette présence ?Nous avons décidé, pour le savoir, de remonter aux sources de l’ange afin de mettre au jour les fondements de ce qui, de toute évidence, s’affirme comme l’un des mythes les plus importants de notre imaginaire contemporain. Nous avons également décidé de montrer comment ce passage d’une figure biblique à un mythe profane avait été rendu possible et quels mécanismes cette métamorphose avait empruntés ;nous avons aussi cherché à savoir quels enjeux ce processus mettait en jeu.Cette étude se propose d’étudier les représentations des anges dans l’art et la littérature de 1850 à 1950 afin de découvrir comment l’on passe d’une figure traditionnelle à un véritable mythe moderne. En quoi les représentations modernes de l’ange témoignent-elles des nouveaux rapports qui se tissent au divin ? Il s’agit ensuite d’étudier ses deux symboliques majeures : celle de l’ange inspirateur et celle de l’ange gardien, en mettant au jour les procédés qui permettent à l’ange de devenir un mythe personnel de l’individu et du créateur en particulier
The angel was never as present as during the modernist era, that is at a time when thereligious figure, in its expression, its form, and even in its substance, its objects, waschallenged by the intense philosophical reflection and by the scientific and technicaldiscoveries stemming from the Enlightenment era. It is this acknowledgement basedon an omnipresence of angels, in nineteenth and twentieth art and literature alike,which led us to ask a simple question – what is the angel a sign of? What does itsymbolize? What meaning may be given its large presence?We have decided, to understand it, to get back to the sources of the angel in order toshed light onto the foundations of that which, quite obviously, establishes itself asone of the most important myths in the present-day imagination. We have alsodecided to show how the mutation from a biblical figure to a profane myth hadmanaged to happen and what were the mechanisms through which thismetamorphosis had taken place; we have also tried to know what was at stake in thisprocess.This study proposes to examine the representations of angels in art and literaturefrom 1850 to 1950 in order to discover how these traditional figures came to becomemodern myths. How can their contemporary representations testify of a newrelationship with the divine ? We'll try to answer this question by studying two majorsymbolics - the inspiring angel and the guardian angel - and by revealing the processin which the angel becomes a personal myth of the individual and especially of thecreator

Abstract:
Dans cette thèse, il est question d'interroger la relation entre le son et l'image dans les pratiques plastiques actuelles à partir de travaux majoritairement vidéographiques et de tenter de déterminer comment cette articulation est un vecteur de violence, d'émotion, de fascination mais également comment elle s'inscrit dans le contexte de l'émergence de la pensée, du déplacement du sens et de la réception de l'oeuvre par le spectateur. Ces rapports entre le visuel et le sonore sont dégagés au fil des vidéos rencontrées et une analyse à caractère plus spécifiquement monographique est menée à partir des oeuvres d'Ange Leccia produites de 1982 à 2013 et celles de Douglas Gordon réalisées de 1990 à 2008. Une partie de cette étude est également consacrée à faire émerger la problématique du travail vidéographique de l'auteur de cette thèse en lien avec la thématique abordée. En dernier lieu, une analyse comparée met en regard les pratiques d'Ange Leccia, de Douglas Gordon, celles d'artistes contemporains ainsi que celles de l'auteur de ce texte en privilégiant les liaisons du sonore et du visuel dans les travaux plastiques réalisés à partir du réemploi d'images d'archives, de films cinématographiques et l'utilisation de chansons populaires
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relation between sound and image in the actual artistic works and especially from video art and to try to determine how this linkage provides violence, emotion, fascination but also how it comes within the scope of the contest of the thinking emergence, the meaning shifting, the work reception by the public. These links between visual and sound parts are brought out from videos coming across the discussion thread and a more specifically monographic analysis is drawn from the Ange Leccia's artistic work producted from 1982 to 2013 and Douglas Gordon's one realized from 1990 to 2008. One part of this study is also devoted to the videographic work problematics of the author of this thesis with respect to the theme involved. Lastly, a comparative analysis puts in a position to question the artistic practice of Ange Leccia and Douglas Gordon, of contemporary artists and the work of the author of this text favouring the relation between sound and image which relies on artistic work based on the sampling of archives, of movies and the use of popular songs

Abstract:
The emergency of complex phenomena in our time has forced creators to reconnect knowledge in design, since at the moment, most of them have fragmentary and hyper specialized inertia. Due to this, nowadays, in architecture the interest for hidden or little-known historic figures, related to science and technology, that for years looked for answers of design within the interconnection of different dimensions of reality, especially in conjunction with models of generative systems. This condition or problem on the daily chore allows us to approach to more general topics around the way man comes into contact with ideas and how it materializes them. In this case, the specific interest lies in how this happens in the architecture of the North American Northeast, or more exactly in the North American derivations of European theories, around the middle of the 20th century. That is, the moment in which there was a traffic of figures of science and technology between Europe and North America, which nurtured the architecture. Specifically, this text is interested in the figure of the architect A. G. Tyng, who maintained a strong professional and personal relationship with L. I. Kahn, one of the most notable figures of twentieth-century architecture. In this way, the initial concern was; how did she reconnect knowledge and how she materialized her seminal work between 1951 and 1953? Then, the objective of this thesis is to decipher the set of norms and rules that make up the practical theoretical world of A. G. Tyng, through the exegesis of his seminal work between 1951 and 1953, and his special relationship with L. I. Kahn. The answer to our research question was constructed from a qualitative descriptive-critical view, in which the inductive inferences, the abduction and methodologic empiricism prevailed. The physical description was privileged in this document, thanks to its presence in the present, what allowed it we face the theory and phenomena manifesto, as well as its comprehension and its internal laws’. Couple with the above, it is important to highlight that this thesis approached a different angle than usual, and at the same time, opened a space of historiographical experimentation where the hypotheses of these great stories were tested. The results of the study indicated how the ideal of progress, coupled with science and technology in the mid-20th century United States, fueled a traffic of ideas between the professional and educational worlds. This generated a readjustment in the reductive and totalizing architectural models, dominant at that time, a fact that guided A. G. Tyng in the process of articulating fragmented knowledge in disciplines or fields of knowledge towards interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary reflexive models close to generative systems. Namely, it helped her in her search for tomorrow's structures. In conclusion, this process contributed to the construction of a new critical path for architecture and provided evidence to rearrange the history of L. I. Kahn, one of the great figures of architecture. He also delegated to us the bases of the visionary theories of A. G. Tyng, which represents an invaluable collection for research interested in the affinity to numbers and their similarity with computer-aided design logics or their similarity with design, close to the scientific paradigm or complex thought.
La emergencia de los fenómenos complejos en nuestro tiempo ha obligado a los creadores a reconectar conocimientos en el diseño, ya que, actualmente, muchos presentan una inercia fragmentaria e hiperespecializada. En razón a esto, en la arquitectura se ha despertado hoy día el interés por las figuras históricas ocultas o poco conocidas, próximas a la ciencia y a la tecnología, que por años buscaron respuestas de diseño en la interconexión de distintas dimensiones de lo real, especialmente en conexión con modelos de sistemas generativos. Esta condición o problemática en el quehacer investigativo nos permite aproximarnos a temas más generales en torno a la forma en que el hombre entra en contacto con las ideas y cómo las materializa. En este caso, el interés específico radica en cómo sucede esto en la arquitectura del noreste norteamericano, más exactamente en las derivaciones norteamericanas de las teorías europeas, alrededor de la mitad del siglo XX; esto es, el momento en el cual sobrevino un tráfico de figuras de la ciencia y la tecnología entre Europa y Norteamérica, que nutrió la arquitectura. De manera puntual, este documento se interesa en la figura de la arquitecta Tyng quien mantuvo una fuerte relación profesional y personal con Kahn, una de las figuras más notables de la arquitectura del siglo XX. De esta manera, la inquietud inicial fue: ¿Cómo reconectó ella conocimientos y cómo materializó su obra seminal entre 1951 y 1953? Luego, el objetivo de esta tesis es descifrar el conjunto de normas y reglas que conforman el mundo teórico práctico de Tyng ¿a través de la exégesis de su obra seminal entre 1951 y 1953¿ y su especial relación con Kahn. La respuesta a esta pregunta de investigación fue construida a partir de una visión cualitativa descriptiva-critica, en la que primaron las inferencias inductivas, la abducción y el empirismo metodológico. La descripción física fue privilegiada en este documento, gracias a su existencia en el presente, lo que permitió enfrentar la teoría y el fenómeno manifiesto, así como su comprensión y la de sus leyes internas. Aunado a lo anterior, es importante resaltar que esta tesis abordó un enfoque distinto al habitual y a la vez abrió un espacio de experimentación historiográfica en el que las hipótesis de esas grandes historias fueron puestas a prueba. Los resultados del estudio indicaron cómo el ideal de progreso, unido a la ciencia y a la tecnología en los Estados Unidos de mediados del siglo XX, alimentaron un tráfico de ideas entre el mundo profesional y educativo. Este generó un reajuste en los modelos arquitectónicos reductivos y totalizantes, dominantes en ese tiempo, hecho que dirigió a Tyng en el proceso de articular los conocimientos fragmentados en disciplinas o campos de saber hacia modelos reflexivos interdisciplinarios y transdisciplinarios cercanos a los sistemas generativos. A saber, la ayudó en su búsqueda de las estructuras del mañana. En conclusión, este proceso contribuyó en la construcción de un camino crítico nuevo para la arquitectura y aportó pruebas para reacomodar la historia de Kahn, una de las grandes figuras de la arquitectura. Así mismo, nos mostró las bases de las visionarias teorías de Tyng, lo que representa un acervo invaluable para las investigaciones interesadas por la afinidad al número y por su similitud con las lógicas de diseño asistido por ordenador o por su semejanza con el diseño, cercano al paradigma científico o al pensamiento complejo.

Nesta pesquisa investigamos aspectos ligados à arte da direção teatral, enfatizando a experiência artística de Anne Bogart na SITI Company - companhia teatral fundada nos Estados Unidos no ano de 1992. Uma das características do trabalho que Bogart desenvolve na SITI Company tem a ver com o treinamento: prática presente em diferentes manifestações artísticas ao longo da história e que se refere, no caso da arte do teatro, a um contínuo aprimoramento sobre as técnicas de ator/atriz. A abordagem aqui realizada diz respeito ao treinamento enquanto um conceito estabelecido ao longo dos séculos XX e XXI segundo prerrogativas determinadas por diretores/diretoras. Na SITI Company, o treinamento resulta da combinação entre o Método Suzuki e o Viewpoints, duas distintas técnicas teatrais que imbricam referências culturais do Oriente e Ocidente. Desenvolvemos reflexões sobre os procedimentos adotados por Bogart na SITI Company, buscando explicitar um entendimento particular das relações estabelecidas entre o conceito de treinamento e a arte da direção teatral. E de que modo isso edifica, para Bogart, uma proposição relacionada às competências de um diretor/de uma diretora.
In the current research we investigate aspects related to the art of directing, emphasizing the artistic experience of Anne Bogart in the SITI Company - theater company founded in the United States in 1992. One of the characteristics of Bogart's work developed in SITI Company is about training: a current practice in many different artistic approaches in the theatre history concerning to continuous improvement of the actor's (and the actress's) techniques. Here the training is regarded as a concept which was established throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries under prerogatives conceived by theatre directors. In the SITI Company, the training is a combination of the Suzuki Method and the Viewpoints, two different theatrical techniques that overlap cultural references of East and West. We went under reflections on the procedures adopted by Bogart in the SITI Company, in order to specify a particular understanding of the links between the concept of training and the art of directing. And how it becames a proposition for Bogart relative to a director's role.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the history of Princess Anne County Training School and Union Kempsville High School in Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach, Virginia. The method of inquiry was qualitative, historical research that relied on oral histories to provide a cultural understanding of the school from the perspectives of its students, administrators, teachers, and staff. The school\'s history was reconstructed through direct engagement with individuals whose interviews recounted the establishment, growth, operation, and demise of Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School. In order to minimize the nostalgic influence and bring greater validity to the oral histories, data were also collected from historical accounts, school board and community organization minutes, local periodicals, and school artifacts.  
Segregation cultivated legally separate-but-equal schools for Blacks and Whites, with little or no attention given to actual equality. In 1925, the Black community in Princess Anne County, Virginia, mobilized to build a high school for their children who were denied an education beyond seventh grade. Princess Anne County Training School opened for Black students in 1938 and initially utilized a curriculum based on industrial education. It was the first and only Black high school in Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach, Virginia. As Princess Anne County Training School progressed, the Black community eventually repudiated the term, training school. The school\'s name was changed to Union Kempsville High School in the fall of 1961. Gradual desegregation inaugurated by the Brown v. Board of Education decisions led to a decline in student enrollment, and Union Kempsville High School closed in 1969.

The primary objective of this M.A. Thesis is to provide an in-depth comparison of Heidi and Anne of Green Gables by: (1) revealing through a literary and social analysis, the more somber aspects of these novels. (2) examining the multi-dimensionality of the characters found therein and (3) investigating the possible reasons for the mythical and legendary proportions of these tales. In doing so, I hope to clarify the misconception that these novels, as children's books, are based solely on idealistic and light-hearted themes. Further, I would like to answer, in part, why these two orphan tales have remained so universally popular for so long, whereas other similar books have not. But most of all, I hope to prove that children's literature has significant literary merit, worthy of academic interest and investigation.

Esta pesquisa avalia a imprensa brasileira da década anterior ao golpe civil-militar (1955/64) que encerrou a experiência democrática. O objetivo é verificar como o jornalismo de vertente liberal reagiu às transformações políticas e sociais do período, buscando identificar a possível influência deste setor sobre a opinião pública. Tratando especificamente do jornalismo impresso, a análise buscará entender como as empresas jornalísticas atuaram politicamente em favor de interesses econômicos e ideológicos.
This research evaluates the Brazilian press of the previous decade to civil-military coup (1955/64) which closed the democratic experience. The objective is to check how the journalism aspect of liberal reacted to the political and social changes of the period, seeking to identify the possible influence of this sector on public opinion. Addressing specifically the print journalism, analysis searches for understanding how the journalistic companies acted politically in favor of economic and ideological interests.

Ce mémoire étudie l'institution collégiale comme espace de vie au tournant du XXe siècle par le biais d'une étude de cas, le Collège de Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière. Plus concrètement, nous tentons de répondre aux questions suivantes. Comment pense-t-on et aménage-t-on l'espace dans ce collège pour garçons entre 1860-1922? Comment façonne-t-il les identités sociales et que nous révèle-t-il sur celles-ci? Autrement dit, nous nous intéressons aux valeurs qui sont transmises et aux normes sociales qui influencent l'aménagement. Nous cherchons à connaître leur évolution au cours de la période étudiée. Nous soutenons que l'architecture, l'ordonnance spatial, de même que le décor des lieux concourent à inculquer à la jeunesse un système de valeurs qui s'accordent avec l'idéal catholique : le retrait du monde, la piété, le classicisme et le patriotisme sont celles les plus évidemment exhibées au sein du Collège. L'aménagement de l'espace collégial revêt également des fonctions de régulation sociale : il sert à différencier et à hiérarchiser la population collégiale, autant les écoliers, le corps professoral que les employés d'entretien et d'approvisionnement. À un troisième niveau, il apparaît que le Collège de Sainte-Anne se modernise au cours des soixante années examinées. En portant une attention à la sécurité de l'établissement, à l'hygiène corporelle et à l'assainissement des espaces, les nouvelles théories de la pédagogie scolaire à la fin du XIXe siècle, notamment en ce qui concerne les études dites "utilitaires", les sciences, l'exercice physique et les loisirs, affectent et transforment l'institution collégiale de Sainte-Anne. Faire ressortir les effets de l'espace sur la formation identitaire et remettre en cause l'imperméabilité et l'intemporalité de cet espace dit traditionnel constituent donc les premières préoccupations de cette recherche. Le mémoire vise ultimement à mieux comprendre les objectifs d'éducation de l'Église catholique au moment où elle connaît son âge d'or dans la Belle province.

Como sucede con todos aquellos acontecimientos que modifican sustancialmente la fisonomía de un Estado hasta en sus costuras más imperceptibles, la integración de España en la CEE, hoy Unión Europea, se configura para el investigador como un proceso poliédrico y multidimensional. Este tesis examina desde una perspectiva económico-histórica el procedimiento negociador abierto entre España y la Comunidad en la década de los sesenta y que culmina con la firma del Tratado de Adhesión el 12 de junio de 1985 a partir del análisis de la intervención y la influencia que en este proceso ejercieron los empresarios españoles. El objetivo principal del presente trabajo de investigación es el estudio de la estrategia asumida por las organizaciones patronales durante las negociaciones, así como la interpretación de las diferentes actitudes que fue asumiendo el empresariado en los sucesivos estadios de la aproximación de España al proyecto comunitario, especialmente en lo relativo a las implicaciones en materia económica que suponía la entrada de este país en el Mercado Común.
As with all events that substantially change the physiognomy of a State in even its most imperceptible aspects, Spain’s integration in the EEC, now the European Union, is seen by the investigator as a polyhedral and multidimensional process. Based on an economic-historic perspective, this thesis examines the negotiations between Spain and the Community in the 1960s which ended with the Adhesion Treaty being signed on 12 June 1985, with an analysis of the lobbying and influence of the Spanish business community on this process. The study’s primary objective is to examine the strategy of business organisations during the negotiations, together with an interpretation of their different attitudes as Spain came closer to the Community project, with particular focus on the economic implications of the country’s adhesion to the Common Market.

Este trabalho é uma abordagem analítica do monodrama Erwartung Op. 17 – obra do expressionismo musical composta por Schoenberg a partir do texto de Marie Pappenheim – que parte das reflexões estéticas de Theodor Adorno sobre a obra e sobre o expressionismo em geral, principalmente em sua Filosofia da Nova Música. O primeiro capítulo aborda os dois conceitos de expressão que caracterizam, na ótica de Adorno, a música anterior ao expressionismo: a expressão como simulação de paixões e a expressão como organização total da forma. Cada uma delas resultou, não obstante, em um bloqueio da expressão, decorrente da hipóstase quer seja do princípio formal abstrato, quer seja dos momentos particulares isolados do todo. Este bloqueio expressivo é desenvolvido no segundo capítulo, que aborda a dinâmica através da qual, num contexto de comercialização e fetichização da cultura, a música tende a forjar uma aparente reconciliação entre a parte e o todo, entre o universal e o singular. A música expressionista realiza uma crítica dessa aparência de conciliação e dá lugar ao singular não mediatizado pela forma. Toma, como conteúdo, os gestos orgânicos, os conteúdos anímicos não mediatizados pelo conceito e pela forma e estabelece o registro documental de gestos orgânicos como procedimento formal. Em virtude do seu princípio expressivo, Erwartung se assemelha a um sismograma, que registra os abalos sísmicos. This research is an analytical approach of the monodrama Erwartung Op. 17 – work from the musical expressionism composed by Schoenberg from Marie Pappenheim’s text – which starts from Adorno’s aesthetic reflections about the work and the expressionism as a whole, mainly in his Philosophy of New Music. The first chapter approaches the two concepts of expression that characterizes, in Adorno’s view, music before the expressionism: the expression as simulation of affections and the expression as total organization of form. However, each one of these ways of expression resulted in a blockade of expression, due to hypostasis either of abstract formal principle, or of individual moments separated from the whole. This expressive blockade is developed in chapter two, which approaches the dynamics whereby, in contexts of commercialization and fetishization of culture, music trends to forge an apparent reconciliation of the part and the whole, of universal and singular. Expressionist music accomplishes a critic of this appearance of reconciliation and conveys the form nonmediated singularity. It takes, as content, organic gestures, spiritual contents non-mediated through concept and form and establishes documentary record of organic gestures as formal procedure. Due to its expressive principle, Erwartung resembles a seismogram, which records the seismic events. However, as a result of this denial of formal schemas – either thematic-motivic or harmonic – we don’t see a mere refusal of form over content, but a new kind of relation of form and content, which is developed in last chapter, dedicated to musical analysis

It proved appropriate to analyse postmodernist poetry ~AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie ondersoek was om in die inleidende teoretiese gedeelte In oorsig te gee van die belangrikste feministiese teoretici se bevindings. Daar is veral gekonsentreer op In historiese oorsig van die feministiese teoriee en hieruit is probeer om een teoretiese model daar te stel, waarvolgens literere tekste in die besonder gelees kon word. In aansluiting by die post-strukturalistiese teoriee van Jacques Derrida is aan die feministiese leesmodel In dekonstruktivistiese basis gegee. Dit het veral geblyk van pas te wees, by die lees van die postmodernistiese poesie soos in die geval van Joan Hambidge. In die tweede hoofstuk is veral gefokus op die poes1e van Antjie Krog en is die eiesoortige kenmerke van haar poesie eers uitgelig. Daarna is veral gekonsentreer op haar mees onlangse digbundel Lady Anne. Uit die bundel is veral tekste geselekteer wat pertinent fokus op uitbeelding van die man-vrou-verhouding binne die huwelik. Daar word veral gekonsentreer op die drie bel~ngrikste vrouefigure in die bundel, naamlik Lady Anne Barnard, Mev. Van Reenen en die digteres Antjie Krog self. Daar is veral aangetoon wat hulle verhoudings met hulle mans was en die huweliksrelasie is met behulp van In feministiese leesmodel beskou en gedekonstrueer. Dikwels is daar sprake van In seksuele magstryd in die huwelik aan die gang. In die geval van Lady Anne Barnard weerspieel die huweliksverhouding tussen man en vrou die spanning wat inherent aanwesig is, veral omdat Barnard so In swakkeling is en hy onderdanig aan sy vrou staan. Hierdie magsbalans wat versteur word, kern ook voor in die verse oor Antjie Krog en haar man. Die man as verteenwoordiger van die patriargale waardesisteem, sien dit as sy plig om oor die vrou te heers. In die derde hoofstuk word veral gekonsentreer op Joan Hambidge se Lesbiesfeministiese verse en wel uit haar derde digbundel, Die anatomie van melancholie. Die kodes van die Lesbiese verhouding tussen twee vroue is ondermynend van aard en dit gee aanleiding tot kontroversiele bevraagtekening van die heersende ideologie binne die same1ewing. Die heersende seksistiese ins1ag van die patriargie het tot gevolg dat Lesbiese liefde as IIvreemd" bestempel word en gevolglik strydig is met die wese van die ideologiese apparatuur in so 'n staat. Schlegel (1925 Kleinwachau/ Radeberg – 2017 Köln) Eine außergewöhnliche Frau in einer außergewöhnlichen Zeit, die in zahlreichen Romanen, Erzählungen, Gedichten, Dokumentationen, Essays, Hörspielen und Drehbüchern für den Westdeutschen Rundfunk ihre Lebensweisheit, tiefe Menschlichkeit und Beobachtungsgabe preisgab. Nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands trat sie parteiisch für „Beseitigung der Mauern in den Köpfen, Herzen und Leibern“ ein. Als junge Volontärin bei der DNN in Dresden begannen erste schriftstellerische Versuche, sie muss das in Nazi-Deutschland verordnete Pflichtjahr in Österreich ableisten und ist damit zum Kriegsende in der amerikanischen Zone. Über Herford und Kleve führte ihr Weg nach zwei verlassenen Ehen nach Köln, wo sie sich mit ihren vier Kindern als Alleinerziehende durch Gelegenheitsarbeiten am Theater durchschlägt und Filmdrehbücher zu schreiben beginnt. Stipendien führen sie zu Studienaufenthalten in verschiedene Großstädte der Welt. Der ihr eigene Schreibstil macht die Fachwelt aufmerksam, und sie erhält zahlreiche Aufträge und Ehrungen für ihr Lebenswerk. La figure de l'ange est particulièrement présente dans l'œuvre poétique de G. Diego, R. Alberti et F. Garcia Lorca. Ce travail analyse en premier lieu les rapports que ces trois poètes établissent entre la créature céleste et le monde. Influencés par leur éducation religieuse et leur milieu, ils évoquent sa nature, sa vocation et son action sur l'univers. La seconde partie s'intéresse aux liens qui unissent les anges et l'homme. Les trois poètes décrivent des apparitions et construisent des représentations mentales de l'ange. Certains moments de la vie -péché, mort, solitude, rêve, souffrance- sont propices à sa présence et l'associent à la condition humaine : soumis au temps et à la matière, il prend corps et devient symbole de l'amour. Sont étudiées, enfin, les relations existant entre l'ange et la culture. Douée d'intelligence, capable de communiquer, l'entité spirituelle agit sur la volonté de l'homme et inspire ses productions artistiques. L'étude comparée, à la fois thématique et stylistique, du motif de l'ange chez Diego, Alberti et Lorca révèle en fin de compte les relations que ces trois poètes entretiennent avec Dieu, l'homme et leur environnement spatio-temporel
The character of the angel is well represented in the poetic works of G. Diego, R. Alberti and F. Garcia Lorca. This work will first analyse the links the above three poets establish between the heavenly creature and the world. Influenced by their religious upbringing and surroundings, they evoke its nature, its calling and its effect on the universe. The second part will examine the links between angels and Man. These three poets describe apparitions and build up mental images of angels. Specific moments in life -sin, death, loneliness, dream, suffering- are propitious to its appearance and tie it to the human condition : enslaved by time and matter, it takes human form and becomes the symbol of love. Lastly, we will study the relationship between angel and culture. Endowed with intelligence and capable of communicating, the spiritual being can act upon man's will and inspire his artistic works. The contrasting study, both through theme and style, of the recurring angel leitmotiv in Diego, Alberti and Lorca shows finally the relationships these three poets maintain with God, Man and their own direct environment

Jusqu'à une date récente, l'histoire de l'éducation des filles demeurait un champ d'étude encore pratiquement inexploré. Plusieurs ouvrages ont cependant déjà traité de la question de l'éducation au Québec à différents points de vue. Le plus récent et le plus complet semble être la grande synthèse de Louis-Philippe Audet, Histoire de l'enseignement au Québec, 1608-1971. Audet y traite de plusieurs aspects: législation, administration, pédagogie, qui nous permettent de retracer l'évolution du système scolaire québécois. Mais comme tous les auteurs des études reliées à ce domaine, Audet n'établit aucune distinction entre l'éducation des filles et celle des garçons. Par ailleurs, il paraît conscient du fait qu'il ne s'attarde pas à l'éducation des filles sur des avenues spécifiques: "Nous avons conscience de n'avoir pas rendu tout à fait justice à l'enseignement ménager et familial qui a connu, au Québec, durant un quart de siècle, voire un demi-siècle, une vogue de plus en plus considérable". La place accordée à l'éducation des filles dans cet ouvrage est sensiblement nulle. Ce constat est exemplaire et se retrouve dans la majorité des ouvrages consacrés à l'histoire de l'éducation. Depuis le début des années 1980, plusieurs historiennes ont commencé à s'intéresser à ce sujet. Elles ont vite perçu le rôle important joué par les congrégations religieuses féminines dans ce secteur et des recherches furent orientées dans cette direction. Ces recherches touchent différents aspects de la vie pédagogique des couvents: les programmes, la clientèle étudiante, la philosophie de l'enseignement, les manuels scolaires, les activités para-scolaires, les journaux étudiants. La presente memoria tiene por objeto recopilar y ordenar en forma sistemática la jurisprudencia administrativa emanada de la Superintendencia de Seguridad Social, que se refiere a la calificación de accidentes del trabajo, en el período comprendido entre los años 1992 y 2002, para lo cual este organismo interpreta la Ley 16.744, de 1968, sobre seguro social contra riesgos de accidentes del trabajo y enfermedades profesionales en materia del concepto de accidente del trabajo. La Ley 16.395, ley orgánica de la Superintendencia, en su artículo 38 letra f, faculta a este organismo para interpretar las leyes de previsión social. En el mismo sentido, el artículo 30 se remite expresamente a la ley de accidentes del trabajo, al entregarle la fiscalización de los organismos administradores del seguro social contemplado en ella. Por su parte, la propia Ley 16.744 otorga a la Superintendencia de Seguridad Social la atribución de controlar su aplicación y funcionamiento. De esta manera, las normas citadas otorgan a la entidad mencionada la competencia necesaria para conocer de las materias que digan relación con los accidentes del trabajo y, en consecuencia, pronunciarse sobre su ix calificación, dando lugar a una importante jurisprudencia administrativa a través de sus dictámenes. En cuanto a la forma como se estructurará el desarrollo de la presente memoria, cabe señalar que se ha dividido en dos partes. La primera contiene una introducción al tema, refiriéndose a la evolución que ha tenido la legislación sobre accidentes del trabajo en nuestro país. La segunda parte contiene la recopilación de la jurisprudencia administrativa emanada de la Superintendencia de Seguridad Social referida a la calificación de accidente del trabajo, para establecer el criterio que utiliza este organismo para interpretar la Ley 16.744, en lo que dice relación con el concepto de accidente del trabajo. Para ello, esta segunda parte se ha dividido en cinco capítulos. El primer capítulo contiene la definición del concepto de accidente del trabajo que nos da la Ley 16.744; sus elementos y su clasificación. El segundo capítulo, contiene la jurisprudencia administrativa emanada de la Superintendencia de Seguridad Social referida al concepto de accidente del trabajo. Aquí se encuentra recogida jurisprudencia que ha calificado los accidentes ocurridos como común, a causa y con ocasión del trabajo. El tercer capítulo, contiene la definición que nos da la ley de los accidentes que la doctrina asimila a los del trabajo como son los accidentes de trayecto, los sufridos por dirigentes sindicales, los accidentes concausales, los ocurridos mientras se ejecuta una labor impropia y los accidentes a causa o con ocasión de la capacitación ocupacional. El cuarto capítulo, contiene la jurisprudencia administrativa emanada de la Superintendencia de Seguridad Social referida a los accidentes asimilados a x los del trabajo definidos en el capítulo anterior. Cette recherche expose et analyse le processus de diffusion du theatre latino-americain en france depuis 1958, annee ou ce processus commence a se developper systematiquement, grace a la participation successive de nombreuses compagnies latino-americaines au theatre des nations de paris de 1958 a 1967 et au festival international de nancy de 1964 a 1977 (premiere partie). Cette diffusion dans les langues vernaculaires (espagnol et portugais) s'est vu renforcee par l'arrivee progressive d'un groupe de jeunes metteurs en scene latino-americains qui viennent se perfectionner a paris. Ils s'inserent petit a petit dans le milieu theatral professionnel. La majorite d'entre eux fait une carriere en france, abordant un repertoire d'une grande diversite, qui inclut un certain nombre de pieces latino-americaines (traduites en francais). This research expound and analyses the diffusion process of the latin american drama in france since 1958, the very year when this process became developping systematically, due to the successive participation of many latin-american companies at the theatre des nations in paris between 1958 and 1967 and at the international festival in nancy between 1964 and 1977 (first part). The thesis focuses on the subject of Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) in current times, particularly in the Brazilian context. Working theoretically, it seeks to define the subject, focuses on the distinction between the individual, the, subject and the actor and their characteristics in post and hypermodernity. It then points out the Movement in which this subject is born, shaped and acts, describing the CCR, its origins, expansion and peculiarities within the Catholic Church. This accomplished, it goes in search of the characteristics of the subjects of the CCR. Living in the postmodern condition or hypermodernity which values the culture of consumption and pleasure, while at the same time causes distress, fragmentation, disorientation, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal subject acquires individual happiness that gives him unity, emotional security, comfort, anchoring and communicative warmth. It searches and acquires an intimate religiousness, focused on family life, on fervor in individual and community prayer and ritual worship. Social and collective questions in a world of great injustice give way to concerns of individual order. It reinforces the moralizing and conservative values in the field of behavior. A tese focaliza o sujeito da Renovação Carismática Católica (R.C.C.) nos tempos atuais, particularmente no contexto brasileiro. Trabalhando teoricamente, busca definir o sujeito, focaliza a distinção entre indivíduo, sujeito e ator e as suas características na pós e na hipermodernidade. Em seguida, trabalha o Movimento no qual este sujeito nasce, se forma e age, descrevendo a R.C.C., suas origens, expansão e peculiaridades no âmbito da Igreja Católica. Feito isto, vai em busca das características dos sujeitos da R.C.C. Vivendo na condição pós-moderna ou na hipermodernidade, que preza a cultura do consumo e os gozos terrenos, e ao mesmo tempo causa angústia, fragmentação, desorientação, o sujeito carismático católico conquista uma felicidade individual que lhe proporciona unidade, segurança emocional, reconforto, ancoragem e calor comunicativo. The dissertation includes a critical essay on Jorie Graham's "The Guardian Angel of the Little Utopia and a full-length collection of poetry entitled Moonlight in Quota. The essay is a critical examination which argues that Graham's poems question Western anthropocentric thought through her constant arrangement of particular images (flowers, yellow sky, leaves) and her subsequent questioning of such intellectual and linguistic arrangements. Graham grapples with ideas of perception, questions the historical concepts of truth and knowledge, and engages in linguistic play both musically and imagistically. Each section is tied together by some overriding theme or persistent image: 1.) forgetting, Mexican-American border scenes 2.) poverty and faith shown through images of marginalized characters 3.) This paper examines the way in which two contemporary Canadian women writers, Anne Carson and Gail Scott, integrate subjective theory into two of their respective texts (Carson's Men In the Off Hours, and Scott's Main Brides). This study rejects the presentation of a single protagonist and instead focuses heavy emphasis upon the presentation of subjective experiments. In this paper the subjects in Men In the Off Hours and Main Brides are examined through the desires they exhibit for the absent other---that which the subject perceives he/she does not have---as central to his/her own conception of him/her self. The paper first acknowledges that subjective theory, the quest for the self, has maintained a central position in scholarly studies. It then proceeds to disseminate and critique Lacanian subjective theory thereby setting the stage for close readings of Carson's Men In the Off Hours through theorist Julia Kristeva's notion of abjection, and of Scott's Main Brides through Jacques Derrida's theory of the borderline. The paper closes by questioning the possibility of a fully realized subject.

Nox se inhoud en voorkoms word gemeet aan die definisie en kenmerke van kunsboeke en binne die konteks van die geskiedenis van boekkuns as praktyk geplaas. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is a study of Anne Carson’s book Nox. It investigates the form, aesthetic, process and composition of the text, and attempts to come to an understanding of the way in which Carson transforms a “brilliantly curated heap of scraps” into an autonomous artwork, “a thing that carries itself.” The first section of the thesis discusses Nox as an example of an artist’s book. The content and appearance of the book are measured against the definition and characteristics of artist’s books, before it is placed within the context of the history of bookwork as an artistic practice. The visual nature of the book, the ways in which it challenges conventions of bookmaking, its self-consciousness and self-reflexivity, as well as the author/artist’s means of creating unity between form and content are emphasised. The second section of the thesis investigates how translation is used at different levels in the process of creating the work. Translation is used as a way of drawing together the fragments and scraps from which Nox is essentially made. At a metaphoric level, the process of life writing is seen as a form of translation, which also runs parallel to the literal translation of Catullus’ “Poem 101” contained in the pages of Nox. At the same time, the transformation of a private object (Carson’s personal notebook in which she collected the original scraps) into an artwork for public consumption (the artist’s book Nox) represents a third level of translation, which embraces and contains the other two. Through a process of intersemiotic translation, Carson creates a version of “Poem 101” in her artists’ book that mimics the way in which the poem creates meaning. In the last section of the thesis, semiotics is applied as a theoretical framework to facilitate the reading of a text in which various media is present. A close reading of Nox is undertaken to demonstrate exactly how Carson goes about processing the fragments and scraps into a coherent unity. The close reading reveals that Nox can be read as a slow, intensified and exploded exercise in translation that gives expression to grief. The collection of poems entitled Afskrif consists of poems which question the possibility of originality and investigates replicas, photocopies, copies and rewritings in different ways.

El presente trabajo busca evaluar la decisión de la Corte Penal Internacional de excluir los cargos de tortura en el caso contra Jean Pierre Bemba. Esta decisión fue tomada por la Corte a pesar que, desde una temprana etapa procesal, los hechos del caso indicaban la existencia de actos de violencia que causaron grave sufrimiento y daño físico y psicológico, cometidos con la intención de intimidar y castigar a las víctimas que en su mayoría eran mujeres; lo que podía constituir crímenes de tortura como crimen de guerra y lesa humanidad. Luego de establecida la obligación de la Corte de aplicar una perspectiva de género para identificar, investigar y eventualmente castigar las conductas que enfrente conforme al principio de igualdad y a las normas particulares que regulan a la Corte, se expondrán los hechos que fueron probados en el caso, para hacer una revaloración jurídica de ellos conforme a dicha perspectiva. Al revalorar los hechos aplicando el test creado por los tribunales ad hoc para los casos de condena múltiple, se comprobará que es posible la concurrencia conjunta de la violación y la tortura como crímenes de guerra, mas no como crímenes de lesa humanidad. Además, se comprobará que las demás agresiones físicas y mentales infringidas, que superan a la penetración forzosa, son constitutivas de tortura como crímenes de lesa humanidad y de guerra, reconociendo en este último el motivo de discriminación basada en género. Finalmente, se explicará que la importancia de incluir a la tortura en la sentencia condenatoria, considerando todos los actos de violencia cometidos, no se limita a los fines de la pena de prevención y retribución, sino que se extiende a la necesidad de reestablecer el derecho de las víctimas, evitando que sea normalizado cualquier acto de violencia contra la mujer por su condición de tal.

The thesis explores the poetry (and some prose) of Plath, Sexton, Atwood and Rich in terms of the changing constructions of self-image predicated upon the female role between approx. 1950-1980.1 am particularly concerned with the question of how the discourses of femininity and feminism contribute to the scope of the images of the self which are presented. The period was chosen because it involved significant upheaval and change in terms of women's role and gender identity. The four poets' work spans this period of change and appears to some extent generally characteristic of its social, political and cultural contexts in America, Britain and Canada. (Other poets' work, for example Rukeyser, Lorde, Levertov, is included too. ) The poets were not chosen to illustrate a pre-feminist vs. feminist opposition since a major concern is to explore what I see to be the symbiotic relation between femininity and feminism (as also between orthodoxy and heresy). However the thesis is organised chronologically because periodisation is important for a consideration of the poetry's social setting. In wanting to connect the poetry with cultural and political circumstances as much as possible I have taken Edward Said's assertion of a text's position of 'being in the world', its potential as a cultural product to help reshape reality, and its value as a 'powerful weapon of both materialism and consciousness'. This is the starting point for the study which is circular and cumulative in shape, fundamentally thematic, though each chapter is a chronological exploration of the work of one specific poet, beginning with Plath and completing with Rich. A conclusion attempts to pull the strands of each together and consider the implications raised. The thesis has four general concerns which run through its particular focus on each poet. The first involves the relations between cultural practice and ideology; the second involves the ideology of gender (through exploration of femininity and feminism); the third involves authorial ideology (through the construction of self-image in relation to femininity and feminism) while the fourth involves these concerns in terms of the overall arena of women's struggle for meaning and selfdetermination in cultural practice. More specific elements of the study include collating and comparing self-images and attempting to make connections or chart changes where images such as witch, queen, handmaid, shamaness, goddess, earth mother, whore, madwoman, etc., re-occur. Usage of myth (particularly Persephone). the Gothic, 'and articulation of lesbian desire are also explored. The emergence of a female 'hero' self-image, in opposition to 'victim', seems to be a corollary of the impact , of feminism in Rich's poetry particularly, but this tendency can be traced back through Plath. I explore the celebration of nature and the power of essentialism in the construction of heroic female images, particularly in the figure of the mother flowing with milk at the centre of 'ecriture feminine'. The concluding chapter suggests that femininity did not constitute such a repressive constraint on self-image and writing practice for women as perhaps might be supposed; and that feminism, while opening up many empowering changes for women, has raised further disturbing and unresolved questions about identity, and even helped, in some of its aspects, to create a new 'orthodoxy' in which various aspects of experience cannot easily be articulated. My example is Rich's later work where it seems to admit itself limited by its own initially liberating strategies and looks further on towards new 'heresies.'

Pile groups are often used to provide support for structures. Capping a pile group further adds to the system's resistance due to the passive earth pressure from surrounding backfill. While ultimate passive earth pressure under static loading conditions can be readily calculated using several different theories, the effects of cyclic and dynamic loading on the passive earth pressure response are less understood. Data derived from the full-scale testing of a pile cap system with a densely compacted sand backfill under static, cyclic, and dynamic loadings was analyzed with particular focus on soil pressures measured directly using pressure plates. Based on the testing and analyses, it was observed that under slow, cyclic loading, the backfill stiffness was relatively constant. Under faster, dynamic loading, the observed backfill stiffness decreased in a relatively linear fashion. During cyclic and dynamic loading, the pile cap gradually developed a residual offset from its initial position, accompanied by a reduction in backfill force. While the pile cap and backfill appeared to move integrally during static and cyclic loadings, during dynamic loading the backfill exhibited out-of-phase movement relative to the pile cap. Observed losses in backfill contact force were associated with both cyclic softening and dynamic out-of-phase effects. Force losses due to dynamic loading increased with increasing frequency (which corresponded to larger displacements). Losses due to dynamic loading were offset somewhat by increases in peak force due to damping. The increase in contact force due to damping was observed to be relatively proportional to increasing frequency. When quantifying passive earth forces with cyclic/dynamic losses without damping, the Mononobe-Okabe (M-O) equation with a 0.75 or 0.8 multiplier applied to the peak ground acceleration can be used to obtain a reasonable estimate of the force. When including increases in resistance due to damping, a 0.6 multiplier can similarly be used.

This thesis examines the experience of loss in Anne Landsman’s novels The Devil’s Chimney (1997) and The Rowing Lesson (2008), and Rachel Zadok’s Gem Squash Tokoloshe (2005). Positing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as an impetus for emerging literary traditions within contemporary South African fiction, the argument begins by evaluating the reasons for the TRC’s widespread impact, and considers the role that the individual author may play within a culture which is undergoing dramatic socio-political upheavals. Through theoretical explication, close reading, and textual comparison, the argument initiates a dialogue between psychoanalysis and literary analysis, differentiating between two primary modes of experiencing loss, namely traumatic and nostalgic memory. Out of these sets of concerns, the thesis seeks to understand the inextricability of body, memory and landscape, and interrogates the deployment of these tropes within the contexts of traumatic and nostalgic loss, examining each author’s nuanced invocation. A central tenet of the argument is a consideration, moreover, of how the dialogic imagination has shaped storytelling, and whether or not narrative may provide therapeutic affect for either author or reader. The study concludes with an interpretation of the changing shape of literary expression within South Africa.

This dissertation will open on the definitions of the notions "Catholicism" and "Protestantism" so as to help better understand the religious dimension of the Northern-Irish question. It will be then possible to realize to what extent Stewart Parker (1941-1988) and Anne Devlin (1951-), two playwrights from Belfast, think the Ulster inhabitants lack any reference points when it comes to religion. Therefore, Parker and Devlin resort to the Bible, the collection of sacred texts that enables them to start again with some religious stability. A second part will show how much their plays, Pentecost (1987) and Afer Easter (1994), are infused with biblical imagery and episodes. Nevertheless, it will soon appear that these stories and parables, extracted from the Old and the New Testaments, are adapted to the Ulster situation. By emptying Christian-myths out of their contents, both playwrights will enable religion to serve this reality they vie; as disharmonious. This division that splits Ulster society will trigger off a deeper sense of fragmentation. This is how the crisis the Province is going through will be illustrated in both plays. After deconstructing the environment that surrounds them, Parker and Devlin take the responsibility of reconstructing it so as to re-define the Northern-Irish identity. More than religion, man is blamed for engendering this state of war; ultimately, it will be left to him to find a solution

Cette thèse étudie les moyens par lesquels des poésies interpellent leurs lecteurs et continuent à produire des significations qui dépassent par leur multiplicité la formation traditionnelle du sens. Ces œuvres créent des significations que l’on doit voir, et non comprendre, par le biais d’une lecture plurielle de composants [iconographiques, linguistiques, abstraits, sériels]. On prend comme point de départ l’étude des typologies du fragment et illustre comment la discrétion visuelle du fragment est intimement liée au développement de chaque poète. On interroge le rapport du mot à l’image afin de dégager des antécédents des procédés utilisés sur la page. On confirme que ces œuvres emploient des techniques « iconiques », comme le faisaient les calligrammes d’Apollinaire, mais y associent les techniques mallarméennes en étendant la lecture sur plusieurs pages. Les poésies de Howe, d’Albiach et de Kim présentent une synesthésie totale des correspondances entre des formes jusqu’à-là exploitées séparément. Par conséquent, ces œuvres radicalisent la notion de possible poétique en assimilant les techniques de la publicité, de la pop culture, du collage et du montage
This dissertation explores the diverse ways in which the work of Anne-Marie Albiach, Myung Mi Kim and Susan Howe visually organise the space of the page. The use of poetry’s visual dimension enlarges the traditional possibilities of the Word: to depict, multiply and produce an echo which is simultaneously resonant and visual. Exploiting the gaze also creates paradoxes through the juxtaposition of various elements. All of this calls into question the status of language, and poetic language in particular. This dissertation studies the ways these poets engage their readers as they produce a plurality of meanings which extend far beyond traditional sense-making. These works have significations which need to be seen rather than understood, via a reading process of its multifarious components [iconographic, linguistic, abstract, in series]. This study’s point of departure is the consideration of various types of fragments which illustrate how the fragment’s visual subtlety is intimately linked to each poet’s development. Connections between word and image are closely examined in order to locate the antecedents for the procedures being applied to the page. These works use “iconographic” techniques much as Apollinaire did in his calligrammes, while associating with these Mallarmé’s methods of drawing a poem’s reading out over numerous pages. The poetries of Howe, Albiach and Kim present a synesthesia of correspondences between all the forms which had heretofore been used separately. Consequently, these works radicalize the notion of what is possible in poetry by assimilating advertising, pop culture, collage and montage techniques

Cette thèse de doctorat a pour but d’analyser l’œuvre des poètes américaines Anne Sexton et Sylvia Plath à l’aune des études féminines et de genre en s’attachant à la question du mythe et du désenchantement. Plath et Sexton ont été étiquetées « poètes confessionnelles » ; il s’agit dans un premier temps de comprendre les mécanismes sur lesquels repose cette appellation qui participe de la construction de mythes autour des deux poètes et de les déconstruire. Plath et Sexton se sont connues à la fin des années 50, s’influençant l’une l’autre. Elles ont en commun une poétique du désenchantement, de leurs poèmes « confessionnels » à leurs réécritures de contes de fées et de mythes que l’on peut qualifier d’ « anti-contes ». Si leur style poétique diffère, les thèmes qu’elles abordent se répondent en écho, du trauma incestueux au corps féminin, de la femme au foyer à la représentation dichotomique de « la femme » en Madone et putain. Nous abordons ces sujets dans un deuxième temps en les reliant aux notions de voile et de pudeur. L’injonction à la pudeur provient en partie de la scène poétique bostonienne des années 50 à 70, de l’influence puritaine du poète Robert Lowell et des critiques misogynes. Cette étude s’applique dans un troisième temps à relier littérature et société en mettant en lumière l’influence du contexte patriarcal et poétriarcal sur et dans l’œuvre de Plath et de Sexton
This Ph.D. thesis analyzes the literary works of American poets Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath in light of Women’s and Gender Studies and considers the notions of myth and disenchantment. Plath and Sexton were labeled “confessional” poets; this study’s first section seeks to understand the underlying mechanisms of this appellation and how it participated in the construction of myths around the two poets and also aims to deconstruct these myths. Plath and Sexton met at the end of the ‘50s and influenced each other. Their poetics of disenchantment are a common trait in their literary works, from their “confessional” poems to their rewriting of fairy tales and myths which may be called “anti-tales.” Although their poetic styles differ, the themes they pursue are similar, from the incestuous trauma to the female body, from the American housewife to the representation of women through the Madonna/slut dichotomy. In this thesis’s second section, these topics are scrutinized and considered in relation to the notions of veil and modesty. Appeals for modesty stem in part from the Bostonian poetic stage of the 50s-70s, the puritan influence of New England poet Robert Lowell and the misogynistic critics of the time. This study’s third section links literature and society and emphasizes the influence of patriarchal and “poetriarchal” context on and in Plath’s and Sexton’s poetry and prose

Cette thèse porte un regard croisé sur les œuvres de deux auteures américaines contemporaines nées dans la région du Sud des Appalaches. Elle se lance pour objectif principal de définir et analyser les frontières et caractéristiques d’une identité littéraire proprement appalachienne ayant émergé ces trente dernières années aux États-Unis et connaissant actuellement un essor critique sans précédent. L’étude s’appuie sur une approche essentiellement pluridisciplinaire (histoire, géographie, économie, religion, philosophie) traçant les contours d’une littérature régionale motivée par une tension entre les notions d’espace (« space ») et de territoire (« place »), d’une part, et les dynamiques inverses de territorialisation (comment passe-t-on d’un corps physique à un corps textuel spécifiques ?) et déterritorialisation (comment ce corps textuel se transforme-t-il en réceptacle de considérations plus universelles ?), d’autre part. Tout en les remettant en perspective, l’analyse adopte comme cadre théorique les considérations philosophiques de Gilles Deleuze (fondateur du concept de « déterritorialisation ») et Gaston Bachelard (phénoménologue ayant développé la notion de « poétique de l’espace »)
The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to explore the writings of two American women writers born and raised in the Appalachian South. It attempts to define and analyze the characteristics of a typically Appalachian literary identity that has been taking shape in the United States over the past thirty years and which is only now starting to receive nationwide and worldwide critical acclaim. The approach is mainly interdisciplinary (history, geography, economics, religion and philosophy provide different ways to delve into the topic) and seeks to outline a regional literature which has been essentially fueled by a tension between the concepts of “nature” (the physical place around us) and “environment” (the more complex result of the interplay between nature and man or woman). The opposed dynamics of regional grounding (how does the writer move from a specific physical natural body to a specific literary body?) and regional un-grounding or uprooting (how does this literary body turn into a receptacle of more universal emotions and concerns?) also shed light on the idiosyncrasies of this Appalachian literature. The analysis uses as a theoretical framework the philosophical views of Gilles Deleuze (the French philosopher who coined the concept of “deterritorialisation”) and Gaston Bachelard (the French phenomenologist having developed the notion of “poetics of space” recently rediscovered and explored in the United States)
