Focussing on post-reunification Germany, this thesis tries to determine in which way Germany has a Geopolitics, how does this Geopolitics reflect on the governments of Helmut Kohl, Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel, and what are their main characteristics and/or key factors. At the same time, it tries to understand whether this Geopolitics is new or presents verified elements previously and how it influences the German strategic action on the international scene in cultural, economic and military terms. For this, it used the concept of tempo tríbio, identifying the key factors intervening in the Geopolitics of the present regarding the post Reunification period in function of the Geopolitics of the past and the Geopolitics of the projected future, and the model of José Marini (1985) in what concerns to geopolitical space and the way in which stability and variability are combined. The approach is qualitative, the analysis adopted is interdisciplinary and made from bibliography and documentation primarily in German, benefeting from our continued attendance of German language and culture courses taught by native Germans at the Goethe-Institut in Lisbon It is conclued that the Geopolitics of Germany is a reflection of the position occupied by Germany in space. Despite the maintenance of past characteristics, this Geopolitics evolves towards a marked economic and cultural Geopolitics. Germany does not gain more power through War, but Peace, taking advantage of the international organizations in which it is a state party, namely the EU, NATO and UN to consolidate and increase its power. This evolution is a result of the fear, shame and guilt that Germany still seems to feel about the War and Holocaust, the constraints to sovereignty and independence in the postwar period, and Reunification in 1990.

Full textDuring electoral campaigns one can always hear key words like personalization, negativism and sensationalism. While these terms may represent the harsh reality of modern campaigns in the US, the results for Germany are rather ambiguous, according to prominent scientific studies. Following the chronology of the German 2005 election of the Bundestag, we tried to evaluate the presentation of candidate Angela Merkel, who ran for chancellor’s office, in the German quality press. Our main goal was the verification of a change in the way the papers presented Angela Merkel, hence possibly influencing the electorate. Furthermore, we tried to find proof of a general trend of personalization in Germany’s elections of 2005

This thesis mainly discusses German foreign policy towards Russia during the Merkel period(2005-2018).At the beginning of this thesis, I explain German Chancellor Angela Dorothea Merkel's diplomatic thoughts from four aspects:Merkel's strategic thinking, value diplomacy, geopolitical thinking, and views on Putin. These four aspects are related to Merkel's strategic thinking based on her personal and national identity, her values, and her East German background. German foreign policies have resulted partly from these four aspects based on personal factors such as Merkel's personal preferences, values, positioning, education, and background. All these policies have directed national interests in Germany. However, these four aspects also contain some irrational factors from Merkel's personal preferences. Therefore, when these irrational factors came into conflict with national interests of Germany, Merkel was not rigid and did not insist on making decisions by her own personal beliefs. She would adjust her ways to make decisions according to German national interests in due time. In terms of Germany’s policy towards Russia, the period of former German Chancellor Gerhard Fritz Kurt Schröder(1998-2005)was a honeymoon between Germany and Russia. Schröder even said, “The relationship between Germany and Russia is so good that it can't be better.”Merkel became the new German Chancellor in 2005. During her first and second term, Germany’s Russia policy was basically extended from the Schröder period. Germany and Russia proposed the concept of a strategic partnership in the intergovernmental consultations in Berlin in 2000. Merkel took Russia as a strategic partner mainly for economic cooperation. From Merkel’s perspective, the relationship between Germany and Russia was limited. Since Merkel took office, both Germany and Russia have lacked further interaction. Among the foreign ministers since the beginning of Merkel's government, it has seemed that only the former Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier from the Social Democratic Party was more pro-Russian while other foreign ministers followed Merkel's footsteps to keep a distance from Russia. Finally, this article explores the results and influences of Germany's foreign policy towards Russia. Such results and influences are explored from the perspective of the distribution of power in the international system. These results and influences can be said to be partly influenced by Germany's policy towards Russia while others are affected by changes in the international environment. Therefore, in such an international system and environment, Germany and Russia can be said to have been forced to play roles that are contrary to their original wishes. The significance of the "Ukrainian crisis" that broke out at the end of 2013 was that it highlighted the long-standing advantage of the sea powers(western countries)that has been expanding eastward(NATO and the EU's eastward expansion). It can be said that the west’s advantage has caused the land power of Russia to maintain its own geopolitical strategic interests. This can be considered a counterattack. During Merkel's terms, the role of Russia has been transformed from “partner”(security partner, prominent partner, economic partner)in Germany’s White Paper 2006into “rival”(challenge, threat)in Germany’s White Paper 2016. Although Germany-Russia relations in the White Paper 2006 did not appear as a "strategic partner", Merkel's government has indeed made progress in this direction in the beginning. After the Russia-Georgia war and the Ukrainian crisis, German-Russian relations have moved farther and farther away from being a "strategic partnership". Merkel’s government believes that Russia has voluntarily renounced such a partnership role and has potentially become a "rival" of Germany, the EU, and NATO. In fact, unless there is a conflict like World War II between Germany and Russia, Russia will always be Germany’s “cooperative security partner and economic partner”.

Numbers of applicants for asylum skyrocketed after collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, and most of them were from Yugoslavia. At that time, the Germans had just completed reunification, named the Federal Republic of Germany. The European Union actively integrated as well as maintained a more prominent concept of human rights. Hence rules of asylum and the standards in the common European system were established and it was hoped that a stable European Union would be created. In 2015, refugee crisis has occurred once again. Not surprisingly that destination of refugees from North Africa and the Middle East is still Germany. The Merkel government embarks on a “Welcome Policy” which is similar to the practices in the 1990s.The continuity of Germany’s refugee policy are significant factors in this article. Moreover, as a regional power in Europe, practices of Germany’s asylum policy would have influence not only on the domestic Germany but also on the consolidation of states in the European Union. Change in this region has been momentous since it is the key to European cooperation. The historical legacies help in developing appropriate plans in Germany when asylum seekers dramatically spiral in 2015.Through specific and better institutions, Germany draws a self-reinforcing path. All in all, the conclusion address causes of the Merkel government''s policy of refugee issues and understand how the other European countries adapt policy to refugees.

Euro is the second largest currency in the world and Euro-zone is the number two economy legging behind the US. Under the impact of global financial storm, Europe’s debt crisis broke out due to the problems with structural factors and financial deficits. Germany, as the largest economy in EU, plays a decisive role and its policy stances could affect the development of European debt crisis. This thesis uses political system theory to explore the Merkel government’s policy on handling the debt crisis of EU. It finds that the Merkel government has been influenced by both external and internal factors, for instance, the maintenance of EU integration, the pressures from international community, domestic public opinions and economic situation at home. As a result, the Merkel government proposes a policy guideline of “strengthening economic governance”. This policy has successfully reduced debts and deficits in EU member states and promoted their economic growth sluggishly. On the other hand, it also creates the policy debates between “austerity” and “stimulus”, which hurt the Germany-France relations and become an inevitable challenge in front of EU.

Germany’s perception of its role in the international community is characterized by its pursuit of EU integration and non-militarization. The missions and objectives of Germany are reflective of its national interests, seeking directions of Germany’s survival and development. Today, Germany has successfully abandoned the Cold War mentality of forced responsibility and bipolarity of international system, replacing it with a good-neighbor policy which prioritizes its national goals. The paper is aimed at studying the roles Germany has played internationally since its reunification in October 1990, particularly the making of the human rights diplomacy and the continuity of its foreign policy. By applying the role theory and defining states as the main actors in international relations, this paper examines how the changing roles of Germany influences its human rights diplomacy and how human rights issues defined Berlin’s foreign policy between 2005 and 2009. In addition to the remarks by Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Dr. Franz-Walter Steinmeier, the paper seeks to explore the principles and directions of Germany’s human rights diplomacy through cases about Afghanistan, Iraq, and China.

Strategic Analysis of Biographical Literature Translation’s Culture-specific Words from the Perspective of Sematic Translation : A Case Study of Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt Abstract The study aims to analyze the translation strategy of biographical literature. The research subject is the culture-specific words in Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt, which in 2014 published and was written by German authors Stefan Kornelius, translated into Chinese by Yang, Mon-Ru. According to the theories of cultural layers by several culture scholar, the author divide culture into surface culture and deep culture, and Try to classify the culture-specific words in Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt into the two cultures. In addition, the author analyzes the characteristics of biographical literature translation texts by Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt, and classifies them through the cultural layers. The purpose of this study is to explore and analyze the translation strategies of culture-specific words in the text of biographical translation from the perspective of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation, and to explore the translation strategy of different cultural layers and types in biographical literature. The study shows the statistical data of culture-specific words and the results of the analysis that the translation strategies of Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt. Found that autobiographical representation of the expressive text, whether they are explicit or implicit culture-specific words, most of them use naturalization strategy for translation. However, in the same work, some parts of the text need to take semantic translation, some parts are required to use the communicative translation, especially when the cultural blank turns up. Therefore, in a translation work can see the two strategies complete each other. There is no absolute semantic translation works, and no absolute communicative translation works. The basic task of the translator is to convert the concept of foreign culture and cultural information into the information, that the Chinese readers can understand and accept. In addition to the translation problem of the language, it also includes the cultural value, especially the political culture, the political idea, the equal transmission strategy of the policy thinking. In addition, the translation should consider the original text type, the importance of semantic units and the purpose of translation, and to the appropriate translation theory as the basis, to consider when to take which translation strategy. Keywords: biographical literature, culture-specific word, semantic translation

Angela Merkel was elected as the first female Chancellor of Germany since 2005. She has been named as the de facto president of Europe from TIME MAGEZINE because of her tough leading style. Being a woman, born in East Germany, studying physics, those backgrounds own her extensive attention. As an opposition party leader, Merkel has criticized Schroder’s China policy and indicated that Germany has sacrificed Human Rights while pursuing economic benefits. German-U.S relation was also broken because of Schroder’s anti-Iraq war attitude. Therefore, Angela Merkel emphasized that to repair the relations between Germany and the U.S. is the prior task when she made her inaugural speech. To maintain the coherence china policy also takes an important part, however, during her first official visit to China, she stated some sensitive issues toward China and made China found that Germany’s China policy has already changed. 23th Sep. 2007, Angela Merkel met Dalai-Lama in Federal Chancellor’s Office despite the seriously pressure from China. China cancelled a series of official meeting schedules as revenge. At the same time, CDU/CSU Union issued “Asia as strategic challenge and chance for Germany and Europe” to regard China as a competitor and should reinforce the link with democracy countries in Pacific-Asia like India, Japan and Australia, in advanced, to prevent the threat of China rising. This resolution shows the new government’s value oriented foreign policy. The relations between Germany and China have never been so worse. Sino-German relations have normalized and been back on the track with Foreign Minister Steinmeier’s efforts in January 2008. The world has been under financial crisis from 2008 to 2009, Germany and China issued a joint statement showing their determination to recover world economy. The both countries also built “Comprehensive strategic partnership” in 2010, held inter-governmental talks in 2011. The relations between Germany and China are different from 2005 and have even exceeded Schroder government under Merkel’s leading. This Thesis is trying to review and analyze the relations between Germany and China from political, economic and cultural aspects. In political aspect, German-U.S. relations are also included. From the three aspects analysis indicate the international, domestic and individual factors of German’s China policy shift. After being a chancellor, participating and accumulating experience in politic affairs, realpolitik leads her beyond ideology and realism while china rising. Angela Merkel regards national interest as the top priority and adjusts her China policy.

Since the outbreak of "Arab Spring" at the end of 2010, a large number of Middle East refugees have been forced to leave their homes to escape from the war and turn into Europe, which is similar to the geographical location and accessible. The Syrian boy, who was widely circulated on the Internet from the beginning of 2015, is drawing up the world''s awareness of the refugee situation and aroused enthusiastic response. In August 2015, German Chancellor Angela Merkel took the lead in calling for the open acceptance of Syrian refugees, increasing the gravity of the refugees to Europe. However, the policy is always incomplete, as more and more social problems occurred, people begin to doubts the policy. The purpose of this study is to explore the differences and effects of refugee problem before and after their entry into Germany. The range of domestic factors is very broad, so the author focus on endogenous factors, from the "decision maker", "political parties", "public opinion" and "emergencies" these four factors, to explore the interaction within these variables and Meckel refugee policy. And in the end of the study, will summed up which endogenous factor has the greatest influence for Meckel''s refugee policy.

The research will find out how and to what extent the press media have influenced Merkel's current image through reports about the policy of admitting refugees in 2015 under her government, the terrorist attacks in Paris and on New Year's Eve 2015/16 in Cologne. The question of how Merkel's image has changed during the refugee crisis is also crucial. In this work, the refugee topic and the above-mentioned incidents are examined to find out the connection in-between. The cornerstone of the research question is the agenda-setting theory. The theory is mainly about the influence of media on the image of politicians. The way in which it informs politicians, including the amount of news and frequency of messages, shapes the image of politicians for the audience. The opinion of the population has changed after they acknowledged the Information through the news. Furthermore, the election results have been influenced by this. The image of German Chancellor Angela Merkel is examined on the basis of important media reports with high circulation. In contrast to the time of the economic crisis in recent years, chancellor Merkel has been subject to some harsh and personal criticism. The image change and its connection with the refugee topic in Germany and what role did the press media play in this time are regarded as an interesting research subject. News from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) and Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) have been collected and analyzed using the inductive method. The news were categorized under the following factors: 1. relevance to Merkel’s image or person. 2. Whether the news were informing about incidents or the politicians were personally attacked. After the categorization, the quantities of news were compared with the results of the selected survey institute "Infratest dimap" and "Forschungsgruppe Wahlen". By analyzing the rise and the fall, relevance between the selected incidents, their messages and survey results was found. However, the subject of the work is not whether Chancellor Merkel has made a proper political decision regarding her refugee policy, but the reaction of the population and the consequences on their image.
