Abstract:
This thesis aims to describe a poetics of Angela Carter's fiction. It examines the way in which Carter's novels and some of her short stories mobilise the reader into speculation about possible ontologies, provoking them to think beyond the binary oppositions which sustain Western metaphysical thought. The thesis focuses upon Carter's "originary" symbol, the first motif in her first novel, which is a scar. In Chapter One, I argue that the scar is a re-presentation of the mythical wound of female castration which actually works to challenge patriarchal discourses on femininity and female sexuality, introducing feminist theories in order to fully explain the gaps in such discourses. Each of the five chapters which construct the thesis traces the way in which the scar/womb/wound image opens up different but related issues surrounding sexuality representation, signification and transgression. Shadow Dance, The Magic Toyshop, The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, The Passion of New Eve, The Bloody Chamber, Nights at the Circus and Wise Children are all considered as interrogatory texts in dialogue with one another and with other literature and theories, effecting a breakdown between disciplines and generic categories, yet simultaneously creating a dynamic "new" form of textuality which can be viewed as potentially transfon-native.

Abstract:
The risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) on electronic devices and systems depends on the charge state of the operator and nearby objects. This thesis aimed at contributing to the development of a measurement methodology to characterize the state of charge of the operators and textile materials, in order to determine their ability to produce harmful effects. Direct and indirect measuring methods have been proposed for assessing the charge of operators in three situations of practical interest. Other techniques, such as surface potential and electric field intensity measurements were used for monitoring the state of charge of textile materials. Behavioural models have been established for the charging and discharging of these materials, using the methodology of experimental design. Tests on samples of polypropylene and polyester have also validated two methods for accelerating the reduction of the charge of insulating nonwoven media using ion generators or corona discharge produced by electrodes energized from sinusoidal or triangular high voltage supplies, at frequencies up to 400 Hz. An example of static electricity on a silicon wafer is also discussed in relation with an application to the fabrication of mechanical and electronic micro-systems. Refinement of the measurement methodology is a prerequisite for the adoption of best strategies to control electrostatic risks in an industrial environment

Yeandle, Heidi. "Angela Carter's (de)philosophising of Western thought." Thesis, Swansea University, 2014. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa42410.

Full text
Abstract:
What do Plato, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Hobbes, Rene Descartes, John Locke, David Hume, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Gilbert Ryle, Immanuel Kant, and the Marquis de Sade have in common? Spanning centuries and - when it comes to Plato - millennia, they are key figures of Western philosophy who have discussed ideas of reality, knowledge, existence, the state of nature, and morality, ideas which are central to Angela Carter's novels. In this thesis, I position Carter as a (de)philosophiser, and argue that she deconstructs the pivotal theories of Western philosophy, while also philosophising on the same concepts, contributing a female voice to this overwhelmingly androcentric discipline. In doing so, I contribute the first in- depth discussion of Carter's philosophical intertextuality to Carter criticism, going beyond Carter's explicit references that, to date, have been acknowledged by Carter scholars; although this is an original topic, the originality of my argument is boosted by my references t) the archival material that comprises the Angela Carter Papers Collection. The thesis is structured according to Carter's engagement with the range of Western thinkers aforementioned, focusing on Plato's impact on Heroes and Villains (1969), The infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972) and The Passion of New Eve (1977) in Chapter One, while Chapter Two is dedicated to Carter's analysis of Hobbes and Rousseau's arguments in Heroes and Villains. In Chapter Three I discuss Descartes (in relation to Doctor Hoffman), Locke (vis-a-vis Shadow Dance, 1966, New Eve, and Nights at the Circus, 1984), and Hume, with reference to Several Perceptions (1968) and Love (written 1969, published 1971). Wittgenstein and Ryle's impact on Doctor Hoffman and Carter's time in Japan are examined in Chapter Four. The fifth and final chapter concentrates on Carter and moral philosophy, paying particular attention to Kant and Sade and discussing Shadow Dance, Several Perceptions, and Love, as well as Doctor Hoffman and The Sadeian Woman (1979).

Sauvage, Julie. "Esthétiques du "roman-théâtre" chez Angela Carter." Bordeaux 3, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006BOR30065.

Full text
Abstract:
This study of the aesthetics of theatricality in Angela Carter’s novels takes Anny Sadrin’s definition of the ‘theatrical’ novel as a starting-point. Resorting to this dramatic sub-genre of the novel, in which the text is performed on the reader’s ‘inner scene’, Carter maintains a tension between the main aesthetic theoretical models of presence and representation. The first part analyses the notion of tableau, borrowed from painting by both the novel and the theater, as well as the relationship between narrative and image that it creates within the novel. Carter overcomes the opposition of spatial to temporal arts by imparting the specific rhythm of images to the narrative, presenting them as manifestations of a living body and turning still lives into tableaux. The second part examines Carter’s conception of the body as represented in her novels and shows that its paradoxical theatricality rests on the main metaphors of petrification and cannibalism. The author goes back to the roots of the theater as a ritual sacrifice to define a space for the recreation of a free subject. Undeniably mortal and material, but belonging to the realm of language and discourse, the body provides the basis for the reinvention of a performing subject playing with signs to produce his/her identity – a view at odds with the assimilation of the feminine to the material that seems to underly the Bakhtinian notion of the carnivalesque. This finally allows to examine how Carter turns reading itself into a bodily process, presenting her ‘dramatic novels’ as simulacra of voices. Her texts literally call for a performing reader, thus made to produce his/her identity through reading, like an actor

Abstract:
In this research I examine artistic doubt as a way to unlace the becoming of a portrait. My interest is in the personal encounter between the painter and sitter. My muse is the sixteenth-century Italian portrait painter, Sofonisba Anguissola and through both creative practice and exegetical writing, which takes an epistolary approach, I investigate the process, mistakes and interruptions of making that can impact on portrait painting. As such doubt is positioned as caches of ontological moments.

Carvalho, Fernanda Sousa. "Sexuality and gender in contemporary women's Gothic fiction - Angela Carter's and Anne Rice's Vampires: Angela Carter's and Anne Rice's Vampires." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ECAP-7SHFJY.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I provide an analysis of Angela Carter's and Anne Rice's works based on their depiction of vampires. My corpus is composed by Carter's short stories 'The Loves of Lady Purple' and 'The Lady of the House of Love' and by Rice's novels The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned. My analysis of this corpus is based on four approaches: a comparison between Carter's and Rice's works, supported by their common use of vampire characters; an investigation of how this use consists of a particular way of exploring gothic elements, related to the contemporary context; an identification of the mechanisms through which this use of vampire characters conveys discourses on the issues of sexuality and gender that take in the 1970s and 1980s; and an investigation of the possibility for the vampire characters to express such discourses, in terms of their symbolisms. I demonstrate here that Rice and Carter explore the potential of abjection of the vampire and the subversive potential of a gothic representation of life experiences to question and subvert in their works patriarchal ideologies about the issues of sexuality and gender. This strategy of questioning and subversion is informed by the debates about these two issues in late-twentieth century, a period marked by the development of theories about sexuality and gender, by political movements towards sexual and gender freedom, and by the eminence of the AIDS epidemic that influenced the direction followed by these theories and movements. My analysis of Carter's and Rice's works demonstrates that, although they are different in their focuses and concerns, both authors represent, through their vampires, discourses against the imposition of gender roles and of sexualities by patriarchal societies, reflecting the contemporary view of gender and sexuality as constructed, complex, and fluid categories. In this sense, their works can be said to characterize a contemporary gothic fiction written by women.
xxx

Pirincci, Yildiz Sinem. "The Dilemma Of The Gaze In Angela Carter." Master's thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613850/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes and compares Angela Carter&rsquo
s Nights at the Circus and Elif Safak&rsquo
s Mahrem (The Gaze) from the perspective of theories of the patriarchal gaze. The study argues that the female protagonists in Nights at the Circus and Mahrem (The Gaze) have a dilemma in relation to the gaze. On the one hand, the gaze makes these characters passive spectacles in front of the audience and objectifies them. On the other hand, the gaze appears to be a necessity for a sense of identity and order. The theoretical framework used to analyze the novels from the perspective of the patriarchal gaze includes John Berger&rsquo
s Ways of Seeing, which is about visual representations in Western art and Laura Mulvey&rsquo
s article &ldquo
Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema&rdquo
, which analyzes women&rsquo
s position in Hollywood movies. In order to explore the dilemma the protagonists find themselves in, on the other hand, Sigmund Freud&rsquo
s theory of scopophilia, Jacques Lacan&rsquo
s discussion of the role of the gaze in psychosexual development and identity formation and Mich&eacute
l Foucault&rsquo
s evaluation of the gaze as a tool for discipline have been made use of. The comparative analysis of the two novels within this theoretical framework aims to demonstrate the complexity and universality of the issue and provide further food for thought for feminist thinking on this topic.

Abstract:
This research used critical discourse analysis to explore the ways people from refugee backgrounds’ participation in music is constructed in the Australian news media. Using Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework, findings revealed that, while the media ostensibly tells stories of hopefulness derived from the joy of music, the workings of racialised power within the discourse remain deeply intertwined. Social tropes which often accompany music intersect with deficit and othering discourses surrounding people from refugee backgrounds. This research emphasises the need for a critically reflective social work practice to resist and challenge dominant discourses that disempower people seeking refuge.

Abstract:
This program of research linked police and health data collections to investigate the potential benefits for road safety in terms of enhancing the quality of data. This research has important implications for road safety because, although police collected data has historically underpinned efforts in the area, it is known that many road crashes are not reported to police and that these data lack specific injury severity information. This research shows that data linkage provides a more accurate quantification of the severity and prevalence of road crash injuries which is essential for: prioritising funding; targeting interventions; and estimating the burden and cost of road trauma.

Notaro, Anna. "Fluctuations of fantasy : postmodernist contamination in Angela Carter's fiction." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1996. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2969/.

Full text
Abstract:
What I am offering in this thesis is a kind "contaminated" reading, that is a reading deeply involved in the stylistic and ideological dissonances of Carter's fiction, to the point that they are assimilated within different and, in some cases, contrastive interpretative paths. But the contamination works also on another level: to read Carter is to tackle some very complex questions, including the possible articulations of Marxism and deconstruction/postmodernism or, more generally, the role played by ideology with reference to the tendencies and movements deriving from poststructuralism; my argument is that Carter's writing itself is heavily "contaminated" by postmodernist aesthetics despite her implicit denial and negative attitude towards it. In the thesis I have discussed three collections of short-stones (The Bloody Chamber in Chapter 1, Black Venus and Fireworks in Chapter II) and four novels (The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr. Hoffman, The Passion of New Eve. Nights at Circus and Wise Children from Chapter HI to VI). I have also quoted extensively from the numerous interviews given by Carter in different stages of her career and from her critical works, in particular from The Sadeian Woman, a sort of aesthetic manifesto for a literary corpus in which the worlds of Eros and sexuality play a crucial role in transgressing and subverting the habitual dichotomies of gender. In the final Chapter (VII) Carter's work is located in the framework of the debate between feminist and postmodernist thought.
