Abstract:
This paper addresses the dynamics of Circuit of Culture model in relation to a celebrity’s publicity efforts at promoting humanitarian activities. This analysis presents the publicity activities of Angelina Jolie using theoretical frameworks of the circuit of culture model which are; dynamics of representation, construction, consumption, identity and regulation. This paper presents several modes and points through which this model applies to her personality and humanitarian activities. This provides a description of how publicity works, thereby validating the importance of the model in the planning publicity activities for both individuals and organisations. The author conducts a case study using the method of content analysis and explores several academic literatures, texts, videos and media tools that demonstrates publicity activities by this celebrity. This case study reveals that actions and activities embarked upon by Angelina Jolie depicts a clearer picture of how the circuit of culture model works. Each point on the model linking to one another and acting as tools to supporting the other.

Via, Sandra Elizabeth. "Celebrity Diplomacy in the Current Global Economy: A Feminist Perspective." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77138.

Full text
Abstract:
Using gender lenses, this dissertation examines the emergence of celebrity diplomats as viable political actors, providing diplomatic services focused on negotiation and humanitarian aid, in current international politics and the global economy. More specifically, this dissertation uses feminist political economy literature to examine how neoliberal globalization has contributed to the growing role of celebrity diplomats in international politics. I argue that the increased presence and involvement of celebrity diplomats in the post-9/11 era is the result of neoliberal globalization and the neoliberal state's shift toward privatization of the public sector, increased militarization, and increased emphasis on commodification and consumption. In order to examine this phenomenon, this dissertation examines the diplomatic endeavors of two celebrity diplomats, Angelina Jolie and George Clooney. More specifically, this study provides an in-depth analysis of Jolie and Clooney's roles and involvement in international politics. Moreover, this dissertation examines the gender roles of celebrity diplomats. Therefore, this dissertation provides a gender analysis of Jolie and Clooney's diplomatic endeavors. I argue that Jolie's diplomacy reflects her role as mother, while Clooney takes a masculine approach to his diplomatic agenda. Finally, the dissertation concludes with an analysis of the ways in which celebrity diplomacy can further promote a neoliberal agenda.

Abstract:
‘Celebrity’ has become a growing field of critical inquiry and cultural interest in twenty-first century society. Celebrities embody a host of meanings and engender larger ideological and discursive practices, in which they articulate expressions of social, cultural and political power that attach meaning to public individuals. Beginning with the late-twentieth century, celebrities have come to occupy spaces that exist beyond popular culture platforms, most notably in politics and international diplomacy. In spite of its typical association with superficial discussions of gossip and cheap entertainment, celebrities have become the site of anxiety in a capitalist society. To come to terms with these growing anxieties concerning celebrity and its accoutrements, this thesis explores the embedded complexities and consequences of the celebrity system within the framework of what has dubiously been called ‘celebrity politics.’ Through a detailed examination of this phenomenon, this thesis explores the coalescing spheres of Hollywood and the White House, where ‘celebrity’ and ‘politician’ have become interchangeable monikers. In addition to examining the historical conditions that have given rise to the phenomenon, this study examines contemporary articulations of the ‘celebrity politician,’ focusing on Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn and President Barack Obama. Discussion of these figures is framed by critical theory and media studies to better understand their location within the contemporary Western landscape.

Abstract:
This chapter centers on global motherhood, a conceptual label that defines the ethical underpinnings of female celebrities’ undertakings beyond borders. The analysis of global motherhood is located within the ethics of care, noting that global expressions of care ethics are useful for thinking through celebrities’ maternal practices beyond borders. The research focuses on the maternal practices and discourses of Cate Blanchett (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] Goodwill Ambassador since 2016) and Angelina Jolie (UNHCR Special Envoy since 2012), in particular their tendency to relate to refugees through their personal experiences as mothers, their sense of cosmopolitan obligation, and the racial implications of their global engagements. The chapter advances the argument that cosmopolitan thought is abstract, is gendered, and prioritizes men’s moral reasoning rather than women’s ethical stories and experiences. Nonetheless, cosmopolitanism can provide fertile ground for studying celebrity humanitarianism because celebrities themselves resort to cosmopolitan-inflected language in describing their activism. Moreover, the study of the other-regarding acts of individual celebrities can reduce the abstraction inherent in cosmopolitanism. These arguments are sustained through a discursive analysis of texts that center on celebrity global motherhood, as performed by Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett in the area of refugee policy.

"Entrepreneurial and determined, Lorenzo di Bonaventura came to Hollywood after studying intellectual history at Harvard and collecting an MBA from Wharton. The New Hampshire-raised producer held executive positions at two major studios before becoming a full producer in 2003 with a deal at Paramount. He got his start in a business position at Columbia Pictures and quickly found his way into the power corridors. He transferred to Warner Bros. where he ultimately rose to head of worldwide production. There he oversaw the blockbuster franchises The Matrix and Harry Potter. Di Bonaventura credits his “Warners education” for giving him the skillset and mindset that breeds sound moviemaking. He’s known for this tenacity and his creativity, as well as for being responsible to the nancial side of lmmaking. He’s accustomed to the steady ow of studio backing, but he doesn’t take it for granted. “You’re still convincing someone to spend a lot of money, and no one parts with a lot of money easily,” he says. “Every movie feels that way to me.” As a producer, Di Bonaventura cooked up two action franchises for Paramount—Transformers (2007, 2009, 2011) and G.I. Joe (2009, 2013). Along the way, he also birthed hits such as spy thriller Salt, starring Angelina Jolie, and action ensemble Red (both released in 2010 through other studios). He continues to keep his slate packed with still more original projects as well as sequels. “There’s no time to rest on your laurels and there’s no time to believe you’ve got something done until it’s done,” he says."
