Abstract:
The utility of DNA homology as tool for determination of divergence of phanerogamic taxa is discussed. DNA-DNA hybridization values of living gymnosperms and members of primitive angiospermic families indicate highest homology between Gnetum and Magnoliaceae, supporting the gnetalean origin of angiosperms. Conifers like Thuja occidentalis show no less homology with primitive angiosperm families than do the cycads. The living monocots and gymnosperms have diverged even farther. The primitive dicotyledonous families revealed fairly high homology among themselves but the other more derived famili

The coal and carbonaceous shales collected from the Tura Formation (late Palaeocene) of Nangwalbibra, East Garo Hills, Meghalaya, have been analysed for palynological study to deduce palaeovegetation and palaeoclimate. The palynoflora represented by pteridophytic spores and angiospermic pollen grains shows similarity with other contemporaneous deposits of the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. The palynoassemblage dominated by angiosperms depicts subtropical to tropical vegetation during the late Palaeocene in the region. The fossil pollen grains show their similarity with modern plan

A total of 309 species were collected of which 299 are Angiosperms while the remaining 10 are that of Gymnosperms. Trees are the dominant constituents of the woody species composition of the Banaras Hindu University campus. The number of evergreen woody species exceeds the deciduous woody species. The Leguminosae, Apocynaceae and Euphorbiaceae are the dominant families of Angiospermic flora of the campus.

The presented paper deals with the comparative morphological method (typology) combined with developmental studies as a means for understanding phylogenetic relations between different plant forms. This method becomes illuminated by two examples. The first are the phylogenetic relations between liverworts and ferns from which many follow the open repens-type. The second illuminates the much more complicated relations’between the primitive, tree-like angiosperms which returned via shrubs and herbal perennial plants to the delicate plants of the open repens-type. Coastal ecosystems are highly threatened worldwide by multiple anthropogenic stressors that act at a range of spatial scales, from local to the global, and adversely affect their ecological functions and associated biodiversity. Global warming is one of the most pervasive stressors, and the assessment of how the species (or other levels of biological organization) react to it is an urgent need in a rapidly warming world. Moreover, thermal stress rarely acts in isolation from other stressors. The potential synergies among global warming and local stressors is of particular concern in what it re

Abstract:
Orobanche is an important parasitic weed. For developing novel methods for its control, a thorough understanding of crucial stages of its development is needed. Therefore, the objectives of this project were characterization of Orobanche germination stimulants, analysis of mechanisms of haustorial penetration, and characterization and isolation of penetration enzymes. The first highly potent natural germination stimulant for Orobanche was isolated from sunflower and identified by high-field 1D (1H and 13C), 2D (1H-1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC)-NMR, GC.FT-IR, and GC.MS as costuslactone, a guaiane type s

Abstract:
Abstract Mitochondria are the site of respiration and numerous other metabolic processes required for plant growth and development. Increased demands for metabolic energy are observed during different stages in the plants life cycle, but are particularly ample during germination and reproductive organ development. These activities are dependent upon the tight regulation of the expression and accumulation of various organellar proteins. Plant mitochondria contain their own genomes (mtDNA), which encode for rRNAs, tRNAs and some mitochondrial proteins. Although all mitochondria have probably evo
