Full textDo we walk quick or quickly? Do we answer rightly or right? And how, in French, do we choose to speak correct or correctement, or to run vitement or vite? This French-language-composed Master’s thesis analyzes the variation between -ly and -ø in the current usage of English adverbs (such as rightly/right) and the variation between -ment and -ø in the current usage of French adverbs (such as correctement/correct) by examining spoken data from personal conversations and reality TV shows, and written data from informal Internet forum discussion threads and from formally written government texts (also found on the Internet), in both languages. The present study (translated title: "Change and Divergence from Standard Language Use: The Case of Suffix Omission in French and English Adverbs") examines corpora composed of more than 2,489,000 words, in addition to personal conversations, TV shows, and hundreds of advanced searches through the Google search engine. Our study focuses on three sociolinguistic variables: age, sex and formality. We also examine semantic aspects of this alternation such as its relation to the semantic fields of perceivable results (movements, spatial positions, sounds, odors) and abstract results or processes (concerning the intellectual, moral or affective realms), among others. We have found that while the adverb without suffix often does relate to perceivable results, there are many examples when both forms – with and without suffix – appear in the same semantic fields. Our results tend to show that the adverb without suffix, which encodes concrete, objective meaning and dates back 650 years or more in English (Tagliamonte and Ito 2002), is more often used in the informal register, in spoken language, among the youth, and when the speaker wishes to appear "cool, " "supportive" or "fun." Finally, we hope to evaluate the implications of our results concerning the current state of the French and English languages (although our results may indicate a change in progress), and in the fields of language teaching, grammar, lexicography, communication, advertising and/or translation.

Full textIn this thesis, all of which is based upon the principles of the theory called the psychomechanics of language, the author gives a definition of the adverb-class by relating it to the other parts of speech and he analyses some of the consequences of that definition at the morpho-semantic level. Besides, he contends that the definition given conditions the syntax of the adverb. The syntactic study is envisaged from a genetic angle, its main criterion being the successive stages during which the sentence constituents appear when an act of enunciation is brought into operation. Full textThis study is an investigation into the distribution in usage of short english morphemes making up the body of prepositions and/or adverbial particles. The author has selected 15 forms among the most versatile, as regards their lexical as well as their syntactic potentiality. They are : at, in, on, off, up, down, by, over, through, across, to, from, out, away and about. This work is conducted in the light of cognitive concepts - among which that of family resemblances. - with a view to bringing out, half-way between predictiveness and convention, some pattern of semantic coherence extending over the whole set of their occurrences. The linguistic analyses feed on the theoretic works of antoine culioli and ronald langacker. Last but not least, the contrastive method is used throughout. All the examples are studied in context, in comparison with their available translation into french. The interlingual perspective has a dual advantage : it throws light on the intralingual workings, while contributing its piece to research in translation. This particular field appears all the more challenging as these "minor parts of english speech" sound eminently idiomatic to the french ear. Definitely cutting across categories, the author's work consists in shadowing each morpheme thanks to conceptual metaphor, from a prototypical prepositional value - a topological asymmetric relation between two elements - over to its temporal and more abstract occurrences, down to some non-referential adverbial values, thus replacing the morpheme into a topology of grammatical space. Through successive shifts along a semantic, lexical and syntactic continuum, the study ends with and opens up onto the issue of the aspectual determination of the verb by the particle, and lays the bases for a parallelism with another class of iconic units, namely affixes. Those points are presented as matter for prospective research

Full textThe starting point of this research is the observation that French speakers writing in English in personal or professional contexts still encounter grammatical difficulties, even at intermediate to advanced levels. The first tools they can reach for to correct those errors, automatic grammar checkers, do not offer corrections for a large number of the errors produced by French-speaking users of English, especially because those tools are rarely designed for L2 users. We propose to identify the difficulties encountered by these speakers through the detection of errors in a representative corpus, and to create a linguistic model of errors and corrections. The model is the result of the thorough linguistic analysis of the phenomena at stake, based on grammatical information available in reference grammars, corpus studies, and the analysis of erroneous segments. The validity of the use of linguistic methods is established through the implementation of detection and correction rules in a functional platform, followed by the evaluation of the results of the application of those rules on L1 and L2 English corpora
