SUMMARY The aim of this paper is to investigate the difference in usage between the bare or zero infinitive and the marked or (for) to infinitive in late Middle English. It has been generally recognised that grammatical function plays an important role here, but it does not explain the variation in infinitive marking when the infinitive functions as a verbal complement. According to most historical linguists of English, the choice of marker here is lexically determined (and therefore syntactically arbitrary), or influenced, in the case of poetry, by metrical considerations.
