Appearance of the refraction effects and Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization of linearly polarized X rays has been analyzed for transmission and reflection at grazing incidence angles for a resonant film with allowance for the X-ray magnetic or Mössbauer scattering. It is shown that, when the magnetization is oriented along the radiation beam direction, magnetic additives to the susceptibility do not affect the phase shifts between the waves reflected from the surface and the substrate; however, they induce “orthogonal polarization” in the reflected beam, which corresponds to rotatio

Rotations of the electric vector position angle (EVPA) in blazars are often close to an integral multiple of 180°. There are many examples of this in the literature, and we strengthen the evidence by showing that, in the RoboPol monitoring program, nπ rotations occur more frequently than otherwise expected by chance. We explain this using a model consisting of two polarized emission components: a “jet” that is constant in time and a “burst” that is variable. The EVPA of the combination is EVPAjet at both the beginning and the end of the burst, so the net rotation across the burst must be nπ. S

AbstractThis paper presents an experimental study on influence of input light polarization on the spectral characteristics of a fibre twist sensor based onTilted Fiber Bragg Grating(TFBG) with simultaneous application of bending to an optical fibre. The application of proposed measurement stand could provide the ability of transforming the bending to a displacement. The twist measurement was performed by tuning of the sensor illuminating light polarization angle. Emission from an accretion disk around compact objects, such as neutron stars and black holes, is expected to be significantly polarized. The polarization can be used to put constraints on the geometrical and physical parameters of the compact sources – their radii, masses, and spins – as well as to determine the orbital parameters. The radiation escaping from the innermost parts of the disk is strongly affected by the gravitational field of the compact object and the relativistic velocities of the matter. Abstract Parity-violating extensions of Maxwell electromagnetism induce a rotation of the linear polarization plane of photons during propagation. This effect, known as cosmic birefringence, impacts on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations producing a mixing of E and B polarization modes which is otherwise null in the standard scenario. Such an effect is naturally parametrized by a rotation angle which can be written as the sum of an isotropic component α 0 and an anisotropic one δα(n̂). In particular, Planck low-resolution observations of dust polarization have demonstrated that Galactic filamentary structures, where star formation takes place, are associated to well organized magnetic fields. A better understanding of this process requires detailed observations of galactic dust polarization on scales of 0.01 to 0.1 pc. Abstract The linear polarization of thermal dust emission provides a powerful tool to probe interstellar and circumstellar magnetic fields, because aspherical grains tend to align themselves with magnetic field lines. While the Radiative Alignment Torque (RAT) mechanism provides a theoretical framework for this phenomenon, some aspects of this alignment mechanism still need to be quantitatively tested. One such aspect is the possibility that the reference alignment direction changes from the magnetic field (“B-RAT”) to the radiation field k-vector (“k-RAT”) in areas of strong radiation fields.
