Full textThis research sets out to test the hypothesis on the disparity between the constitutional status of the languages of the Seychelles (Creole, English and French) and their usage. lt shows the distribution of languages in key institutions in relation to Chaudenson's description of status and corpus (2004). lt examines the relationship between linguistic attitudes and representations and behaviour and analyses strategies related to language management and glottopolitical decisions. This thesis presents an exhaustive documentation on the history of linguistic policies in Seychelles from colonial times to the present. To support our hypothesis, 4 surveys (interviews and questionnaires) were conducted with a sample population of 689 persons comprising high ranking government officiais, teachers and students. Results from these surveys show that the speakers' pratices are not in line with the Constitutional lawwith regards to languages. They illustrate that the Seychelles trilingual context involves a stratified triglossia at different levels whereby each language finds its « slot » in relation to contextual usage, representations and speakers' competence. Finally, this research suggests that Seychelles' trilingualism exists in an harmonious way where a complementarity of language functions is the norm

Full textIn an effort to highlight best practices in the management of wild eastern brook trout, an examination was performed of brook trout management plans and stocking habits for seven randomly selected states within the species native range. Additionally, surveys were distributed to these state’s members of Trout Unlimited (TU) in an effort to understand angler motivations, awareness of and attitudes about their state’s stocking practices and protection of wild brook trout fisheries. The states selected were within the eastern brook trout’s native range and included West Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, Maryland, and North Carolina. While each state differs in its efforts to either restore or protect existing wild brook trout populations, all seven states continue to stock hatchery-raised brook trout to maintain a viable sport fishery. However, regarding stocking dynamics, each state has unique policies regarding where the stocking occurs in relation to how these efforts potentially impacts wild populations. Survey results indicated that, while the majority of TU members expressed a strong understanding of their states stocking practices, they were still strongly interested in gaining additional information, indicating a need for more transparency regarding stocking habits and practices. Furthermore, survey results indicated that a large percentage of TU members still enjoy fishing for popular, nonnative, sport fish such as bass and brown trout. Additionally, support for policies protecting wild brook trout diminished as opportunities for catching larger fish diminished along with the removal of popular, nonnative sport fish. Overall, results indicated a need for fisheries managers to work more closely with cold-water conservation organizations, such as Trout Unlimited, and their members to assist in the crafting of policies that benefit both the sport fishing industry and wild brook trout populations.

Full textSocial affects (or attitudes) expressed by a speaker during a verbal interaction are linked to what the speaker intends to say, and are influenced by the speaker's language culture. Aubergé (2002) postulates a voluntary control of such expressions. Following works on attitudinal expression in French and British English at GIPSA-lab, the current thesis investigates 12 Japanese prosodic attitudes. It describes their realization and their perception by Japanese speakers. The influence of visual information is measured through a multimodal corpus. Critical acoustic information for the attitudes' recognition is gathered thanks to a gating paradigm. For some attitudes, information is spread from the start until the end of the utterances, but some attitudes are recognized immediately, while others are recognized at a critical point at the middle or the end of utterances. Cross•cultural perception of social affects in three languages (Japanese, French and British English) is investigated in order to study cultural cues in social affective expressions. Results show that two attitudes (exclamation of surprise and declaration) are recognized cross culturally, while some others behave like false friends - especially the "kyoshuku" Japanese expressions of politeness. Finally, the language learning effect is measured on French learners of Japanese. Learners gradually increase their performances, but still have problems with the most culturally encoded expressions (i. E. "kyoshuku")
Saverna, Adeline. "Les baladeurs MP3 en classe d'anglais au lycée : représentations et attitudes des apprenants." Thesis, Le Havre, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LEHA0004/document.
Full textThis PhD thesis concerns the learning/teaching of the English language. It consists in an exploratory study of 170 high school students’ beliefs and attitudes as regards the introduction and use of an MP3 player in English classes. Our investigation was based on a systemic approach of the learning context. In order to expose the learners’ attitude, we used questionnaires. Our results highlighted the absence of consensus in the acceptation of the MP3 player in English classes. A frequent use of the MP3 player in the daily life does not involve its appropriation in a school context. The MP3 player is not a real object – it is an artefact that is reconstructed according to the uses. Our study also showed that the learners’ beliefs of the technological object depended on their beliefs of the other elements belonging to the learning context

Full textThe aim of this PhD dissertation is to study the role that Tunisian EFL textbooks play in learners' acquisition of an Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). By means of quantitative and qualitative methods and following Risager's (1991) and Sercu's (2000) models, the study attempts to evaluate four Tunisian EFL textbooks as well as learners' knowledge and attitudes towards the British people and culture in terms of two variables: their level of education (6th and 9th form Basic Education) and their regional belonging (rural and urban areas, respectively Bouzguem and Sfax). The application of Pearson' Correlation Test on pupils' and textbooks' data has shown no significant role of the Tunisian EFL textbooks evaluated in shaping learners' attitudes and knowledge in both areas and levels of education. Pupils tend to be ethnocentric and have little and erroneous knowledge of the British people and culture. Textbooks, fail to present an unreal image of the British culture. Other sources of information about the target culture seem to be more influential in forming pupils' attitudes and informing them about the culture of the foreign language they are learning. Some recommendations are suggested to modify the textbooks evaluated to be more convenient and efficient to teach English for intercultural communication

Full textTaking into consideration previous studies on the language planning in Tunisia, this thesis attempts to describe and analyze its linguistic situation, characterized by a diglossia between classic Arabic and the Tunisian dialect, but also by a French bilingualism, confronted recently by the desire of many Tunisians to replace it with English. In order to investigate the current role of the French language in Tunisian society and to discover whether the process of arabization has weakened its influence, different questionnaires were distributed to various categories of Tunisians and interviews took place with targeted persons. Their attitude towards the French language was studied and their language use was analyzed. This thesis also explores the possibility of replacing French with English. Particular attention was paid to the comparison of both languages in the world today and on the benefits each one can bring to the Tunisian economy. Considering the importance of the opinion of Tunisian people on this matter, questionnaires and interviews were also realized

Full textOur research is about the study of the representations of the French language and its learning by Jordanian students. We tried to discover the images concerning France and French people from a sample of Jordanian students. The purpose of this paper is to explore more the question of the representations of the Jordanian learners in a university bilingual context, little studied from an Arabophone context. We have studied a sample of 68 Jordanian students from the Yarmouk University by means of questionnaire. This study also reveals the representations - stereotypes of both mother and foreign tongues and their places in class of French language as a foreign language. The results of this study show that the students have a very well-balanced about the generally sight of the French language and its apprenticeship. The study also makes evident the existence of relationship between the representations of the target language and the motiv! ation for learning. Moreover; this study shows the importance of understanding the complex nature of the representations of learners towards their mother tongue and the first language learnt in the classroom of French as a Foreign Language

Full textWitt, Melissa Ann. "Anglos' and Latinos' Self-Regulation to Standards for Education and Parenthood." Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/5400.
Full textThe present research tested whether the lower educational achievement and greater incidence of parenthood among Latino relative to Anglo high school students arise from differences across ethnic groups in the standards held for these behaviors and whether these different standards and differential success across groups at meeting them contribute to ethnic group differences in self-esteem. I tested this regulatory model in two different research designs. In the first study, I used longitudinal data on race/ethnicity and attitudes, expectations, and behavioral outcomes for education and parenthood from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health, Udry, 2003). In the second study, I used an experimental design to test the causal mechanisms involved in this regulatory process. I assessed Anglo and Latina adolescent girls' standards in terms of explicit self-report ratings and then prompted them to imagine themselves in scenarios related to education or parenthood. After participants viewed the scenarios, I assessed their self-esteem and affect. In both studies, I anticipated that ethnic group differences in standards for education and parenting would help explain differences in behavioral outcomes for the groups, along with differences in ethnic group affect and self-esteem. These studies provided some evidence that Anglos espouse more favorable attitudes toward education and less favorable attitudes toward adolescent pregnancy than Latinos. As anticipated, adolescents experienced increases in self-esteem and positive affect when they acted in ways that confirmed valued standards.

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of concept image game-based learning on the elementary students’ learning achievement, motivation, and attitudes in learning angle concepts. This quasi-experimental design study was conducted with 3 lessons in one week. The subjects were 81 students from 3 fifth-grade classrooms, who were assigned to one of three groups with different types of instruction: didactic teaching; concept image learning; and concept image game-based learning. The data of learning achievement was analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA); the data of learning motivation was analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA); and the data of attitudes was analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study showed that: (1) the students who received concept image game-based learning obtained greater learning achievement than the other two groups; (2) the group receiving concept image game-based learning also showed higher motivation than the other groups; and (3) most of the students had positive attitudes towards the use of concept image game-based learning.

The theme of this study is based on the "Angles Relating to Circles " unit discussing relationships with radians and angles to 5 angles which are Central Angle, Inscribed Angle, Chord Tangent Angle, Interior Angle of a Circle and Exterior Angle of a Circle in the Math Textbook for the ninth-grade students. In this study, the attitude, perceptions of cognitive load and effort in Math learning from various achievable students between discrete and derivative teaching contexts would be investigated. This experiment was based on a quasi-experimental design and 159 ninth-grade students from 6 average classes in a junior high school in Taoyuan city was adopted as participants. Various teaching contexts and students with different learning achievements were the independent variables while attitude in Math learning, perceptions of cognitive load and scores in post-test as well as delayed post-test were the dependent variables in this test. The investigative result was analyzed through a two-way ANOVA and showed in the following conclusions. 1. About teaching context and learning level, the significant interaction could be found of these 2 independent variables in the motivation of Math learning attitude and the knowledge dimension of post-test. The other dimension of post-test , delayed post-test ,cognitive load and Math learning attitude were failed to be found significant interaction. 2. The main effect about teaching context in the comprehension dimension of post-test as well as the total scores of the post-test, the discrete type group was obviously superior than the derivative type group. 3. The simple main effect about teaching context in the knowledge dimension of post-test of low achievement learner, the discrete type group was obviously superior than the derivative type group. 4. The two teaching contexts revealed no obvious differences in every independent variables of the delayed post-test achievement performance. 5. The main effect about teaching context in the class understanding of the perceptions of cognitive load, the discrete type group was obviously superior than the derivative type group; the main effect of the rest four dimensions were failed to reveal visible differences. 6. The main effect about teaching context in the learning pleasure of the Math learning attitude, the discrete type group was obviously superior than the derivative type group. 7. The simple main effect about teaching context in the learning motivation of the Math learning attitude to the middle and low achievement learners, the discrete type group was obviously superior than the derivative type group; the rest items were failed to reveal visible differences.

The main purpose of the study is to examine the impacts of incorporating interactive white board (IWB) into mathematic instructions upon students’ effects and attitude of study and achievement in mathematic learning. The sample of this study were fifty two third-grade students from two classes at one elementary school of Kaohsiung County. According to their mathematics average grades which are involved midterm and final exam the last half of their third-grade, and the samples were divided into high and low levels. Each group had twelve to fourteen students and went through twelve hours, total three weeks experimental course. Before the course, both two groups took a pre-test of mathematics achievement and mathematics attitude scale. After the course finished, the two groups will took a post-test of mathematics achievement and attitude to explore the students'' learning attitudes towards the interactive white board instruction method. According to the analysis form the experiment, the study reached the following conclusions︰ 1. Using different teaching methods and the difference between high and low level students shows a significant interaction on students’ mathematics performance. 2. Using “IWB” into mathematics teaching method is better than using ordinary teaching aids for low learning achievement students. 3. There was no significant difference for the experimental group, but there was for the control group. 4. There was no significant interaction for students’ mathematics attitude by different teaching methods and learning achievements. 5. The mathematics learning attitude of the experimental group (low level) is much more better than the high level students.
