The input-output displacement relations of two Cardan joints arranged in series on a driveline has been investigated in detail, including the effects of unequal joint angles, the phase angle between the two Cardan joints and also such manufacturing tolerance errors as nonright angle moving link lengths and offset joint axes. A combined Newton-Raphson method and Davidon-Fletcher-Powell optimization algorithm using dual-number coordinate-transformation matrices was employed to perform the analysis. An experiment was conducted to validate the results of the analysis. The apparatus consisted of a

The concepts of kinetic energy and complementary kinetic energy permit to distinguish between two different formulations of what happens to be the same quantity in Newtonian mechanics. These formulations turn out to play a significant role in gyrodynamics in that they can be used very effectively to establish fundamental equations. It is relatively straightforward to establish a complementary kinetic energy expression. The establishment of the kinetic energy expression is, in spite of its unambiguous definition, more complicated, and a way is presented how to obtain it without too much difficu

Cardan/Euler angles represent the most common technique for the quantification of segmental rotations. Cardan angles are influenced by their ordered sequence, and sensitive to planar-cross talk from the dominant rotation plane, which may affect the angular parameters. The International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) currently recommends a sagittal, coronal, and then transverse (XYZ) ordered sequence, although it has been proposed that when quantifying non-sagittal rotations this may not be the most appropriate technique. Our new equation becomes identical with the Carman equation for perfectly wettability. Our experimental results are in good agreement with these theoretical results.

Abstract:
The existing literature on the flow of fluids through porous packed beds gives very limited quantitative information on the criteria employed in marking the applicability of the different flow regimes. It is the objective of this paper to provide experimental evidence for determining the demarcation criteria during the flow of water through a bed of randomly packed spherical beads. Two different sizes of glass beads, 3 mm and 6 mm, were employed as the porous matrix through which water flowed at rates varying from 5.07 × 10−6 m3/s to 4920 × 10−6 m3/s. The joint coordinate system convention proposed by Grood and Suntay has been widely adopted, but often misrepresented. Previous work has argued by logical explanation of the approach that the joint coordinate system is a set of Euler or Cardan angles. The current work offers both an explanation and mathematical proof that the joint coordinate system convention is equivalent to a Cardan angle sequence, thereby demonstrating the joint coordinate system angles are both sequence dependent and orthogonal.

The Thompson coupling is a relatively recent design of constant-velocity coupling, that is, principally based on the double Cardan mechanism. An extra mechanism comprising a spherical pantograph serves to align the intermediate shaft of this coupling and so maintains the constant velocity of the double Cardan mechanism, in a modular fashion. This technical note serves to introduce basic closed form expressions for the coupling’s geometry—which may then be used to derive linkage accelerations and dynamic forces. The expressions are derived using standard identities in spherical geometry. The re

Abstract:
In this study, a compliant version of the Cardan universal joint is introduced. The original design consists of two identical parts assembled at right angle with respect to each other. The single piece part can be produced from planar materials; thus, it has the advantage of easiness in manufacturing. Dimensions of the mechanism are devised in order to satisfy the Cardan joint theory and to avoid an undesired contact between the identical parts. As a design example, a mechanism is dimensioned. The resultant stresses at flexural hinges of this sample are determined via finite element analysis m

Abstract We describe the basic cohomology ring of the canonical holomorphic foliation on a moment-angle manifold, LVMB-manifold, or any complex manifold with a maximal holomorphic torus action. Namely, we show that the basic cohomology has a description similar to the cohomology ring of a complete simplicial toric variety due to Danilov and Jurkiewicz. This settles a question of Battaglia and Zaffran, who previously computed the basic Betti numbers for the canonical holomorphic foliation in the case of a shellable fan. Our proof uses an Eilenberg–Moore spectral sequence argument; the key ingre

ABSTRACTA parabolic rate kinetics model has been developed and verified by experiments for the pressure infiltration of textile ceramic matrix composites using sol-gel processing with added solid particles. Darcy's law and a global permeability of the whole system were adopted in the model. The permeability of the whole system consisting of fiber preform, compaction, and filter was derived from the individual permeabilities of the fiber preform and particle compaction inside the preform which were based on the Kozeny-Carman equation. Experiments were conducted using 3-D angle interlock woven c
