Abstract:

This study addresses the impact of a definition paradigm shift on the use of anglicisms in the French-speaking written press. Built around a diachronic analysis (2000-2015) of the numerous differences linked to a change of definition, it also ventures into the impact such a change may have on comparative analysis focusing on geographical origin (France vs Quebec) or the nature of the newspaper (“of record” vs “popular”). It aims at contributing to the literature though two different aspects:(1) This study is the only conceptual work to highlight what sort of impact a change in the definition of “English borrowing” can have on the frequency of anglicism usage. It shows through an opposition with/without French equivalents, that an analysis focused only on anglicisms for which French provides an equivalent – those Forest and Boudreau (1998) consider “unnecessary” or “erroneous” (Villers, 2009) – reveals an important drop in the usage frequency compared to an analysis based on all anglicisms. It also unveils that, out of three anglicisms extracted from my corpus, two have no equivalents in French and are de facto unavoidable.(2) This research is, to my knowledge, one of the first in comparative study to show, with empirical evidence, how definition affects not only usage frequency, but also dictates the way newspapers develop over time depending on different criterion. Based on two different angles of comparison (geographical origin and nature of the journal), I also show that a change in the definition leads to different evolution trajectories, different relationships between our newspapers and different diachronic variations. To answer my research questions, I built one of the largest corpora ever used for a study on anglicisms. With more than 330 million words, it gathers all the articles published by four different newspapers for the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015: Le Monde and Le Parisien for France, and Le Devoir and La Presse for Quebec. I also used two lists of keywords composed of 5416 and 2934 anglicisms taken from two general dictionaries (Le Petit Robert 2016 and Le Multidictionnaire de la langue française–4th edition 2013) and two specialized dictionaries (Höfler’s Dictionnaire des anglicismes–1982 and Le Colpron, dictionnaire des anglicismes–4th edition). By going far beyond what previous studies have done, it offers a more advanced overview than usual.First, my results show that the usage frequency is generally low (0.72% for all anglicisms; 0.28% for anglicisms with equivalents only; 0.44% for anglicisms without equivalents only) both in France and Quebec, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies. However, I find clear differences in terms of results for each analysis, as the frequency rate for anglicisms with equivalents is 1.5 times lower than the frequency rate for anglicisms without equivalent. This proves that the definition of the very concept of “anglicism” directly influences the frequency of usage. Second, I observe that this change of definition also affects comparative analysis focused on specific criteria such as the geographical origin or the nature of the newspapers. My study thus reveals great nuances in terms of trend over 15 years according to which definition is used: for instance, results for Quebec newspapers are slowly decreasing over time when anglicisms with equivalents are concerned, – especially for Le Devoir, whereas they increase when anglicisms do not have an equivalent. When it comes to the nature of the newspaper, Le Parisien, which is the newspaper that uses the most anglicisms of the four, forms a much more heterogeneous duo with La Presse when only anglicisms with equivalents are taken into account. They also give prominence to Le Devoir and Le Monde whose evolution trends are close to identical when the broader definition of Anglicism is used but a bit more asymmetric when equivalents come into play

Abstract:
Most technical terms in the field of Computer Science are Englishloanwords. English words are frequently preferred to Spanish terms because of different reasons, for instance, because of linguistic economy. Inthis paper, we reveal the results of an empirical study about the frequencyof use of pure anglicisms. It has been carried out among students ofTranslating and Interpreting at the University of Las Palmas de GranCanaria (Spain). The scope of use of lexical anglicisms by individuals in theanalysed sample seems to be relatively high, but slightly lower than thatof Computer Science students who participated in another preliminarypartial study. Those students who provided more words for definitionsalso suggested more synonyms for the terms, and also used more Englishterms.

Desnica, Mirta. Thesis, Paris Est, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PESC0016.

Full text
Abstract:
Now days, French women’s magazines offer examples of language units in English that form or can form a complete utterance (eg. Girl power!, What else?, All they need is love, etc.). We propose to refer to them as “vogue utterances” and consider them as a manifestation of codeswitching. As this phenomenon has received little interest among linguists who deal with Anglicisms in French, since the focus has been put on loanwords or on codeswitching in oral interaction. Our aim is to describe the forms, the meaning and the context of use of English utterances in contemporary French women’s press and to characterize the writing style they are part of from a linguistic and a socio-cultural point of view. Within the theoretical framework of the French discourse analysis, we combine different approaches: syntax, phraseology, enunciative linguistics and pragmatics, text linguistics, studies of intertextuality, semiotics of discourse genres and semiotics of cultures, in order to describe different aspects of these utterances, which are remarkable for their salience and the relation they create between the participants in the communication process

Diatta, Mady Edouard.

Full text
Abstract:
Aware of borrowings (process and result), we notice that it often aims at restoring a balance between two languages (a kind of linguistic osmosis), when one of them is richer in a given field. Aware that it fills a lexical gap or brings additional prestige when it comes to appointing a specific referent, we wish to focus on a promising area (popular and highly mediatized): sport. Our initial researches reveal that this area has only been partially studied and is beginning to be dated. Therefore, this will involve carrying out a study on lexical borrowings in the current Spanish language used in sport. We wish to highlight the significant role of anglicism and gallicism in the Spanish language today. We would like to focus on sports vocabulary. We intend to highlight the extent phenomenon and draw up a sort of accurate analysis. Gallicism and anglicism have long been attested in Spanish, but the exclusive domain of sport has never benefited from a comprehensive study. However, it seems propitious to the integration of exogenous terms. Hapax, speech production or neologisms with a long term ending up integrating the general language, these borrowings of one day or always will be the subject of a formal study (evolution of graphic and phonological significant, morphology with in particular a gender fluctuation), semantics (restriction, extension or use of original sense) and thematics (source of the borrowings). It will be a question of inventorying the phenomenon to be observed in a determined corpus (the generalist daily sports newspaper Marca in its paper and digital version for two years 2015-2016). Marca is the Spanish most important sport press in terms of prints. The terms listed can then be analysed in greater detail (the first appearance, the reasons of the borrowings, the adaptations of the significant and the signified, assimilation by descriptive, normative lexicography, the study of frequency [ Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual de la Real Academia]. The specific areas will allow us to identify huge influences of both languages English and French in some sports that we will try to explain (the beginning of each sport, its popularity, its entry channel in Spain). Furthermore, we will try to compare the presence of such anglicisms and gallicisms in other languages such as English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, in order to determine whether these borrowings are in the process of becoming internationalisms. We can even, in the light of some researches of the past and current trends, try to highlight the sports (emergent sports or which are being popularised) that will provide the borrowings of tomorrow

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is part of research on linguistic borrowing in general and anglicisms in particular. Using a corpus of extracts from an economic magazine, we analyzed the integration of anglicisms into German language. We identified two phases of integration. First, there is a neological integration phase, during which the writer is aware of the foreign character of the term used: therefore, he marks it in different ways. This phase can be longer for technical terms: in this case the foreign character of the code is reinforced by the foreign character of the reference, therefore the English origin of the word is not that important. We analyzed these neology marks in speech and built a typology of them. Secondly, we started from the observation that once the integration in speech is completed, anglicisms will lead their own semantic life in German language, which can have more or less impact on German vocabulary

The goal of this dissertation is to verify the usage, and, mainly, to analyze the frequency of anglicisms in current Portuguese, aiming to investigate the existence of adaptation process of the foreign word and check the development of this process for the resolution of writing. The corpus of this research is the one availabel in the Lexicography Laboratory at Faculdade de Ciências e Letras - São Paulo State University - Araraquara (UNESP), that contains more than 200 millions of occurrences, in diversified kinds of texts. The analysis is made by observing he occurrences found in the corpus which are organized in a table divided in before and after 1950, and the results are evaluated basing on the available theory about foreign words (Boulanger, 1979; Deroy, 1956; Alves, 1996; Carvalho, 1989; Sandmann, 1989; and others). The accomplishment of the quantitative analysis of the anglicisms found during the search process showed that the majority of them occurs only in their original graphic form, that is, there ins't an adapter form for them. Among the anglicisms that have an adapted form, the conclusion is that the adapted item is more used than the original one. After the investigation of the speaker's choice between original and adapted graphic form on the corpus in which the research was based an attempt was finally made in order to systematize the processes of spelling adaptation of 114 anglicisms that present accommodation in writing form.

Abstract:

This dissertation approaches the use of foreignisms in the supplements Economia (Economics) of the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo (The State of São Paulo) and Dinheiro (Money) of the newspaper Folha de São Paulo (São Paulo s Newspaper) for a period of three months, from May to July, 2006. As from the criticism made to the insertion of foreignisms into Brazil s Portuguese language, specially by the Bill 1676/99 of congressman Aldo Rebelo, which Disposes on the promotion, protection, defense and usage of the Portuguese language , this study aimed at showing how the foreignisms constitute themselves as a source of accretion to the changeable nature of a language. In order to achieve that, we based our work on specialists who have been dealing with foreignisms, such as: Carlos Alberto Faraco (2004), Nelly Carvalho (1987), José Luiz Fiorin (2004), Ana Maria S. Zilles (2004), Ieda Maria Alves (2004), Maria Tereza C. Biderman (2001) and on several discourses: debates in the press about the use of foreign words and expressions, laws, bills and decrees. In order to enlighten the use of foreignisms, we made use of a quantitative approach in which we showed their frequency and behavior in the corpus. The results made evident that it is possible to have the wide presence of foreignisms living together with a text which has the Brazilian Portuguese language as its basis. Such study allowed us to consider that the use of foreignisms in the economy area of the journalistic discourse does not represent a linguistic threaten, but constitutes a lexical variant in Brazil s Portuguese language.

Abstract:
The present work is designed to identify and assess the integration of Anglicisms occurring in Ibero-American languages by means of print newspapers and their respective online versions. In the first part of the dissertation, we expound theoretical considerations, identifying influences of the excessive, ongoing presence of Anglicisms in Latin-American societies. So as to prepare the research, we examined print and online editions of the following newspapers: Folha de S. Paulo (Brazil), El Mercurio (Chile) and Clarín (Argentina). Words from the English language were researched in the texts of the selected newspapers, excluding proper nouns, names of persons or places, titles of books, films, music and entertainments. Considering lexical absorption as a natural process in language, this dissertation aims to deepen the understanding on how the lexical trajectory between the North-American English language and the languages spoken in South America is processed. As a result, we established that Anglicism incorporation to the vernacular occurs, in most cases, when the borrowing language lacks an equivalent word, and sometimes for other reasons, such as fad, status expression or professional jargon. However, this replacement contributes to these linguistic systems, since language is a changing communication tool, always following and expressing the trends of peoples.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which English is used to produce and reproduce new meanings and identities in the Japanese context. The study of language contact with English in Japan is far from new in Japanese sociolinguistics, and a number of studies have been conducted in this area. However, I argue that previous studies are marked by two main oversights: firstly, previous studies were conducted on data collected from limited genres; secondly, in the previous studies, English was examined on the basis of a restricted contact setting. Thus, the earlier studies provided a limited view of the ways in which the use of English functions in the Japanese context, overlooking the variety of the ways in which new meanings and identities are created. This study provides a more comprehensive picture of the ways in which the use of English functions performatively within the Japanese setting. It does this by conducting three case studies on data collected from three largely overlooked genres of Japanese popular culture, namely Japanese rap, manga, and a Japanese online Bulletin Board System website (BBS). Drawing on the theoretical framework based on the concepts of globalisation and performativity (Pennycook, 2007), this study focuses on the dynamic process by which English is embedded and re-embedded in local contexts within Japanese popular culture. Accordingly, it highlights the ways in which the use of English performatively creates and recreates new meanings and identities. This thesis argues that the process in which English is embedded is multidimensional within the Japanese context, and that this process corresponds to the ways in which English is performative in constructing multidimensional identities. Furthermore, viewing the use of language as a 'transmodal performance' (Pennycook, 2007), this study examines how the use of English works performatively in parallel with other modes of performative act, such as singing and drawing pictures.

This dissertation studies the use of anglicisms (English loanwords used in texts written in Portuguese) in the discursive field of Business Administration. This research is focuses on the fact that some English terms have translations that are well accepted by Brazilian speakers, and others are simply used in their native forms. The choice of subject was motivated by the author's experience as an MBA student. In this context, both in classroom interactions with professors and peers, as well as in the literature of the area, it was found that there is great influence of American culture on current management practices and hence the English language. In addition, in the literature concerning the theme of this dissertation, we have found journal articles, dissertations and doctoral theses in the field of linguistics, which contemplated the discursive fields of journalism, computer science and economics, among others, but there was a gap in regard to Business Administration. The theoretical framework that supports this work is based on the cognitive view of language. It approaches language a symbolic system that underpins human interactions and considers it a complex adaptive system. In this research, we present reflections on the use of ten anglicisms in the context of management. The analysis, in general, endorses the theory that these words were used in Portuguese to meet interactional communicative needs of its speakers. From the perspective of language as a complex adaptive system, we realize that the attractors economy and meaning serve as motivators to use all studied items. As a result of these attractors, there are benefits in text ergonomics, since the anglicisms make communication more fluid and reader-friendly, once they make excessive explanations and text elements as references or footnotes unnecessary. Another remarkable point of these reflections was the observation of the fact that, in this area, most of the time, the anglicisms play the role of nouns, and often refer to management processes. Thus, the image schema of CONTAINER proved to be very productive in several cases. This study found linguistic legitimacy not only for the use of anglicisms, but loanwords from any other language, not just in the field of Busines Administration, but in the Portuguese language as a whole. Although there are, at times, cultural and ideological reasons for the choice of words, this work brought as a contribution the realization that, in actual use of the language, speakers seeks, above other things, to ensure the informativeness of statements, and for that reason, they resort to loanwords when necessary.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines attitudes towards anglicisms in Russian expressed in print media articles. Accelerated linguistic borrowing from English, a particularly visible aspect of the momentous language changes after the breakdown of the Soviet Union, has engendered a range of reactions. Print media articles spanning two decades and several central outlets are analysed to show how arguments for or against use of anglicisms are constructed, what language ideologies these arguments serve, and whether mediated language attitudes changed during the post-Soviet era. A summary of the history of Russian linguistic borrowing and language attitudes from the Middle Ages to the present day shows that periods of national consolidation provoked demands for the restriction of borrowing. Then, a survey of theories on language ideologies demonstrates that they function through the construction of commonsense argumentation in metadiscourse (talk about talk). This argumentation draws on accepted common knowledge in the Russian linguistic culture. Using critical discourse analytic tools, namely analysis of metaphor scenarios and of argumentation, I examine argumentative strategies in the mediated language debates. Particularly, the critical analysis reveals what strategies render dominant standpoints on anglicisms self-evident and logical to the audience. The results show that the media reaction to anglicisms dramatises language change in discourses of threat, justified by assumed commonsense rational knowledge. Whilst there are few reactions in the 1990s, debates on language intensified in the 2000s after Putin’s policies of state reinforcement came into effect, peaking around times of official language policy measures. Anglicisms and their users are subordinated, cast out as the Other, not belonging to the in-group of sensible speakers. This threat is defused via ridicule and claiming of the moral high ground. This commonsense argumentation ultimately supports notions of Russian as a static, sacred component of Russian nation building, and of speakers as passive. Close textual analysis shows that even articles claiming to support language change and the use of anglicisms use argumentation strategies of negativisation. Overall, a consensus on the character and role of the Russian language exists between all perspectives, emphasising the importance of rules and assigning speakers a passive role throughout.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This essay deals with translation issues, mainly in regard to text function and text norms, which arose during the transfer of a German source text, situated within the field of tourism, into a Swedish target text. Special attention was paid to anglicisms, a typical feature of German marketing language and also a key stylistic feature of the source text at hand. A challenge to translators in general is which textual and cultural considerations, besides considerations of language, should be taken into account in the translation process. In translation literature semantics and pragmatics have received considerable attention. The analysis in this particular essay was based on the skopos theory and Reiss’ translation-oriented text typology. The analysis showed that the source text has an operative function, meaning that it is aimed at influencing the reader in a specific direction, but at the same time fulfills an informative function. Both these functions must be reflected in the translation. The comparison of text norms of tourist texts showed that the use of anglicisms is less common in Swedish tourist texts than in German tourist texts, and therefore many of the anglicisms in the source text were exchanged for equivalent Swedish expressions in the target text. When an equivalent anglicism was not available, the denotation was expressed in accordance with the function of that particular linguistic element, which means that in some cases semantic equivalence was attained and in some cases priority was given to text-normative and pragmatic equivalence.

This research aims to investigate the reasons for the deliberate use of Anglicisms in Brazilian contemporary business discourse, especially if they don´t help to understand the idea to be communicated. Literature on the crossing of languages and on both ancient and modern linguas francas is examined in this work in order to understand the way languages influence each other. Main historical and modern influences on Portuguese language are also studied, with special attention to English interaction process. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), as proposed by N. Fairclough, is the methodology chosen for the investigation of the business discourse in this work. Formative influences of CDA are studied through a literature review on the many approaches of discourse analysis in both Anglo Saxon and French lines. Management and business magazines available in newsstands, Internet business sites and business e-mail messages form the corpus of this research. As a result of the work, it is possible to establish four categories of underlying reasons for the deliberate and seemingly unnecessary use of Anglicisms in Brazilian contemporary business discourse: euphemization, belonging, valorization and commodification.Euphemization is the word chosen to express the way enterprises hide or dissimulate initiatives that can be consideredharmful or inadequate in their discursive manifestation. Belonging refers to the sense of acceptance as a member of the contemporary(post-Fordist)business discourse group in opposition to the classic(Fordist)business discourse group. The word Valorizationis used to express the way oldjobs and work practices and methodologies have had their names and titles changed in order to make them sound more attractive. Commodificationis the process whereby social goods that ought not to be treated as commodities, like education and health, have been transformed into objects of tradewhiletheir discursive domainhas been colonized by the advertising discourse

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate the pronunciation of certain lexical borrowings in Brazilian Portuguese and the way in which eight Brazilian students of English as a foreign language from Belo Horizonte manage to re(learn) the very same words in English. A study has therefore been carried out selecting lexical borrowings based on their current use in Brazilian Portuguese, acceptance as dictionary entries, acceptance by the Vocabulário Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa and token frequency. The words were then read aloud by participants from different schools, gender and proficiency level. The phonetic transcriptions of such words, after being acoustically verified, produced data that were subsequently statistically analysed, taking into consideration the research variables. Making use of the theory of Language Transfer (ODLIN, 1989), multirepresentational models Exemplars Model (JOHNSON; MULLENIX, 1997; PIERREHUMBERT, 2001, 2003) and Usage-Based Phonology (BYBEE, 2000, 2001) it has been found out that the pronunciation of such words occurs gradually and wordspecifically, differently from the process-like and predictable way it had first been expected to be. If on the one hand the data obtained have shown that gender was not a relevant factor for the pronunciation of such words, on the other hand it has suggested that proficiency level and the place where the participants study English do play an important role in the way the loanwords are managed. Besides that, the token frequency of the words as neologisms in Brazilian Portuguese does not seem to be influential in their pronunciation in English.

Abstract:
This dissertation is an analysis of the phenomenon of loanwords, especially from English, and of its consequences on simultaneous interpreting. The aim is to try to establish a relationship between simultaneous interpreting, a technique with distinctive characteristics, and the problems caused by the use of English loanwords in interpreted speeches from Spanish into Italian. After briefly retracing the history of interpretation, we focus on simultaneous interpreting and its particularities, analysing in depth all the cognitive processes and efforts involved, the strategies used by interpreters and the mistakes than can be made. The indisputably relevant concept of quality in interpreting is also examined. Moreover, we try to present all the mechanisms of neology, the fundamental process of coining new words in every language, then focusing on loanwords, especially from English. It is undeniable that every language has its own history of language policies and a specific attitude of acceptance or rejection of foreign words, for this reason we analysed the different approaches of the Italian language and other romance languages such as French, Spanish and Portuguese. We highlight, in particular, the divergence between Spanish and Italian points of view, drawing attention to the necessity of finding a compromise between purist positions and excessive passiveness. Jargons, chiefly the financial and economic one, are analysed. We underline the special features of these particular types of language as in them we can find a significant amount of English loanwords, both in Italy and in Spain. In the last chapter, the applied part of this dissertation, we focus on the study of twelve interpreted texts of a speech on a financial subject, interpreted by students in their final year of the Interpreting Master’s Degree (SSLMIT Forlì) with the aim of identifying the impact English loanwords can have on interpreting and how interpreters manage this potentially treacherous phenomenon.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the problem of lexical borrowing from English into French. More precisely, we analyse the way English loanwords function in Quebec French (QF), after having assumed that a better understanding of this functionning can provide an explanation as to the vitality of these anglicisms in QF, as well as help to grasp the relation between these anglicisms and Quebec identity, and shed some more light on the causes of the loanword phenomenon. Our corpus has been extracted from the Croc humor magazine, rich in English loanwords and revealing, as it appeared to us, in terms of Quebec identity. Thirty issues of this magazine were looked through in order to establish our database of lexical anglicisms. The fifteen most frequent words of this list (bingo, cheap, chum, coke, fun, gang, hamburger, hot dog, job, joke, party, pinotte, pot smatte, waiter/waitress) were then analyzed according to two aspects. First, to describe denotations, we partly applied models supplied by the Explanatory and Combinatorial Lexicology Framework developped by Mel’čuk, Clas and Polguère (1995). Then, to identify the connotations of anglicisms in the texts of Croc, we used an adaptation of the classification of connotative facts established by Kerbrat-Orecchioni in The Connotation (1977). Our analysis of lexical anglicisms in QF led to two main conclusions. First, the study of denotations has revealed their polysemy, i.e. “ semantic productivity ”, which proves their vitality in the linguistic, limited, sense of the word. The study of connotations seems to help to explain their vitality in the broad sense of the word, i.e. “ dynamism, energy, spontaneity ”. The “ slippery ” essence of connotations – diverse, playful, related to a given space and time and to a certain “ worldview ” – has indeed confirmed their vital texture and revealed their close relation to a specific (namely Quebec) identity. Our thesis tries to show that codification of connotations, however difficult, is possible to some extent.

Abstract:
Currently there are a large number of brands that choose to include anglicisms in their digital communication in their quest to create symbolic value for their products, in addition to reflecting an original lifestyle. This is due to the multiple benefits that the use of anglicisms presents, such as prestige, American dominance, flexibility, international trade, among others. This research work seeks to obtain a better understanding of the Peruvian millennial public regarding the attitudes that anglicisms on Facebook generate in them. Taking the case of the independent fashion market and, specifically, the Papa con Camote brand, as it is one of the most popular independent unisex fashion brands in the country. Previously, research has been conducted on the consumption of fashion brands in this generation. However, one of this type has not been carried out in Peru, nor has it focused on the independent fashion segment. Likewise, the reason for the choice of millennials lies in the contemporaneity between the boom in the use of Anglicisms and their progressive incorporation into the language with the development of this generation. Regarding the methodology used, the paradigm will be naturalistic with a qualitative approach, since the objective of this research is to obtain subjective and personal information from the public; furthermore, it will be inductive in nature. The sampling to be carried out will be theoretical and the work will be a single instrumental case study. On the other hand, the techniques that will be used will be interviews with experts in different areas related to the subject and focus groups with samples of the target audience that must be consumers of independent fashion brands and follow their social networks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aimed at a thorough analysis of examples of slogans both in English and in German, in order to verify if, in this specific context, the presence of English is, indeed, excessive, as many German speakers seem to think, or, on the contrary, if it focuses on specific areas, as recent studies seem to suggest. Bearing in mind the theoretical framework that characterises the phenomena of language contact and loanwords, the study tried to identify the different levels of grammatical integration of the selected anglicisms in the several subsystems of the German language, such as graphematics, phonetics and phonology, morphology and word formation, lexicon and semantics and some stylistic aspects. Overall, it was possible to conclude that the majority of the selected anglicisms is undergoing adaptations to the German rules. It is also relevant to emphasise that the presence of the English language occurs mainly in specific sectors, and not in all areas. Finally, suggestions for future research are put forward, namely the expansion of contrastive studies using Portuguese and German, as well as the need to reflect upon and possibly reorganise the terminology in which the different types of loanwords are based on.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the phonology of non-anglicized French loanwords, i.e. those which do not follow all English rules and retain French characteristics. The first part describes the methodology used for the selection of the corpus, which brings about discussions on loanword terminology, and presents the database that will be used in the analysis of these loanwords. The second part is dedicated to the deletion of the anglicized variants remaining in the database, which brings about many discussions on English phonology. Finally, the last part presents the analysis of the final database, containing only non-anglicized variants. Starting with the idea that these loanwords imitate the French pronunciation, we show how French phonemes are adapted into English, and how English speakers indicate the French origin of a word

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research is a contribution to the study of Anglicisms in the language of sports and our work aims at studying the way in which they are integrated into the French language. Our goal was to observe and describe integration according to two distinct levels : the linguistic level and the sociolinguistic level. A diachronic study of the corpus has permitted to define by which ways and by which linguistic devices an English item is incorporated linguistically into the French language; a synchronic study conducted by means of a sociolinguistic survey has allowed us to check the degree of knowledge, the perception and the use of Anglicisms among French speakers in France. The corpus is made up of 220 lexes extracted from the newspaper L’Équipe mainly during the 2004 Athens Olympics Games. The integration of Anglicisms in the domain of sports in the French language is not unique nor singular; by analysing a similar corpus taken from Spanish newspapers, we have shown that there exist similarities in grammatical and morphological integration into the Spanish language. From a synchronic and sociolinguistic point of view, the French corpus has been submitted to 250 respondents spread over France and corresponding to different social variables. This survey has permitted to obtain partial conclusions about the degree of knowledge, perception and use of Anglicisms in the domain of sports; these results can be used as an indicator for future research about the state and the status of Anglicisms in this domain

Abstract:

The contemporary brasilian-portuguese lexicon is always amplified by lexical units that come from other languages, mostly from English, which are called anglicisms. Thus, it is relevant to verify if the electronical version of Aurélio 3.0 (1999) and Houaiss 1.0 (2001), that present large circulation in Brazil, maintain any criterions to elect these units and if these criterions are common to both dictionaries. The main features that emerge by the comparison of both dictionaries are: the difference in the orthography of the lexical units, the similarity in the definition, varying the best definition between the two dictionaries, and the lack of identity in the definition. Moreover, it was certified that the units were often defined by synonymy and remission. Because of the comparison of the English units, in both dictionaries, it was necessary to study the context in which each term occur, in order to elucidate the divergences. Laboratório de Lexicografia da Faculdade de Ciências e Letras - Campus Araraquara database, provided, in some cases, a manner to attest the best definition of an unit and to estipulate its more used orthography. However, some problems could also be found in this work, such as lexical units that could not be explained by any of the entries of the dictionaries referred to. In conclusion, it can be said that there is not an uniform lexicographical procedure that conduct the insertion of English lexical units in the Aurélio 3.0 (1999) and Houaiss 1.0 (2001) dictionaries, as well as there is not yet a theory that supports this kind of lexicographical insertion.
