This paper describes a logistic study about an underground gold mine, belonging to AngloGold Ashanti, where four different layout options could be applied to the tunnels, and also different transportation strategies. Each evaluated layout had its own configuration for shaft and truck fleets. The study was made individually for each year of the mine operation life, determining the necessary transportation capacity to achieve the planned production for that year. Due to the very restrictive traffic options in the tunnels, a framework was developed to represent the tunnels and traffic rules in a

Gold exploration in the laterite terrains of the Siguiri basin (Guinea-West Africa) is discussed in this thesis. It seeks to propose and develop effective and reliable geochemical exploration techniques applied in such laterite terrains. The study is also intended to investigate and provide some geological clues as to why, in some target areas, the reconnaissance test drilling across the geochemical anomalies couldn’t intersect economic gold mineralisation. Targets were generated based on soil geochemical results, some of which were drilled without delivering economic discoveries even on areas

Integrating social and environmental sustainability into the operations of a multinational mining company is increasingly important to its long term viability. Yet, the boundaries of what constitutes responsible social and environmental sustainability practices are contested with stakeholder governance expectations continuing to evolve, grow, and at times conflict. AngloGold Ashanti needs to navigate the complex terrain between its commitment to maximise returns delivered to shareholders, juxtaposed with those of respecting the environment, and communities being better off for the company havi

The particular focus of this treatise is the social division that a new mining project can generate between the operating company and the community living on or near to the mine site. The underground mine at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine in Ghana currently transports about 175,000 tpm from four shafts to the mill. Two major shafts, Kwesi Mensah Shaft (KMS) and Kwesi Renner Shaft (KRS) handle about 85-90% of this total tonnage. Transfer of ore from all the shafts to the mill is largely by means of contractor trucks. The mill is approximately 2.8 km and 1.5 km by road from KMS and KRS shafts respectively. Earlier plans to introduce a surface conveyor to the mill were found not to be economically viable largely due to the lower production level prevailing at that time. T

The aim of this study is to explore and critique recent claims of a move towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives by multinational mining corporations (MNMCs). Today, MNMCs are expected to promote and practice CSR for the socio-economic consequences of their activities in host countries. Mining has a long history as far as the existence of humans are concerned. Mining contributes to economic growth and can be a source of employment for many. Mining has been a source of revenue to most developing countries that are endowed with mineral and natural resources. These revenues come in the form of taxes, government shares, royalties, commitment to corporate social responsibility and foreign exchange earnings as a result of the exportation of minerals. When these benefits are managed carefully, economies can be transformed. Due to the immense benefits mining has on the economy and so
