They have achieved significant succes in strengthening their economies but the challenge remains in the social field. Paradoxically, the high growth rate doesn't provide for a solution to the high level of poverty. The question is : To what extent has the collective strategy fostered human progress ? As Small island Developing states, how can they face the complexity of cultural and economic globalization ? If a level of social well-being can be locally noticed, owing to a significant diasporic contribution, cultural and institutional resources, the six independent states have also established a Central Bank with a single currency which has enjoyed unparalleled stability. In addition to inter-island cooperation is the coordination of performances in the use of United-Nations frameworks and assistance from the donor community. These countries are facing the new context of liberalization with great concern about the their own community environmental interests

Full textThis thesis aims to show that science fiction films are not only entertaining but that they are also thought-provoking. The benefit of hindsight enables us to appreciate contemporary english speaking societies through the glimpses shown by the science fiction films of the eighties. When we take a second look at them, we realise that they reflect our questioning about our daily life. They depict a world controlled by economic and political groups, and jeopardised by the military. However, science fiction films also deal with deeper worries such as our ideals, our hopes and our fears. Thus they clearly show the opposition between what we would like to be and what we are, and help us to understand better the roles of religion and science. Moreover, the films studied also reflect our behaviour towards our environment, and what it reveals about ourselves, and towards others. They also mirror the changes which have occurred in personal relationships, but also show that women's role in society has not really evolved. Science fiction films of the eighties tell us, somehow, that what makes human beings different from other living beings is also what makes us face our more painful reality, death, and our inability to accept it. We must not forget that science fiction films are an entertainment enabling us to dream and enjoy ourselves. However, science fiction films also ask us which life we would like to lead; they may evoke a dehumanized future, but they set us free to act and turn these pessimistic prospects into better ones

Full textThis thesis is about radville, a small canadian town located in the south of saskatchewan province. Radville and its area is called "middle of nowhere" by its inhabitants, because of its isolated situation and the unlimited space all around. The town was founded in 1910 by immigrants coming from different european countries who did'nt have any common cultural past, but they were thrown in the same way into a new life - bigger area, flatter,emptier, colder in winter - and created radville out of nothing. They could buy land very cheaply, and they cultivated wheat on their newly owned land. This creating of a town was the opportunity for the meeting up of different european cultures with another one already established in canada - anglo-saxon. The result was an acculturation as well as specific resistances to each cultural groups. Radville has got a multicultural atmosphere, due to the cultural, social, religious progression of individual, and also the collective life of radvillites, and this despite the different origins of the present day inhabitants. Radville forms a family type community, with its frictions, its divisions, but with its intrinsic family, social and hierarchic ties, all of which are indissociable

The questions addressed in the first part of the thesis are as follows : 1) what is the capacity of the human ear? 2) what is the real target of auditory perception? 3) what is the correlation between linguistic units and those of perception? 4) how do listeners compensate for the wide phonetic variability of utterances? 5) what role do attention, memory and motivation play in speech perception? 6) how do different knowledge sources interact in speech perception? the questions addressed in the second part are as follows : 1) in what respects is english a foreign language? 2) what do speakers of french have to say about the comprehension of spoken english? 3) what evidence of interference can be found in the perception and comprehension of spoken english by speakers of french? 4) how do speakers of french recognize english words? the general conclusion contains a summary of the principal findings of the thesis and a discussion of their pedagogical implications

Full textThis thesis aims to define the prosodic features English as spoken by advanced learners whose native langue is French. The contrastive study of previous research on the prosodic Systems of French and English led me to set a number of hypotheses about cases of prosodic interference in their interlanguage. These hypotheses were then tested experimentally through the comparative acoustic analysis of the productions of two groups of speakers : a group of French learners of English and a control group of native English speakers. The perceptibility of the deviations' found in the production data was assessed through the subjective evaluation of this data by naive native English listeners. The results show that French learners of English have a specific prosody that distinguishes them perceptually from native speakers. Most - but not ail- prosodic 'deviations' in the learners' interlanguage can be accounted for in terms of interference from their mother tongue (Le. French). Because these areas represent a learning challenge for French learners of English, particular attention was paid to the realisation of prosodic focusing and deaccenting, as well as to the intonation of interrogatives and of complex tones. Particular prosodic contexts (like the ends of interrogative rising contours as well as continuation at the edge of non-final tone units) also proved to impair the learners' marking of lexical stress. The results drawn from read speech are then compared to the prosodic features of the learners' conversation data

Full textAny method of teaching french to english speakers has to take into account the following fact: the speech characteristics of french in what conceras articulations, syllabifications, and stress and intonation patterns are at the antipodes of those of english. It is therefore accessary for the english speaking student to undergo a total re-education in regard to his auditory perception and promunciation habits if he is to understand and make himself understood by native speakers of french. Yet this necessity is almost totally ignored by most textbooks of french, the systematic teaching of pronunciation being left to specialized courses generally requiring two years of french as a prerequisite. The thesis presents a method of teaching spoken french, based on a phonological progression, which provides, from the start, systematic training in the characteristics of spoken french (such as linking, open syllabification, group stress, typical intonation patterns, etc. ) and teaches the french phonoligical systeme explicitly and in its own right, on a par with vocabulary and grammar

Full textThe present research is a contribution to the current effeorts of globalisation of the collective action theories, i. E. Opening-up of their empirical bases. Contrary to the dominant primordialist interpretations, this study considers that the Anglophone Cameroon collective protests fully deserve a sociology of mobilisations. To understand the persistence and the intensity variations of these phenomena over the longue durée, we propose an integrated framework based on the most recent theoretical developments, without rejecting the Africanist sociology most solid assets. In the wake of an emerging body of work it is suggested that a relevant recycling enables to articulate the categories of "resistance" ans "protestation". This approach is then implemented in two main steps. The first confronts historical and ethnographic data to shed some light on the formation of a collective action repertoire for the considered area. Following the contentious episode of 1990-95, the second part shows how this protest know-how is maintained, enriched or wasted through various trajectories of mobilisations' relative specialisation : institutionalisation, radicalisation and socialisation. Finally, despite increased environmental constraints, a rich Anglophone protest culture, opened and clearly confrontative appears, rooted in a series of local daily practices, as well as fed by transnational dynamics

Full textThe development of postcolonial studies has provided a new interpretative framework in which to think about the literary production of countries that have undergone colonialism. In this context, the African novel has been transformed and new poetic elements have appeared after independence. I have chosen to analyze six novels from three distinct national literary inspirations to carry a comparative analysis comparing different types of violence. Despite the differences found between the colonization and independence processes, I noticed that the issues related to violence are often repeated. My aim has been to study the experience of violence through Mia Couto’s, Sony Labou Tansi’s and JM Coetzee’s narrative work, examining for instance, the abuse of power, the construction of stereotypes, oppression and the utilization of orphanages to show the richness of this literature that aims at unsettling the established order and offering a new version of past events; and also on the structural level, humor or linguistic creations reveal the desire to translate and hybridize cultures

Full textWithin post colonial literatures, the theme of exile has been thoroughly studied. But the theme of childhood is just as important although somewhat neglected. This study aims at defining what makes the figure of the child particularly significant in the identity quest which is that of the Caribbean islands, given that the child is omnipresent as a narrator or a main protagonist. I have tried to show to what extent the child is of interest to the writer because he sticks to the etymology of the word - infans a representation of the silence in which a whole community has been maintained through slavery and colonisation. The writer from the Caribbean thus tries to hand their voice back to his community. It is quite clear that the child, if he is a representation of that silence, oppression and alientation to which several peoples were confronted, expresses also the desire to reappropriate one's past, to recompose a body and a voice of one's own. He is a sign of the necessity of "re-memberment". Numerous novels and shortstories from the 1950's to the 1990's tend to show that operating a detour through childhood and rewriting it (it is interesting to note that autobiograpjhy hardly exists in that regional literature), constitute a privileged mode of the identity quest led by Caribbean writers on behalf of their community

Full textOne of the particularities of the process of sociolinguistic acquisition in a foreign language concerns the difficulty of learners to integrate the sociolinguistic norms of the target language. If in their native culture, the learners build a network of associations between linguistic knowledge and social knowledge, in a foreign language, they must develop this capacity. The main objectives of this work are to understand how learners develop schemas that associate sociolinguistic variants with social parameters and how they associate socio-indexical values to varieties. We carried out two studies with FLE learners studying in France. For the first study, we did a repetition task with 24 English-speaking students and 42 Chinese-speaking students. The second study, a subjective reaction test, was conducted among 40 English-speaking students, 41 Chinese-speaking students, and 88 native French-speaking students. Our analysis highlights the tendency of learners to make homogeneous statements that are not homogeneous at the sociolinguistic level. This result suggests that learners construct sociolinguistic schemas of standard and non-standard varieties in a foreign language. We have also found that learners are sensitive to sociolinguistic variations in the target language. Indeed, they judged standard and non-standard French statements differently. Our analysis also reveals differences in the construction of sociolinguistic schemas and in the judgments of varieties between the two nationalities of our study

Full textBased on a vast corpus of grammars and dictionaries of linguistic terminology, all published between the 16th and the 21st centuries in the French and Anglophone traditions, this thesis exposes and unravels the paradoxes raised by the term irréel and its equivalent unreal(ity). If several studies have indeed analysed the linguistic expression of unreality in present-day English, only few have shed light on the discontinuity between the unspecialised use of the term and the specialised one. Notwithstanding that it is a conventional term in the French grammatical tradition, irréel and its equivalent unreal(ity) are often portrayed as referring to nebulous and abstract notions, with polymorphic terminological manifestations, which explains why their adequacy and usefulness are at stake in linguistic descriptions. Our corpus-based approach thus seeks to explain and ultimately solve the problem posed by the complex terminological web that arises out of these notions. A careful perusal of our corpus reveals that, in view of the way unreality is conceptualised in French and Anglophone grammars, non-factuality cannot be conceived as a binary category. In line with the socio-cognitive approach to terminology, we suggest a modelisation of unreality that is articulated around a prototype structure

Full textBefore the age of 4, English- and French-speaking children use standard and non standard forms to refer to themselves and their addressee. In the past, several semantic, morphosyntactic and pragmatic parameters have been investigated as potential factors responsible for these various forms. In the present study, we examine the role of parental speech on children’s productions. Previous research has in fact suggested that parents’ standard as well as non standard ways of referring to themselves and their child when addressing her, may play a role in the process of pronoun acquisition (cf. Rabain-Jamin and Sabeau-Jouannet, 1989; Budwig, 1996; Kirjavainen et al., 2009; Morgenstern, 2011). However, no systematic study of the speech parents address to their child has been conducted. To tackle this issue, we perform analyses on 4 corpora from the CHILDES database, composed of monthly video-recorded interactions in 2 French-speaking and 2 English-speaking dyads. Taking the children’s non standard ways of referring to themselves and their interlocutor as our starting point, we first question the influence of the frequency of similar forms and constructions observed in the input, on the children’s productions. Observing that the children use different forms in different contexts, we then ask whether these form-function associations can also be found in the input or whether children create them. Our method therefore combines constructivist approaches and functionalist approaches to the process of language acquisition. Our observations suggest that children’s productions reflect both the specificities of the surrounding input and their own linguistic and cognitive analyses. As they observe and use more and more language, acquire additional linguistic means of expressing their communicative intentions, and as the input and feedback they receive becomes diversified, children gradually come to refer to themselves as speakers and to their addressees as interlocutors

Full textThis study analyses Francophones’ and Anglophones’ acquisition of Spanish indicative and subjunctive moods. Formal and functionalist semantics and pragmatics, namely two theories of meaning, Possible Worlds Theory and Relevance Theory, are the framework adopted for the description of mood distribution in this study. Concerning acquisition, the framework is the generative formal linguistics. One hundred and fifty-five learners completed a three-task test that measured their Spanish proficiency level and their ability to acquire mood selection in subordinate complement clauses. Their scores were compared to those of a control group of twenty-six native speakers. The results show no correlation between the learners’ native language and their acquisition of mood selection, but there is a positive correlation with their level of Spanish. Our results also show some areas of vulnerability during the acquisition in both groups of learners.

Full textDuring our thesis work we have focused our interest on the study of the creators, the spaces of creation and the creations themselves. Throughoutour discussions, we tried to identify intercultural exchanges between these two movements. These social movements are bot consequences of racial isolation experienced by people of color in the English-speaking America. Since their intemationalization, hip-hop culture and the Rastafarian movement have successfully exported themselves on the five continents. We chose to support our conceptua and methodological approach on the following terms: Interculturality, New Social Movements, religion, multiculturalism, cultural diversity and capitalism, deterritorialization and creolization. The hip-hop movement and Rastafarianism built a new set that transcends each other but dot not eradicatetheir respective specificities. This phenomenon is a refleçtion of the world in whichwe operate. The hybridcultures ino longer a set of rigidvalues and weil defined, on the contrary, this mechanismis becoming more complex and sometimescontradictoryln our society, many people must build their Mure at the meeting point of several cultures and several groups more or Iess structured. At the end of our demonstration, it is clear that our premise is completely verified. There is a link between the Rastafarian and the hip-hop movement. There are many exchanges between the two diasporas composed of descendants of Africans transplanted in the United States and Jamaica

Full textPar le choix de son objet autant que par celui de sa méthode, où le dialogue interdisciplinaire et interculturel occupe une place essentielle, cette étude se veut doublement novatrice. Elle embrasse plusieurs objectifs. Premièrement, faire connaître une production littéraire francophone largement méconnue, issue d’une aire géographique et culturelle spécifique (la Polynésie). Deuxièmement, renforcer le dialogue trans-océanique grâce à la confrontation des productions francophones et anglophones, et s’inscrire ainsi pleinement dans l’actualité de la recherche sur les littératures océaniennes. Troisièmement, usant des apports de ce dialogue et des outils proposés par l’analyse écocritique, poser la question de l’existence ou non d’un univers littéraire trans-linguistique et océanien. Quatrièmement, contribuer à enrichir et éclairer les théories littéraires écocritiques grâce aux spécificités et aux problématiques soulevées par les littératures polynésiennes. Œuvres littéraires et méthode critique s’inscrivent donc dans un processus d’échanges et de retours constant et dynamique, s’éclairant réciproquement afin de parvenir à une compréhension mutuelle plus profonde et féconde de nouvelles possibilités.

Full textThe purpose of this work is to offer an analysis of the way canada is represented by english- speaking canadian historians. Historians, rather than intellectuals in general, were chosen as the object of study because since the beginning of historical writing in canada, they chose to describe themselves as key agents in the process of defining a national identity and defending national unity. Such a role is crucial in a country whose identity is particularly fragile, due to the lack of a proper declaration of independence from great britain, the difficulty of differentiating itself from the united states, and the internal pressure of ethnic and regional diversity. Historians represent canada in many varied ways; they focus on the political, social, economic, or environmental characteristics which they each consider beneficial to its national development. This variety, however, should not blur the underlying unity of the shared effort to create a specific national identity. Historians' focus on national identity is not unexpected at the time when canada was built; it is more surprising after the country has proven its existence as a united and independent state on the american continent. The canadian identity, as it is analyzed by historians, seems perpetually threatened, even when it should be well anchored. It is always a relative identity, established in relation with three main partners (great britain, the united states, and the french-speaking community). Ironically, these characteristics seem to show that the canadian identity is all the stronger for always seeking to find itself

Full textExile and roaming are recurrent themes in the contemporary literature of the lesser english and french antilles. The works of a. Cesaire, e. Glissant, g. Pineau, d. Radford, saint-john perse, a. And s. Schwarz-bart, n. Bissoondath, v. S naipaul, c. Philipps, s. Selvon and d. Walcott bear the marks of the exodus and exiles of the antillean people. The considered corpus is composed of poems, novels, essays and texts with an autobiographical character. The study questions the way authors write the story of exile and their own exile story. It sounds out the relationship between the mother continents - africa and india - and the occidental countries : france, great britain, canada and the united states. The first part, " exiles memories ", studies the dialectic of the memory and the forgetfulness, analyses the elaboration of the memory places - ocean of the conquest, sea of the deportation, mythical africa and india. It explores the track : manifestation of a fragmentary and often lacunar memory. The second part, "migrant writings", has been consecrated to the exile in the west. It studies the texts in which the "i" is predominant and is situated between autobiography and fiction. It considers the part of the author's character in his writing and the spaces of the migration. " the roaming in the world" questions the "deterritorialisation" concept. This part focuses on the work of saint-john perse, e. Glissant and d. Walcott. The feeling to be west indian, which the three authors differently share, opens on the referent seas and the american continent. The concept of roaming, that can be found in the writing process itself, generates poetics and elaborates a multiple cartography. Inspired by different sources, it carries through the idea of a non exclusive belonging. Emerges an exile and roaming literature that is open of the whole world

Full textThe aim of this research is to highlight factors that stimulate pedagogical uses of digital tools by studying the interaction between the institutional framework, the technological framework, and the individual characteristics of teachers. The originality of the present study is based on the fact that it focuses on organizational, individual or cultural differences, and the influence of these differences on the educational practices of digital tools.Although digital tools are used in schools in Ghana, in most cases they are computer literacy, despite the infrastructure, technological, human and financial challenges raised by (Karsenti, Collin, & Harper-Merrett, 2011). The literature indicates that in the context of Africa in general, there is a marginal category of teachers who integrate digital tools into their classroom practices (Karsenti, Collin, & Harper-Merrett, 2012). This shows that there is an imbalance in the pedagogical use of digital tools, between teachers. It therefore seemed important to carry out a study that would shed more perfect light on factors that stimulate educational practices in digital tools. Through such research it seemed possible to draw up diagrams that describe interactions between the characteristics of schools, the individual characteristics of teachers and the educational practices of digital tools.In the context of this research, the characterization of De Vries (2001) on educational software, has enabled us to identify the different types of educational software used in surveyed schools. The Raby (2004) and Romeo (2015) models have enabled us to identify the level of pedagogical use of the digital tools of the surveyed teachers, in terms of relevance and variety.The methodological choice of this research is based on a multi-case study inspired by (Yin, et al, 2013), involving eleven secondary schools, and thirty teachers. Data collection was carried out in two phases, targeting school managers and teachers respectively, by means of two questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observations of field situations.An analysis of the characteristics of schools that have put in place strong mechanisms for the pedagogical integration of digital tools, and those of teachers who have regular uses, various, and relevant digital tools in classroom practices, highlights several aspects presented in the final report. In addition, the fact that the school was of a high socioeconomic level, English school, of a large size in terms of student numbers, and was involved in school programs which had undergone reforms, to take into account issues related to the pedagogical integration of digital tools into classroom practices, seemed to have a positive effect on the level of ICT equipment and resources, or educational practices of digital tools. The results also show that the disciplines taught (science, electronics, industrial design, technology, and foreign languages), the experience of professional use of digital tools, motivations for use, in particular those aimed at communication, the assessment of pupils online, and the development of critical thinking of pupils, the implementation of active pedagogical approaches, and involvement in educational projects of the school team, linked to digital education, also seemed to have a positive and strong influence on the educational practices of digital tools. In all cases, the results also illustrate medium or low trends characterising the relative links between institutional characteristics, individual characteristics of teachers, and educational practices of digital tools

Full textI endeavoured to study a phenomenon underlying contemporary speculative fiction (science fiction and fantasy): the creation of a ‘secondary world', to use J.R.R. Tolkien's phrasing. I had to solve two preliminary problems. First, the cultural and economic phenomenon that speculative fiction represents has a blurry outline, questions regarding genre delimitation and wider cultural problems (is speculative fiction defined only by a number of literary patterns, or by the whole cultural apparatus that goes with it?) being difficult to answer. Secondly, does the notion secondary worlds only apply to invented worlds that are entirely different or detached from the real world, or can it be applied to texts that take place at least partly in the real world, etc.? Speculative fiction being a diverse genre that has been steadily evolving for years, I have chosen to avoid giving definitive answers to those questions. Instead of looking for boundaries, I have tried to emphasise the various building blocks of secondary worlds in speculative fiction: the traditions of the genre authors rely on to convey their view of an original universe to their readers, in a dialogue between known elements used as a foundation and the idiosyncratic view of history, geography and the place of mankind in the particular secondary world developed by the author. In an attempt to open this study to the contemporary practice of world-building, I have concluded with the questions that speculative fiction authors face today: how to renew the tropes of the genre, how speculative fiction pervades other media, in particular the practices of fans

Full text"modern cameroon is the result of two communities emerging from a joint francobritish colonisation. From that the institution of an official bilingualism was designed to express this origin. The media of the state are construed following this dualist logic and is composed of bilingual wording. Now, despite an institutional environment preaching a "united voice", the official press produces a polyphonic discourse, often contrary to government stipulations. These differences are often due to the english-speaking journalists who use the media as a means of assertion and as a vehicle for political demands in the face of a french-speaking majority power. Full textEnglish Canada first learned of surrealism through periodical publications, books conferences and few exhibitions. Each of those dispositifs vehiculaires (Regis Debray, cours de mediologie generale, Paris, Gallimard, 1991) diffused an idea of the movement based on their differing perceptions : for example, surrealism is essential to the opening up of the canadian society according to the canadian forum, yet it is denounced as fascism in the pages of the saturday night. From the first manifestation of surrealism in Canada at the canadian national exhibition of 1938 (Toronto), the idea of surrealism has always been subject to english canadian partiotism yet free from it thanks to favorable conditions of diffusion caused by the transitory apostasy of the dominating ideology of nationalism. Furthermore, we cannot dissociate the idea of surrealism on canadian soil from the two immigration waves that Canada experienced at the beginning of the century. Moreover, protestantism, intimately linked to the burgeoning of industrialization and to the temperance of the senses, is greatly responsible for the delay in the appropriation of surrealism by english speaking canadians. Winter is also a reason a determining factor as for the circulation of surrealism in Canada. Therefore, the surrealist project manifested itself on other terrains in order to approprioate another form, and by other means, however, we xill see that it is throuhg a sensible romantism proper to canadians, that aesthettic liberation of surrealism will bring Canada toward another type of figuration

Full textAll through the history of Western art, literature and painting have had polemical but constructive relationships. In the thick of this exchange, the representation of the Dutch painting of the Golden age is brought out in strong relief in contemporary novels. Among the reasons for the particular interest of the novelists in this school of painting, can be found : its innovating strength, its profuse production, its closeness with the world of the novel ; and also, among he crowd of talented little masters, the patronage of some legendary figures now seen as the beacons of the artistic universe : Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. Having forced its way into the novel with Balzac, Dutch painting is then seen in Gautier's and the Goncourts'work, and holds a high rank in Remembrance of Things Past : Rembrandt is indisputably recognized as a genius, and Proust bas highly contributed to the recognition of Vermeer's excellence. Dutch painters may sometimes be met in the work of some acknowledged authors, but are mostly represented in the recent popular editions. This study deals with the status bestowed on to the description by French and English novels since Proust, with the means used to involve the painting - as an object - in the narrative dynamic, with the way the legendary figure of the painters is perpetuated or bent, and in the end, with what's become today of the artist's novel

Full textThis doctoral dissertation aims to contribute to the study of the regulatory functionthat applies to specialised domains (Petit, 2002a, 2004, 2010) through the analysis of the health,law and engineering professions in the UK.The first part of our dissertation describes the theoretical foundations and the key elements forour research. We first define some important notions, in particular those of specialised domainand specialised discourse, before approaching the notion of regulation. We then offer a typologyof the discourses on regulation and those contributing to regulation in order to highlight theirmain stylistic and rhetorical characteristics. Lastly, we present the notion of profession, whichhas a different meaning in English and in French, before pointing out the characteristics of theanglophone regulated professions.In the second part of this dissertation, we examine the regulatory function that characterises thehealth, law and engineering domains in the UK, after showing that they are specialised domains.We then examine, in each of them, the general functioning of regulation through the study of itsactors and practices. We intend to show that there are constant elements in these domains, butalso specific elements of regulation in each of them. Full textFrench as a foreign language was taught in Nigeria, as an optional subject in secondary schools in the 1950s before being made compulsory about 10 years ago (1998). For economic, political and social reasons, Nigeria decided to develop teaching and learning of French language at secondary and tertiary levels. Many students study it to become teachers or work in other related fields. Every student must register for a linguistic perfection programme in Nigeria French Language Village (NFLV), an Inter University Centre for French Studies before getting a degree. As a lecturer, we noticed that they have difficulties in grammar, which is the basis for acquisition and proper use of any given language. Analysing these difficulties and proposing new approaches can help them express themselves better in French. This Thesis analyses difficulties in the use of qualitative adjectives and proposes a better way of teaching and grammar acquisition in French at NFLV in particular and in other French departments in Nigeria. Finally, it corroborates other researches already done on the teaching of French in NFLV, while shedding light on the problem of in service training of lecturers

Full textHow to define the grail motive in order to determinate a corpus? The use of the word "grail" is necessary, or at least a proper name related to the myth, except if those terms have only a metaphoric meaning. At first, a presentation of the 106 works of fiction picked out, revealing the variety of styles and cultural worlds, is followed by a possible classification of these works. The tendancies, fashions and historical stakes related to the grail are found out, from 1923 until nowadays. The authors' postulates and the religious, socio-political or psychological interpretations openly given of the grail in some of the works are pointed out. An interrogation is set on, about what the victorian, wagnerian or post- wagnerian 19th century has changed in our perception of the quest of the grail. How the contemporary authors are they dealing with such a mediaeval material as the quest of the grail? This implies three questions. How these contemporary works are they linked to the mediaeval stories? The answer is found in a reflexion about the medieval notion of "continuation" still existing nowadays. How can the quest of the grail be without knights? An investigation about the knight's image in the works shows that knighthood is often as ideal and unreachable as the grail. How to pass from our profane space and time to this mythic space and time necessary for the quest of the grail? Always distinct from ours, the other world is often closer than one thinks. From the contemporary works, four concrete images of the grail emerge, each one emblematic of a position towards it. Gold refers to the transcendant grail, silver to the negotiable grail, emerald to the evil grail, clay to the common grail. Unless the grail is the place of the conjonctio oppositorum. Finally the mythical aspect of the works is revealed from their conceptions of the quest, which is often impossible to bring to an end, however achieved sometimes
