Abstract:
Purpose Individuals only click on a very small fraction of the in-app advertisements (ads) they are exposed to. Despite this fact, organizations spend generously placing in-app ads without theoretical knowledge of how the structure and the semantics of in-app ads influence individuals’ clicking behavior. This study aims to identify how the processing of structural and semantic factors leads to clicking behavior. Design/methodology/approach Based on the limited capacity theory, this paper proposes that the sequential processing of structural and semantic factors leads to clicking behavior. To mirror the sequential process, this paper applies a process-oriented configurational approach and performs a two-step qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) using 262 incidents of exposure to in-app ads. Findings The results support the proposed sequential processing and show that neither structural nor semantic factors alone lead to clicking behavior. This paper reveals four different paths of sequential processing of in-app ads that lead to clicking behavior. The results show that individuals click on non-animated in-app ads even though these are perceived as irritating or privacy-concerning. When the in-app ads are animated, individuals do only click on them when these are not irritating, privacy-concerning and personalized. Research limitations/implications Organizations can use these findings to improve their in-app ads and generate more clicks. This study recommends that organizations place in-app ads in a prominent location, design them similar to the design of the app and use bright colors. The advertising message needs to have new and relevant information in a credible and entertaining way. Depending on the degree of personalization, organizations should use different sizes of the in-app ad and only use animation if it is unlikely that the in-app ad caused irritation or privacy concerns. Practical implications Organizations can use these findings to improve their in-app ads and generate more clicks. This paper recommends that organizations place in-app ads in a prominent location, design them similar to the design of the app and with bright colors. Originality/value From the in-app ad perspective, this study is the first to theoretically develop and empirically show the sequential processing of structural and semantic factors of in-app ads. From the methodological perspective, this study applies an advanced configurational two-step QCA approach, which is capable of analyzing sequential processes and is new to marketing research.

Abstract:
Abstract Online advertisers have the non-trivial job of jointly assessing the effects of banner ad design elements available in a large number of such formats. Our research found that animated formats are superior to static formats in most settings. It confirms that they can improve engagement, since they can generate higher recall, attract user attention, and create favorability for the advertised brand. Yet, static formats can still be effective when it comes to price ads and re-targeting. Most interestingly, we found that re-targeted ads are effective only if they offer price incentives. Another interesting finding is that the tactic of serving blanks – for instance, for page views from foreign countries – can distort simple measures of campaign effectiveness, such as click-through rates.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on Scratch language of programming and traces its math and linguistic features. From a complex consideration about Scratch language programming in linguistic paradigm, focusing on structural, semantic and syntactic features and logic of its narration, this research attempts to clarify specifics of the language and correlate it with the English language features. Global integration of ideas and sciences underline the crucial importance of programming and language conglomerate. Human-computer interfaces, software systems, and development of various programming languages depend on well-balanced structure, shape, logic, and appearance of the actual code. Dynamic characteristics of the Scratch programming environment sustain the creation of interactive and media-rich projects. Ad expansion of Scratch for mediation of animated stories, music videos, science projects, tutorials, and other contents necessitates multifaceted analysis of this programming environment and evokes the interest of researching Scratch from the math and linguistic perspective as one possible projection on various aspects of the considered programming language.

Abstract:
Southeast Europe has played an important role in shaping the genetic diversity of sheep due to its proximity to the Danubian route of transport from the Near East into Europe, as well as its possible role as a post-domestication migration network and long tradition of sheep breeding. The history of Romania and, in particular, the historical province of Dobruja, located on the shore of the Black Sea, has been influenced by its geographical position at the intersection between the great powers of the Near East and mainland Europe, with the Middle Ages being an especially animated time in terms of trade, migration, and conflict. In this study, we analyzed the mitochondrial control region of five sheep originating from the Capidava archaeological site (Dobruja, Southeast Romania), radiocarbon dated to the Early Middle Ages (5–10th century AD), in order to better understand the genetic diversity of local sheep populations and human practices in relation to this particular livestock species. The analyses illustrate high haplotype diversity in local medieval sheep, as well as possible genetic continuity in the region. A higher tendency for North to South interaction, rather than East to West, is apparent, together with a lack of interaction along the Asian route. Continuous interaction between the First Bulgarian Empire, which occupied Dobruja starting with the 7th century AD, and the Byzantine Empire is indicated. These results might suggest expanding trade in Southeast Romania in the Early Middle Ages.

Abstract:
RuangGuru is one of the most successful startups in Indonesia, which is engaged in online tutoring. The application user has reached up to 15 million students. This achievement is the result of the advertisements that often appear on television media, especially during new school academic year or new semester. This study examines advertisements on television media less than 30 seconds to attract customers. This study uses semiotic to analyze television ads for the product. The research method uses an interpretive descriptive approach to analyze the signs used in advertisements. The data resource is four video recording advertisements on television media. The analysis starts with transcription and making video screenshots to sharpen the analysis. The results indicate that to attract television viewers, RuangGuru uses signs that indicate superior features. The features such as animated learning videos, practice questions, discussion, and ease of learning through applications. The celebrity figures in the advertisement represent students and parents who will later become consumers of RuangGuru. The ad also has a sign indicating how easy it is to pay and how cheap it is to subscribe to the Ruang Guru application compared to conventional tutoring. The blue color, which is the dominance of advertisements, shows that the RuangGuru app is trustworthy and can increase students' confidence in facing classroom learning.

Abstract:
Sir Roger de Coverley, representative of the landed gentry in The Spectator, is typically read as a lovable, old-fashioned eccentric and comic object. Closer attention to the series of essays set in and around Sir Roger’s Worcestershire estate — especially numbers 117, 122, and 130 — reveals that the baronet’s work as a justice of the peace stimulates Mr. Spectator’s moral development. Sir Roger’s intimate relationships with his inferiors and his quasi-familial approach to problem-solving challenge Mr. Spectator’s worldview, allowing Addison and Steele to express their ideas through an interplay of voices. Mr. Spectator’s evolving first-person perspective, animated by the loose, ad hoc structures of the justice’s work, where determining the beginning and ending of a legal action is often difficult, clarifies Sir Roger’s exemplary functions in the text. This essay argues that The Spectator functions as a provocative inquiry into ideology rather than a vehicle for Whiggish politics through a narrative point of view that responds to the characters and settings it encounters, most significantly the figure of the country magistrate. The Spectator’s adoption of the magistrate’s structures of judgment elucidates the role of the rural justice of the peace in eighteenth-century English society and law.

Abstract:
The concept of Fine Language is the result of the creation of a long research, originally in the form of a researchreport on the science of Fine Language which later developed into dissertation research as much and as thick as 'onecoffin' (58x33x37cm). This Fine Language is a way of 'reading' pictures, from various images, pictures of children, prehistoric cave pictures, wayang beber pictures, then to symbolic images, decorative images and shadow images fromshadow puppets (wayang kulit). Also included are temple relief images and modern drawings, animated images, filmsand pictures produced by other digital technologies, such as ad images. The word language is different from the imagelanguage. In the image language, we can already describe the shape of the drawn. In the word language, use the word torepresent an object that is drawn. Often experience miscommunication because with various words (from different regions/tribes/countries) to describe an object. In the language of the image there are wimbas, in the wimba there is thecontent of wimba and way of wimba. The content of the wimba is a picture contained in the wimba, and the way thewimba is how the wimba is drawn and can be told. Through the 'science' is the original image that is beginning to beunderstood and retold as teaching materials or materials of scientific art for future studies, about the image of traditionsand modern drawings.

Abstract:
At the beginning of the seventeenth century English composers used only a handful of keys: they combined five keynotes (G, A, C, D, and F) with the three signatures documented in English solmization theory (♮,♭, and♭♭). By the end of the century English theorists described eighteen keys—all of the modern major and minor keys with up to four signature accidentals. But the route from eight to eighteen keys was not straightforward. This article traces this route by examining how the function of signature flats and sharps changed in seventeenth-century England. At the beginning of the century signature flats and sharps were clefs, mere notational symbols that provided a shorthand for the probable pitches in a composition. As a result, English musicians used adjacent keys (i.e., ♮-D and -D), which were distinct, well-formed versions of a broader category of D minor. In the middle of the century, composers and theorists used ad hoc and asymmetrical strategies ♭ to create new keys. Composers explored new flat keys through the process of signature creep, while theorists devised new sharp keys when they identified the parallel key relationship. Finally, theoretical interventions at the end of the century “fixed” keys into our modern system but obscured the varied pitch structure that still animated musical practice. The messy, flexible circumstances in which keys arose complicate several assumptions about modern key; this evidence challenges notions of transpositional equivalence and reveals that different kinds of keys may be built on different conceptual foundations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Inoltre, può essere sospettato un incremento di tossicità.<br>Introduction and aim: Sorafenib, an anti-angiogenic agent, is the only approved systemic therapy for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the rate of response is suboptimal. Metronomic chemotherapy is well tolerated and has been shown to act on dividing endothelial cells, resulting in an anti-angiogenic effect. Metronomic capecitabine is potentially active in human HCC. Aim of the study was to evaluate the combination of sorafenib and capecitabine to demonstrate a possible synergistic effect in a HCC xenograft mice model. Methods: heterotopic mice model was created in SCID mice. Once mass diameter of 5-10 mm was reached, mice were randomized to receive placebo (n=9), sorafenib (n=7), capecitabine(n=7) or combination of them (n=10). Animals were studied at day 0 and +14 with B-mode ultrasound (US) and with contrast-enhanced (CE) US, then they were sacrificed. Western-Blot analysis was performed. Results: four mice belonging to the combination group and 1 belonging to placebo group were found dead in cages. After exclusion of these 5 mice, increase in median tumor volume at day +14 versus day 0 was +503 mm3 (range 109-1112) in the placebo group, +158 mm3 (36-331) in the sorafenib group, +462 mm3 (254-653) in the capecitabine group and +176 mm3 (29-338) in the combination group (p=0.002 across categories; p<0.05 between placebo and sorafenib or combination and between capecitabine and sorafenib or combination). Percentage of perfused areas at CEUS did not differed across categories neither at day 0 nor at day +14. VEGF levels at Western-Blot analysis were lower in the sorafenib group. Conclusions: the combination of sorafenib and capecitabine is not superior to mono-therapy with sorafenib in the treatment of HCC and an increased toxicity appears suggested.

Full text
Abstract:
The slow oscillation (SO) is a rhythmic cortical pattern that emerges during slow-wave sleep and under the effect of certain types of anesthesia. In this Thesis, we used this pattern as a paradigm to 1) identify functional alterations in the cerebral cortex of several mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and the Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), 2) to monitor the progression of these diseases, and 3) to evaluate the effectiveness of two therapeutic interventions. Slow oscillations were recorded in different cortical areas of these mouse models, and several parameters of this rhythmic pattern were quantified and compared between them and control groups. The parameters of the SO were similarly altered in 3xTg-AD and SAMP8 mouse models of AD, in a way that suggests a reduced excitability of the cortical network. In addition, these parameters were also altered in the vicinity of amyloid- β plaques in the APP/PS1 mouse model of AD, suggesting a reduced excitability of the neurons located around them. The realization of eight weeks of voluntary physical exercise on 7-month-old SAMP8 animals failed to cancel the differences between them and control animals, but attenuated the effects of aging on some parameters of the SO in both groups, showing similar values to those observed at 5 months of age. Changes in the SO parameters detected in Fmr1KO mouse model of FXS occurred in the opposite way to those detected in the AD mouse models, and were suggestive of a hyperexcitable cortical network. Those changes in the Fmr1KO mouse model were reverted by genetic partial blockade of CB1 cannabinoid receptors, which restored the differences between control and untreated Fmr1KO animals. The work conducted in this Thesis may be relevant to obtain a network phenotype in these animal models, which can be contrasted with that present in humans. Also, it provides clues about the mechanisms underlying the altered network activity, which could be contributing to the cognitive deficits present in the AD and FXS pathological conditions.

Abstract:
The presented thesis will examine tools of animated commercials on the basis of semiotic analysis of TV advertising. The animation is usually connected whit children's or family movies, however it is also extensively used in commercials, which are designed to affect adult audiences. The goal of the thesis was to find, how animated commercial attracts customers and how it differs from played ad. Therefore the underlying hypothesis is that animation is not just for children, but it may just as well successfully work in production for adults. The thesis is also based on the assumption that animated advertising uses other tools to capture the viewer than advertising played. The theoretical part is focused on presenting animation, its development, specifics and methods of analysis. Also it is focused on semiotic and practical side of advertisement and visual sings of image. In the practical part I will compare selected animated and played ads. My effort will be to describe tools of animation in commercials and to discover how they differ from played ads. Key words: semiotic in advertising, advertising, TV advertisening, animated ad, animation, semiotic analysis, encoding, denotation, connotation, image

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Attention is one of the most limited mental resources. The capacity of our visual attention is challenged by the increasingly rich media content and decreasing size of user interfaces embedded in many everyday appliances. Observations in fields such as advertising, with lengthy traditions in investigating the effects of visual attention and recognition may offer insights into effective interface design for pervasive computing applications. This study examines the impact of repetition and attention on recognition for four types of online ads: horizontal and vertical ads appearing in both animated and static forms. The authors observed that repetition enhanced recognition of ads, and that animated ads were generally better recognized while the effect of ad format was less significant. This chapter measured attention by eye fixations and fixation durations and found a strong relationship between attention and ad recognition.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes a Powhatan theory of power and suggests links to the archaeology and ethnohistory of towns in the lower Chesapeake. Early colonial-era sources highlight a recurring process whereby powerful outside forces, materials, and people were socialized within the Powhatan settlements known as Kings’ Houses. We suggest that a key Algonquian concept for understanding this process is manitou—the vital spiritual force manifest in dangerously potent people, animals, objects, and places. Within the Kings’ Houses of the colonial-era, Powhatan leaders harnessed manitou by orchestrating ritual, trade, and the built environment. Archaeological evidence of feasting, ditches, and palisades points toward similar practices associated with the construction of boundaries—ditches and palisades—within prominent settlements, starting in the thirteenth century AD. By transforming the objects and people that transgressed these boundaries, religious practitioners and political leaders exercised a “tactical power” grounded in Kings’ Houses and animated by manitou.

Abstract:
An inscription on a Chinese statue of Amitabha dated 746 AD reads, “As a matter of general principle, the highest truth is devoid of any image. But if there were no image, there would be no possibility for truth to manifest itself. The highest principle is without words. But if there were no words, how could the principle be known?” From the point of view of an art historian and through the example of a short animated film proposal, this essay investigates the ways in which strategies specific to animation, such as narrativity, metaphorical potency, metamorphosis, and most importantly, the capacity to penetrate intangible dimensions, mitigate these challenges. The author argues that animation offers a more efficacious medium than static images and theory in evincing Buddhist dharma; namely, that in the process of depicting Buddhist thought and practice, both the activity and product of animation become sites of merit-making and means of spiritual transformation in themselves.

Abstract:
According to Leibniz, the nested structure ad infinitum is the main intrinsic difference between a natural machine, which is God’s creation, and an artificial machine, which is a work of human art. The distinction turns on this: unlike an artificial machine, a natural machine remains a machine in the least of its parts. The author argues that Leibniz’s view of living beings turns on his peculiar usage of infinity in this context. He presents Leibniz’s response to Descartes’s attempt to use the distinction between artificial and natural machines in his reductive program and then develops both a structural and a functional reading of Leibniz’s notion of a natural machine. The author suggests that both readings (structural and functional) are not only compatible but also complementary, such that both illuminate Leibniz’s definition of a natural machine as a machine remaining a machine in the least of its parts.
