Abstract:
This article analyzes the discourse of Orientalism in Saladin: The Animated Series for the first episode entitled Rising Star. Edward Said (1978) in his book Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient (1978) opposed Western perspectives on the East and analyzed postcolonial literary works in historical and social contexts, and describes orientalist discrimination in speculating and specifying data sources for particular interests. This study draws on a series of animations directed by Steve Bristow that showcased the leading Islamic figure of the crusade, Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayubi (1137-1193) or known as Saladin by the Western world. Taking the personality of an Islamic character to be the main character in the animated series is something to be proud of, but the fact about Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayubi’s personality has been distorted in Saladin’s character. This study looked at the orientalist attacks on the personality of Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayubi and found that the Saladin’s character was portrayed as physically weak, shallow-minded, and disobedient to his father. The whole of this first episode shows the misrepresentation of facts and the distortion of the image of Salahuddin al-Ayubi.

Abstract:
Social criticism is generally comprised of individuals' ideas and opinions of societal problems that bring changes. Individuals can express their opinions through various media, including animated films. The animated series Mister Frimen created by Pavel Muntyan, Vladimir Ponomarev, Anatoly Dobrozan, and Vadim Demchog are notoriously sarcastic. The sarcastic remarks given by the main character are always about current problems in Russian society. This study focuses on the way the animated series Mister Frimen expresses social problems. This article uses intertextual theory and discourse analysis to analyze every message and symbol and how the messages are generated. The results show that each scene in Mister Frimen contains symbols illustrating social criticism messages about the situation of Russian society. Nonetheless, satire/social criticism offers suggestions for establishing societal peace and prosperity

Abstract:
Discussion of Orientalism through Semiotic Analysis in Animation ABSTRACT This study reveals, interprets and understands the oriental influence in Saladin: The Animated Series through the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. This study looks at the semiotic elements found in the animated series through a system of signs and this conceptual framework of Barthes is divided into two components, signifier and signified. This sign system is used to look at the symbols through frames in this animation. The analysis of this study examines the changes in the title, poster, use of language, which led to the occurrence of orientalism discourse to disgrace the Islamic figure, Salahuddin al-Ayubi. The findings of the study found that the Westerners used Saladin as a title and not Salahuddin al-Ayubi. Next, the changes in the portrayal of Islamic figure in the poster of the animated film Saladin and Saladin: The Animated Series. There was confusion when the main character of this animated series, Saladin, was not placed in the middle of the poster. Each of the posters shows the influence of orientalism. In terms of language use, the animated series shows the acceptance of external influences such as the use of English as the primary language. The Arabic language is used for the audience in the Middle East and the Malay language is positioned only as a subtitle. The results show that orientalism tarnishes the identity of this Islamic figure. Keywords: Orientalism, semiotic, sign system, signifier, signified.

Whilst animated series, whether it’s a TV series or web series is a relatively new media in Indonesia, it has gone through a significant process. One of the interesting aspects that we can observe from it is the development of the character design. It’s undeniable that foreign hegemony contributed in major parts of the design but we can’t overlook the efforts in finding Indonesia’s very own unique character design and how it affects the successors. Abstract:
The animated film Me & My Mum was released in mainland China and Hong Kong in 2014 and proved to be a huge box office hit, cashing in on the existing McDull animated films that are hailed as the best animations in Hong Kong. Previous scholarship suggests that the McDull animated film series is a symbol of Hong Kong local culture; it serves as a repository of the changing landscapes of Hong Kong and demonstrates hybrid identities. However, this article argues that the McDull animated film series is more translocal than local, a fact which reveals the dynamics of the Hong Kong–mainland China relationship after Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The translocalized McDull series demonstrates an obsession with Chineseness which helps to evoke the national identity. By aestheticizing powerlessness as cuteness through anthropomorphic animals, the McDull series used to be highly political; they grappled with the wounds of society in Hong Kong. However, the articulation of a well-rounded McDull in the translocalized film Me & My Mum indicates that it is conforming to the Chinese Communist Party’s ideology of ideal children while the political power of aestheticizing powerlessness is repressed, revealing the dominant power of the Chinese film market.

Despite continual improvements in production and writing quality, live-action Russian series have fared poorly in the global market. While many deals have been struck, Western remakes of Russian series have failed to appear, and live-action programs have failed to find mainstream audiences outside of Russia. Russian animated series, on the other hand, have enjoyed global success. The success and failure of different types of Russian series in the global media market suggests that many of the central problems of cultural exchange remain. Issues related to cost and risk continue to impede the global transfer of live-action series and formats from Russia even as animated series have become the most widely viewed Russian media products in history.

Abstract:
This study explores uses of metaphor and metonymy related to the concept of anger in the American television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 2012. The theoretical framework of the study is Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The data consists of metaphors and metonymies in the verbal and the pictorial mode. The pictorial data are visual expressions of the type called pictorial runes. In both modes, the underlying conceptual metaphors are identified, and the results are then compared between modes. The main finding is that the verbal mode contains a greater variety of metaphorical expressions. Explanations suggested for differences found between modes are: different technical possibilities of the two modes; universality in the pictorial mode and language specific metaphors as well as universal ones in the verbal mode; a connection of pictorial and verbal data respectively to different genres within the series; and the different narrator roles between the two modes.

Abstract:
Within contemporary modernity, media stand as a fundamental source of knowledge for individuals. This research has been conducted to analyze disability related content in a corpus comprising children animated television series. Eight characters with a chronic limitation, i.e. not being able to walk or not being able to see, have been identified within eighty-four episodes from seven series coproduced in France during the period 1990-2010 (Les Pastagums, Atout 5, Foot2Rue, Les Minijusticiers, Titeuf, Bali, Milo). They have been observed through the successive situations they appear in, the problems they encounter and the proposed solutions. They are mainly boys using a wheelchair and involved in physical activities. Most of them are treated differently in comparison to other characters in the same social virtual worlds and are portrayed through heroized participation, either as a supercrip or as a superhero. They are both physically powerful and socially skilled. Such treatment contains the frozen remains of a normative injunction of performance as a legitimate and hegemonic modality with respect to participation, the construction of self and social relations

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a sociohistorical analysis of gender representations in French animated television series. In analysing the programming strategy of television networks and the adaptation and rerun phenomena, the research reveals a structural tension between standardisation and innovation, as well as backlash effects. Indeed, these programs have generally conveyed a binary and essentialist conception of gender, minimizing female characters and confining them to secondary and caretaking roles. Nonetheless, following contemporary social changes, some productions have begun to challenge gender norms. 56 programs broadcast between 1957 and 2014 have been selected for this qualitative analysis. In 2015-2016, 11 comprehensive interviews were conducted with professionals as well as a fieldwork on the association Les Femmes s’Animent (the French counterpart of Women in Animation). This new angle helps to understand how the issue of gender inequalities is perceived by different professionals in the French animation industry (such as writers, producers, animators and television networks). While some of them try to fight against gender stereotypes, organisational and economic constraints as well as social norms related to child protection continue to impact the production of animated series

Abstract:
The question about the treatment that human beings must give to animals has been current since the emergence of the first civilizations. Whereas some societies develop thinking schemes in which the role of these beings was to serve human needs, another ones, from its origins, have regarded that all being, whether human or not, ought to be respected. Nowadays it is a common attitude to asume that animals are only means in order to satisfy, from the most elementary to the most trivial human needs. The food industry takes the lives of thousand of marine as well as terrestrial animalas every single day in order to supply the excesive demand of meat consumption. In the field of biomedical, industrial and military reserach, it is estimated that between 50 and 60 millions are used yearly in order to carry out laboratory experiments The traffic of wild species stolen from its hábitat, poaching for sporting or comercial purposes, runs and shows with aquatic animals among others, as well as the irresponsible abandonment of dogs and cats, which causes the overpopulation of these species. Not to mention the impact that the way of life of people has, where it is estimated that in a short period of time a considerable percentage of the species will have dissapeared from the planet. The foregoing makes evident the reification of the animal, where its value is determined by the benefit and economic retribution it represents for human beings. These forms of abuse and instrumentalization denote the absence of any moral questioning that makes these attitudes permisible. But, above all, the lack of respect for animals that leads to kill and make a large number of them suffer. The present investigation has as purpose to offer a perspective about if the human beings have duties with respect to the rights of the animals and if so, to what rights and duties is appealed. For this, three of the most representatives positions of the current debate have been analyzed: Tom Reagan’s deontological position, Peter Singer’s utilitarian one and and the one proposed by Martha Nussbaum the so called capacities approach. In addition to addressing other related issues such as Nature’s rights, as well as going through into the west’s philosophical and religious discourse in search of dissenting voices that since ancient times have contributed to build, along with some eastern doctrines, the tradition of respect toward animals.

Abstract:
Although animated sitcom fiction has always been the focus of researchers analysis, historical studies about animated series aired on TV are still scarce. Moreover, whether researchers have investigated animated sitcoms, it was not with the intention of discussing their relation to the images of Brazil and Brazilians conveyed both on TV and the Internet. Because of that the object of study of this thesis is the discussion of socio-historical-political dimensions in The Simpsons , a profitable animated sitcom and a satirical parody of a working class American lifestyle family, whose episodes have been aired on Brazil and all over the world s TV channels for more than two decades. Therefore, the corpus of this investigation is some of the series episodes, notably Blame it on Lisa during which the fictional family travels to Brazil. With the objective of bringing to light the representations of Brazil in the last decades the research makes use of the internauts speech acts of which emerge their critical discourse construction of the The Simpsons. The Internet, an interesting locus to reveal Brazil and its relation to the American production of series, is also used not only in an attempt to define simpsonized language and discuss the (re)signification of Brazil s imagery as created by the internauts, but also to put to question concepts such as family, childhood, criminality, violence, sexuality in children s programs and the lampooning of Brazilian identity symbols, always treated in an unflattering or negative light, in the search for larger audiences (Top 30 ratings) and for money, categories also selected for the development of this work. Still, anthropophagy, a category largely used in Brazilian literary (con)texts in the beginning of the XX century, supported the analysis of internauts and actual viewers perception of the series as a point of departure for helping engender behavior and attitudes that can help rebuild realities, via massive media, even if inspired by The Simpsons, and mainly based upon criticism revealed by the episode Blame it in Lisa. On the one hand, the text attests the capacity of Brazilians, by means of using communicative technologies, for reacting against the negative satirical portrait of Brazil and Brazilians and on the other, for rescuing this image, even if utilizing that simpsonized language . Research leads to the conclusion that Brazilian internauts and actual viewers do not watch The Simpsons passively but stand up against the unflattering insinuations in relation to Brazilian culture, society, history, folklore, Brazil and the Brazilian people, and try to rescue those images conveyed by the sitcom episodes, especially the ones in Blame it on Lisa . And yet, the text evidences that certain images of Brazil and Brazilians represented in the animated sitcom expresses the troublesome reality of truthfully and because of that they have become one of the thesis concerns and another significant aspect to be considered. Such images are the reason for the investigator s raising relevant questions and his strongly suggesting accurate reflection and discussion on such a matter.

Abstract:
This presentation advances a case study for an ongoing intercultural animation project which seeks to meaningfully educate New Zealand Tauiwi (the country's diverse groups, including migrants and refugees) on the values, customs and protocols (Tikanga) of Māori (the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand). Ako For Niños (‘education for children’), implemented by a migrant social services organisation and media-design team, introduces Latin American Tauiwi to Tikanga through an animated children’s series, developed with a community short story writing competition and co-design with a kaitiaki (Māori guardian/advisor). Māori are recognised in Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the founding document of New Zealand) as partners with Pākeha (European New Zealanders), and Māori knowledge and Tikanga are important to society and culture in Aotearoa. Notwithstanding, there has been a historic lack of attention paid to developing meaningful understandings of Māori perspectives for New Zealand Tauiwi. Ako For Niños endeavours to address current shortages of engaging resources on Māori worldviews for Tauiwi communities, create opportunities for Tauiwi to benefit from Māori epistemologies, and foster healthy community relationships between Māori and Latin American Tauiwi. Through the project’s short story competition, Tauiwi were given definitions of Tikanga through a social media campaign, then prompted to write a children’s tale based on one of these in their native language. This encouraged Tauiwi to gain deeper comprehension of Māori values, and interpret Tikanga into their own expressions. Three winning entries were selected, then adapted into stop-motion and 2D animations. By converting the stories into aesthetically pleasing animated episodes, the Tikanga and narratives could be made more captivating for young audiences and families, appealing to the senses and emotions through visual storytelling, sound-design, and music. The media-design team worked closely with a kaitiaki during this process to better understand and communicate the Tikanga, adapting and co-designing the narratives in a culturally safe process. This ensured Māori knowledge, values, and interests were disseminated in correct and respectful ways. We argue for the importance of creative participation of Tauiwi, alongside co-design with Māori to produce educational intercultural design projects on Māori worldviews. Creative participation encourages new cultural knowledge to be imaginatively transliterated into personal interpretations and expressions of Tauiwi, allowing indigenous perspectives to be made more meaningful. This meaningful engagement with Māori values, which are more grounded in relational and human-centred concepts, can empower Tauiwi to feel more cared for and interconnected with their new home and culture. Additionally, co-design with Māori can help to honour Te Tiriti, and create spaces where Tauiwi, Pākeha and Māori interface in genuine partnership with agency (rangatiratanga), enhancing the credibility and value of outcomes. This session unpacks the contexts informing, and methods undertaken to develop the series, presenting current outcomes and expected directions (including a screening and exhibition). We will also highlight potential for the methodology to be applied in new ways in future, such as with other Tauiwi communities, different cultural knowledge, and increased collaborative co-design with Māori.

Abstract:
Subtitling Malay movies into English in Malaysia presents particular constrictions and defies subtitlers, as the two languages have little in common and have a number of untranslatability elements. Upin and Ipin is a Malaysian television series produced by Les’ Copaque Production, which features the life of the twin brothers in a fictional Malaysian village. The series was first introduced in 2007 and can be considered as one of the most successful animated television series in Malaysia. However, the series represents significantly unique language, leading to a significant concern in subtitling. Hence, this article aims to investigate the errors utilized in the movie Upin and Ipin Pengembaraan Bermula. The research used Koponen’s (2010) error categories to classify the translation errors, by comparing the subtitles in the source and target texts. The study supports the findings of Rull et al. (2016) on omission and mistranslation as the common errors. It is hoped that this study could serve as a reference for other translation research on subtitling to and from other languages in Malaysia.

Abstract:
In her book Phantasmagoria, Marina Warner states a relationship between vision and mentality that “one kind of mental image was described as ‘eidetic’, referring to optical experiences that are retained in the mind’s eye with hallucinatory intensity. It comes from eidos, used by Aristotle for that which is seen, or ‘form, shape, figure’, both of something particular and of a generic kind of form, and it is related to ide in, to see, and eidolon, a shape, image, spectre, or phan-tom, also an image in mind, a vision or fancy”1.It was within a relatively short period of time— comparing with over a century long obsession of the aesthetics of superimposed moving sequences— that the discourse of animation in architecture has diverged its paradigm from analytical motion forms in the digital environment towards new possible optical experiences and atmospheric effects in physical spaces. Differing from the traditional cinematic model implemented in architectural design which stitches series of views through spatial organizations, recent investigations regarding these dynamic spatial effects have been largely inspired by mapping techniques, autonomous drawings, and hybrid mediums; or in other words- expanded operations on visuals. The long tradition of the spatiotemporal visual practice in forms of superimposed images, however, has taken on various trajectories transitioning from the static basis to animated implications. Historically used for capturing and representing motion, it is recognized identically assets of frames with discrete positions, where the animation virtually emerges from the viewer’s subconscious process of translation.

Abstract:
The advancements in fan technology are nowadays animated by two major drivers: the legal requirements that impose minimum fan efficiency grades for fans sold within European Union (and soon US and Asia), and the market request for better air performance and lower sound emissions. Within HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) applications, centrifugal fans with forward curved blades are widely used due to the higher total pressure rise capability and lower acoustic emissions with respect to more efficient backward curved blades. However the continuous rise of minimum fan efficiency grades pushes the manufacturers to develop a new generation of forward curved centrifugal fans, improving previous design. Here the challenge is not only on aerodynamics, but in the overall production process, as squirrel cage fans are characterised by a cost-effective consolidated technology, based on simple blade geometries and easy series manufacturing. For example, the blades usually have circular camber lines, as results of cut cylinders. Thus, once the number of blades and the angle at the leading edge are selected, the chord and the deflection capability are constrained as well. These concurring aspects led industry to include in the design process new tools, in particular CFD, to analyse the flow features of the current generation of fans in order to understand which phenomena are to be either controlled or exploited to increase efficiency and total pressure rise. Here we present a numerical investigation on a forward curved blade centrifugal fan for HVAC applications, to highlight the flow features inside the impeller and in the critical region of coupling with the volute. The analysis was carried out with OpenFOAM, an open-source library for CFD. Computations were performed with the frozen rotor approach and validated against available experimental data.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a network based implementation of real-time dynamic simulation methods. An interactive animated graphics environment is presented that permits the engineer to view high quality animated graphics rendering of dynamic performance, to interact with the simulation, and to study the effects of design variations, while the simulation is being carried out. An industry standard network computing system is employed to interface the parallel processor that carries out the dynamic simulation and a high speed graphics processor that creates and displays animated graphics. Multi-windowing and graphics processing methods that are employed to provide visualization and operator control of the simulation are presented. A vehicle dynamics application is used to illustrate the methods developed and to analyze communication bandwidth requirements for implementation with a compute server that is remote from the graphics workstation. It is shown that, while massive data sets are generated on the parallel processor during realtime dynamic simulation and extensive graphics data are generated on the workstation during rendering and display, data communication requirements between the compute server and the workstation are well within the capability of existing networks.

Abstract:
The objectives of this project were to develop nondestructive methods for detection of internal properties and firmness of fruits and vegetables. One method was based on a soft piezoelectric film transducer developed in the Technion, for analysis of fruit response to low-energy excitation. The second method was a dot-matrix piezoelectric transducer of North Carolina State University, developed for contact-pressure analysis of fruit during impact. Two research teams, one in Israel and the other in North Carolina, coordinated their research effort according to the specific objectives of the project, to develop and apply the two complementary methods for quality control of agricultural commodities. In Israel: An improved firmness testing system was developed and tested with tropical fruits. The new system included an instrumented fruit-bed of three flexible piezoelectric sensors and miniature electromagnetic hammers, which served as fruit support and low-energy excitation device, respectively. Resonant frequencies were detected for determination of firmness index. Two new acoustic parameters were developed for evaluation of fruit firmness and maturity: a dumping-ratio and a centeroid of the frequency response. Experiments were performed with avocado and mango fruits. The internal damping ratio, which may indicate fruit ripeness, increased monotonically with time, while resonant frequencies and firmness indices decreased with time. Fruit samples were tested daily by destructive penetration test. A fairy high correlation was found in tropical fruits between the penetration force and the new acoustic parameters; a lower correlation was found between this parameter and the conventional firmness index. Improved table-top firmness testing units, Firmalon, with data-logging system and on-line data analysis capacity have been built. The new device was used for the full-scale experiments in the next two years, ahead of the original program and BARD timetable. Close cooperation was initiated with local industry for development of both off-line and on-line sorting and quality control of more agricultural commodities. Firmalon units were produced and operated in major packaging houses in Israel, Belgium and Washington State, on mango and avocado, apples, pears, tomatoes, melons and some other fruits, to gain field experience with the new method. The accumulated experimental data from all these activities is still analyzed, to improve firmness sorting criteria and shelf-life predicting curves for the different fruits. The test program in commercial CA storage facilities in Washington State included seven apple varieties: Fuji, Braeburn, Gala, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and D'Anjou pear variety. FI master-curves could be developed for the Braeburn, Gala, Granny Smith and Jonagold apples. These fruits showed a steady ripening process during the test period. Yet, more work should be conducted to reduce scattering of the data and to determine the confidence limits of the method. Nearly constant FI in Red Delicious and the fluctuations of FI in the Fuji apples should be re-examined. Three sets of experiment were performed with Flandria tomatoes. Despite the complex structure of the tomatoes, the acoustic method could be used for firmness evaluation and to follow the ripening evolution with time. Close agreement was achieved between the auction expert evaluation and that of the nondestructive acoustic test, where firmness index of 4.0 and more indicated grade-A tomatoes. More work is performed to refine the sorting algorithm and to develop a general ripening scale for automatic grading of tomatoes for the fresh fruit market. Galia melons were tested in Israel, in simulated export conditions. It was concluded that the Firmalon is capable of detecting the ripening of melons nondestructively, and sorted out the defective fruits from the export shipment. The cooperation with local industry resulted in development of automatic on-line prototype of the acoustic sensor, that may be incorporated with the export quality control system for melons. More interesting is the development of the remote firmness sensing method for sealed CA cool-rooms, where most of the full-year fruit yield in stored for off-season consumption. Hundreds of ripening monitor systems have been installed in major fruit storage facilities, and being evaluated now by the consumers. If successful, the new method may cause a major change in long-term fruit storage technology. More uses of the acoustic test method have been considered, for monitoring fruit maturity and harvest time, testing fruit samples or each individual fruit when entering the storage facilities, packaging house and auction, and in the supermarket. This approach may result in a full line of equipment for nondestructive quality control of fruits and vegetables, from the orchard or the greenhouse, through the entire sorting, grading and storage process, up to the consumer table. The developed technology offers a tool to determine the maturity of the fruits nondestructively by monitoring their acoustic response to mechanical impulse on the tree. A special device was built and preliminary tested in mango fruit. More development is needed to develop a portable, hand operated sensing method for this purpose. In North Carolina: Analysis method based on an Auto-Regressive (AR) model was developed for detecting the first resonance of fruit from their response to mechanical impulse. The algorithm included a routine that detects the first resonant frequency from as many sensors as possible. Experiments on Red Delicious apples were performed and their firmness was determined. The AR method allowed the detection of the first resonance. The method could be fast enough to be utilized in a real time sorting machine. Yet, further study is needed to look for improvement of the search algorithm of the methods. An impact contact-pressure measurement system and Neural Network (NN) identification method were developed to investigate the relationships between surface pressure distributions on selected fruits and their respective internal textural qualities. A piezoelectric dot-matrix pressure transducer was developed for the purpose of acquiring time-sampled pressure profiles during impact. The acquired data was transferred into a personal computer and accurate visualization of animated data were presented. Preliminary test with 10 apples has been performed. Measurement were made by the contact-pressure transducer in two different positions. Complementary measurements were made on the same apples by using the Firmalon and Magness Taylor (MT) testers. Three-layer neural network was designed. 2/3 of the contact-pressure data were used as training input data and corresponding MT data as training target data. The remaining data were used as NN checking data. Six samples randomly chosen from the ten measured samples and their corresponding Firmalon values were used as the NN training and target data, respectively. The remaining four samples' data were input to the NN. The NN results consistent with the Firmness Tester values. So, if more training data would be obtained, the output should be more accurate. In addition, the Firmness Tester values do not consistent with MT firmness tester values. The NN method developed in this study appears to be a useful tool to emulate the MT Firmness test results without destroying the apple samples. To get more accurate estimation of MT firmness a much larger training data set is required. When the larger sensitive area of the pressure sensor being developed in this project becomes available, the entire contact 'shape' will provide additional information and the neural network results would be more accurate. It has been shown that the impact information can be utilized in the determination of internal quality factors of fruit. Until now,
