Abstract:
This study explores uses of metaphor and metonymy related to the concept of anger in the American television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 2012. The theoretical framework of the study is Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The data consists of metaphors and metonymies in the verbal and the pictorial mode. The pictorial data are visual expressions of the type called pictorial runes. In both modes, the underlying conceptual metaphors are identified, and the results are then compared between modes. The main finding is that the verbal mode contains a greater variety of metaphorical expressions. Explanations suggested for differences found between modes are: different technical possibilities of the two modes; universality in the pictorial mode and language specific metaphors as well as universal ones in the verbal mode; a connection of pictorial and verbal data respectively to different genres within the series; and the different narrator roles between the two modes.

Abstract:
Within contemporary modernity, media stand as a fundamental source of knowledge for individuals. This research has been conducted to analyze disability related content in a corpus comprising children animated television series. Eight characters with a chronic limitation, i.e. not being able to walk or not being able to see, have been identified within eighty-four episodes from seven series coproduced in France during the period 1990-2010 (Les Pastagums, Atout 5, Foot2Rue, Les Minijusticiers, Titeuf, Bali, Milo). They have been observed through the successive situations they appear in, the problems they encounter and the proposed solutions. They are mainly boys using a wheelchair and involved in physical activities. Most of them are treated differently in comparison to other characters in the same social virtual worlds and are portrayed through heroized participation, either as a supercrip or as a superhero. They are both physically powerful and socially skilled. Such treatment contains the frozen remains of a normative injunction of performance as a legitimate and hegemonic modality with respect to participation, the construction of self and social relations

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a sociohistorical analysis of gender representations in French animated television series. In analysing the programming strategy of television networks and the adaptation and rerun phenomena, the research reveals a structural tension between standardisation and innovation, as well as backlash effects. Indeed, these programs have generally conveyed a binary and essentialist conception of gender, minimizing female characters and confining them to secondary and caretaking roles. Nonetheless, following contemporary social changes, some productions have begun to challenge gender norms. 56 programs broadcast between 1957 and 2014 have been selected for this qualitative analysis. In 2015-2016, 11 comprehensive interviews were conducted with professionals as well as a fieldwork on the association Les Femmes s’Animent (the French counterpart of Women in Animation). This new angle helps to understand how the issue of gender inequalities is perceived by different professionals in the French animation industry (such as writers, producers, animators and television networks). While some of them try to fight against gender stereotypes, organisational and economic constraints as well as social norms related to child protection continue to impact the production of animated series

Abstract:
The question about the treatment that human beings must give to animals has been current since the emergence of the first civilizations. Whereas some societies develop thinking schemes in which the role of these beings was to serve human needs, another ones, from its origins, have regarded that all being, whether human or not, ought to be respected. Nowadays it is a common attitude to asume that animals are only means in order to satisfy, from the most elementary to the most trivial human needs. The food industry takes the lives of thousand of marine as well as terrestrial animalas every single day in order to supply the excesive demand of meat consumption. In the field of biomedical, industrial and military reserach, it is estimated that between 50 and 60 millions are used yearly in order to carry out laboratory experiments The traffic of wild species stolen from its hábitat, poaching for sporting or comercial purposes, runs and shows with aquatic animals among others, as well as the irresponsible abandonment of dogs and cats, which causes the overpopulation of these species. Not to mention the impact that the way of life of people has, where it is estimated that in a short period of time a considerable percentage of the species will have dissapeared from the planet. The foregoing makes evident the reification of the animal, where its value is determined by the benefit and economic retribution it represents for human beings. These forms of abuse and instrumentalization denote the absence of any moral questioning that makes these attitudes permisible. But, above all, the lack of respect for animals that leads to kill and make a large number of them suffer. The present investigation has as purpose to offer a perspective about if the human beings have duties with respect to the rights of the animals and if so, to what rights and duties is appealed. For this, three of the most representatives positions of the current debate have been analyzed: Tom Reagan’s deontological position, Peter Singer’s utilitarian one and and the one proposed by Martha Nussbaum the so called capacities approach. In addition to addressing other related issues such as Nature’s rights, as well as going through into the west’s philosophical and religious discourse in search of dissenting voices that since ancient times have contributed to build, along with some eastern doctrines, the tradition of respect toward animals.

Abstract:
Although animated sitcom fiction has always been the focus of researchers analysis, historical studies about animated series aired on TV are still scarce. Moreover, whether researchers have investigated animated sitcoms, it was not with the intention of discussing their relation to the images of Brazil and Brazilians conveyed both on TV and the Internet. Because of that the object of study of this thesis is the discussion of socio-historical-political dimensions in The Simpsons , a profitable animated sitcom and a satirical parody of a working class American lifestyle family, whose episodes have been aired on Brazil and all over the world s TV channels for more than two decades. Therefore, the corpus of this investigation is some of the series episodes, notably Blame it on Lisa during which the fictional family travels to Brazil. With the objective of bringing to light the representations of Brazil in the last decades the research makes use of the internauts speech acts of which emerge their critical discourse construction of the The Simpsons. The Internet, an interesting locus to reveal Brazil and its relation to the American production of series, is also used not only in an attempt to define simpsonized language and discuss the (re)signification of Brazil s imagery as created by the internauts, but also to put to question concepts such as family, childhood, criminality, violence, sexuality in children s programs and the lampooning of Brazilian identity symbols, always treated in an unflattering or negative light, in the search for larger audiences (Top 30 ratings) and for money, categories also selected for the development of this work. Still, anthropophagy, a category largely used in Brazilian literary (con)texts in the beginning of the XX century, supported the analysis of internauts and actual viewers perception of the series as a point of departure for helping engender behavior and attitudes that can help rebuild realities, via massive media, even if inspired by The Simpsons, and mainly based upon criticism revealed by the episode Blame it in Lisa. On the one hand, the text attests the capacity of Brazilians, by means of using communicative technologies, for reacting against the negative satirical portrait of Brazil and Brazilians and on the other, for rescuing this image, even if utilizing that simpsonized language . Research leads to the conclusion that Brazilian internauts and actual viewers do not watch The Simpsons passively but stand up against the unflattering insinuations in relation to Brazilian culture, society, history, folklore, Brazil and the Brazilian people, and try to rescue those images conveyed by the sitcom episodes, especially the ones in Blame it on Lisa . And yet, the text evidences that certain images of Brazil and Brazilians represented in the animated sitcom expresses the troublesome reality of truthfully and because of that they have become one of the thesis concerns and another significant aspect to be considered. Such images are the reason for the investigator s raising relevant questions and his strongly suggesting accurate reflection and discussion on such a matter.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis aims at analysing gender and male and female teacher representations by animated television series “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy” and “Rugrats”, especially considering their association with humour. We have used the poststructuralist Cultural Studies perspective with the help from other study fields such as communication and Lacanian psychoanalysis. For this objective we have selected, transcribed and analysed episodes of the films presented between 1991 and 2010 in channels CartooNetwork and Nickelodeon. Reflections have sought to examine representations of characters, especially children’s, linking them to concepts of gender, power, transgression, school, and others linked to them. When treating these questions, we have stressed on the use of humour as a potential textual tool, a device animated television series use to create stereotypes producing the infant-subject. Concerning gender, the key movement of this work was towards visibility for power relations shaped there, some by transgression, some by frailty. Concerning school and teacher representations, we have found some ruptures with the ‘established’ female teacher figure (affectionate, devoted and motherly). However, school and education representations are not different from the traditional model of the modern school, including serialisation, time and space organisation, stressing on content and grade evaluation. In other educational spaces we have analysed in particular episodes, there are clear relations of power, government and control. In sum, we have observed that, in discourses in the particular child-directed animated series, it is possible to view stereotypes producing male and female subjectivities, which act as cultural pedagogies.

This paper will examine, how queer is represented in the animated tv-serie She-Ra and the princesses of powerfrom 2018-2020. To understand this work, the paper will define representation, gender and queer, and examine the visual and narrative elements in the tv-serie. Through a visual analysis, the paper can understand if the serie represent queer values. Then the paper will look at some characters from the serie, to see if their visual design and the narrative structure reflects queer characteristics. This means the paper will define what are queer values and how is it shown in the characters of the show. It will be supplied with theory about queer and gender, for examples Raewyn Connell and Stuart Hall. The theory will supply characteristics, which have defined the social norms about genders through history. This paper concludes that the tv-serie reflects queer values through it’s visual and narrative structure. The characters have queer personalities. I need this paper with a discussion of the effects of queer representation and other ways to look at the serie from a perspective of gender.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Antimicrobial resistance is a major and global public health concern. In this context, the research problem was to provide decision support to the risk manager for the implementation and assessment of control measures in animal health. To limit and manage the phenomenon, we must know the dynamic of its evolution: the surveillance is therefore a key element in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. At first, using a population survey and a sociological approach, this research determined to what extent the data collected by the French surveillance network of antimicrobial resistance in diseased animals (RESAPATH) could be used to answer the research problem. Since the representativeness and the coverage of the RESAPATH were considered satisfactory, surveillance data were used to characterize the dynamics of the resistances and generalized additive models were developed. The comparison of resistance trends and control measures underscored the positive impact of changes in practices on the evolution of resistances. Finally, in the context of the ‘One Health’ concept that advocates an integrated and collaborative approach to health, the parallel was drawn between resistances in isolates from animals and humans. Data from the French surveillance network of antimicrobial resistance of bacteria isolated in community (MedQual) were analysed. Resistance dynamics were specific to each species. These results advocate that the efforts to fight antimicrobial resistance must be carried in all sectors and for all species, both in human and veterinary medicine

Abstract:
This study analyses the presence of more-than-human beings, particularly animal figurations, in two works of diverse literary genres, namely: the poem “The albatross”(1861) by Charles Baudelaire and the short story “The house of Asterion”(1947) by Jorge Luis Borges through the lens of theories on the animal turn. Previous studies on both the poem and the short story analyzed the animal (albatross and minotaur) in allegorical or metaphorical terms emphasizing a human-centered perspective. However, this study maps an encounter between voice (human and hybrid) and the more-than-human being beyond rhetorical figures, that is, seeking material and affective sites of contact that speak of a continuum between entities deemed ontologically different. Analyzing the mentioned literary works through Guarramuño`s concept of worlds in common, in both the poem and the short story, we identify that certain aspects of the voice act as a shared space in which the materiality of the more-than-human being encounters the human and in which both beings exhibit a common affective pattern. Subsequently, through Derrida`s idea of distance-closenesswe analyze aspects of the voices that cross the animal-human border, where the language is revealed as a false superiority with respect to other forms of communication beyond the human word. In this respect, the analysis reveals an affective zone where uncertainty marks the encounter between human and animal, bringing closer animal an human domains. Our study revealsthat, both in the poem and the short story, however precarious and limited, the encounter between human voices and animal can be said to go beyond rhetorical figures. Indeed, this encounter reveales in this study as an affective continuum in the relationship between voices and more-than-human beings, which questions the opposition human-animal and therefore the superiority of the human regarding other sentient beings

Abstract:
Precision livestock farming consists of recording parameters on the animals or their environment using various sensors. In this thesis, the aim is to monitor the behaviour of dairy cows via a real-time localisation system. The data are collected in a sequence of values at regular intervals, a so-called time series. The problems associated with the use of sensors are the large amount of data generated and the quality of this data. The Machine Learning (ML) helps to alleviate this problem. The aim of this thesis is to detect abnormal cow behaviour. The working hypothesis, supported by the biological literature, is that the circadian rhythm of a cow's activity changes if it goes from a normal state to a state of disease, stress or a specific physiological stage (oestrus, farrowing) at a very early stage. The detection of a behavioural anomaly would allow decisions to be taken more quickly in breeding. To do this, there are Time Series Classification (TSC) tools. The problem with behavioural data is that the so-called normal behavioural pattern of the cow varies from cow to cow, day to day, farm to farm, season to season, and so on. Finding a common normal pattern to all cows is therefore impossible. However, most TSC tools rely on learning a global model to define whether a given behaviour is close to this model or not. This thesis is structured around two major contributions. The first one is the development of a new TSC method: FBAT. It is based on Fourier transforms to identify a pattern of activity over 24 hours and compare it to another consecutive 24-hour period, in order to overcome the problem of the lack of a common pattern in a normal cow. The second contribution is the use of fuzzy labels. Indeed, around the days considered abnormal, it is possible to define an uncertain area where the cow would be in an intermediate state. We show that fuzzy logic improves results when labels are uncertain and we introduce a fuzzy variant of FBAT: F-FBAT

Andrade, Jose Maria Richardson Rebello de. "Optimization of facial rigs for low budget production animated series." Master's thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/16681.

Full text
Abstract:
Optimization of facial rigs for low budget production animated series is the name of a Master's degree dissertation that presents rigging as being a process of designing and building a set of controllers to facilitate animation. It begins with the modeling of the character, and it is the first step in the animation process. This study attempts to find tendencies in the movement of the human face in order to create a facial animation rig that permits one to animate very quickly when under pressure, but, perhaps, because of this, compromising the versatility of the movements to a certain extent. Initially this dissertation exposes the historical, theoretical, technical and artistic context. The main topics of this chapter are: - the superficial anatomy of the human face ( bones and muscles); - facial expressions of emotion and acting; - 3D modeling, rigging and animation (mostly related to the face); - examples of studies by other artists and riggers. Later, the study presents the production phases of a film called Ptolmus, where the optimization of a facial rig for a low budget production series is given emphasis. It also presents the inspirations for the rig. The software used is Blender, since it is an open source software (free), unlike most popular commercial 3D creation packages. This facial rig built for the film is a proof of concept. The final result works well, although it could possibly continue being improved. This study can not be considered finished, for better ideas and tools emerge regularly in this growing field (3D animation).

Abstract:
A Research Report submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree of Masters of Arts in Digital Animation at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits School of Art) Johannesburg, South Africa 12 October 2015
This research report aims to encourage the research, development and production of interactive educational animated series in southern Africa such as the highly successful US series Dora the Explorer, specifically to teach southern African languages. Over the years mediums of imparting knowledge to children have changed rapidly (mainly due to ever-evolving technology), but the fact that children learn best when they are having fun has remained constant. Animation has been a leader in children’s entertainment as it has the power of expanding their imaginations and at the same time captures their attention. Animated series such as Dora the Explorer and Blues Clues have been popular with preschool children and impart valuable lessons. Dora the Explorer in particular helps children learn Spanish as a second language. The research takes a look at how children acquire a second language and how animation can aid the process of learning. Various theories on how children learn reveal the link between language, age and play. It is revealed that during production, careful consideration of content is required for educational animation to be an effective learning aid. This leads to the discovery of Richard Mayer’s principles that are recommended to be considered when creating effective educational animation. Included is a comparative analysis of the development processes of successful US children’s educational animated series to similar southern African productions. The research aims to inform the possible creation of an educational interactive animated series to enhance second language development for preschool children.

The main propose of this study is to evaluate the effect of anti-corruption marketing with multimedia- the Yameme Animated Series in Civic and Law-Related Education. Quasi-experimental Design is applied to fourth-grade classes from an elementary school. For the purpose of this study, the classes are divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group is then further divided into three groups: group I watched two series of the Yameme Animated Series in Civic and Law-Related Education; group II watched three series while group III watched four series. The control group watched cartoon that is unrelated to anti-corruption. Students in all groups had a pre-test before watching the cartoon film, and had a post-test right after they finished watching cartoon film. The research questions addressed in this study as follow: (1) Whether elementary school students accessing anti-corruption stimulus will benefit them in building the concept of anti-corruption. (2)Whether elementary school students accessing lots of extent stimulus will have improved concept of anti-corruption than those who accessing less. (3)Whether elementary school students’ personal background (such as gender or being a class leader) will affect them in building the concept of anti-corruption. In short, the main conclusions are including: First of all, depending on the content of cartoon film they had watched, experimental group which accessing anti-corruption stimulus not only learn much more than control group, but also obtain different domains of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor of anti-corruption. Furthermore, groups which accessing lots of extent stimulus had superior concept of anti-corruption than those accessing less. In addition, gender and the experience of being a class leader will influence elementary school students on building the concept of anti-corruption to a certain extent.
