Full textWithin contemporary modernity, media stand as a fundamental source of knowledge for individuals. This research has been conducted to analyze disability related content in a corpus comprising children animated television series. Eight characters with a chronic limitation, i.e. not being able to walk or not being able to see, have been identified within eighty-four episodes from seven series coproduced in France during the period 1990-2010 (Les Pastagums, Atout 5, Foot2Rue, Les Minijusticiers, Titeuf, Bali, Milo). They have been observed through the successive situations they appear in, the problems they encounter and the proposed solutions. They are mainly boys using a wheelchair and involved in physical activities. Most of them are treated differently in comparison to other characters in the same social virtual worlds and are portrayed through heroized participation, either as a supercrip or as a superhero. They are both physically powerful and socially skilled. Such treatment contains the frozen remains of a normative injunction of performance as a legitimate and hegemonic modality with respect to participation, the construction of self and social relations

Full textThis thesis proposes a sociohistorical analysis of gender representations in French animated television series. In analysing the programming strategy of television networks and the adaptation and rerun phenomena, the research reveals a structural tension between standardisation and innovation, as well as backlash effects. Indeed, these programs have generally conveyed a binary and essentialist conception of gender, minimizing female characters and confining them to secondary and caretaking roles. Nonetheless, following contemporary social changes, some productions have begun to challenge gender norms. 56 programs broadcast between 1957 and 2014 have been selected for this qualitative analysis. In 2015-2016, 11 comprehensive interviews were conducted with professionals as well as a fieldwork on the association Les Femmes s’Animent (the French counterpart of Women in Animation). This new angle helps to understand how the issue of gender inequalities is perceived by different professionals in the French animation industry (such as writers, producers, animators and television networks). While some of them try to fight against gender stereotypes, organisational and economic constraints as well as social norms related to child protection continue to impact the production of animated series

This thesis aims at analysing gender and male and female teacher representations by animated television series “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy” and “Rugrats”, especially considering their association with humour. We have used the poststructuralist Cultural Studies perspective with the help from other study fields such as communication and Lacanian psychoanalysis. For this objective we have selected, transcribed and analysed episodes of the films presented between 1991 and 2010 in channels CartooNetwork and Nickelodeon. Reflections have sought to examine representations of characters, especially children’s, linking them to concepts of gender, power, transgression, school, and others linked to them. When treating these questions, we have stressed on the use of humour as a potential textual tool, a device animated television series use to create stereotypes producing the infant-subject. Concerning gender, the key movement of this work was towards visibility for power relations shaped there, some by transgression, some by frailty. Concerning school and teacher representations, we have found some ruptures with the ‘established’ female teacher figure (affectionate, devoted and motherly). However, school and education representations are not different from the traditional model of the modern school, including serialisation, time and space organisation, stressing on content and grade evaluation. In other educational spaces we have analysed in particular episodes, there are clear relations of power, government and control. In sum, we have observed that, in discourses in the particular child-directed animated series, it is possible to view stereotypes producing male and female subjectivities, which act as cultural pedagogies.

Full textAntimicrobial resistance is a major and global public health concern. In this context, the research problem was to provide decision support to the risk manager for the implementation and assessment of control measures in animal health. To limit and manage the phenomenon, we must know the dynamic of its evolution: the surveillance is therefore a key element in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. At first, using a population survey and a sociological approach, this research determined to what extent the data collected by the French surveillance network of antimicrobial resistance in diseased animals (RESAPATH) could be used to answer the research problem. Since the representativeness and the coverage of the RESAPATH were considered satisfactory, surveillance data were used to characterize the dynamics of the resistances and generalized additive models were developed. The comparison of resistance trends and control measures underscored the positive impact of changes in practices on the evolution of resistances. Finally, in the context of the ‘One Health’ concept that advocates an integrated and collaborative approach to health, the parallel was drawn between resistances in isolates from animals and humans. Data from the French surveillance network of antimicrobial resistance of bacteria isolated in community (MedQual) were analysed. Resistance dynamics were specific to each species. These results advocate that the efforts to fight antimicrobial resistance must be carried in all sectors and for all species, both in human and veterinary medicine

Full textPrecision livestock farming consists of recording parameters on the animals or their environment using various sensors. In this thesis, the aim is to monitor the behaviour of dairy cows via a real-time localisation system. The data are collected in a sequence of values at regular intervals, a so-called time series. The problems associated with the use of sensors are the large amount of data generated and the quality of this data. The Machine Learning (ML) helps to alleviate this problem. The aim of this thesis is to detect abnormal cow behaviour. The working hypothesis, supported by the biological literature, is that the circadian rhythm of a cow's activity changes if it goes from a normal state to a state of disease, stress or a specific physiological stage (oestrus, farrowing) at a very early stage. The detection of a behavioural anomaly would allow decisions to be taken more quickly in breeding. To do this, there are Time Series Classification (TSC) tools. The problem with behavioural data is that the so-called normal behavioural pattern of the cow varies from cow to cow, day to day, farm to farm, season to season, and so on. Finding a common normal pattern to all cows is therefore impossible. However, most TSC tools rely on learning a global model to define whether a given behaviour is close to this model or not. This thesis is structured around two major contributions. The first one is the development of a new TSC method: FBAT. It is based on Fourier transforms to identify a pattern of activity over 24 hours and compare it to another consecutive 24-hour period, in order to overcome the problem of the lack of a common pattern in a normal cow. The second contribution is the use of fuzzy labels. Indeed, around the days considered abnormal, it is possible to define an uncertain area where the cow would be in an intermediate state. We show that fuzzy logic improves results when labels are uncertain and we introduce a fuzzy variant of FBAT: F-FBAT

This purpose of this thesis is to focus on the semiotics of The Little Prince (2010 TV series), a significant adaptation of classic french literature. The analysis explores the visual language between the adaptation and audiences. Visual trend defines the way of information culture, the flow of images conveys rapidly in modern society and it also makes for amusing reading. How people interpret the symbols in visual culture is already an important issue. As a part of cultural, the visual media take responsibility of education and Information transfer. Therefore, it is necessity to study the visual style and cultural implications in The Little Prince (2010 TV series). The article was based on the narrative structure of the story, comparison method, and textual analysis. In addition, the Pierce semiotic theory primarily applied on visual symbols of the 24-planet. The summary of the thesis clarified a good adaptation has the following four characteristics: relevant culture background with audiences, follow the essence of narrative structure, affluent aesthetics principle, and inherent spiritual value in novel adaptation. Through the contribution of this thesis, it provided suggestions for creators woring on the literature adapted into visual works, and also for researchers who study with visual semiotic in the future.

This study focused on the use of buzzwords in the English-Chinese film subtitle translation. The purposes of the study are: (1) To investigate the usage of buzzwords as applied to subtitles translation in animated film series “Madagascar”. (2) To analyze what categories of buzzwords are applied in the film subtitling of “Madagascar”. The research mainly focused on the buzzwords that were being used to translate the subtitles of “Madagascar” in the Taiwan official versions and the Chinese fansubbing versions. This study employed comparative analysis, with six buzzword categories “Multiplicity”, “Colloquialism”, “Homonym”, “Dialect”, “Keyword”, and “Mixture of Chinese and English” for the analysis of the subtitles. The present study found that (1) In the Taiwan versions, buzzwords were more frequently used in animated film series “Madagascar” than in the China. (2) In the Taiwan versions, five categories of buzzwords were used to translate the subtitle of the film “Madagascar”, among which, the categories “Dialect” and “Colloquialism” were the most frequently used buzzwords. In comparison, in the China versions, four buzzword categories were used in the “Madagascar” subtitle translation. (3) According to the findings, a new buzzword category “Imported Words” was found in both the Taiwan and China versions of the films series “Madagascar”.
Dongo, Claire. "The use of interactive educational animated series to enhance second language development in preschool children." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/19944.
Full textThis research report aims to encourage the research, development and production of interactive educational animated series in southern Africa such as the highly successful US series Dora the Explorer, specifically to teach southern African languages. Over the years mediums of imparting knowledge to children have changed rapidly (mainly due to ever-evolving technology), but the fact that children learn best when they are having fun has remained constant. Animation has been a leader in children’s entertainment as it has the power of expanding their imaginations and at the same time captures their attention. Animated series such as Dora the Explorer and Blues Clues have been popular with preschool children and impart valuable lessons. Dora the Explorer in particular helps children learn Spanish as a second language. The research takes a look at how children acquire a second language and how animation can aid the process of learning. Various theories on how children learn reveal the link between language, age and play. It is revealed that during production, careful consideration of content is required for educational animation to be an effective learning aid. This leads to the discovery of Richard Mayer’s principles that are recommended to be considered when creating effective educational animation. Included is a comparative analysis of the development processes of successful US children’s educational animated series to similar southern African productions. The research aims to inform the possible creation of an educational interactive animated series to enhance second language development for preschool children.

The main propose of this study is to evaluate the effect of anti-corruption marketing with multimedia- the Yameme Animated Series in Civic and Law-Related Education. Quasi-experimental Design is applied to fourth-grade classes from an elementary school. For the purpose of this study, the classes are divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group is then further divided into three groups: group I watched two series of the Yameme Animated Series in Civic and Law-Related Education; group II watched three series while group III watched four series. The control group watched cartoon that is unrelated to anti-corruption. Students in all groups had a pre-test before watching the cartoon film, and had a post-test right after they finished watching cartoon film. The research questions addressed in this study as follow: (1) Whether elementary school students accessing anti-corruption stimulus will benefit them in building the concept of anti-corruption. (2)Whether elementary school students accessing lots of extent stimulus will have improved concept of anti-corruption than those who accessing less. (3)Whether elementary school students’ personal background (such as gender or being a class leader) will affect them in building the concept of anti-corruption. In short, the main conclusions are including: First of all, depending on the content of cartoon film they had watched, experimental group which accessing anti-corruption stimulus not only learn much more than control group, but also obtain different domains of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor of anti-corruption. Furthermore, groups which accessing lots of extent stimulus had superior concept of anti-corruption than those accessing less. In addition, gender and the experience of being a class leader will influence elementary school students on building the concept of anti-corruption to a certain extent.

In the second chapter of the master's thesis, the general characteristics of animated series are given, and a study of consumer preferences for animated brands is conducted. The survey revealed which cartoon series consumers prefer, which publishing products based on animated TV series they prefer, and which criteria for the target audience are central to the acquisition of this publishing product. The survey results were divided by age indicators of the target audience into three groups. On the basis of the respondents' answers, criteria of first, second and third degree of importance are determined. Separate provisions of the study were presented at the international scientific-practical conference "Book Business: Achievements, Problems, Prospects - VI", held in April 2017.
