If an animated film wants to present extraordinary visual effects, the successful use of art colors is the key to the success or failure of an animated film. Although our country’s animated film started a short time ago, its development has been slow. Full text
Abstract:
This chapter moves forward by unpacking the generic identity of computer-animated films and examines the journey narrative structure as their prevailing syntax and first line of action. In this chapter, two forms of narrative are established that are widely operational within the genre. The first of these are the “flushed away” narratives that rely upon on abrupt geographical disjuncture, and which often requires the protagonist to negotiate and quickly adapt to a foreign milieu. The second journey narrative form advanced in this chapter is the “over the hedge” narrative, which are voyages signalled as altogether more prepared or expected. This chapter explores in detail how computer-animated films deploy these two forms of journey narrative structure to interrogate ideas of mobility, location, destination and tourism through the virtual experiences they offer of travelled space. Chapter Two concludes by positioning the journey narrative within the context of film franchising and the “sequelled” narrative. Computer-animated films rarely exists in isolation, but are supported by a range of sequels, spin-offs and short films. This chapter identifies how narrative structure can be productively entwined with the wider role of film series and cycles that continues to define the franchise mentality of post-millennial Hollywood cinema.

Abstract:
The year 1929 is often seen as marking the end of silent film. “The secret afterlife of silent film” questions this date, demonstrating how that year only signaled the end of production in major studios in the United States. Once the technology for synchronization and amplification became available, the transition to sound in the motion picture industry was smoother than is often depicted. Silent film production continued in pockets around the globe until nearly the middle of the century, as did silent film exhibition. Elements of silent film persist even in the early twenty-first century, from avant-garde to animated films. Silent film is still beloved by critics and cinephiles, and the innovations of the silent period arguably contribute to the ongoing appeal of cinema itself.

The chapter concludes with Bradbury’s work on two unrealized science fiction film projects, a proposed remake of the 1950s classic Forbidden Planet and short-lived plans for a sequel to The Day the Earth Stood Still. Abstract:
Film scholars often compare the structure of films to fairy tales and fables. These both typically have four main parts: a setup, a complication, a development, and a climax. This chapter discusses in detail the Disney animated short Paperman (2012), which has four parts of roughly the same length. Heretofore, only film theorists and practitioners have discussed these parts, but an experiment with average viewers shows that they agree quite well with professional assessments. This chapter then considers the psychological underpinnings of these roughly 20- to 35-minute units. The closest thing in psychology is found in vigilance experiments. After such intervals, performance in detecting rare objects declines. Movie producers and theater owners know that if nothing much happens in a movie after about 20 minutes, the audience with begin to squirm. Thus, these two intervals many be aligned. Changes are necessary for an audience’s sustained attention to the narrative.

Abstract:
An inscription on a Chinese statue of Amitabha dated 746 AD reads, “As a matter of general principle, the highest truth is devoid of any image. But if there were no image, there would be no possibility for truth to manifest itself. The highest principle is without words. But if there were no words, how could the principle be known?” From the point of view of an art historian and through the example of a short animated film proposal, this essay investigates the ways in which strategies specific to animation, such as narrativity, metaphorical potency, metamorphosis, and most importantly, the capacity to penetrate intangible dimensions, mitigate these challenges. The author argues that animation offers a more efficacious medium than static images and theory in evincing Buddhist dharma; namely, that in the process of depicting Buddhist thought and practice, both the activity and product of animation become sites of merit-making and means of spiritual transformation in themselves.

Abstract:
Seven short animated films are examined by the auteur-animator as he self-reflects on their creations. Making animation is not only an extension of the pictorial and comic-like expression, but also the act of mystically creating movement to be perceived in the real. The artist shares his personal experiences during the animation making process including the unconscious imaginative realm that creeps into his creative thoughts. Technology may play an important part of the animation production but the author maintains that there is a deeper spiritual world where he is somehow drawn into when he is making animation. Spiritually, he feels the transcendence of the dualism of mind and matter during the creative process, and is able to unite the subconscious with reality. Citing motifs including natural, inorganic, or imaginative entities, the author demonstrates the influence of the psyche in his artistic expressions. To the artist, the spiritual assimilation aspects of his work are profound, complex, and illuminating.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter Nea Ehrlich proposes that the contemporary fascination with animated documentary stems from animated non-fiction’s challenging of traditionally perceived differences between animation and photography as seminal modern and postmodern visual media. In tandem with the huge proliferation of animated documentaries since 2008, there has also been a significant rise in the creative practice, academic study, and distribution of this medium. This chapter explains why this shift in visual culture is occurring now, and how it shapes viewership. Ehrlich advances a case for understanding animated documentary’s increasing contemporary usage and perceived credibility by exploring the wider context of animation’s use within news media. These range from daily news broadcasts made by the Taiwanese broadcaster Next Media Animation through to investigative short films produced by the UK’s Guardian newspaper. Ehrlich reflects upon different modes of representation that many deem “more real” and believable as legitimate documentation than traditionally privileged photographic and journalistic tools and strategies.
