Repair and remodeling of bone during healing and fusion require a combination of bone resorption and formation to successfully restore the bone to its previous strength. The healing process is highly responsive to the mechanical conditions of the construct, where excessive loading can cause high strains that delay healing, but moderate loading can be beneficial. Maintaining compression at the site of fracture can benefit healing by maintaining bone congruency and increasing the stability of the bone-implant construct to prevent excessive shifting. For these reasons, compressive mechanisms a

An ultra-short echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence was used together with other MRI sequences to evaluate the possibility of segmenting air, soft tissues and bone. Three patients were imaged with the UTE sequence and other sequences as well as with computed tomography (CT). An algorithm using Gaussian mixture models was developed and applied to the problem of segmenting the MR images. A similar algorithm was developed and used to generate an artificial CT image from the MR data. The images of the first patient were used as training data for the algorithms and the images o

Paper is used in a wide range of applications, each of which has specific requirements on mechanical and surface properties. The role of paper strength on paper performance is still not well understood. This work addresses the mechanical properties of paper by utilizing fiber network simulation and consists of two parts. In the first part, we use a three-dimensional model of a network of fibers to describe the fracture process of paper accounting for nonlinearities at the fiber level (material model and geometry) and bond failures. This PhD thesis presents the synthesis and microstructure characterisation of Ca-fluoroaluminosilicate (CFAS) glasses, fluorapatite glass-ceramics and glass-ionomer cements (GICs) for bone and dental restoration. The first part of the thesis presents the crystallographic, chemical and thermal characterisation of starting waste materials. CO2-sequestration was exploited to convert aluminium cans to aluminas. The microstructures of aluminas were investigated using a SEM-EDX and SANS. The effects of heat treatment on the phase transformation of oyster shells and rice husk ash are also reported.
