Abstract:
Typically polyneuropathy will cause the combination of distal limb muscle weakness, loss of tendon reflexes, and reduced distal limb sensation. There is variable involvement of the autonomic innervation, damage to which causes a dry, vasodilated foot or hand. Loss of tendon reflexes is a cardinal sign of polyneuropathy, often restricted to the ankle jerks in axonal degeneration, but involving more proximal reflexes in acquired demyelinating neuropathies which may involve more proximal segments or the nerve roots. Plantar flexion and/or extension weakness is usually neuromuscular in nature. Rarely, focal foot dystonia, ankle arthritis, and spasticity lead to diagnostic confusion. Progressive painless weakness of the foot flexion and extension with normal sensation and brisk deep tendon reflexes are typically seen in ALS. Sensory symptoms are the most common symptoms in neuromuscular clinics, yet it is hard to capture them via video unless they have a very specific pattern and they are associated with objective loss of sensation. Distal sensory loss is a common neuropathic finding. It follows gloves and stocks distribution. Sensory neuropathies may present with ataxia which results in falls, or severe pain. Neuropathic pain with normal ankle reflexes and sural responses suggest small fiber neuropathy. Multifocal sensory loss is usually vascular. It can also be infectious (leprosy). Nowadays there is a great enthusiasm for the Spinozan conception of the union of mind and body among modern researchers, such as Damasio. The fact that the Spinozan model has become very relevant is an opportunity to reflect on the impact and value of these references to Spinoza, which historians of philosophy eye with caution because they are all too often based on second-hand knowledge, and frequently distort the philosopher's thought. That is why it is crucial to reexamine the question of the mind-body relationship and its affective modalities in Spinoza from a philosophical angle and ident

Arterial diseases are heavily intertwined with atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease and the presence of both symptomatic and asymptomatic peripheral artery diseases is known to affect the rate of cardiovascular events and deaths. Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in selected populations is also a major issue for the cardiologist. Additionally, intima-media thickness and ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurements, screening for carotid or femoral plaques, and new techniques looking at the rigidity and elasticity of arteries may further help with risk stratification, especially i

It is a personal homage of an international circle of friends and students, which – oriented on three major research interests if the jubilant: constitution, public welfare and peace – discusses fundamental questions of the constitutional state. Facing the current challenges of liberal political orders through authoritarianism and populism, the volume´s contributions stand up resolutely for a “culture of the constitution”, oriented towards the common good, aga

Is Plato’s philosophy still relevant for current issues in politics and political science? In order to answer this question, the contributions to this volume endeavour to re-read the Platonic dialogues and to interpret them in terms of textual hermeneutics on the one hand. On the other hand, they refer to Plato from a systematic point of view and apply his philosophy, in particular the method of Socratic dialogue, to discussions on contemporary political issues. The volume is dedicated to Barbara Zehnpfennig, whose works aim at making Socratic–Platonic philosophy fruitful for the present on th

Doctor Who has been on global television screens for nearly fifty years, and many of its most memorable protagonists have been its monsters, The Daleks, Cybermen, Slitheen, the Sonterans, Ood, Wiirrn, and others. Entertainingly and provocatively written, and introduced by Who scriptwriter Paul Cornell, The Doctor s Monsters takes a new look at these and many other creatures, and asks what inspired them and what lies behind them. If the Daleks are based on ideas of genetic purity, and the Cybermen on fears of transplant surgery, what about the Autons, the Zarbi, or the Weeping Angels? Science f

Abstract This book guides social researchers and instructors in the practice of interpretive research. Interpretivism has an intuitive appeal to many social researchers, but they often feel ill-equipped to do it. Other social researchers tend to believe that interpretivism is a specialized niche with little relevance to their research practice. What has been lost is the awareness that interpretation is an explanatory logic and form of inquiry that is at the root of all social science research, including quantitative research. This book enables readers to better understand, reflect on, and impr

The method of analysis is, as usual in what I write, a mélange. I have resorted to identity studies, cultural studies, visual studies, iconology, space and city studies, interculturalism, as well as gender or minority studies. Also, psychology or sociology cannot be missing from an interest that is, primarily, in human identity and culture. This blended approach is the one I consider the most suitable, because I have always been of the opinion that the logic of the tools is, and/or should be, dictated by the elements that are present in the object of the study.
