Abstract:
A study and comparison of works by two creators of ritual performance—Anna Halprin and Lin Lee-Chen—provide insight into Richard Schechner's efficacy-entertainment continuum as well as how ritual manifests in contemporary performance. Through a close reading of the structure and performance quality of Lin's Miroirs de Vie (Jiao) and Halprin's Circle the Earth “Dancing with Life on the Line,” I look at both artist's efforts and results in creating ritual performance and illustrate what I believe to be their distinctive features. Contextualization of the work and the artists' intentions shed light on the possibility or scope of change effected by their creations. While Lin's highly stylized large-scale dance-dramas in many senses cannot be compared to Halprin's nature-oriented participatory community rituals, commonalities in these two works show a strong emphasis on bodily experience, indicating embodiment as fundamental in creating transformative performance.

Sui, Qianyu, and Qianyu Sui. "Anna May Wong and Hazel Ying Lee--Two Second Generation Chinese American Women in World War II." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/12440.

Abstract:
Applying a historical approach which contextualizes ethnic and gender perspectives, this thesis investigates the obstacles that second-generation Chinese American women encountered as they moved into the public sphere. This included sexual restraints at home and racial harassment outside. This study examines, as well, the opportunities that stimulated these women to break from their confinements. Anna May Wong and Hazel Ying Lee will serve as two role models among this second generation of women who successfully combined their cultural heritage with their education in the U.S. Their contributions inspired a whole generation of young bi-cultural women of their time. I will argue that, although the second generation had gone through cultural acculturation and resistance toward American mainstream culture, they constructed their new Chinese American identity during World War II through a synthesis of their contribution to the gender relations and ethnic identification in nationalist project.

Abstract:
The investigation concerns a 1982 suit brought by Texas novelist Benjamin Capps and his publishers against the author and publisher of an historical novel, Sacajawea, alleging that the book contained approximately 145 instances of copyright infringement. Parallel-column exhibits of passages from the novel by Anna Lee Waldo and from Capps's writings illustrate the evidence submitted in court. The publishing history of the novel, brought out by Avon Books, is related, as well as the story of readers' discoveries of suspicious material and the ultimate litigation. A comparison is made of the original novel and a revised edition published in 1984. Using the Sacajawea case as a reference point, the study considers the state of ethics in the contemporary literary world.

Full text
Abstract:
The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, or the Shakers, are a small progressive communal religious group founded in the mid-eighteenth century by a woman named Ann Lee. This thesis follows the stories told about Ann Lee by the Shakers throughout their history and documents how the changing narratives reflect the changing culture of Shakerism. As a result of being both a progressive and a communal religious society, the Shakers faced the dilemma of maintaining their religious core while maintaining a progressive stance that was consistent with the dominant culture from which they strived to separate themselves. This thesis argues that the Shakers used the static form of the written narrative to balance and maintain the essential nature of Shakerism, threatened by increased interaction with American mainstream society.

In 19th century birth of the term scientist led to beginning of Sciences professionalization and end of Nature eclectic scholar, of which Humboldt was the last exponent. Humboldt managed to connect all disciplines in a holistic vision of the world: organic and inorganic nature form a single system of active forces; all the organisms of Earth are linked as a family sharing same home. Today, given the anthropogenic damage caused to Nature, it needs to reconsider his unified vision, establishing connections between scholars of various disciplines, for an organic and global vision of Environment.

Abstract:
At present, large-eddy simulations (LES) of turbulent flames with multi-species finite-rate kinetics is computationally infeasible due to the enormous cost associated with computation of reaction kinetics in 3D flows. In a recent study, In-Situ Adaptive Tabulation (ISAT) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) methodologies were developed for computing finite-rate kinetics in a cost effective manner. Although ISAT reduces the cost of direct integration considerably, the ISAT tables require significant on-line storage in memory and can continue to grow over multiple flow-through times (an essential feature in LES). Hence, direct use of ISAT in LES may not be practical, especially in parallel solvers. In this study, a storage-efficient Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is investigated for LES application. Preliminary studies using ANN to predict freely propagating turbulent premixed flames over a range of operational parameters are described and issues regarding the implementation of such ANNs for engineering LES are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Near-wall modelling is one of the most challenging aspects of CFD computations. In fact, integration-to-the-wall with low-Reynolds approach strongly affects accuracy of results, but strongly increases the computational resources required by the simulation. A compromise between accuracy and speed to solution is usually obtained through the use of wall functions, especially in RANS computations, which normally require that the first cell of the grid to fall inside the log-layer (50 < y+ < 200) [1]. This approach can be generally considered as robust, however the derivation of wall functions from attached flow boundary layers can mislead to non-physical results in presence of specific flow topologies, e.g. recirculation, or whenever a detailed boundary layer representation is required (e.g. aeroacoustics studies) [2]. In this work, a preliminary attempt to create an alternative data-driven wall function is performed, exploiting artificial neural networks (ANNs). Whenever enough training examples are provided, ANNs have proven to be extremely powerful in solving complex non-linear problems [3]. The learner that is derived from the multi-layer perceptron ANN, is here used to obtain two-dimensional, turbulent production and dissipation values near the walls. Training examples of the dataset have been initially collected either from LES simulations of significant 2D test cases or have been found in open databases. Assessments on the morphology and the ANN training can be found in the paper. The ANN has been implemented in a Python environment, using scikit-learn and tensorflow libraries [4][5]. The derived wall function is implemented in OpenFOAM v-17.12 [6], embedding the forwarding algorithm in run-time computations exploiting Python3.6m C_Api library. The data-driven wall function is here applied to k-epsilon simulations of a 2D periodic hill with different computational grids and to a modified compressor cascade NACA aerofoil with sinusoidal leading edge. A comparison between ANN enhanced simulations, available data and standard modelization is here performed and reported.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract With the recent advances in Artificial Intelligence, avenues for the application of Machine Learning (ML) are increasing in many engineering problems pertaining to Fluid Mechanics. Particle Image Velocimetry is an advanced fluid measurement technique but the pressure evaluation requires the data to be further processed. In the proposed work, we focus on developing a novel computational framework using Machine Learning techniques, primarily Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to infer the pressure fields from velocity obtained from PIV data. The framework was tested for a case of flow over a periodic hill. The data for training was generated by performing LES simulations for different hill curves and Reynolds number. Various Regression models were developed in conjunction with the Adam and Limited Memory - BFGS (L-BFGS) optimizers and suitable activation functions. A detailed study of the performance of each model was done to determine the optimum values of the hyperparameters. Further, a comparative analysis of various models and the respective optimization algorithms used was performed. It was concluded that the multi-layered perceptron model with L - BFGS optimizer showed the best performance. Overall, it is observed that the models can predict the pressure values with a high degree of accuracy as confirmed by validation with the previous literature data.

Abstract:
Low pressure turbine airfoils of the present generation usually operate at subsonic conditions, with exit Mach numbers of about 0.6. To reduce the costs of experimental programs it can be convenient to carry out measurements in low speed tunnels in order to determine the cascades performance. Generally speaking, low speed tests are usually carried out on airfoils with modified shape, in order to compensate for the effects of compressibility. A scaling procedure for high-lift, low pressure turbine airfoils to be studied in low speed conditions is presented and discussed. The proposed procedure is based on the matching of a prescribed blade load distribution between the low speed airfoil and the actual one. Such a requirement is fulfilled via an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) methodology and a detailed parameterization of the airfoil. A RANS solver is used to guide the redesign process. The comparison between high and low speed profiles is carried out, over a wide range of Reynolds numbers, by using a novel three-equation, transition-sensitive, turbulence model. Such a model is based on the coupling of an additional transport equation for the so-called laminar kinetic energy (LKE) with the Wilcox k–ω model and it has proven to be effective for transitional, separated-flow configurations of high-lift cascade flows.

Abstract:
Abstract Biogas production is an anaerobic waste-to-energy technology, involving waste degradation and stabilization. The sustainable, cheap and clean nature of biogas has led to the unprecedented rise in its use as an alternative energy source. Due to the increased interests, availability of conventional biodegradable organics has shrunk enormously over the years, necessitating the aggressive search for novel energy crops and substrate enhancement options. These novel options ensure feedstock security, optimize conventional biomass feedstocks, improve feedstock degradability and increase in biogas yield. Low biodegradability of most lignocellulosic wastes like okra waste, limits their use as a viable substrate in the anaerobic digestion process. Over the years, several elements, compounds and nanoparticles have been applied to anaerobic digestion systems as supplementary nutrients with a view to enhancing substrate degradation. Such supplements like iron-based additives have gained prominence in anaerobic digestion processes of wastes, owing to their electron donation abilities, promotion of solubilization, hydrolysis, acidification, and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. In a bid to enhance substrate degradation, reduce inhibitions, increase both biogas yield and methane content, a comparative study on the influence of four different iron-based additives (nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), Polypyrrole-magnetic nanocomposite (Ppy-Fe3O4), Iron powder (Fe) and Hematite (Fe2O3)) on the entire anaerobic digestion of okra waste was done. Previously determined optimum doses, 20 mg, 20 mg, 750 mg, 750 mg and 0 respectively for nZVI, Ppy-Fe3O4, Fe, Fe2O3 and control were added to the bioreactors containing okra wastes in a 500 mL biomethane potential bioreactors under mesophilic temperature (37°C) for 20 days. The cumulative volumes of the biogas from different reactors were recorded and analyzed. The morphological deformation, structures and analysis of the undigested substrate, digestates of substrate supplemented with iron-based additives and the control were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Artificial neural network (ANN) model and the modified Gompertz model were validated with the experimental data. The ANN model showed better goodness of fit and was better correlated with the experimental data. Experimental data were subjected to analysis of variance at a 95% confidence level. Results showed that Ppy-Fe3O4 additives better enhanced both biogas yield and methane contents significantly when compared to the control. It was also observed that all iron-additive supplemented processes were more degraded when compared with the control.
