Abstract:
A study and comparison of works by two creators of ritual performance—Anna Halprin and Lin Lee-Chen—provide insight into Richard Schechner's efficacy-entertainment continuum as well as how ritual manifests in contemporary performance. Through a close reading of the structure and performance quality of Lin's Miroirs de Vie (Jiao) and Halprin's Circle the Earth “Dancing with Life on the Line,” I look at both artist's efforts and results in creating ritual performance and illustrate what I believe to be their distinctive features. Contextualization of the work and the artists' intentions shed light on the possibility or scope of change effected by their creations. While Lin's highly stylized large-scale dance-dramas in many senses cannot be compared to Halprin's nature-oriented participatory community rituals, commonalities in these two works show a strong emphasis on bodily experience, indicating embodiment as fundamental in creating transformative performance.

Full text
Abstract:
This article argues that Rena Owen’s star persona has been constrained, and ultimately undermined, by essentialist definitions of her status as Māori on the part of print media, in particular women’s magazines, in response to her role as Beth in Once Were Warriors (Lee Tamahori, 1994), a role that thrust her into the international limelight. These ancillary texts served to emphasise two stereotypes, positioning her either in relation to the traditional Pacific Island female type of the ‘dusky maiden’ or focusing on her criminal past and current scandalous behaviour. These representations of the actress detracted from her considerable talents and were undoubtedly a factor in determining a career trajectory that failed to fulfil its early promise. The scandal mongering of the tabloids expressed the uneasiness with which Aotearoa/New Zealand viewed public personalities that embraced a cultural past that included both Māori and European identities. Unlike the international press, which compared Owen’s performance to that of a range of film stars noted for their dramatic and charismatic capacities and presence, from Bette Davis to Anna Magnani, the New Zealand press portrayed her as ‘Beth’—as a social victim rather than an accomplished thespian.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale ‘The Snow Queen’ (1845) and its film adaptations have been examined from multiple perspectives by previous scholarly criticism. Recently, Gender and Queer theories have placed particular emphasis on the presence of non-normative romantic relationships between characters, namely, attraction between a young boy and an older woman (Kay and the Snow Queen), homoeroticism (Gerda and the Robber Girl), and even incestuous desire (Kay and Gerda), among others. In this paper, we will concentrate on how the original fairy-tale female characters and their interrelationships have been reworked in Walt Disney’s Frozen (Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, 2013), and we will analyse how the film’s representations of love, desire, and femininity simultaneously resemble and differ from its literary source. Firstly, we will explore how Andersen’s alluringly dangerous Snow Queen has been turned into a sympathetic character, Queen Elsa. Secondly, we argue that Gerda and Kay’s friendship has been transformed into sisterly love between the two female protagonists in the film, Elsa and Anna, whereas romantic heterosexual love, on the other hand, seems to have been relegated to a secondary narrative arc or done away with altogether, as the absence of a romantic partner for Elsa shows. Interestingly, having a Disney queen whose quest does not involve finding a husband has led some Frozen fans to speculate that Elsa could be the first lesbian Disney princess. Thus, we will also analyse Elsa’s character in connection with the different definitions of ‘queerness’. In light of all this, we discuss that Frozen is an example of the recent Disney trend to redefine true love and prioritize female bonding and empowerment. However, if we compare it to its literary precedent, the Disney adaptation seems to be less daring when it comes to portraying non-normative manifestations of love and femininity than Andersen’s original.

Abstract:
Background:Adiponectin is an adipokine that circulates in blood in three main forms, low molecular weight trimers, middle molecular weight hexamers, and high molecular weight (HMW) multimers [1]. It is still unclear which form of adiponectin is the predominant one to mediate the protein functions. Total adiponectin levels are elevated in both serum and synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [2], and total circulating adiponectin levels associate with inflammatory markers in a population at high risk for future RA [3]. However, the association of circulating adiponectin with markers of disease activity in subjects with RA is still matter of debate. Objectives:The aim of the study was to determine whether total and/or HMW adiponectin levels associate with markers of disease activity and/or plasma chemokine levels in a cohort of subjects with untreated early RA.Methods:The cohort consisted of 70 untreated subjects with newly diagnosed RA. Clinical disease activity markers, including DAS28, CDAI, CRP and ESR, were assessed and data on patient history were recovered from clinical files. The plasma levels of 15 chemokines were measured with LEGENDplex™ Human Proinflammatory Chemokine Panel or ELISA, and total and HMW adiponectin plasma levels were determined with ELISA. Multivariate factor analysis was used to examine the association between total and HMW adiponectin plasma levels with clinical disease activity markers and plasma chemokine levels. The multivariate models were used to select potentially associated markers and chemokines, which were then tested with linear regression. Results:Both total and HMW adiponectin levels were associated with several clinical markers of disease activity (CRP, ESR, DAS28-ESR). Total adiponectin levels were also associated with DAS28-CRP. Furthermore, a positive association was found between total adiponectin levels and the pro-inflammatory chemokines CXCL10, CXCL9, and CCL2, whereas HMW adiponectin levels only associated with CXCL9.Conclusion:This study shows for the first time that both total and HMW adiponectin levels are associated with several markers of disease activity as well as pro-inflammatory chemokines in a well-characterized cohort of subjects with untreated early RA. Those findings indicate adiponectin as a potential disease marker in subjects with RA.References:[1] Maeda N, Funahashi T, Matsuzawa Y, Shimomura I. Abstract:
A consultant in private practice, Anna, was followed over 2 years to observe ways her service delivery perceptions and practices changed after completing her academic education. Anna was interviewed three times with each interview being transcribed verbatim with ensuing transcripts thematically content analyzed. Over the two years, Anna experienced increasing coherence between her broadening theoretical orientation and service delivery practices. Anna’s service delivery became more client-led and focused on long-term growth rather than short-term problem fixing. Decreasing anxiety and increasing confidence in her competence, along with experimentation influenced the changes Anna experienced. Anna’s story provides insights for sport psychologist training, such as the value of experiential learning through client contact, personal therapy, and supervision groups.

Abstract:
Film Anga Lee Ostrożnie, pożądanie jest adaptacją mikropowieści Eileen Chang. Mimo że jest wierny literze oryginału, różni się odeń pod wieloma względami. Autorzy należą do innych pokoleń.

Abstract:
Joseph Welsh was the British Vice Consul in the port of Veracruz at the time of the uprising of 1832 by General Antonio López de Santa Anna against the government of Anastasio Bustamante. Contravening the orders of his superiors, who reiterated the view that it was his obligation to observe the strictest neutrality in the conflict and not interfere in Mexican politics, Welsh found himself supporting Santa Anna and the rebels. As a result, at the end of March, Bustamante's administration demanded that he be removed from office. The British Minister Plenipotentiary, Richard Pakenham, acquiesced. This article provides a narrative of the events that led to Welsh's forced resignation and explores what they tell us about British diplomacy in Mexico during the early national period. It also analyses Welsh's understanding of the revolt and his views on Santa Anna, providing some insights, from a generally ignored British perspective, into Santa Anna's notorious appeal and politico-military measures.

Abstract:
Background:Fenebrutinib (GDC-0853, FEN) is an oral, non-covalent, and selective inhibitor of Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) in clinical development for autoimmune diseases. Objectives:This was a randomized, placebo-controlled, multi-center study to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and pharmacodynamic effects of FEN in patients with moderate-to-severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) activity. Methods:Patients who met SLICC or revised ACR SLE criteria, had ≥1 serologic marker of SLE, SLEDAI ≥8, and were on ≥1 standard of care (SOC) therapy were included; patients with renal or CNS involvement, or exposure to B cell depleting or calcineurin inhibitor therapy were excluded. Patients were randomized to placebo (PBO), FEN 150 mg QD, or FEN 200 mg BID, for 48 weeks. A corticosteroid taper was recommended, with burst and taper permitted from Week 0 (W0) to W12 and W24 to W36. The primary endpoint was SRI-4 at W48. Post hoc subgroup analyses were conducted based on patient baseline disease characteristics. Results:This study enrolled 260 patients, with the majority recruited in Latin America, USA, and Western Europe. At W48, the SRI-4 response rates for FEN 150 mg QD and FEN 200 mg BID were 51% (95% CI: -8.5, 21.2; p value 0.37) and 52% (95% CI: -7.3, 22.4; p value 0.34), respectively, compared to 44% for PBO (Table 1). Post-hoc analysis showed larger responses in subgroups of patients with higher baseline disease activity (Table 1). Safety results were similar between FEN and PBO arms, although more serious adverse events were observed in the FEN 200 mg BID arm. Study discontinuations were balanced across the 3 arms (24-26%). FEN treatment significantly reduced levels of CD19+ B cells, anti-dsDNA autoantibodies, IgG, and a BTK-dependent RNA signature highly expressed in plasmablasts by W48 compared to PBO; C4 levels modestly improved with FEN vs. PBO (Table 2).Table 1.SRI-4 Response (%) at W48 in Primary Analysis and in Post-hoc Patient SubgroupsPBOFEN 150 mg QDFEN 200 mg BIDSRI-4 Response (%) at W4844n=8451n=8752n=88SRI-4 Response (%) in Baseline Subgroups At least 1 BILAG A48n=4254n=3959n=46 At least 1 BILAG A and SLEDAI increased DNA binding37n=1953n=1765n=26 SLEDAI arthritis with at least 4 swollen joints39n=5750n=5457n=54 SLEDAI arthritis with at least 4 tender joints39n=7153n=7059n=69 CLASI >=1021n=1436n=1131n=16Table 2.Key Biomarker ResultsPBOFEN 150 mg QDFEN 200 mg BIDMedian (%) Change from Baseline at W48 Plasmablast signature-19.7%n=52-54.3%*n=53-51.7%*n=57 CD19+B cells (cells/µl)-0.50n=38-57.0*n=49-57.5*n=48 Anti-dsDNA#(IU/ml)+6.9n=31-38.3*n=36-75.7*n=33 Total IgG (g/L)-0.20n=65-1.25*n=64-1.56*n=64 C3 (g/L)-0.02n=65+0.01n=67-0.01n=66 C4 (g/L)0.00n=65+0.02*n=67+0.01*n=66#Patients who were positive at baseline (>30 IU/mL)*Denotes significant vs. PBO; Kruskal-Wallis false-discovery rate controlled two sided (p-value ≤0.05)Conclusion:The primary endpoint of SRI-4 for FEN was not met despite evidence of strong BTK target and pathway inhibition. Abstract:
Considerable progress has been made in understanding the role of autoantibodies in systemic vasculitides (SV), and consequently testing for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies (anti-GBM), and anti-C1q antibodies is helpful and necessary in the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of small-vessel vasculitis. ANCA-directed proteinase 3 (PR3-) or myeloperoxidase (MPO-) are sensitive and specific serologic markers for ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV), anti-GBM antibodies are highly specific for the patients with anti-GBM antibody disease (formerly Goodpasture’s syndrome), and autoantibodies to C1q are characteristic of hypocomlementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome (HUVS; anti-C1q vasculitis). The results of a current EUVAS study have led to changes in the established strategy for the ANCA testing in small-vessel vasculitis. The revised 2017 international consensus recommendations for ANCA detection support the primary use PR3- and MPO-ANCA immunoassays without the categorical need for additional indirect immunofluorescence (IIF). Interestingly, the presence of PR3- and MPO-ANCA have led to the differentiation of distinct disease phenotype of AAV: PR3-ANCA-associated vasculitis (PR3-AAV), MPO-ANCA-associated vasculitis (MPO-AAV), and ANCA-negative vasculitis. Further studies on the role of these autoantibodies are required to better categorize and manage appropriately the patients with small-vessel vasculitis and to develop more targeted therapy.

Abstract:
Background:Most patients with clinical diagnoses of Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) are proteinase 3 (PR3)-ANCA positive, but a significant minority are myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA positive or are negative for ANCA [1]. Several clinical and genome-wide association studies have suggested that classification based on ANCA type, i.e., PR3-ANCA positivity as opposed to MPO-ANCA positivity, may be more relevant clinically than the traditional classification based on specific diagnosis [2].Objectives:To analyze demographic feature, disease manifestations and laboratory findings of patients with PR3-ANCA positive GPA in comparison with patients ANCA-negative or MPO- ANCA positive GPA.Methods:This is a retrospective analysis of 37 patients with GPA from a single center in Ukraine observed from 2010 till the end of 2019. The clinical and demographic data, initial Birmingham vasculitis activity score (BVAS/WG), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were compared between patients with PR3-ANCA positive GPA and ANCA-negative or MPO-ANCA positive GPA.Results:Of the 37 patients analyzed, 24 (64.9%) had PR3-ANCA–positive GPA, 6 (16.2%) had MPO-ANCA–positive GPA and 7 (18.9%) had ANCA-negative GPA. ANCA–negative GPA patients were younger at diagnosis compared to PR3-ANCA–positive and MPO-ANCA-positive patients (36 versus 47 and 49 years; p = 0.04). The gender ratio was similar in patients with PR3-ANCA–positive GPA and patients with MPO-ANCA–positive GPA or ANCA-negative GPA (33% vs 38% male, p= 0.61). The ocular manifestations - conjunctivitis/episcleritis (15% vs 50%) and ear involvement - otitis, mastoiditis (0% vs 33%) occurred more often in patients with PR3-ANCA–positive GPA (p<0.05), whereas sensory peripheral neuropathy (54 % vs 21%) and Raynaud’s syndrome (31 % vs 0%) were more frequent in compared group (p<0.05). ANCA-negative patients with GPA had lower, but no significant, initial BVAS/WG score than PR3-ANCA–positive or MPO-ANCA-positive patients with GPA (17.9 versus 23.5 and 24.8; p=0.20). There were no significant differences between groups in ESR or CRP levels and in the frequency of involvement of other organs and systems. Conclusion:We demonstrate clinical differences between PR3-ANCA–positive patients with GPA and MPO-ANCA–positive or ANCA-negative patients with GPA. The eye and ear involvement are common for patients with PR3-ANCA–positive GPA. The MPO-ANCA–positive GPA or ANCA-negative GPA is characterized by higher frequency of sensory peripheral neuropathy and Raynaud’s syndrome.References:[1]Lyons PA, Rayner TF, Trivedi S, Holle JU, Watts RA, Jayne DR, et al. Abstract:
AbstractThe music of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdóttir has been inspired by nature, not in a manner that results in specific pictorial evocation, but in the sense that her reflections on natural phenomenon are catalysts for explorations of a range of compositional polarities, including flow and stasis, stability and volatility, transparency and opacity, and expansion and contraction. Her observation of droning as a natural state has led to a dynamic creative use of drones that challenges and expands commonly held notions of their compositional potential. The article discusses their use, along with other compositional devices and processes, in the delineation of these polarities and the resulting formal structure of selected works for orchestra and chamber orchestra. These resources include disruption devices and morphing techniques that facilitate overlapping and transformation of layers of material. The particular compositional focus of each piece has led to fresh applications of these resources, imparting a distinct character to each piece and contributing to an ongoing renewal of the composer's compositional palette.

Abstract:
Anna Sokolow (1910–2000), an American Jewish choreographer known for her social statements, led the workers dance movement and performed as a soloist with Martha Graham. She imbued her dancesStrange American Funeral(1935) andCase History No.—(1937) with proletarian ideology that spoke to 1930s working- and middle-class audiences aligned with values of revolutionary and modern dance. These choreographies spoke to a political atmosphere focused on social justice while they appealed to a broad dance-going public. Sokolow's Graham training engendered a modernist aesthetic in her choreography that led critics to consider her work universal instead of marked as coming from a working-class left-wing Jewish dancer. This article argues that while narratives about Sokolow's work downplay her Communist affiliations, these ideals played a critical role in her choreography and in her navigation of international Communist circles. As Sokolow's choreography reinforced her politics, so too did her affiliations support her dance work.
