Both were Viennese-born and trained intellectuals who received doctorates in the human sciences from the University of Vienna in 1937. Both were deeply identified with lay analysis, emphasizing that for psychoanalysis to perpetuate itself it needed to promote serious and rigorous forms of research. Because Bettelheim was the better known of the two, this introduction focuses on Ekstein's family history, with special emphasis on his experie

De, Bievre Guy. "Open, mobile and indeterminate forms." Thesis, Brunel University, 2012. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/6361.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the early fifties “open form” has become a generic description for many different compositional concepts having in common musical outcomes which to a certain degree are indeterminate. The introduction looks into different meanings given to “form” in music and gives a historical survey of the origins of compositional indeterminacy. Next, the concept of “open form” is elaborated into a territory which is usually not associated with it: jazz. The introduction is followed by five case studies. Folio (1952-54) by Earle Brown is considered to contain the first intentionally “open form” works.

What is the subject of qualitatively oriented nursing research? Which methods are suitable for its documentation? And what methodological questions and problems arise from it? This book provides initial potential answers to these questions generated by research. It presents and discusses central research approaches in an overview and, above all, on the basis of current concrete projects. This critical stocktaking is integrated into a heuristic framework model consisting of nine fields of conflicting interest that are specific to nursing care, for whose analysis qualitative methodological appro

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Anna Botsford and John Henry Comstock's trip abroad to Germany. For a long time, Henry had struggled with the German language, in which so many treatises on zoology were written. He had finally concluded that a winter in Germany was necessary before he finished Part II of the textbook An Introduction to Entomology. Henry at once arranged for his university work under Rudolph Leuckart, the celebrated zoologist. Women were not admitted to the University of Leipsic at that time, but Professor Leuckart permitted Anna to attend one of his lectures, asking only that she came early and departed late—before and after the regular students. Back at Cornell University, after the Germany trip, the summer term of 1889 in entomology was well attended and Henry, as usual, enjoyed the summer teaching very much. He felt that leading his pupils to see the insects living in their natural environment was most important.

Abstract:
This chapter draws attention to the anthropological imagination of Aby Warburg, the great student of world culture and comparative mythology whose “Warburg Library,” founded in Hamburg, served as the meeting place for Weimar philosophers, historians, and cultural critics. Warburg determined the library's acquisitions from 1886 until his sudden death in October 1929. In December 1933 the library (approximately 60,000 books, plus slides, photographs, other materials, as well as the collective argument of the enterprise itself) was evacuated to London, to be linked as of 1937 to the University of London and fully incorporated into the university in 1944. The Warburg Institute's second-generation principal scholars, adherents, and administrators included Erwin Panofsky, Ernst Gombrich, Rudolf Wittkower, Edgar Wind, Frances Yates, and Anne Marie Meyer. In recent years, the methods and claims of visual culture and visual studies have embraced the legacy of Warburg's critique of formalist art history.

Curtiz signed a term deal with Paramount and helmedWhite Christmas (1954), the initial picture with the wide-screen format of VistaVision. Boosted by the star power of Bing Crosby, it was his most financially successful picture and became a Yuletide staple despite a clichéd script. He began a relationship with a twenty-year-old model, Jill Gerrard, while continuing hislong-term affair with the actress Anitra Stevens (Ann Stuart).Darryl Zanuck hired Curtiz to direct his uber-epic The Egyptian. Marlon Brando dropped out in favor of Edmond Purdom, and Zanuck cast his foreign-born mistress, Bella Darvi, as one of the leads.Curtiz addedAnitra Stevens to the cast as Nefertiti. The Egyptian was a critical and financial flop. He directedWe’re No Angels(1955), with Humphrey Bogart, which was a qualified success, followed by The Vagabond King, a Rudolf Friml musical that was an unmitigated disaster. He attempted to recover withThe Scarlet Hour, a crime drama starring a pair of new actors that wasanother disappointment. Soon after finishing up on that film, Curtiz was arrested for “disorderly conduct” (hiring a couple to have sex while he watched) and was written up in Confidential magazine.Although he partially rebounded with the Fox musical The Best Things in Life Are Free(1956), his professional future at age seventy appeared problematical.
