Abstract:
The analysis establishes a relation between Anna Seghers’s story “Wiederbegegnung” and her aesthetic reflection on a literature written beyond the guidelines for the method of socialist realism. It is highlighted how the experiences of exile made by the couple Seghers-Radványi and the writer’s memory images regarding experiences emotionally strong undergone during the exile in France and Mexico served as point of departure for the creation of the fictional story about the Spanish republicans Celia and Alfonso Varela.

Slodounik, Rebekah. "‘Once Upon a Time in Marseille’: Displacement and the Fairy Tale in Anna Seghers’ Transit." Humanities 8, no. 4 (2019): 173. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/h8040173.

Full text
Abstract:
Written in 1941, while she was living in exile in Mexico, and published in 1944 in Mexico and the United States, Anna Seghers’ novel Transit replicates on a formal level an experience of displacement, statelessness, and exile. In the following analysis, I examine Transit as a text of forced migration. Several features of the novel attempt to produce an experience of displacement: the narrative situation, the incorporation of descriptions that place the events of World War II into a longer history of forced migration, and the use of references to the genre of the fairy tale. The descriptions that engage with past forced migration and displacement attempt to universalize the historical specificities of the time period, whereas the references to fairy tales generate a sense of timelessness associated with this genre. Through these strategies, Seghers’ novel itself attempts to displace time. Seghers situates Transit within a long history of forced migration and exile, in which the categories that are often used to define and divide populations—such as nationality, ethnicity, and religion—are in flux. By emphasizing the role of mistaken identity, Seghers destabilizes the concept of immutable identities in a period of upheaval and transition.

Abstract:
Abstract Der Kopflohn (1933), an early novel by Anna Seghers, has a unique status in the field of literary investigations: it gives a literary milieu study of its time, in which the police chases a fugitive in the province of Rhine-Hesse in Germany. The implicit protagonist of the novel, however, is the emerging movement of German National Socialism. The literary investigation thus proceeds as a counter-investigation: It illuminates the spectrum of social and psychological events that take shape in light of the police investigation, and thus depicts the beginnings of fascism. The literary counter-investigation is thus not driven by a single event, but by the emergence of a social disposition. The article then shows that Seghers’ artistic mode of representation is informed by both her dissertation on Rembrandt and contemporary discussions of ‘realism’; furthermore, it argues that the novel establishes ‘counter-investigation’ as a para-genre the history of which leads up to the present, as recent films like Michael Haneke’s The white Ribbon (2009) show.
