Abstract:
Introduced by Mikhail Bakhtin, the notion of ‘speech genres’ (Bachtin 1979) is fundamental to discourse studies. It enables to describe messages from various fields within a uniform methodology, and discover (inter)dependencies between literary works and the repertoire of genres used in other areas of communication, whilst also providing tools for comparison of the repertoire of forms of speech used in various cultures. The article outlines the main threads of the research done in Poland in reference to the Bakhtin concept. The most essential accomplishments include: (i) a description of numerous speech genres which reveals the dissimilarities of their modal confines, proposed by Anna Wierzbicka (Wierzbicka 1983), subsequently taken advantage of in the ethnolinguistic studies by this author; (ii) numerous elaborations on individual genres and their repertoire as used in various fields of discourse (primarily, studies by the scholars based in Katowice, Opole, and Lublin); and, (iii) analysis of the content of the notions of ‘primary genres’ and ‘secondary genres’ and of genre contaminations (Dobrzyńska 1992).

Among culture-bound vocabulary items, we typically find names of realia, but also lexemes not immediately identifiable as such, but which are perhaps even more important as indications of culture specificity: words that reflect the ways of thinking and acting deemed appropriate in a given cultural milieu. This paper deals with one such item, which, according to Anna Wierzbicka (2006, 2014), is an essential component of Anglo values: the adjective fair in its moral sense. The analysis is meant to establish how successful dictionaries for learners of English are in rendering its nuances of meaning.

Tulisan ini membahas tentang makna verba miru dalam bahasa Jepang yang dituliskan dengan kanji 観る、診る、看る dan 視る. Keempat kanji tersebut dibaca miru dan memiliki makna yang berbeda berdasarkan konteks penggunaan dalam kalimat. Berdasarkan fenomena inilah tulisan ini mengkaji makna verba miru dengan kanji 観る、診る、看る dan視るyang tergolong dalam homofon dengan menggunakan teori Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) yang dikembangkan oleh Anna Wierzbicka (1996). Analisis NSM oleh Wierzbicka dilakukan dengan teknik parafrase untuk menemukan makna dasar verba miru sehingga diketahui perbedaannya. Data berupa korpus yaitu kalimat bahasa Jepang yang menggunakan verba miru di dalamnya yang diperoleh dari sumber berita online melalui pencarian google. Hasil pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa verba miru ‘melihat’ dalam bahasa Jepang yang ditulis dalam 4 variasi kanji yang berbeda mengandung unsur makna 1) melihat dan merasakan, 2) melihat dan mengetahui, 3) melihat dan melakukan tindakan upaya penyembuhan. Melalui analisis ini dapat diketahui perbedaan verba miru dengan 4 variasi kanji yang berbeda berdasarkan pelaku dan efek yang ditimbulkan dari pengalaman subjek. This paper undertakes a sematic-syntactic analysis of verbs relating to the action of ‘tearing’ in Sorani Kurdish and English; it employs the framework of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (hereafter, NSM) developed by Anna Wierzbicka and her colleagues. I will use NSM to fully investigte the meanings of the two verbs and to reveal the semantic structures and distinctive aspects of verbs under investigation. The NSM methodology, based on semantic primes and a grammar of combinability, enables the researcher to dig deep into language-specific concepts in a clear cut manner, while at the same not being a linguistic bias.

Abstract By analyzing the key words we reconstruct the conceptions created by the two speech communities in their languages in order to understand their interpretation of reality. The analysis of the collocations and expressions identifies common basic principles reflecting the relationship between language and thought. The analysis is based on the theory of linguistic relativity and uses methods recommended by Bańczerovski Janusz, Lera Boroditsky and Anna Wierzbicka in order to investigate connections between language and culture, language and thought. By adapting the recommended evaluation methods an evaluation model was created, able to reconstruct the Hungarian and Romanian linguistic image of man.

The purpose of this paper is to review some basic postulates of the theory of semantic primitives (semantic primes) and to evaluate the applicability of the natural semantic metalanguage in cross-cultural translation. The theory of semantic primes, formulated by Anna Wierzbicka and her colleagues, posits a universal set of cognitive primitives, lexicalized in all natural languages, which, combined into canonical sentences of basic syntactic patterns, constitute a natural semantic metalanguage (NSM). NSM is put forward as an alternative to traditional lexicographic definitions of words, to componential and prototypical semantic analysis, and, as tertium comparationis, presented as a more effective tool in translating culture-specific words and ethnosyntactic features.

This paper undertakes a fine-grained semantic analysis of some of the multiple uses of the polyfunctional verbal prefix ter- in Malay (Bahasa Melayu), the national language of Malaysia. The analysis is conducted within the natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) framework originated by Anna Wierzbicka, supported by examples drawn from a large corpus of naturally occuring Malay texts. The main goals are to accurately describe the full range of meanings, and to decide to what extent apparent differences are contextually-induced as opposed to being semantically encoded. In the end, seven distinct but interrelated lexico-semantic schemas are identified, constituting a network of grammatical polysemy.

NSM menggunakan sudut pandang antropologi dengan menyatukan ancangan tipologi dalam kajian bahasa serta logika dalam kajian maknanya. Berdasarkan analisis, ranah rasa dalam bahasa Indonesia tidak hanya empat rasa pokok, yaitu manis, asam, asin, dan pahit, tetapi juga ada pedas, sepat, gurih, getir, hambar, dan tawar. Semua konsep rasa itu dapat dijelaskan melalui apa yang ada di alam dan kehidupan sehari-hari, seperti buah, bumbu, dan masakan.

In an article entitled "Is BAD a semantic primitive?" (1996), John Myhill suggested that the concept 'bad' should be removed from the list of semantic primitives put forward by Anna Wierzbicka and Cliff Goddard. Myhill argued (1) that 'bad' is semantically decomposable, (2) that there is no word in Biblical Hebrew that corresponds to the English word bad and, thus, no linguistic form that represents the primitive BAD in this language, and (3) that 'bad' is dispensable in the semantic analysis and can be replaced with other components without any loss or change of meaning. Discussing and illustrating some fundamental questions in the search for universal semantic primitives, the present author reconsiders these findings and finds a different answer to John Myhill's question.

Dans cet exposé je m’occupe de certains travaux, relativement récents, de linguistes slaves, russes et polonais, qui examinent la relation entre le caractère national dans la langue et «l’image linguistique du monde». Le rapport entre la culture et la langue a toujours été représenté au niveau du lexique et de la phraséologie, mais les travaux en question l’identifient dans la structure grammaticale des langues. Je me propose de présenter cette approche en me concentrant sur le travail de la linguiste polonaise Anna Wierzbicka et sur son influence sur les linguistes russes. Ce courant d’études en Russie, qui suit l’hypothèse de la relativité linguistique dite de Sapir-Whorf, objet de discussions récentes parmi les linguistes, les psycholinguistes et les anthropologues occidentaux, pose des problèmes dans le contexte intellectuel général de la Russie d’aujourd’hui.

Der Artikel begründet die Notwendigkeit der Exkulturation bei der Durchführung der Inkulturation. Nachdem die wichtigsten Aussagen der Kirche über die Inkulturation zusammengestellt worden sind, wird der Vorschlag von Anna Wierzbicka geschildert. Nach der Meinung der weltberühmten Sprachwissenschaftlerin soll die Botschaft der Bibel aus ihrer früheren Kultur entwurzelt werden (Exkulturation). Ihren Ausdruck soll sie dann in den einfachen und elementaren Begriffen (semantische Primitiva) finden. Als Instrument der Exkulturation (nicht nur der Botschaft der Bibel) soll die natürlich-semantische Metasprache (Natural Semantic Metalanguage) angewendet werden. Im letzten Teil des Artikels wird als Beispiel solcher Exkulturation die Analyse des Gleichnisses aus dem Lukasevangelium 18, 9–14 vorgestellt. Die zahlreichen Publikationen der Autorin und die beispielhafte Durchführung der Exkulturation führen zum Schluss, dass der Vorschlag einer solchen Analyse den kirchlichen Forderungen hinsichtlich der Inkulturation der biblischen Botschaft entspricht.

ResumenEste artículo expone los principios de la teoría de la Metalengua Semántica Natural (NSM por sus siglas en inglés), originalmente propuesta por Wierzbicka (1972. Semantic primitives. Frankfurt: Athenaeum) y luego desarrollada en una serie de trabajos por Anna Wierzbicka y Cliff Goddard, además de otros académicos que trabajan en el campo. El objetivo es presentar cómo esta teoría se ha aplicado al estudio de la semántica y de la pragmática para analizar distintos aspectos de los hábitos lingüísticos de un determinado grupo cultural sin recurrir a modelos de universalidad, sino más bien trabajando desde dentro de la lengua estudiada para reconocer conceptos claves y estilos comunicativos que le son propios. El artículo presenta los conceptos de explicaciones semánticas y guiones culturales, que son explicaciones redactadas con la metodología de paráfrasis reductora a través de la herramienta de la NSM. La NSM es un minilengua compuesta por una serie de conceptos muy básicos y traducibles a todas las lenguas que sirven como punto de partida para explicar conceptos más complejos. Esta teoría ha sido complementada por Cliff Goddard con el concepto de lengua mínima, que también se presentará en el artículo. El artículo concluye con una exposición de las similitudes y diferencias que existen entre esta forma de hacer pragmática intercultural y la propuesta por otras teorías de la pragmática, incluida la teoría de la Pragmática Sociocultural de Diana Bravo y sus colegas.

Abstract The study of the relationship between language and culture has recently found an interesting source of inspiration in the theoretical-methodological basis of cognitive linguistics and ethnolinguistics. The paper draws on this resource, especially on the findings of J. Bartmiński’s Ethnolinguistic School of Lublin and the theory of culturally key words by Anna Wierzbicka, and following the previous ethnolinguistic research of Czech Christmas, it focuses on the image of the Christmas giver Ježíšek in contemporary Czech (private and public) discourse. This image has been reconstructed based on the analysis of language data and culturally significant texts dealing with the Ježíšek topic, and also based on a survey conducted among Czechs on social networks. The objective of the analysis is to contribute to the formulation of the so-called cognitive definition connected to the Ježíšek conceptualization, and to identify some of its aspects.

This six-volume, beautifully bound, boxed set contains 112 reprinted papers covering the history and development of modern theoretical pragmatics from its beginnings back in the 1940s and '50s with Charles Morris, Rudolf Camap, Yehoshua Bar-Hillel, via the major works in the 1970s of those such as Stalnaker, Bach and Hamish, J. L. Austin, John Searle, and Paul Grice, to the more recent contributions of, among many others, Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, François Recanati, and Anna Wierzbicka. The bulk of the contributions, either free-standing papers or sections from books, come out of what one might term a philosophical approach to pragmatics, but toward the end of the collection there is an attempt to cover more ethnographically rooted approaches and even to get into applied pragmatic issues related to aphasia, first language acquisition, second language acquisition (one paper), and politics.

This paper investigates the semantics of three Japanese evidential markers — rashii, yooda and sooda. These three words are often used in similar situations and interpreted in English as ‘it seems’, ‘it appears’, or ‘it looks like’. The expressions are semantically closely related, but sometimes they are not interchangeable. Thus the question arises how to articulate the subtle differences between them. Previous studies have attempted to explicate the differences by using explanatory terms such as ‘direct’ or ‘indirect’ to describe the content of information, and ‘objective’ or ‘subjective’ to describe the attitude towards the information. While these terms are convenient to capture the meaning simplistically, they illustrate only part of the words’ usage, and also the definitions apply equally well to other evidential markers. This study is the first explication of the meanings of these markers using metalanguage and the framework of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage Theory (NSM Theory) proposed and developed by Anna Wierzbicka and colleagues (Goddard & Wierzbicka 1994, 2002; Peeters ed. 2006; Goddard ed. 2008). By analyzing the deficiencies of the previously presented definitions, and examining actual usage examples drawn from modern Japanese literature, the article applies semantic primes to explicate the meanings of rashii, yooda and sooda. The meanings of each expression are illustrated by cognitive scenarios such as ‘I think I can say something like this about X’, or ‘I think this about X at the moment’. The resulting semantic formulae clarify the differences between the three expressions. They also have utility for assisting second language learners in decisions about using the three terms.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the reflection of selected cultural scripts in Anglo-American and Polish proverbs. The analysis concentrates on the way proverbs reflect two characteristic patterns of ‘Anglo’ culture identified by Anna Wierzbicka in her book English: Meaning and Culture (2006), i.e. ‘the respect for facts’ and ‘the value of personal autonomy’, and the cultural scripts associated with them. The study is based on proverb collections and the author’s corpus of texts with proverbs compiled from Polish Internet sources. Limited as a study based on such sources inevitably is, it does, nevertheless, demonstrate that proverbs do reflect cultural norms. It also shows that some culture specific Anglo-American proverbs are now used in Polish (e.g. Facts are stubborn things, Figures don’t lie or A man’s home is his castle), thus providing evidence that the influence of English and American ways on Polish goes beyond the level of individual words and expressions.

The article intends to convince that acculturation should be distinguished in the process of inculturation. First, the author defines the term “inculturation”, according to the teaching of the Church. Next, he gives some biblical examples of inculturation. It has been stressed that the process of inculturation must be bidirectional (incorporating the Gospel into the culture and adopting these cultural elements which are not in contradiction with the Gospel).Both the Bible and the Church indicate that a properly conducted process of inculturation is the condition which must be met for the target culture to accept the Gospel. In the last paragraph, the author singles out the conditions to be met by inculturation. Another process, namely acculturation which aims at depriving the Gospel of its cultural conditions, needs to be added to the list. Two writers have noticed the need of doing so: Anna Wierzbicka, the linguist, and Fr. Arkadiusz Baron, the patrologist (transl. by Zygmunt Kostka).

All European languages have a word for God, and this word means exactly the same in all of them. However, speakers of different European languages tend to relate to God in different ways. Each group has its own characteristic ways of addressing God, encoded in certain words, phrases and grammatical forms, which both reflect and shape the speakers’ habitual ways of thinking about God and relating to God. Often, they also reflect some other aspects of their cultural memory and historical experience. In this paper I will compare the meanings of the vocative expressions used for addressing God in several European languages, including “Gospodi” in Russian, “O God” in English, “Mon Dieu” in French, “Herr” in German, and “Boże” in Polish. But to compare those meanings, we need a common measure. I believe such a common measure is available in the “NSM” framework, from Natural Semantic Metalanguage (see e.g. Goddard and Wierzbicka, 2014; Wierzbicka 2014a and 2018a; Gladkova and Larina 2018a, b). The data is taken mainly from well-known works of literature, such as Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and Boris Pasternak’s poem “V bol’nice” (“In Hospital”) for Russian, Charles Peguy’s Le mystère de la charité de Jeanne d’Arc and its English translation by Julien Green for French and English, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s prison poems and Heinrich Böll’s novel Billard um halbzehn for German. The results have shown that each European language offers its users a range of options for addressing God. Some of these options are shared, others appear to be unique to the language. All are underpinned by broader historical phenomena. The exact nature of all these links remains to be investigated.

The present research paper aims at providing an insight into the nature of the English cultural key word right and its expression in Italian. The analysis carried out during the research is based on the theory of Cultural Key Words elaborated by Anna Wierzbicka and Cliff Goddard in the 1990s, who claimed that apart from common words which are clear to everyone, there exist certain culture-specific concepts which are fully understandable only to members of a specific culture. The main attention of this article, therefore, is focused on revealing the meaning groups of the concept right and their expression in Italian. The source of the data is the original version of George Orwell’s 1984 and its Italian translation. Preliminary results show that the cultural concept right is manifold and mostly used to refer to instances from the meaning groups of precision, correctness and well-being. This analysis also suggests that the concept right is indeed specific to English culture since Italian culture employs different lexical means in order to convey the ideas underlying this concept.

The study aims to present certain methodological approaches used in the research of dialect narratives. In the introductory part of the article, the author discusses the links between the related sciences, analysing oral text: traditional dialectology, oral history and ethnolinguistics. The concept of cultureme as the unit describing realia, deeply entrenched in a certain type of culture, composing a certain identity of an ethnic group, is also introduced. The notion of a cultureme is very close to the notions of a keyword, described by Anna Wierzbicka, and a stereotype or concept, described by the ethnolinguistic school of Lublin. The difference, however, is that that the description of concepts is aimed at reflecting the folk or nationwide worldview and human view, while culturemes are used to identify a specific community, show the specificity of a certain region and its values. The example of the description of one cultureme (the manor) is used to provide the complicated structure of dialect narrative, its stylistic values, types of a narrator, and subjective way of perceiving and assessing the reality.

Jan Plamper’s book addresses not so much the history of emotions themselves as their metahistory — the elaboration of the principal approaches to their study. The universalist paradigm, proclaimed by psychologists of the Paul Ekman school, is opposed by social constructivism, advocated by most historians and anthropologists. Plamper’s position is closer to the latter view, yet he cautions the reader against the overstatement of differences between the emotional worlds of people of various cultures and epochs, typical of radical social constructivists. In the reviewer’s opinion, the most promising approach is to combine the psychological constructivism of the Lisa Feldman Barrett school with the linguistic semantics elaborated by Anna Wierzbicka. Plamper, however, regards any manifestations of universalism, either in the form of core affects in the former case, or in the form of semantic universals in the latter, as either unacceptable or uninteresting. The controversy is to some extent terminological: if the definition of emotion includes its object, as Plamper believes, then emotions are infinitely numerous; if not, they are few.

Abstract This study is aimed at mapping the meaning of action verb provide and its translation in Indonesian lexicons. The data sources of this study are two Colours Magazines of Garuda Indonesia, May 2017 and March 2018 editions. In colleting the data, this study applied the observation method and note taking technique. Those data were analyzed using Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach proposed by Anna Wierzbicka (1996). Furthermore, the method of analyzing data was descriptive qualitative method. First, each of the data was analyzed to find its meaning configuration. Then, it was followed by the paraphrasing using semantic primitives to show the explication of each lexicon and be able to compare them. The results of this study shows that the action verb provide is translated into five different Indonesian lexicons in the Colours Magazine. The verb and its translations have slight differences shown by the meaning configurations as well as explications. However, they could properly deliver the intended meaning for the Indonesian target readers regarding the sentences they are in.

The article examines the problem of bilingualism from a diachronic perspective in the context of the contribution of current cultural theories (gender, postcolonial) to the perception of multilingualism in contemporary culture. A distinct issue in this research is compulsory bilingualism caused by the Holocaust and involuntary resettlement processes resulting from political harassment. The article also emphasizes the import of cultural anthropology, cognitive sciences and the sociology of translation into the redefi nition of the very notion of bilingualism and the infl uence of this phenomenon on such remote from literature spheres as therapy. Refl ection on bilingualism is largely dependent on the intellectual capacity of the bilingual authors conducting self-analysis. The cases of Eva Hoffman and Anna Wierzbicka provide more than adequate evidence which signifi cantly complements the testimony of philosophers, such as trilingual George Steiner, and bilingual writers, such as Conrad, Nabokov or Brodsky. Finally, it should be added that globalization favors bilingualism among authors but often also provides the rationale for choosing a less popular language as a means of expression.

Abstract:
The article considers the possibility of translating the names of emotions into other languages, taking into account cultural and sociolinguistic factors. Based on the concepts created by researchers in traductology (e.g. John C. Catford) or cultural linguistics (e.g. Anna Wierzbicka), it has been shown that the names of emotions can be perceived as untranslatable, especially in the context of searching for their one-word equivalents in other languages. Attention was paid to such names, the meaning of which is closely related to the culture of a given society (e.g. historical events) and therefore they should be classified as the so-called mentifacts, defined by Donald W. Klopf as affective and cognitive factors shaping the perception of the world by a given community. The proposed way of explaining the meanings of the names of emotions is the description of exemplary situations as a result of which they arise or with which they are commonly associated in a given society. In the summary, it was emphasized that the names of emotions are keywords with which you can learn not only a foreign language, but also culture.
