Abstract:
The main purpose of this article is to present verbal and numerical descriptions included in the works by Jan Długosz (the 15th-century Polish priest, annalist and historian) as a base for creating the statistical picture of the then economic situation of Polish regions, especially in the micro-scale (parishes, deaneries) and the mezzo-scale (dioceses). Jan Długosz’s biography and selected works were discussed in the study. The study focuses on the elements of state science in his works, particularly in Regestrum Ecclesiae Cracoviensisand in the introduction to Annales(the enumeration and description of Polish rivers, lakes and waterfront cities – Chorographia), as well as on the detailed description of the economic situation presented in Liber beneficiorum. This Długosz’s work along with the corresponding registers or inventories of church wages in the Poznań and Wrocław dioceses constitute a significant source for state science studies concerning the history of economy in Poland at the end of the Middle Ages.

Abstract:
Towards the end of Book 2 of Tacitus' Annals, Germanicus, great-nephew of Augustus, grandson of Mark Antony, and nephew, adopted son and heir of the emperor Tiberius, falls ill and dies at Antioch (2.69-72). His travels in the eastern Mediterranean in a.d. 18 thus reach a sad conclusion. They had begun when, after being recalled from the wars of conquest in Germany described in detail in the opening books of the Annals (1.50-1, 1.55-71; 2.5.2-26), he was sent from Rome by Tiberius to preside over the installation of a new king of Armenia (2.43.1; cf. 2.3-5.1).

Abstract: Fernand Braudel argues about the historical research which gives priority to long term. Even the founders of the Journal of Annales already thought history from long periods of time, contrasting to the political history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while Fernand Braudel has said that the political history is not only factual, or ordered to do so. To understand how Fernand Braudel reaches this position, we must reflect on the influences that led him to this, among them, and mainly from the tradition of the Annales. Therefore, we'll examine the comments about the historical time in Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre and how these considerations relate to the new grade of time proposed by Fernand Braudel. We'll review the historical time in its dimensions of "temporality" and "duration", the "dialectic of duration" and how Fernand Braudel works with the concept of "structure". The study of the methodological perspectives from Annales group, which is our project, is a prerequisite to understanding the methods of contemporary historiography, in particular those linked to the New History. Due to the systematization of the new proposal about time for historical research conducted by the Fernand Braudel and, especially, the merit of articulating the environment, culture and society on works marked by the "dialectics of the time," we have to take his work as a basis for the current research.

Abstract: This paper deals with two Lucien Febvre's courses, held in Collège de France between 1944 and 1947. From his two after death published books, L'Europe: genèse d'une civilisation (1999) and Honneur et Patrie (1996), the intention is, first of all, to map the Europe's concept and then the arising of a Christian country, going through the European country, to finally the strengthening of an ideal French's country, after the XVII Century. All this subject matter proposed by Lucien Febvre was taken as a reflex of the context in which Europe, specially France was living at that time, with the German invasion in French's soil. Carrying out his studies, Lucien Febvre has used historical psychology, providing in all his courses the "mental outillage" concept to map that Europe, but specially his "tragical" France

LET ME END where I began: this has not been a book about Ennius’ Annales, but about Lucretius’ reconstruction of Ennius’ Annales. I have expanded our understanding of Lucretius’ relationship to Ennius well beyond what has been argued traditionally. On my analysis, Lucretius’ engagement with Ennius is dynamic and thoroughgoing. Lucretius’ ubiquitous Ennian style serves, on the one hand, to signal to the reader that a passage should be read with Ennius in mind and, on the other, to announce a sort of stylistic reflexive annotation of actual allusions to the content of the ...

Abstract:
This chapter examines Annals 5–6, in which Tiberius’ life draws to a close and the issues of fate and divine punishment are linked to the decline in religious memory that has characterized his principate. Commemorations of Sejanus, Livia, and Agrippina the Younger show the Senate’s tendency to use cult practice for the flattery of the Imperial house. Episodes such as the appearance of a phoenix in Egypt and Tiberius’ own predictions of the future, made with the help of astrology, give Tacitus’ reader the impression that Rome will be punished for its actions.

This chapter aims to examine new perspectives on the annals of R. K. Narayan, with specific emphasis on Malgudi Days. It primarily attempts to examine how modern television/media has changed dramatically ever since Malgudi Days was first aired on Indian television during the eighties, what the viewers' expectations from television entertainment are today, how television viewers perceive the difference in television broadcasts since the 1980s until the present date. To this end, the author employs online reviews to assess the impact on viewers' choices through a number of paradigms, such as star ratings, the nature of the review content, the number of reviews, and the source of review.

Abstract:
This chapter deals with the last surviving Anglo-Saxon vernacular chronicle, E, produced at Peterborough c.1121, and the last stages of Chronicle /E which lies behind it. The content and palaeography of E place it at Peterborough. Peterborough monastic history is now incorporated into the story, though the result is not a simple ‘house history’. Questions are raised about E’s annals numbered c.1060 onwards, their likely home(s), and the stages of their composition. Work on /E is viewed in the context of burgeoning Latin historiography, with which it has much common ground. The fragment, Chronicle H, is placed in this same world. The networks and contacts invoked to explain patterns of composition and exchange from the mid eleventh century are seen as still relevant. The changing relationship of vernacular chronicling to the court heralds the end of a tradition of chronicling for and by an Anglo-Saxon elite who had disappeared.

Abstract:
Abstract Complex, unstable inflow jet has been linked to aneurysm growth and rupture. However, methodologies to characterize this inflow jet have not been well established. Our previous works (Le et al., J. Biomech. Engr., 2010 and Le et al., Annals Biomedical Eng., 2013) have shown a possible transition from the stable mode (cavity) to the unstable mode (vortex ring) of this jet. We have proposed the use of a non-dimensional index called Aneurysm Number to characterize this transition (Le et al., 2013). However, the quantification of such a transition is lacking. Currently, there have no efforts in quantifying unstable flows in intracranial aneurysms, which is essential in stratifying rupture risks. In this work, the aneurysmal geometries from three patients at Sanford Health, North Dakota are reconstructed from Magnetic Resonance Angiogram and Digital Subtraction Angiogram data. Using our in-house CFD code (Virtual Flow Simulator), high-resolution flow data is obtained via numerical simulation. We perform modal analysis of blood flow dynamics for these cases using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition. Our results show that there are up to five dominant modes in the flow arising from the interaction of the incoming jet and the aneurysm dome. The spatial distribution of these modes reflect the characteristics of the inflow jet and can be used to quantify flow unsteadiness. Future works will be needed to apply the same procedure for a larger population of patients to examine its relevance in clinical practice.
