Abstract:
The main purpose of this article is to present verbal and numerical descriptions included in the works by Jan Długosz (the 15th-century Polish priest, annalist and historian) as a base for creating the statistical picture of the then economic situation of Polish regions, especially in the micro-scale (parishes, deaneries) and the mezzo-scale (dioceses). Jan Długosz’s biography and selected works were discussed in the study. The study focuses on the elements of state science in his works, particularly in Regestrum Ecclesiae Cracoviensisand in the introduction to Annales(the enumeration and description of Polish rivers, lakes and waterfront cities – Chorographia), as well as on the detailed description of the economic situation presented in Liber beneficiorum. This Długosz’s work along with the corresponding registers or inventories of church wages in the Poznań and Wrocław dioceses constitute a significant source for state science studies concerning the history of economy in Poland at the end of the Middle Ages.

Abstract:
Towards the end of Book 2 of Tacitus' Annals, Germanicus, great-nephew of Augustus, grandson of Mark Antony, and nephew, adopted son and heir of the emperor Tiberius, falls ill and dies at Antioch (2.69-72). His travels in the eastern Mediterranean in a.d. 18 thus reach a sad conclusion. They had begun when, after being recalled from the wars of conquest in Germany described in detail in the opening books of the Annals (1.50-1, 1.55-71; 2.5.2-26), he was sent from Rome by Tiberius to preside over the installation of a new king of Armenia (2.43.1; cf. 2.3-5.1).

Abstract:
Abstract A Linguist As International Entrepreneur M.J. de Goeje and the Annals of al-Tabari (1872-1901) Modern-day scientists and humanities scholars are often expected to possess personality traits, skills, and virtues typically associated with entrepreneurs. These include (but are not limited to) a willingness to take risks, the ability to lead a diverse team of collaborators, and a flexible mindset. The roots of the ideal of the entrepreneurial scholar, however, are older. In this article, I investigate the realization of Michael Jan de Goeje’s al-Tabari edition in the last decades of the nineteenth century. To finance this ambitious endeavour and to successfully gather and manage a team of scholarly and non-scholarly collaborators, De Goeje needed to possess all the traits, skills, and virtues mentioned above. This case study demonstrates how an entrepreneurial spirit could be an asset for ambitious nineteenth-century scholars. At the same time, it illustrates one of the ways in which seemingly modern ideals of scholarship build on existing ones.

Abstract:
The paper is concerned with the analysis of textual differences between the Elder and the Younger versions of the First Novgorodian Chronicle. The author shows that several groups of differences are concentrated in the same part of the text: in the annals for the 12th century. They increase toward the end of the century, are the most numerous in the annals for the 1190s, and never cross the edge of the annals for 1199/1200. This chronological boundary is very impressive and cannot be incidental. The differences in question are both supplementary readings of the Elder Version (notes on some events absent in the Younger Version, more detailed datings, etc.) and of the Younger Version (additional details on some events of the 1190s). The author shows that all these differences must be attributed to an editor active soon after 1199 (the Elder Version reflecting the state of the text before this editorial episode, and the Younger version reflecting the results of it). This conclusion enables the author to challenge Alexey Gippius’ (1997) and Alan Timberlake’s (2000) theories on the relationship of the texts in question, and to suggest a new, somewhat simpler theory.

Abstract:
In his monumental work on Tacitus, Syme suggested that Tacitus made veiled criticisms directed against Hadrian in the Annals; subsequent scholars have not always accepted his suggestion. Yet those scholars who are sceptical of Syme's argument have not yet, on the whole, taken up the question of the reception of Tacitus' work by his contemporaries; this is a peculiar gap, when one considers the politically charged nature of Tacitus' Annals, which places under a miscroscope not only individual emperors, but the institution of the principate itself. It is, therefore, the intent of this essay to examine the audience's reception of Tacitus' Annals within the work's historical and cultural context: for Tacitus' audience (which I assume to consist primarily of elite males of senatorial and equestrian status), an understanding of the past about which he writes was made meaningful in part, I should like to suggest, by the present. Such an approach results in an open-ended understanding of the work, and decentralises it from its author in favour of the audience. The end result is a text which simultaneously questions even as it reaffirms Trajan as princeps.

Abstract:
AbstractThis work is a presentation of the so-called Environmental History in which a state of the art in Latin America and Argentina is emphasized. This is a trend which was born at the end of the 1960s and the next decade in the US, with European contributions such as the Annales School, to discuss the increasing social-environmental conflicts and reflect concern about them. To Latin American and Argentina’s case the paper examines how this new history, albeit still in an early step of development, is showing a great liveliness in the last two decades.Key WordsEnvironmental history, historiography, review, Latin America, Argentina.

Abstract:
Looking over the course of my half century working in the fields of Latin American and US history, I find that from the beginning to the end I have been working in a relatively isolated area of our historical profession. I have been committed to history as a social science, and in that framework, using mostly comparative and quantitative analysis to study themes related to basic social and economic structures. In this I have been much influenced by the traditional vision of the Annales school of historical research. I have also been totally committed to working within the social sciences, having completed a minor doctoral field in Anthropology at the University of Chicago.
