A passage from the unpublished Cronica universalis by the Milanese Dominican Galvano Fiamma (d. c. 1345) contains news about the expedition carried out in 1291 by two Genoese ships, which was intended to reach India by the Atlantic route. Until now, this expedition was known only from the Annales Ianuenses; according this text, the commanders of the expedition were the Vivaldi brothers, although in Galvano’s account the name of the admiral is Ubertus of Savignone. Galvano’s source is a lost libellus written by a Genoese priest, Giovanni da Carignano, who said he got information about the sailors’ fate from an embassy that came from Ethiopia around 1315: the ambassadors told that the Genoese had arrived in their land, but had given up returning home because of the difficulties of the journey. Galvano’s new witness anticipates by a century the first known contacts between Ethiopia and Western Europe in the middle ages.

The thesis aims to analyze the relationship between Genoa and troubadours lyric, which has been set within its historical and cultural context – on the model of Gianfranco Folena’s Tradizione e cultura trobadorica nelle corti e nelle città venete essay. The first part includes an historical overview from the first written accounts of Ligurian literature, when Caffaro di Rustico di Caschifellone started composing his Annales, to the end of Genoese republic’s culture: in 1311 the Commune was ruled by Henry VII and Calega Panzano, the last Genoese troubadour, disappeared two years later. The second part focuses on the non-troubadours cultural phenomena, connected to two different – but related – cultural centres: the laic communal authorities and the ecclesial ones (linked both to the cathedral both to the mendicant orders). Also, it describes the linguistic evolution of Genoese culture from latin, which prevailed until the first half of XIII century, to the Genoese and French vernaculars. The third part is dedicated to the analysis of the poems which mention the Commune and composed from the end of XII Century by non-genoese troubadours (Raimbaut de Vaqueiras, Arnaut de Maruelh, Albertet e Peire Vidal) and to the several forms of Medieval communication and propaganda. The study underlines that these poems were never commissioned by the Commune, since the Occitan language was in that time deeply connected to the courts around Genoa, where a large number of these texts were composed. The fourth and last part focuses upon the Genoese troubadours. Their poetical activity is divided into two consecutive phases with some certain contact points, whose most relevant poets are respectively Lanfranco Cigala and Bonifacio Calvo: this study on the Genoese troubadours school reveals that its poems are homogeneous, that Cigala was a real poetic model for all the other artists and the isolation of the troubadours phenomenon within the whole cultural experience in Genoa, being connected to the aristocratic élite of the city and its divertissement rather than to the communal environment.
La tesi ha come oggetto il rapporto tra Genova e la poesia trobadorica, analizzato mediante la contestualizzazione storica e culturale con l’adozione del modello utilizzato da Gianfranco Folena nel saggio Tradizione e cultura trobadorica nelle corti e nelle città venete. La prima parte comprende un inquadramento storico che va dalle prime attestazioni della letteratura ligure, quando Caffaro di Rustico di Caschifellone comincia la composizione dei suoi Annales, alla fine della cultura della repubblica genovese: nel 1311 il comune cede la sovranità a Enrico VII, mentre l’ultimo trovatore genovese, Calega Panzano, scompare dai documenti due anni dopo. La seconda parte si concentra sui fenomeni culturali non riconducibili ai trovatori, legati a due differenti poli in contatto tra loro, incentrati sull’autorità laica comunale e su quella ecclesiastica (basata sulla cattedrale e sull’attività degli ordini mendicanti). Essa inoltre delinea l’evoluzione linguistica del panorama culturale genovese dal latino, che domina pressoché incontrastato fino alla prima metà del XIII secolo, al volgare genovese e a quelli galloromanzi. La terza parte è dedicata all’analisi delle liriche che chiamano in causa il comune, composte a partire dalla fine del XII secolo da trovatori non genovesi (Raimbaut de Vaqueiras, Arnaut de Maruelh, Albertet e Peire Vidal), concentrandosi inoltre sulle forme della comunicazione e della propaganda medievale. Lo studio mette in rilievo soprattutto l’assenza di una committenza della Compagna, motivata con lo stretto legame tra il provenzale e le corti circostanti Genova, presso le quali del resto risultano composti molti dei testi del corpus. La quarta e ultima parte della tesi si concentra invece sui trovatori genovesi. La loro attività poetica è divisa in due fasi sicuramente in contatto tra loro, basate rispettivamente sulle figure di Lanfranco Cigala e Bonifacio Calvo: la presentazione della produzione autoctona evidenzia l’omogeneità dei testi della scuola e il ruolo di vero e proprio modello per gli altri trovatori assunto da Cigala, rilevando inoltre l’isolamento del fenomeno rispetto all’intero contesto genovese e attribuendo la fortuna del trobadorismo all’interno della Compagna al divertissement di un’élite aristocratica e non alle caratteristiche dell’ambiente comunale.
