Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the last book of Jacques Le Goff, in which he exposed his idea that the Middle Ages extended until the middle of the eighteenth century. The weakness of the demonstration is criticized because of its unsubstantiated statements and superficial analysis of authors and themes. These shortcomings are clearly seen when Le Goff considers the contributions of Marxist historians to historical periods. This attitude can be explained in the context of the complex relationships that the historians of the Annales School have maintained with Marxist historians and how the latter have considered the contributions of that school.KeywordsJacques Le Goff, a long Middle Ages, historical periods, Marxism, Annales school.

Abstract:
Social history is a relatively new field in Romanian historiography. In this context, Revista de Istorie Socială has attempted, since 1996, to contribute to the development of this field of studies and to bridge the gap between various historical schools and generations, opening new fields of research and reinterpreting old ones. This review essay provides an overview of the Review’s editorial policy, its publications, structure and content, in order to evaluate its impact on the development of social history in post-communist Romania. It is argued that the Review exhibits various historiographical influences, ranging from 19th century historicism to 20th century national schools of social history, most importantly the French Annales.

Abstract:
The purpose of this review is to take stock as the historiography of rural France pauses for breath following the headlong expansion of the post-Second World War decades. It examines some of the themes that continue to exert an attraction on scholars, and also some of the most recent attempts to challenge and reformulate the research agendas inherited from the Annales historians. The works discussed below raise questions concerning growth and stagnation in the rural economy, the basic characteristics of the rural community, and the role of quantification in rural history.

AbstractThis work is a presentation of the so-called Environmental History in which a state of the art in Latin America and Argentina is emphasized. This is a trend which was born at the end of the 1960s and the next decade in the US, with European contributions such as the Annales School, to discuss the increasing social-environmental conflicts and reflect concern about them. To Latin American and Argentina’s case the paper examines how this new history, albeit still in an early step of development, is showing a great liveliness in the last two decades.Key WordsEnvironmental history, historiography, review, Latin America, Argentina.

Abstract:
The review article describes the effects of the hastily implemented reform of school education. Its effects were monitored by researchers whose observations appeared in the volume Dilemmas of Polish Studies in the reformed primary school edited by Zofia Budrewicz and Danuta Łazarska, published as part of the Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracovienesis. Authors from many academic centres address the topics of overcrowded high schools (the socalled effect of the double year), students overloaded with learning, return of rote learning, as well as the process of full centralisation in education management (no teachers’ participation in preparing reforms), or politicised programme changes and haste. The volume contains many texts that critically analyse the new core curriculum in the field of Polish language education. Repeated allegations include: anachronism, lack of autonomy in the choice of texts, deprivation of references to modern times, dominance of theoretical terminology, marginalisation of communication practice, etc. In addition, some of the dissertations contained in the publication are based on empirical research and examples of so-called good educational practices.

Abstract:
Ignacy Czerwiński’s legal competences in the light of the opinions of professionals: Przewodnik testatora in Antoni Rosbierski’s commentsIn this article I present the opinions of Antoni Rosbierski 1764–1815, a jurist educated in Vienna, who worked in the area of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria inter alia as a councillor of court for the aristocracy in Lvov, on the subject of one of the first books of Ignacy Czerwiński 1749–1836, an active lawyer and, later, the author of Okolica Za-dniestrska 1811 which is considered to be the first ethnographic monograph. In Annales Jurisprudentiae pro Regnis Galiciae et Lodomeriae Rosbierski published in Latin a review of Czerwiński’s Przewodnik testatora [A testator’s guide], published in 1818 in Lvov. Until now, it has not been a subject of further studies. Both publications can be considered important sources for the evolution of positive laws in 19th-century Galicia that provide insight into the law culture of that time, which is an important element of the intangible cultural heritage of any society. For this reason, the publication is worth reminding of. Przewodnik testatora may be interesting not only to jurist specialists but also to those researchers of Polish culture who are interested in the problem of the relation between law and custom. It was one of many attempts at giving an answer to the question of how to counteract denationalization in the face of the sudden loss of sovereignty and extensive surveillance systems.

Monna, W. A. A. "On the use of wind profilers in meteorology." Annales Geophysicae 12, no. 6 (May 31, 1994): 482–86. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00585-994-0482-9.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract. As an introduction to this special issue of Annales Geophysicae a review is given of the applicability and performance of wind profilers. In meteorology, wind profilers play an increasingly important role. They can provide upper-wind measurements with an accuracy comparable to radiosonde data, but with a significantly higher temporal resolution. Height coverage and vertical resolution depend on the operating frequency, which, depending on the application, is usually chosen to be around 50, 400 or 1000 MHz. Measurements from stand-alone profilers in sparse data areas as well as data from wind profiler networks - which have increased the spatial resolution of an existing radiosonde network - have shown a positive impact on numerical weather forecasting. Information from nearby profilers can help the individual meterologist to optimize local short-term weather forecasts. In atmospheric research, wind profilers have been used for various boundary layer studies. In several mesoscale monitoring experiments wind profilers have played an important role. In Europe the development and implementation of wind profiler networks have been supported since 1987 by the CEC-sponsored COST-74 project. A follow-up project will probably start in 1994. Several topics deserve attention. A further assessment of the quality of wind profiler measurements is important. Automatic quality control procedures should be refined. Improved data assimilation techniques in numerical models will enable a better use of the high temporal resolution of wind profiler data. For a cost-effective development and use of wind profilers, the realization of frequency allocations, as globally harmonized as possible, is essential. Finally, the integration of wind profilers with other complementary measuring techniques is important.

Abstract:
The central claim of Ideophones and sound symbolism in Atlantic creoles is that ideophones constitute a relevant category in Atlantic creoles, and that they show both functional and substantial correspondences with ideophones in African languages. The book consists of two main parts: a critical review of the literature on ideophones (Introduction; Chap. 1, “Previous treatment of ideophones and sound symbolism in the literature”; Chap. 2, “Characterization of ideophones: towards a cross-linguistic prototype”), and an etymological database of ideophones in the Atlantic creoles (Chap. 3, “The use of ideophone in the Atlantic creoles and their tentative etymologies”). Two appendices present data sources and the approximate number of ideophones in some languages. The study is based on the available literature, supplemented by data on Atlantic creoles, African languages, European languages, and two Asian languages that was obtained either from specialists on certain languages or from first-language speakers.

Abstract:
Abstract. For ISPRS Technical Commission I (TC I), a remarkable number of 189 submissions for the 2020 Congress edition of ISPRS Annals and ISPRS Archives was received. This included both full paper and abstract submissions from all over the world. Encouraged by the success of double blind paper reviewing in preparation of the 2016 Prague congress and the 2018 Karlsruhe symposium, also this time, TC I organized a strict peer-reviewing process. This included double-blind reviewing for full papers as well as a two-stage evaluation of abstract submissions – first stage based on the submitted abstracts (“conditional acceptance”), and second stage after submission of the respective final papers. In total, we received 69 full paper submissions and 120 abstract submissions, which indicates a nice trend towards full paper submissions compared to previous TC I events.45 full papers passed the double-blind peer-review process and were accepted for publication in the ISPRS Annals (acceptance rate 64%); usually, three or four reviews were obtained for each paper. Abstract submissions and their respective final papers were reviewed by a team of professionals. In total, 76 papers were accepted to the ISPRS Archives. The manuscripts in both the ISPRS Annals and Archives cover a broad range of topics related to remote sensing platforms, technologies, systems and related methods and reflect the current trends in algorithmic research and developments in sensing and data acquisition methods. Noteworthy is that numerous contributions were submitted to Intercommission WGs of TC I with TC II and TC IV, which underlines the increasing trend towards an integral approach to sensors, systems and methods in photogrammetry, remote sensing and mobile mapping.

Abstract:
This year will see some fundamental changes at the Annals – changes that are aimed at both enhancing and maintaining its appeal across the broad range of surgical specialties. In this respect, there have already been some important refinements to the structure of the Editorial board. The Annals will now have representatives on its panel from the diapason of subspecialties. It is hoped that this will ensure an equitable apportionment of high-quality original research, review articles and case reports from across the surgical spectrum. It represents the single most tangible adjustment to the structure of the Annals in a generation and one of which I am sure Sir Cecil Wakeley would have approved. I would like to take this opportunity to formally welcome our new board members and invite them to join with our other long-term stalwarts into what is a uniquely collegiate editorial team. As many of our fellows and members will already be aware, there has been a significant shift made over the last few months in the handling of research contributions to the Annals. In recent weeks we have completed the transition to our new submissions portal and it is encouraging that reviewers and authors alike have commended it in equal measure. While we are sadly not in a position to accept much of the material submitted to the journal (we currently accept only one tenth of all the articles subjected to peer review) we can at least aim to improve and enhance the experience for all those involved. In many ways this digital migration is a precursor to a number of innovations that will fundamentally transform the way in which we produce the Annals, the most significant of which is the launch of our new digital platform this month. These innovations signal a gradual move away from the printed version as the principal conduit by which the Annals is distributed. Inevitably, there will be those who will lament the passing of this hitherto more familiar and tactile media and so measures are in hand to allow for a more limited production of a paper version of the Annals for RCS fellows and members who continue to elect to receive their Annals in the traditional format. Medical colleges around the world are currently undergoing similar deliberations and for some a digital version may represent the only opportunity to maintain editorial independence – unhindered by the implications of a commercial publishing partner. It is however hoped that for the vast majority of fellows and members, the new and enhanced digital platform will offer significant advantages such that the digital version becomes the de facto medium of choice. Matt Whitaker and the team at the Annals should be congratulated for their sterling efforts in making this transition. The new site, now live at http://publishing.rcseng.ac.uk , will enhance the experience of finding, accessing, reading, citing, sharing and saving articles from the Annals, Bulletin and FDJ. Sign-on will be much easier; page load times quicker and the search engine more powerful and intuitive. The new platform boasts improved functionality, full in-page article text and multi-media, citation tracking, reference generators and advanced social media integration. We are simultaneously launching a new video library where we will be hosting our technical videos. It will, I am certain, become a huge resource for our surgical fraternity. Our new platform will be followed later this year by the inevitable and ubiquitous app, which will allow readers to download issues of the Annals and read them offline and at leisure on whatever their tablet of choice might be. It is my belief that these and forthcoming changes herald the transformation of the Annals into a truly modern journal with all the digital services that authors and readers now rightly expect from their RCS publication. Abstract:
ObjectivesWe audited a selection of systematic reviews published in 2013 and reported on the proportion of reviews that researched for unpublished data, included unpublished data in analysis and assessed for publication bias.DesignAudit of systematic reviews.Data sourcesWe searched PubMed and Ovid MEDLINE In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2013 for the following journals:Journal of the American Medical Association,The British Medical Journal,Lancet,Annals of Internal Medicineand theCochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. We also searched the Cochrane Library and included 100 randomly selected Cochrane reviews.Eligibility criteriaSystematic reviews published in 2013 in the selected journals were included. Methodological reviews were excluded.Data extraction and synthesisTwo reviewers independently reviewed each included systematic review. The following data were extracted: whether the review searched for grey literature or unpublished data, the sources searched, whether unpublished data were included in analysis, whether publication bias was assessed and whether there was evidence of publication bias.Main findings203 reviews were included for analysis. 36% (73/203) of studies did not describe any attempt to obtain unpublished studies or to search grey literature. 89% (116/130) of studies that sought unpublished data found them. 33% (68/203) of studies included an assessment of publication bias, and 40% (27/68) of these found evidence of publication bias.ConclusionA significant fraction of systematic reviews included in our study did not search for unpublished data. Publication bias may be present in almost half the published systematic reviews that assessed for it. Exclusion of unpublished data may lead to biased estimates of efficacy or safety in systematic reviews.

Abstract. For ISPRS Technical Commission I (TC I), 76 submissions for the 2021 Congress edition of ISPRS Annals and ISPRS Archives were received. This included both full paper and abstract submissions from all over the world. Continuing the success of double blind paper reviewing in preparation of the 2016 Prague congress, the 2018 Karlsruhe symposium as well as the 2020 edition of the ISPRS congress, also this time, TC I organized a strict peer-reviewing process. This included double-blind reviewing for full papers as well as a two-stage evaluation of abstract submissions – first stage based on the submitted abstracts (“conditional acceptance”), and second stage after submission of the respective final papers. For the 2021 edition of the ISPRS congress, we received 32 full paper submissions and 46 abstract submissions, which underlines the trend towards full paper submissions compared to previous TC I events.17 full papers passed the double-blind peer-review process and were accepted for publication in the ISPRS Annals (acceptance rate 53%); none of the papers was reviewed by less than two reviewers; for the majority of full papers, three or four reviews were obtained. Abstract submissions and their respective final papers were reviewed by a team of professionals. In total, 28 papers were accepted to the ISPRS Archives.Strict peer-reviewing relies on many voluntary reviewers spending their time for reading and evaluating the submissions. We would like to express our thanks to our reviewing team – especially since they were again willing to contribute to the review process just after completion of the 2020 edition of the ISPRS congress. The manuscripts in both the ISPRS Annals and Archives cover a broad range of topics related to remote sensing platforms, technologies, systems and related methods and reflect the current trends in algorithmic research and developments in sensing and data acquisition methods. Noteworthy is that numerous contributions were again submitted to Intercommission WGs of TC I with TC II and TC IV, which underlines the continuing trend towards an integral approach to sensors, systems and methods in photogrammetry, remote sensing and mobile mapping.
