A pesquisa valeu-se da investigação de bibliografias dos historiadores vinculados à corrente historiográfica, bem como de seus interpretes e, por ultimo, de documentos de correspondências referentes à primeira geração. A investigação à partir das correspondências foi possivel através de um estagio doutoral realizado na Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales

Abstract:
No author from antiquity has had more influence on modern perceptions of the ancient poet, Ennius, than the late-Republican orator, Cicero. Indeed, Cicero helped transform the image of Ennius from that of a poet to an auctor, an authoritative source. Likewise, at the hands of Cicero, Ennius’ Annales was portrayed in a variety of ways, ranging from a work with scientific credibility, to a text actively involved in the transmission of Roman culture. This thesis aims to explore the ways in which Cicero constructed the authority of Ennius and his Annales through a close analysis of the citations in his philosophical works. As a result of this examination I hope to shed light on the different authority-building techniques with which Cicero crafted Ennius into a formidable source of auctoritas, while also considering his motives and the consequent image of Ennius that arises.

This dissertation investigates politics and nationalism in the Annales d'Histoire Économique et Sociale. Firstly, it approaches the background of this review in political terms. In this sense, some historians who worked with politics in their books were selected. It is the cases of Fustel de Coulanges before the french defeat to Prussia in 1870, of Grabriel Monod who approached the progress of historical knowledge and founded the Revue Historique, Ernest Lavisse who conceived the nation as political expression and Charles Seignobos who consideredthe historical knowledge as an instrument of political education. Next, we show the relationship of the review with politics. Before that, we praised the organization of the review, its themes, authors, among other. In its pages, one finds the policy that somehow remained and the big names (political figures). Moreover, we emphasize a nationalism that expands, especially, towards the African continent. Finally, the dissertation intends to know better a little explored topic of the review, besides perceiving changes and stays between the historians mentioned above and the AHES.
A presente dissertação investiga a política e o nacionalismo na revista dos Annales d’Histoire Économique et Sociale. Inicialmente, aborda os antecedentes do referido periódico em termos políticos. Nesse sentido, alguns historiadores que lidaram com a política em suas obras foram selecionados. São os casos de Fustel de Coulanges perante a derrota francesa para a Prússia em 1870, de Grabriel Monod que tratou do progresso do conhecimento histórico e fundou a Revue Historique, Ernest Lavisse que concebeu a nação enquanto expressão política e Charles Seignobos que tomou o conhecimento histórico como um instrumento de educação política. Em seguida, mostramos a relação da revista com a política. Antes disso, enaltecemos a organização dos Annales, seus temas, autores etc. Em suas páginas, encontram-se a política que de alguma maneira permaneceu e os grandes nomes (que por sinal são figuras políticas). Com efeito, destacamos um nacionalismo que se expande, sobretudo, em direção ao continente africano. Por fim, o trabalho pretende conhecer melhor um tema pouco explorado da revista, além de perceber mudanças e permanências entre os historiadores supracitados e os AHES.

Ce travail consiste en une etude generale des annales de mathematiques pures et appliquees du mathematicien joseph-diez gergonne, de sa biographie et du contexte historique, mathematique et epistemologique. Au plan historique, nous avons essentiellement considere les structures mises en place par les differents "regimes", de la revolution a la restauration, au niveau de l'enseignement primaire, de celui du second degre (ecoles centrales, colleges, lycees, universite imperiale), de l'enseignement superieur (universites, grandes ecoles), des academies (academies des sciences et de province). Le travail de gergonne est aborde sur ses deux aspects essentiels: 1ʿ) ses annales ((environ 8000 pages, etalees sur 22 ans de 1810 a 1832; pres de 140 auteurs) dont nous avons effectue une etude statistique agrementee d'un releve complet des tables des matieres et de precisions biographiques sur les multiples correspondants qui en fournirent la substance; 2ʿ) son uvre philosophique, qui s'articule autour de deux grands axes: une theorie de la definition basee, au nom d'un positivisme et d'un nominalisme tournes vers l'avenir, sur un rejet permanent de la metaphysique et des idees de condillac,et un systeme logique original et ambitieux. L'aspect mathematique a ete detaille sur deux questions d'importance: 1ʿ) le statut des nombres negatifs et imaginaires: les vieilles reticences sont balayees, les travaux d'argand et francais sur la representation geometrique des complexes permettent de jeter enfin les ponts necessaires entre l'analyse algebrique ou transcendante, la geometrie et la theorie des nombres, dans le respect d'un principe de permanence sans cesse verifie; 2ʿ) le calcul differentiel qui n'apportera pas dans les annales, malgre l'importance des contributions de servois, ampere, gergonne. . . , les reponses aux questions souvent eludees ( l'infini actuel et l'infini potentiel, la convergence des series,. . . ), marquant les limites d'une generation

Bien que la production tacitéenne de l’humaniste Marc-Antoine Muret (1526-1585) semble tombée dans l’oubli, elle constitue une mine pour qui s’intéresse à la genèse de la littérature érudite dédiée à l’historien latin pendant le XVIe siècle. Muret est en effet l’auteur de travaux multiples sur Tacite, alors réputés dans toute l’Europe : un cours sur les Annales prononcé à l’Université de Rome en 1580-1581 et 1581-1582, des éditions des premier et deuxième livres des Annales, quelques chapitres de miscellanées, les Variae lectiones, et un commentaire, publié de manière posthume. En outre, de nombreux documents personnels de l’humaniste sont parvenus jusqu’à nous (exemplaires d’éditions des Annales et notes de lecture autographes). Cette thèse se propose d’analyser la pratique murétienne de Tacite, intime – dans sa bibliothèque – ou publique – dans la salle de classe – et de la mettre en résonance avec celle de l’Europe des lettres, pour en identifier les apports et les éventuelles avancées. C’est pourquoi, après avoir fait le point sur les études tacitéennes et avoir mis au jour les nombreux enjeux que pose l’œuvre de l’historien latin à l’époque de Muret, je présenterai une étude détaillée et analytique des travaux de Muret consacrés à Tacite, en en montrant l’apport, et en en proposant pour certains d’entre eux une édition et une traduction. La troisième partie de mon étude s’intéresse à la fortune et à la postérité de ces travaux murétiens et tente ainsi d’évaluer l’importance des recherches de l’humaniste pour les générations de « tacitologues » successives
Although Marc-Antoine Muret’s tacitean works seem to have fallen into oblivion, they represent a goldmine for whoever is interested in the origins of all scholarly literature dedicated to the Latin historian in the XVIth century. For Muret published numerous works about Tacitus, well-known then throughout Europe : a lecture about the Annals, given at the University of Rome in 1580-1581 and 1581-1582, editions of the Annals’ first and second books, a few chapters of miscellanea entitled the Variae lectiones, and a commentary, published posthumously. In addition to these, many personal documents belonging to, or written by, the humanist have reached us (such as copies of the Annals, in various editions, and autograph reading notes). This thesis aims to study how Muret read Tacitus, both in the intimacy of his library or the publicity of his classroom, and to compare it with Tacitus’s reception in the European Republic of Letters, in order to delineate Muret’s contributions and speculated advances. Therefore, after a general account of tacitean studies and the many issues raised by the Latin historian’s works in Muret’s time, I shall present a detailed, analytical study of Muret’s works dedicated to Tacitus, showing what they contribute to his better knowledge, and offering the edition and translation of some of them. The third part of this study will address the fortune and posterity of these muretian works, thus attempting to assess the reach of the humanist’s research for the later generations of Tacitus scholars

Entre Roland Barthes et les historiens de l’école des Annales un lien de solidarité se crée au fil des années, suscitant d’importants enjeux intellectuels. Barthes essaie de renouveler l’histoire et la théorie littéraire en s’appuyant sur l’idée de l’histoire des mentalités et la théorie de la « longue durée » de Fernand Braudel. Parallèlement il souhaite situer sa sémiologie au croisement des sciences humaines : la sémiologie interroge le rapport des sciences au signe, elle s’enrichit en même temps de leurs apports et se déplace toujours en étant attentive à leurs nouvelles inquiétudes. La sémiologie et l’histoire sont fortement liées dans la pensée de Barthes, car le sens est un produit de l’histoire. En essayant de mettre en évidence la dimension historique de la pensée barthésienne nous souhaitons d’un côté questionner le développement possible de la recherche interdisciplinaire, et de l’autre, démontrer la puissance, encore aujourd’hui originale, d’une théorie historique de lecture, telle qu’on peut la déduire de l’œuvre de Barthes
Roland Barthes and the historians of the Annales School formed a bond of solidarity over the course of many years, raising major intellectual issues. Barthes tried to renew history and literary theory, relying in part on the idea of the history of mentalities and Fernand Braudel’s theory of the “longue durée”. At the same time, he wished to situate his semiology at the crossroads of human sciences: semiology interrogates the relation of the sciences to the sign, while simultaneously enriching their contributions and always working with an attentiveness to their new anxieties. Semiology and history are strongly linked in Barthes’ thought because meaning is a product of history. In attempting to highlight the historical dimension of Barthesian thought we wish to question the possible development of interdisciplinary research, while at the same time demonstrating the power, still strikingly original today, of a historical theory of reading, one that can be deduced from the work of Barthes

Abstract:
The archaeological remains at Hacienda Tabi provide an opportunity to study the effects of large-scale societal changes on the lives of the Maya who worked on the hacienda. The households, represented by the ruins of the worker’s village surrounding the main hacienda grounds, were at the core of late colonial/independence era Maya life. These households were subject to the forces of acculturation that accompanied the rise and supremacy of the hacienda system during the late eighteenth century. Archaeological excavations at Hacienda Tabi have revealed a re-orientation of social organization during this period. Prior to the formation of the hacienda system, domestic and social organization focused on kinship and extended family subsistence organization. Social status, wealth, and power in pre-hacienda communities were predicated on issues of age, sex, and familial rank within both the extended family and community. The hacienda system brought about fundamental changes in the organization and relations of production. These changes, e.g. the separation of producer from the means of production and commodity based production versus subsistence based production, changed the basis and therefore the form of Yucatecan social organization. Under the new system, the nuclear family rather than the extended family or community became the prime unit of social organization. In the hacienda community status was based on occupation and one’s place within the newly established labor hierarchy. The changing realities of social organization found under the hacienda system are reflected in the settlement patterns and material remains of the workers’ village at Hacienda Tabi. The material culture and types of housing excavated and recorded at Tabi underscore the inequalities engendered within the hacienda system of production. The research conducted at Hacienda Tabi has illuminated the changes associated with Yucatan’s articulation into the greater world system.

Abstract:
Analyses of conflict in Tacitus have often been focussed on tbe constitution of the Principate, specifically the loss of libertas which followed from the system of rule by one. This thesis offers a theoretical analysis of conflict in Tacilus, arguing that conflict stems from the wider social and systemic structures ordinarily designed to ensure peace, such as the law, the imperial hierarchy and the mos maiorum. The notion that peacetime policies and procedures became in themselves a source of conflict is here described as the paradox of imperial politics. Chapters I and 2 offer a close reading of the Augustan prologue and the accession of Tiberius, while also introducing the work of Giorgio Agamben on the sovereign exception and Michel Foucault on biopoliti cs, The first chapter argues that a source of epistemological conflict is cultural memory, specifically the knowledge of the violent past of civil war. The second chapter argues that political conflict results from Tiberius' inability to replicate Augustan imperium, which in Tacitus is the power to speak in the name of the law and decide truth . In Chapter 3, and with reference to Jacques Ranciere's conception of democratic violence, hierarchy is revealed as the source of conflict since although it serves to maintain order in the imperial state it equally (and paradoxically) fosters the potential for revolution, In Chapter 4, building on Hannah Arendt's notion of mores and lex, it is argued that systemic conflict (corruption and moral decli ne) stems not from the lack of law or the erosion of prisca vinus but rather, and again paradoxically, from the system of law itself as well as the moderating values encoded in traditional Roman morality. By reading Tacitean conflict as something which is ex traneous to the more obvious sources of political conflict (rising tyranny/maiestas/republican sympathies), but as something which is engrained within the ordering structures of society, this thes is offers new insight into the frailty of imperi al politics as well as a wider understanding of Roman pol itical and social conflict in limes of peace. The thesis also shows that (he contradictory nature of Tacitus' narrative is not merely a reflection of the ambiguous nature of men and government; but it may be read from a wider theoretical perspective, as an attempt to foreground the generative power of paradox, that is, how paradox works to reinforce the power of the imperial regime and the imperial peace.

Abstract:
Against the Tide investigates systematically for the first time how resistances to methodologies advanced by historians associated with the Annales School, one of the most influential twentieth-century schools of historical thought, came to exist in England, France, Germany, Italy and the United States between 1900 and 1970. It defines ‘methodology' in broad terms as the practice of history and poses a series of questions about resistances: who or what created them? What constituted them? Did they centre on a particular methodology, Annales historian or the Annales School as a whole? And what did opposition to methodologies incorporate: technical debates in isolation or wider issues associated with politics, religion and philosophy? The dissertation uses an interdisciplinary conceptual framework,drawing together ideas advanced in the history of science, sociology of education and knowledge, and comparative history, in order to answer these questions. The responses offered refer to and draw on a selection of sources: one hundred and nine scholars' private archives, the articles, books, critical reviews and published letters of a variety of historians and segments of the growing literature both about the Annales School and about the institutions within which the historical discipline operated during the twentieth century. They suggest that resistances played an important part in the international dissemination of Annales historians' methodologies, that resistors held different ideas about the Annales School from those of its creators and divergent methodological commitments, but that they like Annales historians often sought to enhance historical research and sometimes worked on the same subjects but in different and occasionally equally inventive ways. Overall, the findings illustrate a limited but important part of Annales' own history and thereby help to cast the School in new light on terms other than its own by placing it in the transnational context of twentieth-century transatlantic historiography.

In this Dissertation we analyze the diffusion of the Annales historiography in Brazil, from the historiographical production printed during the first decade of circulation of the Revista de História, periodical from São Paulo founded, in 1950, by the historian Eurípedes Simões de Paula from University of São Paulo. To examine this matter we have established, initially, the social and institutional place of this periodical, through analysis that considered its materiality, the profile of its collaborators and the intellectual trajectory of its founder. Then, we evaluated the series of works published in that journal, with the goal of position the place that the annaliste historiography occupied in that publication. The data obtained using these examinations were fundamental to explain the reasons that justified the dissemination of the Annales historiography in the pages of Revista de História. Such information, together with the research undertook around the Annales magazines, helped us to realize that the spread of annaliste historiography did not cease to relate to a set of practices, which intended, above all, to legitimate positions in the intellectual and political fields. In this context, we have seen how the transfer of such ideas was fed, primarily, by issues which are not restricted, only, to the interest in the development of historiographical knowledge.
Nesse trabalho de Dissertação, analisamos a difusão da historiografia dos Annales no Brasil, a partir da produção historiográfica impressa durante a primeira década de circulação da Revista de História, periódico paulista fundado, em 1950, pelo historiador uspiano Eurípedes Simões de Paula. Para examinarmos essa problemática, estabelecemos, inicialmente, o lugar social e institucional dessa revista, através de análises que consideraram a sua materialidade, o perfil dos seus colaboradores e a trajetória intelectual do seu fundador. Em seguida, avaliamos o conjunto de trabalhos publicados nesse suporte, com o intuito de situar o lugar que a historiografia annaliste ocupou nessa publicação. Os dados obtidos por meio desses exames foram fundamentais para explicarmos os motivos que justificaram a difusão da historiografia dos Annales nas páginas da Revista de História. Essas informações, somadas à pesquisa empreendida em torno das revistas dos Annales, ajudaram-nos a perceber que a disseminação da historiografia annaliste não deixou de relacionar-se a um conjunto de práticas, que objetivavam, sobretudo, legitimar posições no campo intelectual e político. Em meio a esse contexto, pudemos constatar o quanto a transferência dessas idéias foi alimentada, sobretudo, por questões que não se restringiram, somente, ao interesse pelo desenvolvimento do conhecimento historiográfico.

Essa tese de doutorado estuda os diálogos e as relações teóricas e metodológicas entre a Nova História e a Antropologia. Esse diálogo deu origem ao fenômeno chamado de Antropologização da Nova História, que significou mudanças nas formas de concepção do tempo histórico, nas fontes do historiador e na forma de construção dos textos historiográficos. A Antropologização do saber histórico foi a responsável pela abertura dos grandes temas da nova História, tais como a História das Mentalidades, do Imaginário, da Família e da Infância, da Sexualidade, da Religiosidade, da História Simbólica, das Festas e do Cotidiano. A tese investiga ainda os diálogos da Historiografia Brasileira com a Nova História, diálogos que foram responsáveis pela Antropologização da Historiografia Brasileira. Estudando o contexto histórico em que esses diálogos ocorrem, a pesquisa mostra a inserção da Historiografia Brasileira na historiografia global, as reformas na pós-graduação brasileira, nos anos 70, e a diversidade teórica e metodológica do campo historiográfico brasileiro, nos anos 80. A tese dirige sua investigação ao Programa de Pós-graduação em História da Universidade de São Paulo, entre 1985 a 1994, mostrando a presença de linhas de pesquisa, publicações periódicas, e, principalmente, a produção de dissertações e teses dentro dos temas da Nova História.
This doctorate thesis studies the dialogues and the theoretical relations between the New History and Anthropology. This dialogue originated the phenomenon called the Anthropologizing of the New History, which meant changes in the means of historical time, the sources of the historian and in the manner of building historiographical texts. The Anthropologizing of the historical knowledge was responsible for the opening of greater themes of the New History, such as History of the Mentalities, of the Imaginary, of the Family and the Childhood, of the Sexuality, of the Religiosity, Symbolic History, of the Festivities and the Everyday. This thesis also investigates the dialogues between the Brazilian Historiography and the New History, which were responsible for the Anthropologizing of the Brazilian Historiography. Studying the historical context in which these dialogues occur, the research presents the insertion of the Brazilian Historiography in the global historiography, the reforms in the Brazilian post-graduation in the 1970s, and the theoretical and methodological diversity in the Brazilian historiographical field in the 1980s. The thesis directs its investigation to the Program of Post-Graduation in History of the University of São Paulo, between 1985 and 1994, showing the presence of research lines, periodical publications and, mainly, the productions of dissertations and thesis within the themes of the New History.

Os Annales do historiador romano, Públio Cornélio Tácito, surgem como um documento de particular importância para a caracterização de alguns dos aspectos da vida quotidiana do período governado pela dinastia Júlio- -Claudiana, sendo também um testemunho indispensável, no que respeita o conhecimento de imperadores como, Tibério, Cláudio e Nero. Com uma visível preocupação com a fidelidade aos factos, o historiador mostra-nos como cada um dos governos dos referidos imperadores influencia o modo de vida, não só dos habitantes de Roma, mas também daqueles que se distribuem pelas províncias e pelas fronteiras do Império. É a partir desta intenção inicial de fidedignidade que encetamos a caracterização de alguns aspectos da sociedade romana, sobretudo durante a época em que Tibério se encontra no poder. A relação com as mentalidades e ideais, sobretudo filosóficos, vigentes na época, torna-se, para este propósito, essencial para a compreensão desses aspectos. A história de Tácito coloca-se, assim, ao serviço do estudo de usos e costumes de outras épocas, explicando, simultaneamente, os mais básicos hábitos da vida quotidiana actual.
The Annals of the Roman historian, Publius Cornelius Tacitus, acquire a special significance in the characterization of particular aspects of the daily life under the ruling of Julius-Claudian dynasty, as well as being an essential testimony for the knowledge of such emperors as Tiberius, Claudius and Nero. Clearly committed to accuracy, the historian describes in which way the regime of each referred emperor conditions the lifestyle of, not only the inhabitants of Rome, but also those living in the outer provinces and boundaries of the Empire. In view of this care for exactitude, we initiate the characterisation of some aspects of the roman society, mainly under Tiberius’s rule. In order to completely understand those aspects, it is essential to take into account the contemporaneous ideals and mentalities, particularly the philosophic ones. The history of Tacitus is therefore an essential tool to understand the ways of life in the ancient period, at the same time shedding light on the simple daily habits of our times.

Abstract:
The Annales of the Roman poet, Quintus Ennius, was not an isolated example of an historical epic. Other poets before Ennius' time had written epics of various types, and different sorts of poems that dealt with historical or national material, and some of these influenced Ennius. This study will consider Ennius' relationship to the Homeric epics, and show how he imitated them in form and style. The writings of other Greek poets who preceded Ennius will be examined to determine whether they might also have influenced the Roman poet. The works of the two Roman poets who wrote before Ennius will be looked at, and some observations made about other historical materials that may have been available for the poet to use in his work. Finally, the place of Quintus Ennius and his Annales in the historiography of Rome will be discussed. The Annales seems to have been unique in that it was an epic poem which encompassed the whole history of the Roman people from the earliest times right down to the period in which the poet lived. Other poets before Ennius had dealt with some aspects of their cities' backgrounds, including mythological and legendary material. Ennius was the first to combine ancient legends and more recent history into one coherent epic poem, his Annales.

L'Église a occupé une place dominante dans la société québécoise, particulièrement du milieu du 19e siècle jusqu'au milieu du 20e siècle. Elle a fait sentir son influence dans divers secteurs de la société, notamment l'éducation. Ce sont surtout les communautés religieuses qui ont assuré à l'Église sa prédominance dans le système éducatif. C'est pourquoi nous avons voulu mieux comprendre le rôle, l'influence et la situation des soeurs dans un couvent au Québec. Par notre étude, nous visons à éclairer certains aspects encore peu explorés de l'histoire des communautés religieuses. Pour ce faire, notre mémoire aborde les perceptions que les religieuses, elles- mêmes, ont de leur vécu au couvent de Coaticook. Nous avons étudié la communauté des Soeurs de la Présentation de Marie qui prend la responsabilité d'enseigner aux jeunes filles inscrites à ce couvent dès 1870. De façon plus précise, nous démontrons comment les religieuses écrivaient leur histoire. En retraçant les éléments qui leur apparaissaient importants de mentionner dans leurs écrits, nous souhaitons mettre au jour l'histoire que les soeurs voulaient raconter, le récit qu'elles souhaitaient léguer aux futures générations.L'analyse des Annales des religieuses atteste leur souci d'édifier la mémoire de leur institution. Dans le présent travail, nous montrons qu'elles ont écrit une histoire glorifiante, providentialiste et visant à construire l'identité de leur communauté.

Dans les années 70, l'Ecole des Annales s'impose dans le monde entier en tant que porteuse de la "nouvelle pensée historique". Mais, en quoi réside l'originalité de la "nouvelle histoire" ? Cette question incite à étudier sa genèse. Un des fondateurs des Annales, Lucien Febvre pourrait être considéré comme le meilleur témoin, parce qu'il est, selon Fernand Braudel, non seulement le plus grand historien du siècle, mais aussi un "banquier d'idées" pour les générations suivantes. Au tournant du siècle, deux concepts s'affrontaient, ceux de "science" et de "synthèse". Le modèle Febvre s'est bâti sur une "nouvelle" interprétation de la "science" : l'histoire est une science tant qu'elle est "conduite scientifiquement". A l'histoire "scientifique", Febvre oppose l'histoire "humaine" et "synthétique". Ces deux piliers de la "nouvelle histoire" sont-ils vraiment nouveaux ? En effet, il n'y a pas de véritable coupure entre l'histoire "traditionnelle" et la "nouvelle" histoire. Au fond, deux pensées historiques "traditionnelles" sont confrontées. Il s'agit de l'historicisme et du positivisme. L'alternance s'expliquerait ni par l'urgence épistémologique ni par la stratégie du pouvoir, mais plutôt par un "autoréglage" ou par les conflits des générations. En voulant combler une lacune qu'il trouve dans la tendance historiographique de la génération précédente, l'historien en vient à privilégier un autre domaine. Aujourd'hui, l'histoire des Annales reste une histoire entre autres. Cependant, les années 80 dénotent l'élargissement du cadre de pensée dans la troisième génération de cette école française, laquelle tente de sortir de "l'impasse" où le monde intellectuel français se trouvait depuis le début du siècle. Ce n'est que dans cette perspective que persiste le mouvement d'une "nouvelle histoire", digne d'attention et, après Febvre, toujours capable d'autres surgissements
In the 1970's, the Annales School held sway over the historical scene as the bearer of the "new historical thought". But, to what extent is the "new history" original ? This question incites one to penetrate into its genesis. One of the founders of the Annales, Lucien Febvre could be considered as the best witness, since he is, according to Fernand Braudel, the greatest historian of the twentieth century, as well as the "bank of ideas" for the next generations. At the turn of the century, two concepts conflicted with each other, that of "science" and of "synthesis". The febvrian model is constructed on the basis of the "new" interpretation of the "science" : history is a science to the limit that it is "conducted scientifically". To Febvre, history should be "human" and "synthetic" rather than "scientific". Are these two pillars of the "new history" brand-new ? In fact, there isn't a real rupture between "traditional" history and "new" history. Two historical ideas exist behind them : historicism and positivism. The alternations cannot be explained by epistemological necessity or by the strategy for powers, but rather by conflicts between generations. Today, the Annales School’s history is just one among many. However, the 1980's register the enlargement of the historical frame in the third generation of this french historical school which makes an effort to avoid the "obstructed path" where the french intellectuals have been isolated since the early twentieth century. It is only under this perspective that the movement of a "new history" persists, and, after Febvre, will always be capable of other upthrusts

Depuis la publication de la mediterranee de f. Braudel de 1947, de multiples enquetes biographiques ont ete publiees. Cependant, aucune recherche approfondie n'a ete effectuee sur les origines intellectuelles de cette oeuvre monumentale. L'etude de la genese de la mediterranee entre 1923 et 1947 constitue une entreprise historiographique et intellectuelle considerable exigeant que soient elucides un ensemble d'elements, tous relies les uns aux autres, soit : d'abord l'itineraire personnel de braudel et les traces de ses reflexions theoriques; puis les milieux ou il a vecu (alger, paris, sao paulo, allemagne) comme constituant autant d'influences possibles sur la naissance et l'elaboration de son oeuvre; ensuite les idees circulant a l'epoque sur la mediterranee, egalement la nouvelle histoire globale et ses methodes interdisciplinaires, le poids de l'economie, le concept de civilisation, l'essentiel aller-retour du passe au present et vise versa, et enfin, capital le lien etroit entre d'une part l'evolution d'une histoire globale fondee sur l'economie, resolument interdisciplinaire et tournee vers la comprehension du passe pour mieux comprendre l'avenir, et d'autre part, le theme - pivot des annees 20, 30 et 40 : l'humanisme nouveau. Since the publication of the mediterranee of f. Braudel of 1947, several biographical studies have been published. However, no deep research has been carried out on the intellectual origins of this monumental work. The study of the birth of mediterranee between 1923 and 1947 is a considerable historiographical and intellectual task, demanding a series of elements, all linked to one another, to be illuminated. First, the personal itinerary of braudel and the traces of his theoretical reflections; then, the "milieux" in which he has lived (algeria, paris, sao, paulo, germany) which set up some of the influences related to the birth and the elaboration of his work; also the ideas that circulate at this era concerning the mediterranean sea; equally the new global history and its interdisciplinary methods, the importance of the economy, the concept of civilization, the essential back and forth from the past to the present and vise versa; and finally, capital, the close link between on one hand, the evolution of one global history based on economy, interdisciplinalary and oriented towards the understanding of the past in order to understand better the future, and on the other hand the theme-pivot of the 20's, 30's and 40's : the new humanism. Durant cette période, la relation entre les historiens et les philosophes était tendue marquée par la méfiance des deux parties.Cependant, certains auteurs ont pu briser cette méfiance et engager un dialogue entre les fonctionnaires de Clio et Sophia. Comme un philosophe-historien,ainsi nommée par les deux Gilles Deleuze et de Jacques Le Goff, Foucault a ouvert un champ fertile de la recherche qui a guidé les transformations théoriques de la 'nouvelle histoire'. Nous notons la présence constante des théories de Foucault parmi les historiens des Annales, journal qui a établi par tradition le refus de la philosophie. L'objectif de cette thèse est comprendre comment Foucault a été promu au poste de philosophe-historien par la réception de leurs textes par les historiens liés aux Annales, en raison de la vaste dialogue entre les deux depuis le milieu des années 1960 et qui a duré jusqu'à la mort du philosophe en 1984.

French historian Émile-G. Léonard, while residing in Brazil (1948-1950) and teaching at the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), made an assessment of the Protestant segment in Brazil. He wrote a work that, six decades later, still constitutes the main interpretation of the Brazilian Protestant movement. This Sorbonne chair professor was influenced by the Annales School (especially by Lucien Fevbre) and was the first historian of this movement to consider Brazil as an object of research. This thesis approaches, firstly, the scenario of contemporary historiography and its impact within or on the overall context of the country. Next, it presents an overview of Léonard s life and work, with special attention given to his production about Brazil, that is to his Brazilianism . The last chapter deals with his evaluation of Brazilian Protestantism, and analyzes his contribution and influence with respect to studies developed around this theme.
Durante o período em que esteve no Brasil (1948-1950) como professor da Universidade de São Paulo (USP), o historiador francês Émile-G. Léonard analisou a presença protestante no país e escreveu uma obra que, passadas seis décadas, ainda se constitui na principal interpretação do movimento evangélico brasileiro. Influenciado pela Escola dos Annales - particularmente por Lucien Fevbre -, o catedrático da Sorbonne foi o primeiro historiador ligado ao movimento a tomar o Brasil como objeto de estudo. O trabalho que ora apresentamos aborda, primeiramente, o cenário da historiografia contemporânea e seus ecos no contexto nacional. Em seguida, a vida e a obra de Léonard são tratadas, dando-se especial atenção à sua produção sobre o Brasil, ou seja, ao seu Brasilianismo. No último capítulo, sua reflexão a respeito do protestantismo brasileiro, sua influência e contribuição aos estudos relacionados ao tema são analisadas.

L'imprimerie est une révolution en soi qui engendra de multiples conséquences. Les autorités, tout spécialement ecclésiastiques, voyant les impacts majeurs de cette diffusion, ne tardèrent pas à règlementer [i.e. réglementer] l'univers des lettres par le biais de la censure, créant ainsi une scission entre les écrits respectables et ceux à caractères scandaleux. Au cours du siècle des Lumières, les philosophes plaçant la raison au centre de leurs réflexions prennent d'assaut l'appareil censorial, ils attaquent ses fondements et ses conséquences. Ce mouvement idéologique n'est pas étranger à la chute de l'appareil censorial qui perd de son efficacité, même s'il persiste à durer. Cette mutation n'est pas non plus étrangère à l'expression du scandale qui fait courir les plumes au XVIIIe siècle. Il s'agit pour nous d'observer, précisément dans ce contexte d'ouverture intellectuelle, qu'est-ce qui fait scandale dans l'univers littéraire parisien et comment celui-ci s'exprime-t-il. On remarque dans un premier temps que c'est moins le sujet en lui-même qui sème l'indignation que la manière d'écrire et de traiter la langue française. On constate ensuite, qu'en dehors de propos scabreux, le fait de les présenter dans l'espace public contribue à accentuer l'éclat du scandale, sans doute plus que le sujet en lui-même. Finalement, à la source du scandale se situent les intentions indécentes qui motivent les différents acteurs de la Librairie. Au-delà des règlements de compte, l'Académie française apparaît comme l'une des institutions littéraires les plus scandaleuses à la fin du XVIIIe siècle puisqu'elle incarne justement à elle seule les trois moteurs du scandale.

Much has been discussed about the social and cultural aspects of the history of science. However, a dialogue remains underexplored by us historians from both the historiographic and the theory of history perspectives: the interface between history, the history of science and epistemology. By understanding science as a social practice, it has also fallen to historians to understand the nature of its object, which is at the confluence of both disciplines. In this sense, we can say the History of Science investigates the science produced by men throughout time and thereby inserts it in the social sciences, enabling us to analyze the theories and methodological tools employed in writing this History. Although each field analyzed possesses its specificities, the theoretical-methodological framework of history tout court offers various analytical tools to the history of science. The historian of science analyzes hard science and the scientific texts produced by it from a historical perspective. The questions, for the historian, are: how are scientific concepts and ideas elaborated by the scientists that write their own history? They are made by analogy to the history? Such questions provoke simultaneous compartmentalization and interchange. Finally, the proposal is to think about the history of science as a field within history in which the theoretical and methodological references cross and interpenetrate, remembering always that the history of science is history.
Muito se discute sobre os aspectos sociais e culturais da história da ciência, contudo há um diálogo ainda pouco estudado por nós historiadores: sobre a interface entre a história e a história da ciência, tanto da perspectiva historiográfica, quanto da teoria da história e epistemologia. Ao compreender a ciência como uma prática social coube também aos historiadores entender a natureza do seu objeto, que se encontra no entrecruzamento de ambas as disciplinas. Neste sentido podemos dizer que a história da ciência investiga a ciência feita pelos homens ao longo do tempo, e com isto, a insere na área das ciências humanas, o que nos permite analisar as teorias e ferramentas metodológicas utilizadas na escrita desta história. Embora cada campo analisado possua especificidades, o quadro teórico-metodológico da história tout court apresenta várias ferramentas de análise para a história da ciência. O historiador da ciência analisa a ciência dura e os textos científicos produzidos por ele de uma perspectiva histórica. A questão do historiador é de que maneira os conceitos e ideias científicas são elaboradas pelos cientistas que escrevem a sua própria história? Elas são feitas analogicamente à história? Tais questões provocam reações simultâneas de compartimentalização e intercâmbio. Por fim, a proposta é pensar a história da ciência como um campo da história onde os referenciais teóricos e metodológicos cruzam-se e interpenetram-se, não esquecendo afinal que, história da ciência é história.

Wir Menschen haben die Eigenschaft uns vielfach alternative Versionen von Ereignissen und Strukturen vorzustellen und uns mögliche Folgen einer veränderten Entscheidung in der Vergangenheit auszumalen. Wir spekulieren, indem wir die verschiedenen möglichen Konsequenzen unseres Tuns abwägen und eine Entscheidung treffen.1 Manchmal überlegen wir nicht und handeln gewissermaßen aus Affekt, später findet sich dann aber doch der Grund. Manchmal scheint es jedoch gar keinen Grund zu geben und wir produzieren etwas Zufälliges. Zufall und Kontingenz in der Strukturgeschichte, mit einem Fragezeichen wohlbemerkt, ist das Thema dieser Arbeit .

My main purpose with this paper of John Steinbecks Of mice and men is to both analyze the long-lived structures and the unique individual destinies of the novel. I employ the method of the historical Annales-movement and use three divided levels in my analysis to try to capture these high structures and low moments of humanity in Structure, Konjuncture and the Individuality. The first level, Structure, is used to see how long-lived almost invisible geographic structures set the human act of condition. The second level, Konjuncture, is easier to grasp in understanding of time and embraces for example economic structures as the industrialism. The last level of Individuality is the fastest in time and easiest to understand but in the long run also the least important. Humans are controlled by structures and norms. I try to inspect what these three levels look like in Of Mice and Men and how they affect each other and the main characters of the novel. I make use of Foucault and Butler in the Konjuncture-level to explore how power, production and discourse create structures that affects the working man and the “non-working” woman in Of Mice and Men. I adopt Butler to see how Steinbeck creates gender through clothes and working tools. In the Indivual-level we can see the effects of the other levels in the characters actions. For example how their sexual preferences are effects of the power-structure of the production (Rubin and Foucault), how a society see images of filth or purity when someone differ from the norm (Douglas and Foucault) and how we sacrifice one member of the social group to contain stability when chaos threatens (Girard).

This thesis explores the growth of antislavery sentiment in the English-speaking world during the eighteenth century. I examine the institutional processes, transatlantic discourses, and ideological schema with which individuals and groups reformulated their identities as a means of extricating themselves from slavery's various social, economic, and ethical implications. I argue that abolitionism in England is best understood as the cumulative outcome to a series of identity reconstructions, and that a Histoire des Mentalités, as drawn from the Annales School, is an apt methodology for unmasking the structural underpinnings of an antislavery identity.

This paper intends to carry out an analysis of the generational approach in the present time and to offer a proposal to reinforce its importance as an analytical tool. For that, its structure comprises a theoretical conceptual discussion and analysis of examples of recent studies in the country, identifying gaps and opportunities, and a recommendation of methodological innovations that could increase its relevance and usage to its full potential. It takes a historical perspective on the subject starting from the analysis of Julian Marias (1949) to address some of the main authors who have deepened the concepts, such as Mentré (1920), Ortega y Gasset (1966), and in particular Mannheim (1952), to more recent authors such as Abrams (1982) and Strauss and Howe (1991). It notes that the current application of the generation approach does not respect the conceptual robustness, causing an underutilization of the approach and its social potential. The paper then presents three distinct examples of recent Brazilian studies with generational ambitions, and discusses the advances and limitations introduced by them. Considering the context identified, it then presents a proposal for methodological innovations, based on the precepts of the École des Annales, which can, by rescuing the analytical depth of the conceptual framework, serve as a stepping stone for future studies and research. While reviewing a tool with high public interest from various perspectives and presenting new possibilities of approach, it seeks to reinvigorate the field of study and its multiple uses.
A pesquisa procura analisar a abordagem geracional na atualidade e propor o resgate de sua relevância como ferramenta analítica, através de uma discussão conceitual teórica, observação de sua utilização no país e proposta de inovações metodológicas para futuros estudos. Para isso, faz uma análise histórica do tema iniciando pela perspectiva de Julian Marías (1949), para abordar alguns dos principais autores que aprofundaram os conceitos, como Mentré (1920), Ortega y Gasset (1966), e, em particular, Mannheim (1952), até atingir autores mais recentes, como Abrams (1982) e Strauss e Howe (1991). Ressalta que o que se utiliza da abordagem na atualidade não respeita a robustez conceitual, provocando uma subutilização do conceito geracional e de seu potencial social. Em seguida, o trabalho apresenta três exemplos distintos de estudos brasileiros recentes com aspectos geracionais, e discute avanços e limitações por eles apresentados. Considerando o cenário identificado, apresenta então uma proposta conceitual para inovações metodológicas, baseadas nos preceitos da Escola dos Annales, que possam, resgatando a profundidade analítica do arcabouço conceitual, servir de base para estudos e pesquisas futuras. Ao rever uma ferramenta com alto interesse público sob várias perspectivas e apresentar novas possibilidades de abordagem, busca revigorar o campo de estudo com múltiplos potencias de utilização.

Resumo: Esta dissertação aborda dois cursos de Lucien Febvre, proferidos no Collège de France entre os anos de 1944 e 1947. A partir de seus dois livros publicados postumamente: L'Europe: genèse d'une civilisation (1999) e Honneur et Patrie (1996), procuramos mapear primeiramente o conceito de Europa, e posteriormente, o surgimento de uma pátria cristã, passando pela européia, e por fim, o fortalecimento de um ideal da pátria francesa, após o século XVII. Toda essa problemática levantada por Lucien Febvre foi dada como um reflexo do contexto em que a Europa, principalmente a França se encontrava, no período da ocupação alemã em seu solo. Observamos que ao realizar tais estudos, Lucien Febvre utilizou-se da psicologia histórica, aplicando em todos os seus cursos, o conceito de outillage mental para mapear essa Europa, mas, principalmente, para tentar compreender sua "trágica" França

From his two after death published books, L'Europe: genèse d'une civilisation (1999) and Honneur et Patrie (1996), the intention is, first of all, to map the Europe's concept and then the arising of a Christian country, going through the European country, to finally the strengthening of an ideal French's country, after the XVII Century. All this subject matter proposed by Lucien Febvre was taken as a reflex of the context in which Europe, specially France was living at that time, with the German invasion in French's soil. Abstract:
I examine how religion is presented in the Annals of Tacitus, and how it resonates with and adds complexity to the larger themes of the historian’s narrative. Memory is essential to understanding the place of religion in the narrative, for Tacitus constructs a picture of a Rome with ‘religious amnesia.’ The Annals are populated with characters, both emperors and their subjects, who fail to maintain the traditional religious practices of their forebears by neglecting prodigies and omens, committing impious murders, and even participating in the destruction of Rome’s sacred buildings. Alongside this forgetfulness of traditional religious practice runs the construction of a new memory – that of the deified Augustus – which leads to the veneration of living emperors in terms appropriate to gods. This religious narrative resonates with and illuminates Tacitean observations on the nature of power in imperial Rome. Furthermore, tracing the prominence of religious memory in the text improves our understanding of how Tacitus thinks about the past, and particularly how he thinks about the role of the historian in shaping memory for his readers. I consider various religious categories and their function in Tacitus’ writings, and how his characters interact with them: calendars (do Tacitus’ Romans preserve or change the traditional scheduling of festivals?), architecture (what determines the building of or alterations to temples and other religious monuments?), liturgy (do they worship in the same ways their ancestors did?), and images (how do they treat cult statues?). I analyze the patterns of behaviour, both in terms of ritual practice and in how Tacitus’ characters think about and interpret the supernatural, and consider how Rome’s religious past features in these patterns. The thesis is structured according to the reigns of individual emperors. Four chapters chart Tiberius’ accession, Germanicus’ death, its aftermath, and Sejanus’ rise to power; one chapter examines the religious antiquarian Claudius; and the final chapter analyzes Nero’s impieties and their consequences.

Esta dissertação aborda dois cursos de Lucien Febvre, proferidos no Collège de France entre os anos de 1944 e 1947. A partir de seus dois livros publicados postumamente: L’Europe: genèse d’une civilisation (1999) e Honneur et Patrie (1996), procuramos mapear primeiramente o conceito de Europa, e posteriormente, o surgimento de uma pátria cristã, passando pela européia, e por fim, o fortalecimento de um ideal da pátria francesa, após o século XVII. Toda essa problemática levantada por Lucien Febvre foi dada como um reflexo do contexto em que a Europa, principalmente a França se encontrava, no período da ocupação alemã em seu solo. Observamos que ao realizar tais estudos, Lucien Febvre utilizou-se da psicologia histórica, aplicando em todos os seus cursos, o conceito de outillage mental para mapear essa Europa, mas, principalmente, para tentar compreender sua trágica França
This paper deals with two Lucien Febvre’s courses, held in Collège de France between 1944 and 1947. From his two after death published books, L’Europe: genèse d’une civilisation (1999) and Honneur et Patrie (1996), the intention is, first of all, to map the Europe’s concept and then the arising of a Christian country, going through the European country, to finally the strengthening of an ideal French’s country, after the XVII Century. All this subject matter proposed by Lucien Febvre was taken as a reflex of the context in which Europe, specially France was living at that time, with the German invasion in French’s soil. Carrying out his studies, Lucien Febvre has used historical psychology, providing in all his courses the “mental outillage” concept to map that Europe, but specially his “tragical” France
