Abstract:
Annas’ virtue ethics faces the Circularity Objection. She claims that a just soul is disposed to doing just acts. If a just soul is defined neither in terms of right acts nor rules, then the Circularity Objection is circumvented. Drawing upon Korsgaard’s recent work, it is shown that Annas’ argument faces anew the Circularity Objection. Then, I examine Annas’ fresh attempts to avert the Circularity Objection by appealing to the community of the virtuous. I argue that this move does not save her theory from either relativism or the Circularity Objection.

Abstract:
This dissertation is about the fictional work of André Sant`Anna and is divided in three chapters. The first one establishes a parallel between certain narrative procedures used by Sant`Anna and other procedures commonly used in the visual arts of the last century. In this way, the specificity of San Anna s text is revealed, as well as the way through which it points to new technology and visual representation. The second chapter relates some of Sant`Anna`s texts with José Agrippino de Paula`s PanAmérica (1967), taking the latter as a source which Sant`Anna`s texts respond to in different ways, either formally or thematically. The third chapter confronts Sant`Anna`s fiction with Hal Foster`s formulations about the real, the abject, and the cynical reason, trying to refer them to the literary and Brazilian context.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Coastal areas are popular for housing, both for permanent living and holiday houses. At the same time, thin sediments and small storage capacity in the bedrock makes the ground water resources limited. The limited ground water resources combined with too large withdrawals of ground water makes salt water intrusion a problem in many coastal areas. This study examine the risk of salt water intrusion in drinking water supplying wells on the island Södra Finnö in S:t Anna archipelago, Östergötland, Sweden. A calculation of the relation between ground water recharge and withdrawal is obtained to analyze the ground water balance in the area. To investigate the thickness of the freshwater in the aquifer, the Ghyben-Herzberg principle is used, based on measurements of ground water levels in the area. The study also includes a GIS-analyze to investigate the risk of salt water intrusion for specific wells, and water samples analyzed for conductivity and sodium. The results show a positive ground water balance, which indicate the area is not to be seen as a risk area for salt water intrusion. However, the GIS-analyze and the water samples shows that some specific wells are in risk of, or has already been effected from, salt water intrusion.

Abstract:
Citizen science offers a potentially powerful tool for the environmental scientist to access large data sets over increasingly greater time scales. Given the ease of which information can be reported or shared online and the increase in community interest there is an overwhelming amount of data available. But two major questions remain; is the data reliable and how is it best used? This study addresses the first question by testing the ability of such data from Artportalen, Sweden’s Species Gateway for reporting observations of birds (and other flora and fauna), to reflect patterns in the presence and absence of breeding records of Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) and Eurasian Teal (Annas crecca). This was done by undertaking wetland assessments in a set of constructed wetland sites from Artportalen in Halland, Southern Sweden, with breeding records of the target species. A literature review was also undertaken to explore the existing ecological knowledge of breeding habitat requirements for each species. Physical and biological characteristics from the wetlands visited were then qualitatively compared to the existing ecological knowledge for each species’ preferred breeding habitat. This method resulted in some support for the reliability of this particular Citizen Science data, in that it reflected Tufted Duck’s preference to breed in wetlands closer to the coast, that provided some form of cover or screening around the edges and which had a large proportion of their shoreline bordered by tall emergent vegetation. Conversely, it reflected Eurasian Teal’s preference for inland wetlands that were closer to relatively open natural freshwater bodies, where tall emergent vegetation wasn’t as abundant. How this and other Citizen Science data can be used in the design and management of constructed wetlands for conservation purposes in light of these results is then discussed.

Fellows, Tyee Kenneth. "Visual resolution of Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) in space and time." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/53891.

Full text
Abstract:
The sampling of spatial and temporal visual information for all living organisms is finite. The speed and accuracy of visual systems contributes in part to an animal's sensitivity to visual motion. The ability to see swift motions is a crucial adaptation among bird species, which are high-speed animals that navigate in a three-dimensional world. Hummingbirds are emerging as important models for studying visual guidance in vertebrates. However, their sensitivity to visual motion remains unknown. A method that can be used to identify hummingbirds' sensitivity to visual motion is to characterise the spatial and temporal acuity of their visual system. It is hypothesised that temporal acuity scales positively with mass-specific metabolic rate and negatively with body size, and spatial acuity scales positively with body size. Given hummingbirds possess the highest mass- specific metabolic rates among vertebrates and the smallest body sizes among birds, I predicted that the Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) would have high temporal and low spatial acuities among bird species. Using operant conditioning and optocollic reflex experiments, I identified the temporal and spatial acuity thresholds of the Anna's hummingbird's visual system. Training hummingbirds to differentiate flickering from non-flickering lights at different rates and colours measured their temporal acuity for wavelengths of light between 380-750nm. Spatial acuity was measured by subjecting hummingbirds to rotating stimuli that varied in spatial frequency and luminance. The results indicate the hummingbird's temporal acuity is between 70 and 80Hz, and is unaffected by light colour (red, white, and ultraviolet). Spatial resolving capacity is measured to be between 4.95 and 6.18 cycles per degree in light conditions below 1.77 candela/m². Therefore, my measurements of spatial acuity in the Anna's hummingbird provide support for a positive relationship with body size, and my measurements of temporal acuity do not provide support for a positive relationship with mass-specific metabolic rate. This study marks the first time both spatial and temporal acuity is measured in a sustained hovering animal.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to examine how the media representation of elite skiers Anna Holmlund and Thomas Fogdö was altered following their accidents resulting in disabilities. In order to examine this a critical discourse analysis was performed on 16 newspaper articles from Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Göteborgs-posten, Sundsvalls Tidning and Aftonbladet, out of which eight of them had been published before the skiers respective accidents and the other eight afterwards. The results showed that swedish newspapers shifted their focus from how the skiers performed in competitions prior to their accidents to how their bodies functioned and how they would perform everyday tasks following the accidents. We found that this would distance Holmlund and Fogdö, representing them as deviants when compared to non-disabled people. In contrast to this we found that Holmlund and Fogdö would be allowed to talk about or show their lives and bodies in great detail. This would seem to function as a way of teaching non-disabled people of what it’s like to live with a disability. Through this Holmlund and Fogdö were represented as ambassadors for the disabled collective. We also found that there was a risk of objectification which would increase in connection with a decrease in Holmlund and Fogdö’s represented ability to communicate and function as a non-disabled person does. This also appears to increase the risk of having one’s voice excluded by other people talking in one’s place.

Abstract:
Sugar allocation mediated by membrane transporters is strongly affected by water deficit. The sequences of 63 sugar transporters were identified in Grapevine. The in silico analysis identify 7 monosaccharide transporters subfamilies and several cis elements in the promoter regions. Macroarray expression analysis showed that 4 sugar transporter genes are strongly expressed in all vegetative organs (VvHT1, VvHT3, VvPMT5, VvSUC27), some others are preferentially expressed in mature leaf (VvHT5), in root (VvHT2), in seed (VvHT3, VvHT5) and 3 genes are regulated during berry development (VvHT2, VvTMT1, VvTMT2). Macroarray gene expression analysis showed that VvHT5, VvSUC11, VvGIN2 and VvMSA are up-regulated in mature leaves under drought conditions and that VvHT1 was down-regulated. Water deficit triggers a strong accumulation of glucose, fructose and sucrose in water stressed leaves. VvMSA gene was overexpressed or silenced in grape embryogenic cells by genetic transformation. The silencing of VvMSA affects glucose uptake activity and VvHT1 expession. The Grapevine plants phenotype and the expression of VvHT1 and VvMSA expression were studied under both in vitro and ex-vitro conditions. For the first time, the involvement of sugar transporters and VvMSA in the response to water stress in Grapevine is demonstrated. A model for sugar signalling involved in VvHT1 gene expression is proposed, including a disaccharide pathway and two glucose regulatory mechanisms, one VvMSA-dependent and another VvMSA-independent. Finally, our results reveal the importance of VvHT1 hexoses transporter under heterotrophic conditions

Stegeman, Amelia Gwen. "A three-dimensional digital brain atlas and stereotaxic coordinates for the Anna’s Hummingbird, Calypte anna." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44574.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a new three-dimensional atlas for analyzing the neuroanatomical structures of the avian brain. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray computed tomography (CT), the brain of an Anna’s Hummingbird (Calypte anna) was scanned. These datasets were co-registered using three-dimensional visualisation software and overlaid with thionin stained slices in the sagittal and coronal view. Results show that previously developed techniques for creating three-dimensional atlases in other birds can be successfully used for representing the anatomical structures of hummingbirds (Güntürkün et al., 2013; Poirier et al., 2008; Vellema et al., 2011). There is no previous atlas, neither two nor three-dimensional, available for hummingbirds or any other wild-caught bird. Studies requiring avian neural recordings have not included hummingbirds, but this combination of imaging protocols along with descriptions from the literature provides the necessary and sufficient information for outlining many of the major functional structures in the Anna’s hummingbird brain. The co-registered datasets are also sufficient for constructing histological data into a three-dimensional representation that is functional in guiding classical tract tracing and electrophysiology experiments. By creating brain area delineations in three dimensions and anchoring these data to a skull, researchers will now be able to reach target structures from outside of the brain. For two regions of the brain, the lentiformis mesencephali and nucleus of the basal optic route, suggested stereotaxic coordinates and angles are provided. Through expanding the collection of atlases to include hummingbirds we introduce a new animal that will be especially useful for future studies of avian motor control.

Abstract:
Migration has always existed, but has increased more and more recently, which has led to increased demands for adaptation of communication in healthcare. The nurse's four main responsibilities such as promoting health, preventing illness, restoring health and alleviating suffering can be made more difficult and prevented by any language barriers. In order to meet the purpose of this study, the study design used is a systematic literature review. In the current paper, ten qualitative articles have been selected from the databases Cinahl, PubMed and Psychinfo according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, which have subsequently been quality checked. In the articles, the two main themes of communication difficulties and interpretation were pointed out. The consequences of communication difficulties can prove to result in malpractice of patients, increased costs and inadequate confidentiality management. The healthcare staff has also found their own strategies that can help them in talking to patients. This leads to the second main theme of the result, which is how different interpretations can be seen. In most cases, it turns out that healthcare professionals make use of the closest person whom is able to communicate in the current language, which often is a colleague, a relative and or a friend. The quality of the interpreted conversation is varied depending on the type of interpreter at hand. The purpose of the literature study was to elucidate nurses, and to some extent the experience of other nursing staff in communicating with patients with other native language than their owns as well as the use of an interpreter in these situations.

Abstract:
Abstract Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are recognized for their good properties in solving the non-linear classification problem. Especially, ANNs and their latest advancements in deep learning (DL) are blooming in artificial intelligence (AI) fields in the past few years. They have recently proven their abilities to handle some complex fault diagnosis problems. In the context of these backgrounds, this paper provides a concise review on the applications of ANNs to condition monitoring and fault diagnosis (CMFD) of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Firstly, a brief description of basic principle of ANNs are given. Then, a number of studies reported in both the journals and conferences are reviewed. These studies are divided into two categories according the application types of ANNs: shallow ANNs and deep ANNs. Finally, the conclusions and trends developed in the future are summarized.

Arhin, Stephen, Babin Manandhar, Hamdiat Baba Adam, and Adam Gatiba. Predicting Bus Travel Times in Washington, DC Using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Mineta Transportation Institute, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2021.1943.

Abstract:
Washington, DC is ranked second among cities in terms of highest public transit commuters in the United States, with approximately 9% of the working population using the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrobuses to commute. Deducing accurate travel times of these metrobuses is an important task for transit authorities to provide reliable service to its patrons. This study, using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), developed prediction models for transit buses to assist decision-makers to improve service quality and patronage. For this study, we used six months of Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) data for six Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) bus routes operating in Washington, DC. We developed regression models and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models for predicting travel times of buses for different peak periods (AM, Mid-Day and PM). Our analysis included variables such as number of served bus stops, length of route between bus stops, average number of passengers in the bus, average dwell time of buses, and number of intersections between bus stops. We obtained ANN models for travel times by using approximation technique incorporating two separate algorithms: Quasi-Newton and Levenberg-Marquardt. The training strategy for neural network models involved feed forward and errorback processes that minimized the generated errors. We also evaluated the models with a Comparison of the Normalized Squared Errors (NSE). From the results, we observed that the travel times of buses and the dwell times at bus stops generally increased over time of the day. We gathered travel time equations for buses for the AM, Mid-Day and PM Peaks. The lowest NSE for the AM, Mid-Day and PM Peak periods corresponded to training processes using Quasi-Newton algorithm, which had 3, 2 and 5 perceptron layers, respectively. These prediction models could be adapted by transit agencies to provide the patrons with accurate travel time information at bus stops or online.
