This dissertation aims to analyze the novel Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, the first of ten books in the Vampire Chronicles". The aim of this research is to demonstrate how the vampires presented by Rice are humanized. It begins with a historical study about vampires, both legendary and literary ones, then there is a study about the life and work of the American writer as well as a survey of the differences between the vampires from Rice and others described in the literature, including the icon of the genre: Dracula, by Bram Stoker. The analysis still continues with some theoretical notes on the fantastic genre, including concepts about Todorov, Ceserani, among others. There is also an analysis of the main characters: the vampire Louis who denies his vampiric nature; the vampire Lestat who also fights against human problems; Claudia, the vampire kid, who does not accept her condition as a woman stuck in a child s body; the vampire Armand, one of the oldest vampires in the world that looks for human peace. There is also an analysis of a human character, a supposed journalist, who listens to the story of mortal and immortal life of the vampire Louis. The analysis also covers the time and space in the narrative and its relationship with the fantastic genre, as well as some differences between the book written in 1976 and the film released in 1994, a big hit, reference for many other vampire movies.

This thesis examines the use of orality as a means to self-definition in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. The main contention of this thesis is that within the Vampire Chronicles orality defines the self through incorporation, and that the bodily incorporation of food through a sexual consumption leads the vampire to naturally evolve a sense of who he or she is at any given moment in time. It is in this manner that this article discusses how the body, sexuality, food, and the possession of financial capital define and limit the individual's notion of self.

Esta dissertação é um estudo que propõe revelar a complexidade e os paradoxos da família nas obras de três autores contemporâneos, William Faulkner: The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930) e Light in August (1932), Thomas Harris: Red Dragon (1981), The Silence of The Lambs (1988) e Hannibal Rising (2006) e Anne Rice: Interview with the Vampire (1976) e The Vampire Lestat (1985). This dissertation is a study that aims to reveal the complexity and the paradoxes of the family in the work of three contemporary authors, William Faulkner: The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930) and Light in August (1932), Thomas Harris: Red Dragon (1981), The Silence of The Lambs (1988) and Hannibal Rising (2006) and Anne Rice: Interview with the Vampire (1976) and The Vampire Lestat (1985). This work will analise the way these authors reveal what conventionally should be kept away from the eyes of the public, from this derives the transgressive power of this literary form, stressed on these authors. Showing the familiar units, it will be essential to think about its lack of functionality, in the repressed past that “haunts” a present conditioned by the abject and the repulsive, that in a paradoxical way attracts the reader. This paper will focus on the homosexuality and homoeroticism that can be found in Anne Rice’s novel Interview With The Vampire using Queer theory. The paper is divided into four parts in which different aspects of the novel will be discussed. Firstly the discussion focuses on the homoeroticism which is abundant in Rice’s novel. The second part covers the subject of identity and Louis’ quest to find out what and why he is. Next the issue of family within the vampyric world is examined using the family unit that Louis, Lestat and Claudia make as its basis. Lastly the question of why the ‘gender-free’ love which is present in Interview With The Vampire is important to the vampire genre is answered.

Abstract:
Known to most as Dracula, the vampire is revealing and resilient monster whose diegetic existence predates Stoker's novel, and that has become a key figure of popular culture. From folklore to fiction and from shadow to ligjhte, its evolution is indicative of the times and societies in wich it return to life. Equally transgressive and normative, its avatars play a cathartic role aas they epitomize rejection of human, natural and divine laws, but also the reiteration of the rules and the creation of literary canons. This diachronic study focused on "Carmilla" (1872), "Dracula" (1897) and Anne Rice's vampires shows that their adventures induce reflection on both the consequences of wrongdoing and the validity of norms, on the essence of human nature and hubris, and the liberating fucntion of fictional characters, particulary monsters

Abstract

In this essay I look at the change in the symbolic function of vampires, and to see this I use

Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat. My argument is that the

difference between Dracula and Lestat is basically that they represent different ideologies,

with Dracula being an imperialist, and Lestat being an anarchist. The difference is shown by

taking examples from the text of the two novels, and also taking information about the

ideologies, and seeing if the actions and thoughts of the characters match the suggested

ideology.

First, the essay looks at Dracula and his connection with imperialism, and then it turns to

Lestat and his connection with anarchism.

The conclusion is that the facts derived from the novels make it quite clear where the

political hearts of the vampires lie.

Abstract:

The creatures known as vampires have inspired authors for several hundred years. These beings are stereotypically described as belonging to a “nocturnal species” who live “in shadows” and drink “our lives in secrecy” (Auerbach 1). However, they have by now appeared so often in literary works, and in so many different shapes and sizes, that they are much too nuanced to be called ‘stereotypes.’

This essay will make a historical comparison between two fictional vampires, one hundred years apart, in order to show that a change has taken place when it comes to how vampires as fictional characters have been portrayed in terms of their appearance, their psychology, and their roles in society. The first novel chosen is, for obvious reasons, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was written at the turn of the nineteenth century by a male author and is probably the first novel that comes into mind when the word vampire is mentioned. The second novel, The Vampire Lestat, was written almost a century later, in 1986, by a female author, who, to readers of vampire fiction, is a worthy successor of Stoker. Her name is Anne Rice, best known for her debut novel Interview with the Vampire (1976).

The two novels are naturally chosen because of their similarities, but perhaps even more so because of their differences. Dracula is a typically Victorian Gothic novel, which is set in the remote mountains of Transylvania, and in the modern capital London, contemporary to when the novel was published. It is written in epistolary form but never allows for the main character, Count Dracula, to defend or explain himself and his actions in a first-person narrative.

The Vampire Lestat, on the other hand, is a Neo-Gothic novel that focus less on conventional Gothic elements, for example gloomy settings, and more on the psychological aspects of what it is like to actually be a vampire. Unlike Dracula, it is the main character’s fictional autobiography in which he recalls his life in France, his transformation into a vampire, and his current career in the United States as a famous rock star. Nina Auerbach calls it “a series of temporal regressions in which Lestat . . . embarks on a backward quest out of the knowable world” (172).

Both novels used in this analysis are thus part of the Gothic genre, one being a Victorian Gothic and the other Neo-Gothic, but there are significant differences between the two. I will investigate how these differences reveal themselves when it comes to setting and plot. However, the novels are similar in that they present two male vampires who belong to the nobility and have lived on through the centuries. The vampires both want to be where the power is, which means, in the case of Stoker’s Dracula, that he tries to conquer nineteenth-century London and seduce a young intelligent woman named Mina. Lestat, on the other hand, wants to become a famous twentieth-century rock star in the United States and simply have a good time while being a vampire (Auerbach 6).

The aim of this essay is to investigate what is typical of the genres that the two novels belong to and determine what has changed in the vampires’ physical appearance, their manners and their ability to adapt to modern society. In the first section of the essay I will give a description of the typical elements of the Gothic and the Neo-Gothic genres and then compare them in order to make a generic description of the two novels, Dracula and The Vampire Lestat. Vampire fiction will be treated as a sub-genre to the Gothic genre. In the succeeding two sections I will make comparative analyses of the two novels, particularly of the main characters, in order to describe the similarities and differences between the two and study how the vampire character has changed during the last century. Much of the discussion, especially regarding Dracula, will be based on Cesare Lombroso’s concept of the ‘criminal man,’ and various modern scholars’ opinion that the vampire is seen as an outcast and a threat to society.

Nathanson, Shelby. "Bite Me: Sadomasochistic Gender Relations in Contemporary Vampire Literature." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2014. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/1629.

Full text
Abstract:
While the term sadomasochism might conjure cursory images of whips, chains, and leather-clad fetishists, this thesis delves deeper into sadomasochistic theory to analyze dynamics of power and powerlessness represented by a chosen sample of literary relationships. Using two contemporary works of vampire literature—Anne Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series—I examine how power is structured by and between male and female characters (and vampires and humans), and particularly emphasize the patriarchal messages these works' regressive sexual politics engender. Psychoanalysis and feminist theory are employed to support my overarching argument following the gendered dynamics of male sadism and female masochism (and vampire sadism and human masochism), as this dyad reflects men's and women's "normalized" roles of power and powerlessness, respectively, in today's society. Sadomasochistic relationships as depicted in this literature are created through mutual contracts or, what I refer to as, sociocultural sadomasochism to reflect the gendered power imbalances inherent in patriarchy. By concluding with readers' responses to these franchises, this thesis further attempts to determine why such unequal and oppressive relationships are desirable. Since vampires as Gothic figures embody what specific cultures dread yet desire, this literature possesses frightening implications—gender roles are conservative and masculinity is privileged in fiction and, by extension, in twenty-first-century American culture.

Liang, Yan. "An Ex Ante Analysis of the Effects of Transgenic Rice on Farm Households’ Nutritional Vulnerability in Bangladesh." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27841.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite concerted efforts at agricultural development over many years, millions of people in developing countries still suffer from poverty and under-nutrition. New crop varieties, such as those released during the green revolution in Asia, increased farmersâ income and reduced the level of under-nutrition. In recent years, while the speed of the development of conventional breeding technology has slowed, biotechnology has developed rapidly. In 2005, about 8.5 million farmers in 21 countries grew transgenic crops. Transgenic rice has not been commercially released on a large scale, but progress has been made in developing varieties with potential to increase yield and reduce input costs. In this context, this research aims to provide empirical evidence on the potential effects of introducing transgenic rice on farm householdsâ income and nutritional well-being in Bangladeshâ including the impacts on their current nutritional status and nutritional vulnerability over time. To this end, two econometric models are constructed and estimated. A farm household model is employed to project farm householdsâ production and consumption responses to introducing improved rice varieties such as transgenic rice. The model estimates the profit effect of introducing transgenic rice. The influence of the profit effect on farmersâ consumption decisions is then considered. Due to the ex ante nature of this research and data limitations, the effects of transgenic rice are assumed to be similar to that of previous high yielding varieties (HYVs), and the impact of transgenic rice on farm household profit is assumed to be similar to the effect of the percentage of rice area in HYVs and the yield effect of transgenic rice is the same as HYVs. On the production side, the supply of three outputsâ rice, all other crops and animal productsâ and demand of labor and fertilizer were estimated. On the consumption side, both poor and non-poor householdsâ demand for rice, wheat/other food, pulse, oil, vegetables/fruits, meat/egg/ milk, fish, and spices were estimated. Based on the parameter estimates, the calorie intake and protein intake elasticities with respect to introducing transgenic rice were computed. The results indicate that the total profit elasticity with respect to the percentage of rice area in HYVs is 0.08. The calorie elasticity with respect to the percentage of rice area in HYVs ranges from 0.062 in non-poor to 0.074 in poor households, and the protein elasticity ranges from 0.075 in non-poor to 0.084 in poor households. The results indicate that transgenic rice is likely to play a positive role in improving farm householdsâ nutritional status in terms of total calorie/protein intake. The magnitude, however, is likely to be moderate, if only the profit effect is considered. A consumption forecasting model is used to examine farmersâ nutritional vulnerabilityâ a probabilistic concept defined as â having a high probability now of suffering a shortfall in the futureâ . It is assumed that when exposed to risk, farmersâ consumption decisions have already considered their risk coping strategies. The effect of transgenic rice is reflected by its impact on farm income. Farm householdsâ calorie intake in the future (hunger season) was predicted by a multivariate regression function with the logarithmic daily per resident calorie intake as the dependent variable. The independent variables include variables that represent householdsâ income, flood exposure, assets, and demographic composition. Farm householdsâ nutritional vulnerability profiles, based on the estimation of ex ante mean and variance, indicate that vulnerability exists among surveyed rice farm households. The model also predicts that the income increase induced by introducing transgenic rice will reduce each individual householdâ s probability of suffering a future consumption shortfall and subsequently will reduce its vulnerability. The overall vulnerability profile of farm households improves in Bangladesh.

Alpuerto, Vida-Lina Esperanza Battad. "Economic Impact Analysis of Marker-Assisted Breeding in Rice." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34340.

Full text
Abstract:
Abiotic stresses such as salinity and phosphorous (P) deficiency are major yield-limiting factors for rice, particularly on marginal lands. Marker-aided backcrossing (MAB), enabled by advances in genomics and molecular mapping in recent years, is said to be a more precise, time-saving, and cost-effective way to develop rice varieties that can withstand these abiotic stresses than conventional breeding. The study employs the economic surplus approach to measure the benefits of MAB for salinity tolerance in rice for Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Philippines, and for rice with tolerance to P-deficient soils in Indonesia. At a 5% discount rate, the benefits over 15 years of planting salt-tolerant varieties amount to $226.9 million in the Philippines, $3.666 billion in Bangladesh, $4.848 billion in India, and $895.7 million in Indonesia. The gains from growing varieties that can withstand P deficient soils in Indonesia amount to $2.070 billion. The incremental benefits from completing the salt-tolerant and P-deficient tolerant breeding cycles 2 years earlier are $340.5 million in Bangladesh and $192.1 in Indonesia, respectively. In India, $227.0 million is gained even if MAB develops salt-tolerant varieties just a year earlier. The additional gains from completing the salt-tolerant rice breeding cycle 4 years earlier are $40.3 million in the Philippines and $158.9 in Indonesia. In general, the gains from saline- (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines) and P-deficient (Indonesia) tolerant rice are reduced by 5%, 9%, 14%, and 18% when MAB breeding cycle is delayed by one, two, three, and four years, respectively. In India, there is 3%, 7%, 10%, and 13% loss in benefits from salt-tolerant rice for every additional year of delay in the MAB breeding cycle.

Hareau, Guy G. "The Adoption of Genetically Modified Organisms in Uruguay's Agriculture: An Ex-Ante Assessment of Potential Benefits." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34179.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study analyzes the economic impact of the introduction of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Uruguay's agriculture. Using a partial equilibrium framework the impacts of transgenic varieties are simulated for two crops, rice and potatoes, in small open and closed economies respectively. The model accounts for the presence of market imperfections created by the monopolistic behavior of the genes' patent owner. The change in economic surplus generated after the adoption of the new technology is projected to be positive, although the seed markup charged by the monopolist reduces the surplus compared to a perfectly competitive market. Total deadweight losses and domestic losses are found to increase with the seed premium, as additional monopolist profits are extracted out of the country. Adoption decreases with the seed premium, further reducing the domestic consumer and producer surplus. The results of the study suggest an active role for national technology policies and for the agricultural R&D system in Uruguay to generate conditions that attract the technology's owner to a small market while at the same time reducing the potential losses that monopoly power creates .

Abstract:
This dissertation is about the literary gothic, especially in literatures in English language. The main theme focuses on the figure of the vampire. Such a choice is the result of my readings of the first appearance of the vampire in prose fiction. The vampire arose in the legends from Eastern and Central Europe. Starting from the 18th century, I come to the present, in North-American soil, where the narrative of Interview with the Vampire takes place. This novel will be the center of this dissertation on the literary gothic and the vampire. Composed of three chapters, this work deals with the origins of the legend of the vampire and its insertion in literature; with the human body and the hybrid body of the vampire. Lastly, I analyse the novel that is in the center of my research, in a dialogue with the previous chapters

Abstract:
Research and development of Bt rice in Southeast Asia has been overshadowed by the contentious debate over the potential release of transgenic food crops into the region. The study provides empirical evidence on the potential size and distribution of economic benefits of adopting Bt Indica rice in the Philippines and Vietnam through the years 2000 to 2020. Total welfare gains from Bt rice are projected at 618.8 million USD (discounted at 5 percent) and aggregate benefits by region are projected at 269.6 million USD for the Philippines, 329.1 million USD for Vietnam, and 20.1 million USD for the rest of the world. Simulation results indicate that producers in both countries will capture 66.5 percent of the total welfare effect from Bt rice adoption, 25.9 percent will accrue to consumers, 3 percent to the rest of the world, and the loss in Philippine government revenue accounts for 4.6 percent of the total welfare effect. The study also reports how other factors will determine the size and distribution of economic benefits of Bt rice.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The current investigation is about Manuel Zeno Gandía's stance towards José de Diego during the 1890-1918 period. The primary objective of this work is to demonstrate that the Chronicles of a Sick World (as roughly translated. Crónicas de un mundo enfermo, in Spanish) by Zeno Gandía was written in code to obscure the true character in display: José de Diego's. The investigation considers the political thought of Manuel Zeno Gandía which had until then been undiscovered, and the critique expressed towards José de Diego. To back my objective, it was necessary to decipher the codes appearing in Zeno Gandía's chronicle-novels. To decipher them, I studied the life and legacies of both Zeno Gandía and compared their political discourses, life, and literary works. The historical aspect is factually backed with multiple primary and secondary sources from the time period, like published literature and manuscripts of Zeno Gandía and de Diego and other sources like newspapers and documents released by the political parties each had participated in. What I found is that in Crónicas de un mundo enfermo Manuel Zeno Gandía utilizes a series of clues as literary resources that points to José de Diego being whom is represented. An example of this is the use of the constant allusions used in Crónicas to de Diego's life and work. Another important find is that Zeno Gandía directed his critique towards de Diego because in him he found a contradictory personality, because though seeming to have certain radical political views, when put in practice de Diego turned out to be more of a moderate, in Zeno Gandía's thought. Lastly, Manuel Zeno Gandía is viewed in a new light- as a political militant, participant of the Partido Autonomista (autonomous party), Partido Autonomista Ortodoxo (orthodox autonomous party), Partido Republicano (republican party), Partido Unión de Puerto Rico (union party of Puerto Rico), and the first Partido de la Independencia de Puerto Rico (first independence party of Puerto Rico). Previously he had only been studied and regarded as a writer.

Ramey, Margaret E. "The quest for the fictional Jesus : Gospel rewrites, Gospel (re)interpretation, and Christological portraits within Jesus novels." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1861.

Full text
Abstract:
Jesus' story has been retold in various forms and fashions for centuries. Jesus novels, a subset of the historical fiction genre, are one of the latest means of not only re-imagining the man from Galilee but also of rewriting the canonical Gospels. This thesis explores the Christological portraits constructed in four of those novels while also using the novels to examine the intertextual play of these Gospel rewrites with their Gospel progenitors. Chapter 1 offers a prolegomenon to the act of fictionalizing Jesus that discusses the relationship between the person and his portraits and the hermeneutical circle created by these texts as they both rewrite the Gospels and stimulate a rereading of them. It also establishes the "preposterous" methodology that will be used when reexamining the Gospels "post" reading the novels. Chapters 2 to 5 offer four case studies of "complementing" and "competing" novels and the techniques they use to achieve these aims: Anne Rice's Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt; Neil Boyd's The Hidden Years; Nino Ricci's Testament; and José Saramago's The Gospel according to Jesus Christ. Chapter 6 begins an examination of a specific interpretive circle based upon Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. Beginning with the synoptic accounts of that event, the chapter then turns to how Jesus' testing has been reinterpreted and presented in two of the novels. Returning to the Gospel of Matthew's version of the Temptation, chapter 7 offers a "preposterous" examination of that pericope, which asks novel questions of the text and its role with Matthew's narrative context based on issues raised by the Gospel rewrites. The thesis concludes by suggesting that Jesus novels, already important examples of the reception history of the Gospels, can also play a helpful role in re-interpreting the Gospels themselves.

Search mortality in the glorious St. Anna Parish, hinterland of Rio Grande do Norte in the time frame 1788-1838 is the main objective of this research. Questions that the research aims to answer are: how many were after? Data parish deaths allow us to study mortality in Town? To conduct the research, first appealed to the population maps of the years 1777, 1810, 1811, 1824, 1844, 1853; censuses of 1872 and 1890. As well, the first two books of burials / deaths of the Parish, the first dating from 1788 to 1811 and the second from 1812 to 1838 and a book of baptism 1803-1806. Among the findings it was realized that, for now, the question of knowing, "After all, how many were?" Still cannot be answered, because during the analysis we noticed a high rate of underreporting, demonstrated through a study of the first infant mortality, in which the records we have was very high, which goes against the pre-transitional period, but with the exercise of inverse projection found the opposite, a population that would have a life expectancy higher. Demonstrating the problem of underreporting. Infant deaths occur mainly with the male children in the first months of the year due to infectious causes, and in the early days and weeks, we raised a hypothesis is that these deaths have as a backdrop the poor condition of the mother leading to poor training child, thus leading to his early death

Little, Philippa Susan. "Images of self : a study of feminine and feminist subjectivity in the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Margaret Atwood and Adrienne Rich, 1950-1980." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 1990. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/1501.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores the poetry (and some prose) of Plath, Sexton, Atwood and Rich in terms of the changing constructions of self-image predicated upon the female role between approx. 1950-1980.1 am particularly concerned with the question of how the discourses of femininity and feminism contribute to the scope of the images of the self which are presented. The period was chosen because it involved significant upheaval and change in terms of women's role and gender identity. The four poets' work spans this period of change and appears to some extent generally characteristic of its social, political and cultural contexts in America, Britain and Canada. (Other poets' work, for example Rukeyser, Lorde, Levertov, is included too. ) The poets were not chosen to illustrate a pre-feminist vs. feminist opposition since a major concern is to explore what I see to be the symbiotic relation between femininity and feminism (as also between orthodoxy and heresy). However the thesis is organised chronologically because periodisation is important for a consideration of the poetry's social setting. In wanting to connect the poetry with cultural and political circumstances as much as possible I have taken Edward Said's assertion of a text's position of 'being in the world', its potential as a cultural product to help reshape reality, and its value as a 'powerful weapon of both materialism and consciousness'. This is the starting point for the study which is circular and cumulative in shape, fundamentally thematic, though each chapter is a chronological exploration of the work of one specific poet, beginning with Plath and completing with Rich. A conclusion attempts to pull the strands of each together and consider the implications raised. The thesis has four general concerns which run through its particular focus on each poet. The first involves the relations between cultural practice and ideology; the second involves the ideology of gender (through exploration of femininity and feminism); the third involves authorial ideology (through the construction of self-image in relation to femininity and feminism) while the fourth involves these concerns in terms of the overall arena of women's struggle for meaning and selfdetermination in cultural practice. More specific elements of the study include collating and comparing self-images and attempting to make connections or chart changes where images such as witch, queen, handmaid, shamaness, goddess, earth mother, whore, madwoman, etc., re-occur. Usage of myth (particularly Persephone). the Gothic, 'and articulation of lesbian desire are also explored. The emergence of a female 'hero' self-image, in opposition to 'victim', seems to be a corollary of the impact , of feminism in Rich's poetry particularly, but this tendency can be traced back through Plath. I explore the celebration of nature and the power of essentialism in the construction of heroic female images, particularly in the figure of the mother flowing with milk at the centre of 'ecriture feminine'. The concluding chapter suggests that femininity did not constitute such a repressive constraint on self-image and writing practice for women as perhaps might be supposed; and that feminism, while opening up many empowering changes for women, has raised further disturbing and unresolved questions about identity, and even helped, in some of its aspects, to create a new 'orthodoxy' in which various aspects of experience cannot easily be articulated. My example is Rich's later work where it seems to admit itself limited by its own initially liberating strategies and looks further on towards new 'heresies.'

Lindsey, Dakota Raine. "GEOCHEMISTRY OF ARTIFICALLY MATURED ANNA SHALE: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE USE OF REDOX-SENSITIVE GEOCHEMICAL PROXIES IN MATURE ORGANIC-RICH SHALES." OpenSIUC, 2018. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/2454.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the validity of geochemical paleoredox proxies in mature organic-rich shales. Classically, Fe-S-Corg ternary diagrams and C-S crossplots have been used to differentiate between oxic, dysoxic, and anoxic/euxinic conditions, but should be limited to immature shales due to the loss of organic carbon during thermal maturation. Trace metal proxies are also used to elucidate paleoredox conditions, but their stability in mature shales has yet to be assessed adequately. As it would be difficult to find a shale bed with an immature and post-mature end-member, that was deposited under assumedly invariant depositional conditions, a modified version of open-system hydrous pyrolysis (OSHP) was developed. The design of this apparatus allows for a small continuous flow of only liquid-phase water to be maintained throughout the entire artificial maturation experiment, with the intention of experimentally mimicking maturation in a sedimentary basin. Using the OSHP apparatus, the Anna Shale (Pennsylvanian age) was matured artificially at experimental temperatures ranging from 300 to 360℃ for up to 72 hours. These conditions resulted in increases in vitrinite reflectance from 0.47 to 1.83% Rr and Tmax from 425 to 520℃, indicating the immature shale was matured through the oil window and into the gas window. With increased maturity, the shale exhibits an approximate loss in mass of up to 20%, likely due to the liberation of hydrocarbons and the depletion of sulfur from 2.03 to ~0.1 wt. %. The intention of the OSHP design was to mimic maturation as would occur in a sedimentary basin. However, comparison of the inorganic geochemistry of the artificially matured shale to that of shales matured by normal burial maturation versus intrusive events suggests that, based on the significant depletion of sulfur (i.e., pyrite), the current design and run parameters better replicates the extreme heating conditions associated with intrusion of organic-rich rocks. Under these conditions, the loss of sulfur and carbon demonstrates that Fe-S-Corg ternary diagrams and C-S crossplots would no longer be valid as redox indicators. Furthermore, increases in the concentrations of Ni and Co by nearly an order of magnitude and a doubling of Cr and V contents from the unaltered to artificially matured shales cannot be explained by increases in relative abundance due to mass loss alone. It is possible that the 316-stainless steel used to construct the OSHP reactor body became unstable during artificial maturation experiments and acted as a contaminant source of TMs. Therefore, further investigation is required to establish whether different run parameters could more closely mimic normal burial conditions and to explore the use of different materials for the construction of the OSHP apparatus that would better maintain resistance to corrosion.

Abstract:

The knowledge that school principals acquire on the subject of leadership skills will provide them with a solid foundation for leading schools towards the success of their students, be it academic or social. The aim of this qualitative research, designed as a case study, was to determine how well prepared a school's principal is in leadership practices and in the competencies that are promoted by Emotional Intelligence to deal with the situations that take place in schools. During the investigative process the strategies that a principal uses to handle difficult situations were identified, as well as the insight that a principal has as a leader, the knowledge and mastery of leadership theories shown, and the understanding of Emotional Intelligence competencies. The data collection sources were interviews, reflexive diaries, and document reviews, which were used with the study sample. This sample was comprised of five principals of various school levels in the central area of the Island.

The findings indicate that most of the principals who participated in this study do not have a strong foundation in leadership skills and/or leadership competencies. The findings suggest coordination between the Puerto Rico Department of Education of (PRDE) and universities with the purpose of having masters programs that offer courses that strengthen the teaching of the diverse theories of leadership styles and that offer emotional intelligence courses aimed at educational environments, in a way that enables principals to be proficient in these skills and competencies when they assume their duties. Likewise, the findings recommend that PRDE continues to reinforce this foundation through professional workshops that will build upon the knowledge acquired; this will result in school principals that are well prepared in leadership skills and emotional intelligence competencies that will enable them to work effectively with the entire school community.

Materials known as technical textiles can be defined as structures designed and developed to meet specific functional requirements of various industry sectors, which is the case in automotive and aerospace industries, and other specific applications. Therefore, the purpose of this work presents the development and manufacture of polymer composite with isophthalic polyester resin. The reinforcement of the composite structure is a technical textile fabric made from high performance fibers, aramid (Kevlar 49) and glass fiber E. The fabrics are manufactured by the same method, with the aim of improving the tensile strength of the resulting polymer composite material. The fabrics, we developed some low grammage technical textile structures in laboratory scale and differentiated-composition type aramid (100%), hybrid 1 aramid fiber / glass (65/35%) and hybrid 2 aramid fiber / glass (85/15% ) for use as a reinforcing element in composite materials with unsaturated isophthalic polyester matrix. The polymer composites produced were tested in uniaxial tensile fracture surface and it?s evaluated by SEM. The purpose of this work characterize the performance of polymer composites prepared, identifying changes and based on resistance to strain corresponding to the mechanical behavior. The objectives are to verify the capability of using this reinforcement structure, along with the use of high performance fibers and resin in terms of workability and mechanical strength; verify the adherence of the fiber to the matrix and the fracture surface by electron microscopy scanning and determination of tensile strength by tensile test. The results indicate that, in a comparative study to the response of uniaxial tensile test for tensile strength of the composites and the efficiency of the low percentage of reinforcement element, being a technical textile fabric structure that features characteristic of lightness and low weight added in polymer composites

Abstract:

"Elements of Gothic Literature in the Works by Stephenie Mayer (Twilight Saga), Anne Rice (Vampire Chronicles) and Tim Burton." Master's thesis, 2017. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-364459.

Abstract:
The purpose of this diploma thesis is an analysis of selected texts of three popular American authors (Stephenie Mayer, Anne Rice, Tim Burton), who develop the tradition of Gothic literature in their prose writing and film making. This thesis attempts to show how the particular Gothic elements are used in selected works (ex.: the vampire or monster character, the theme of violence or death). In the introductory theoretical chapter the specific character of Anglo-American Gothic prose is explained, and in the following chapters the separate themes are analysed. In this context the literary influences, as well as the originality of the stories, are considered (Horace Walpole, Mary Shelley, Ch. R. Maturin, Bram Stoker), and the contribution of the analysed texts for the coming development of Gothic literature is assessed.

Abstract:
This thesis brings together three of Anne Rice's novels from The Vampire Chronicles series – The Vampire Lestat, Memnoch the Devil and Blood Canticle – in order to study the evolution of her critique of religion in her writing. A precise and complete examination of Lestat de Lioncourt, the series' main protagonist, allows the reader to better understand the impact of his spiritual transformation on Rice's literary career as a whole. In The Vampire Lestat, Lestat's rejection of religious beliefs as well as the deconstruction and eroticization of traditional religious rituals hint at the influence of atheism. Memnoch the Devil represents the transition between Lestat's refusal to believe in religion and his subsequent return to the Catholic faith. Finally, Blood Canticle symbolizes both the protagonist's and the writer's return to the faith, in addition to the conclusion of Rice's Vampire Chronicles. The analysis uses elements from Rice's biography to indicate religion's importance in her works without considering these novels as autobiographies.

Abstract:
Anne Rice writes popular fiction. She is best known for her iconic Vampire Chronicles series. This thesis focuses on the first three volumes of this series: Interview with the Vampire (1976), The Vampire Lestat (1985), and The Queen of the Damned (1988). The main objective of this thesis is to show that whilst Rice's novels often seem very liberal, an examination of her subtext reveals a conservative message. This message helps entrench socio-cultural and political hegemonies because it does not challenge the status quo. In order to see how these conservative leanings are entrenched by Rice, this thesis examines archetypes of the female and the Feminine. Louis is male, but can be viewed as a Feminine character because of his meek subservience to Lestat (the protagonist of the series). Claudia is their daughter, but she is also a woman trapped in a child's body. Claudia seems to have great intellectual freedom, but she is trapped within her body and cannot mature. Gabrielle is Lestat‟s mother. When Gabrielle becomes a vampire, Rice tries to empower Gabrielle by androgynizing her character. However, we find that this androgyny is not empowering because Gabrielle returns to her role as a mother. Akasha is the ancient queen and source of vampirism. She wants to bring about a radical, gynocentric world by killing most men. But subtextually, Akasha‟s defeat represents the defeat of feminism in favour of patriarchy. Despite the seemingly liberal nature of the texts, subtextually there is a trend towards negating the power these characters carry in the text. To explore the flux between the text and the subtext, an array of post-modern reading tools and theoretical approaches have been used. The primary reading strategies include a close reading of the novels, informed by Feminist perspectives, together with other reading strategies such as, Queer Theory, Marxism, deconstruction and the role of the Fantastic. Little academic study has been devoted to Rice‟s work. Her work shows deep philosophical and artistic integrity which lends an elegance and beauty to her texts, but this is undermined by the conservative undertones of her work.

Curry, Kendra Wynne. "Creative catalysts : a narrative investigation of pivotal learning experience through conversation with six contemporary artists." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-08-1912.

Abstract:
This thesis is a narrative study that examines significant life experiences of six living artists that were pivotal in their decision to pursue careers in the arts. Although the examples found in these conversations are not exhaustive—many factors play into the individuals sense of identity and agency—they serve to give voice to the multiplicity of the learning experience, underscoring that creative education occurs in the home, the community, and among social groups as frequently as it does in the classroom. Through direct, open-ended conversations with artists, research explores the setting of upbringing and education, the pivotal experiences—catalysts—that propelled these individuals into art careers, and impact of their experience on both creative practice and notions of art learning. Interviews encompass artists whose work is located in public spaces, natural landscapes, and urban environments as often as it appears in the traditional exhibition settings, whose work is both collaborative and socially constructed. They comprise Rick Lowe, artist and founder of Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas whose community-centered social sculpture expands on our cultural assumptions about the artist and Anne Wallace, a public artist whose early work as a human right activist and bi-cultural experiences translate into videos about the complexities of the United States/Mexico border. It includes Vincent Valdez, a self-described “hyper-realist” who depicts his home city and composite life experiences of his family through allegorical paintings and drawings; Marie Lorenz, an artist explorer whose interest in urban waterways brings her work into the waters of forgotten canals and rivers; of Robert Pruitt, who critiques ever-changing political landscapes, conceptions of history, and globalism through hybrid drawings and sculptures; and Franco Mondini-Ruiz who fuses aesthetics of high and low in installations and creative economy widely accessible to people both within and outside the confines of the art world. Through narrative conversation, this thesis enriches overlapping theories that encompass our understandings of education and learning—mentorship, experiential learning, the aesthetic experience, place-based learning, communities of practice—through lived example, underscoring learning as a socially constructed phenomenon. Experiences of learning, unique and wholly individualized, contribute to a one’s sense of self and agency; in the case of the six artists featured in this study, creative experiences contribute to their identity as “artist” and motivated their pursuit of lifework and career.
