Abstract:
Few – if any - would deny that cartography is one of the most essential disciplines within the multi-layered scope of urban history. Elizabeth Baigent pays tribute to the possibilities and problems posed by maps in her ‘Fact or fiction? Town maps as aids and snares to the historian’, Archives: The J. of the British Records Association, 29, 110 (2004), 24–37. By looking at a map of Gloucester, compiled in 1455, and two late medieval Bristol maps (one by Robert Ricart, the other by William Smith), she outlines their usefulness as well as the problems that the modern urban historian faces. Abstract:
The year 2005 gave us, through two anniversaries (1855 Fick and 1905 Einstein), the wish to go back to these authors’ seminal papers, whose aftermath had been (and still is) prodigious. This essay describes the contents of these articles: the macroscopic approach with Fick equations and the microscopic one with the Einstein-Smoluchowski random walk (Brownian motion) equation, while considering them in their historical context. Some further developments are briefly iscussed.

Abstract:
For Japan and Korea, 2005 held anniversaries perhaps more fraught than commemorations Japan shared with many other nations last year. Throughout the world, it was the sixtieth anniversary of the end of World War II, but Japan was not at war with Korea in 1945. Rather, Japan's August 1945 surrender to the Allies ended the nation's harsh colonization of Korea, an occupation that began in 1905 when Japan won protectorate rights over Korea as a war prize for defeating Russia. Recognizing 2005 in centennial tones was not in the cards, however, because the history and legacy of Japan's colonization
