Abstract:

Anodontia is a rare orofacial complex developmental malformation. In contrast to normal tooth germ with roundhypo echogenic structure arranged in an arch-like manner in alveolar bone, anodontia shows an arch-like hyper echogenic structure without any dental alveoli. Prenatal ultrasound is a reliable method for detecting anodontia inearly gestational age.

Abstract:

Background / Aim. Data regarding tooth absence among Romania military personnel are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental anomalies among military students at a military technical academy in Bucharest, Romania. Methods. A cohort of 318 military students enrolled the study. Each participant underwent an extensive evaluation of their oro-dental health status based on guidelines of the EGOHID II (European Global Oral Health Indicators Development II Project). Results. Anodontia was discovered in 6/318 participants (prevalence rate, 1.9%), namely 4 women (prevalence among women, 4.6%) and 2 men (prevalence among men, 0.87%). Five of the six patients were previously undiagnosed. The most commonly affected teeth were second premolars (n = 8), followed by first premolars (n = 4) and second permanent molars (n = 2). Premolar anodontia was equally common in the maxilla and the mandible; both instances of molar anodontia were in the mandible. None of the participants with anodontia had remaining temporary teeth. A brief overview of the case of two of the presently diagnosed patients, who presented with inferior bilateral second molar anodontia and quadruple canine inclusion and a quadruple second premolar anodontia, is included. Conclusion. Military students in Romania would benefit from systematic dental evaluation and long-term monitoring prior to the enrollment the Military Academy.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a heritable condition and represents a multifarious group of diseases comprising different clinical signs and symptoms. The ED occurs as a result of disturbances in the ectoderm of the evolving embryo. Agenesis of teeth or anodontia is also the result of disturbance in this process, which prevents the proliferation of tooth buds. In the present case, an 18-month-old child with history of congenital anomalies (CAs), severely delayed developmental milestones, and mental retardation presented with complete anodontia and ED. The CA included pulmonary stenosis, pulmonary valvar regurgitation, ventricular septal defect (VSD), absence of grips, absence of head-holding capacity, inability to sit, simian crease (R), visual impairment with corectopia, blepharitis, lagophthalmos with cortical visual impairment, telecanthus, hypotrichosis, hypertelorism, high philtrum, high arched palate, degenerated nails, and depressed third toes. Routine karyotyping via peripheral blood culture revealed a ring chromosome 18, which was confirmed de novo after parental karyotyping. Although a straightforward association between r(18) and anodontia is yet to be established, it is apparent that anodontia coupled with multiple CA and systemic complications was caused by chromosomal/genetic mutations in the present case, and thus, this report strongly recommends phenotypic and genotypic examination in dental management in such a complex scenario. Abstract:

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare hereditary disorder with a characteristic physiognomy. The case of a 5-year-old child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and complete anodontia is presented. Because of the anodontia and the need for treatment at an early age, the prosthetic management of such a young child can be difficult. Complete dentures were provided to encourage a normal psychological development and to improve the function of the stomatognathic system.

Abstract Aim: This article is set on presenting various types of anodontia, the most frequent types found in a dental office and to bring awareness to parents and also the dentists on the signs of agenesis and its consequences in time. Material and method: for a year (1st September 2017 – 31th August 2018) various patients with different types and locations of anodontia were diagnosed correctly by an oral and radiological exam in a dental office. Results. Anodontia is found almost equally in both sexes without major differences between males and females. Real agenesis is most frequently found in the second premolars – study reports show that this is because of phylogenetic evolution. False agenesis is more frequent in the 3rd molars because they are most likely extracted. Third molars are usually extracted because they don’t have space to emerge on the maxilla or mandible or they emerge in a vicious position. Canine agenesis has a very low frequency. Conclusions: It is very important to do a thorough check-up and a correct case history followed by radiological investigations each time a suspicion of a possible anodontia exists. It can only be certainly diagnosed by having a full oral and radiological exam. Also a difference must be made between the real, false and pseudoanaodontia.

Abstract. Title of the paper: Genetic analysis of congenital hypotrichosis with anodontia in cattle In three male German Holstein calves, black and white spotted, congenital hypotrichosis and nearly complete anodontia was observed. The pedigree of the probands being maternal halfsibs and grandmatemal grandsons supports a monogenic, X-linked recessive inheritance. Chromosomal Xq-deletions were not detected. Similar congenital anomalies are known in tabby mice and in humans as anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EDI, EDA). The human gene causative for EDI and the Tabby gene are located on the X-chromosome. Therefore, the moleculargenetic marker analysis in our material was restricted on the X-chromosome. Using identical by descend mapping based on 20 microsatellites, we were able to identify an exclusively Joint genomic region on the long arm of the X-chromosome among the affected calves. The putative location of the gene locus for congenital hypotrichosis with anodontia maps into the region of the marker BM4604 on position 76.5 cM of the X-chromosome.

Samples were taken and analyzed by electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy. Glochidia were 311, 8μm total length (TL), 331,7μm totalheight (TH), and 251,1μm hinge dorsal length (HDL). Anodonta has 21species reported for the Panamica province, and A. luteola has five synonyms, often used in different reports.

Among the molluscs of the family Unionidae extensivity of infestation by the helminth Aspidogaster conchicola (Trematoda, Aspidogastridae) is the highest in Unio tumidus and Anodonta anatina, and the lowest – in U. pictorum. The mites of the genus Unionicola (Arachnida, Unionicolidae) occur more often in species of the genus Anodonta and Pseudanodonta complanata than in species of Unio. The larvae of trematodes Bucephalus polymorphus (Trematoda, Bucephalidae) are more often identified in species of the genus Anodonta. The intensity of invasion of molluscs by the helminth A. conchicola was 1.0–5.6 ind./ind. (Unio – 1.0–3.3, Pseudanodonta – 3.0–5.6, Anodonta – 1.3–4.0 ind.), by the water mites Unionicola – 1–69 ind./ind. (Unio, Pseudanodonta – 1–11, Anodonta – 1–69). Due to the influence of aspidogastreans, the cytoplasmic vacuolization and hypertrophy of the cells of the pericardial epithelium and the layer of connective tissue was observed, which leads to a shrinkage of the upper side of the pericardium. Often, there was a nuclear pyknosis and, with deeper violations, their karyorrhexis and karyolysis. In the layer of connective tissue of pericardium of A. anatina encapsulated larvae of aspidogastereans were found. An increase in the cardiac index was observed in molluscs infested by aspidogastreans: the change in the index was the smallest in U. crassus (at 11.5%) and the largest in U. tumidus (at 54.1–61.0%). Smaller cardiac indexes are typical for molluscs with a lower intensity of infestation by aspidogastreans. Moderate intensity of infestation by this helminth (6–10 ind./ind.) caused an increase in the heart rate in molluscs (18.6–29.6%), high intensity (>10 ind./ind.) caused the decreasing of this indicator (14.5–24.0%). At low intensity of the mite (up to 20 individuals) and invasion of the trematode B. polymorphus (minor infections; part of the reproductive glands, populated by parasites, is less than 50%) the acceleration of ciliary beating and increasing of the duration of ciliary beating of the ciliated epithelium (1.4–2.6 times) were observed in species Anodonta and U. pictorum, at high intensity of invasion the inhibition of beating and reduction of the duration of ciliary beating of the ciliated epithelium in these species (45.9–57.4%) was observed. In the case of the general pathological process in the body of molluscs , the influence of parasites can cause the elimination of individuals with high intensity of infestation , which affects the absolute number and population density of molluscs.

The materials used in acrylic infantile overdenture must be non-toxic and shouldn’t have any negative influence in upgrowing children. The base of acrylic infantile overdenture is made of acrylic resin. The aim of the present study is to highlight the changing of regular acrylic infantile overdenture, at the age of 1 and a half, in order to allow the physiological growth of the children’s bones.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT The relationship between maxillary lateral incisor anodontia and the palatal displacement of unerupted maxillary canines cannot be considered as a multiple tooth abnormality with defined genetic etiology in order to be regarded as a “syndrome”. Neither were the involved genes identified and located in the human genome, nor was it presumed on which chromosome the responsible gene would be located. The palatal maxillary canine displacement in cases of partial anodontia of the maxillary lateral incisor is potentially associated with environmental changes caused by its absence in its place of formation and eruption, which would characterize an epigenetic etiology. The lack of the maxillary lateral incisor in the canine region means removing one of the reference guides for the eruptive trajectory of the maxillary canine, which would therefore, not erupt and /or impact on the palate. Consequently, and in sequence, it would lead to malocclusion, maxillary atresia, transposition, prolonged retention of the deciduous canine and resorption in the neighboring teeth. Thus, we can say that we are dealing with a set of anomalies and multiple sequential changes known as sequential development anomalies or, simply, sequence. Once the epigenetics and sequential condition is accepted for this clinical picture, it could be called “Maxillary Lateral Incisor Partial Anodontia Sequence.”

Abstract:

The aim of this work was to register the occurrence of Anodontites tenebricosus (Bivalvia: Mycetopodidae) in the Sapucaí river basin, municipality of São Joaquim da Barra, São Paulo state, Brazil, associating its occurrence to the environment in which they are found, besides providing conchological data to contribute to the identification of the species. Fifty one specimens of Anodontites tenebricosus were studied regarding their conchological and morphometrical aspects. Strong correlations were found between the morphometric variables, the correlation between 'length and height of the shell' being the most significant. The characteristics of the shells of A. tenebricosus found in the Sapucaí river basin resemble the descriptions of the species found in the literature; therefore, we are able to expand the area of occurrence of the species for the state of São Paulo.

Abstract:

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the incidence of dental anomalies in Brazilian patients with Down syndrome. A sample with 49 panoramic x-rays of syndromic patients aged 3 to 33 years (22 male and 27 female) was used. The characteristics of dental anomalies were observed in the panoramic radiographs in both the primary and permanent dentition, according to the ICD (International Classification of Diseases). The corresponding tables and percentile analysis were elaborated. There was a high incidence of syndromic patients with different types of anomalies, such as taurodontism (50%), proven anodontia (20.2%), suspected anodontia (10.7%), conic teeth (8.3%) and impacted teeth (5.9%). In conclusion, patients with Down syndrome presented a high incidence of dental anomalies and, in most cases, the same individual presented more than one dental anomaly.

Abstract:

Hypohidrotic (anhidrotic) ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a congenital syndrome characterized by sparse hair, oligodontia, and reduced sweating. It is estimated to affect at least one in 17000 people worldwide. We report a rare case of HED in a 14-year-old male child patient which extraorally manifested as alopecia, scanty eyebrow and eye lashes, frontal bossing, depressed nasal bridge, and full and everted lips. Intraoral examination revealed complete anodontia of the deciduous teeth and partial anodontia of the permanent teeth. It is usually inherited as an X-linked recessive trait caused by mutation in any of the three EDA pathway genes. X-linked and autosomal recessive forms are phenotypically similar; thus, identification of carriers of partial forms of the disorder in their families is the key to clarifying intrafamilial genetic transmission.

Abstract:

Haemocytes play a major role in molluscs immunity. Functional studies are, however, impaired by limited available experimental tools to identify and sort distinct haemocyte populations. Therefore, using nonlethal methods, we aimed at evaluating whether lectin staining combined with flow cytometry could be used to distinguish circulating haemocyte populations from two freshwater bivalves of the family Unionidae, the duck mussel (Anodonta anatina (L., 1758)) and the swan mussel (Anodonta cygnea (L., 1758)). Based on classical classification, haemocytes were distinguished as granulocytes and hyalinocytes and cytological features were visualized using transmission microscopy and staining techniques. Size, granularity, viability, and surface staining using lectins as specific probes were analysed by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. The microscopic proportions of granulocytes and hyalinocytes significantly differed, being of 70% and 30% for A. cygnea and of 85% and 15% for A. anatina, respectively. Two haemocyte populations were sorted by flow cytometry based on size and granularity and confirmed as granulocytes and hyalinocytes. Interestingly, two different granulocyte populations could be further discriminated in A. cygnea according to their binding affinity to wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA), whereas granulocytes of A. anatina all stained similarly. Our results show that WGA labelling combined with flow cytometry can be used to better discriminate Anodonta haemocyte populations and obtain purified populations for functional studies.

Abstract:

Phlebotomine sand flies are tiny, hairy, blood-sucking nematoceran insects that feed on a wide range of hosts. They are known as a principal vector of parasites, responsible for human and animal leishmaniasis worldwide. In Thailand, human autochthonous leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis have been reported. However, information on the vectors for Leishmania and Trypanosoma in the country is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to detect Leishmania and Trypanosoma DNA in field-caught sand flies from endemic areas (Songkhla and Phatthalung Provinces) and non-endemic area (Chumphon Province) of leishmaniasis. A total of 439 sand flies (220 females and 219 males) were collected. Head and genitalia dissection of female sandflies were done for morphology identification, and the remaining parts of those sand flies were then used for the detection of Leishmania and Trypanosoma parasites. The DNA was extracted from individual female sand flies. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) anneal, specific to the ITS1 and SSU rRNA gene regions, was used to detect Leishmania and Trypanosoma DNA, respectively. The positive PCR products were cloned and sequenced. The results showed that the female sand fly species in this study consisted of Sergentomyia khawi (35.9%); Se. anodontis (23.6%); Phlebotomus betisi (18.6%); Ph. kiangsuensis (9.5%); Ph. asperulus (6.4%); Se. barraudi (2.3%); 0.9% of each Se. indica, Ph. stantoni, and Ph. major major; and 0.5% of each Se. sylvatica and Ph. mascomai. The PCR and sequence analysis were able to detect Leishmania and Trypanosoma DNA in sand fly samples, which were identified as L. martiniquensis, 1/220 (0.45%) in Se. khawi, 3/220 (1.36%) of T. noyesi in Se. anodontis, and Ph. asperulus. Fourteen (6.36%) of the unidentified trypanosome species in Se. khawi, Se. indica, Se. anodontis, Ph. asperulus, and Ph. betisi were found in all of the areas of this study. Interestingly, we found a 1/220 (0.45%) co-infection sample of L. martiniquensis and Trypanosoma in Se. khawi from Songkhla Province. These data indicate that several species of sand flies might be potential vectors of Leishmania and Trypanosoma parasites in southern Thailand. However, more extensive study for potential vectors using a larger number of sand flies should be conducted to prove whether these sand flies can be natural vectors of leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis in both humans and animals. In addition, our study could be useful for the future study of infection prevention, including effective vector control for leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis in Thailand.

Abstract:

About 30 – 60% of patients complain on malfunctioning removable laminar dentures whatever the manufacturing method was chosen. An alternative method to correct complete anodontia is the construction of fixed implant-retained prostheses. Plan of prosthetic treatment for individuals with complete anodontia is elaborated based on a number of factors including initial examination, analysis of clinical and additional laboratory findings, and choosing the optimal and accessible option for a patient. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of the patient’s psychological type on selecting the treatment tactics to correct complete anodontia in the lower jaw and on the level of the patient’s motivation regarding the choice of the prosthetic restoration. Materials and methods. 45 patients with compete anodontia who required prosthodontic treatment were included into the study. The clinical examination was performed in 2 stages. The patient’s psychological type was determined according to the House classification (1950) during the primary clinical examination. The patients were distributed into the groups according to the data obtained. We evaluated the decisions on the proposed priority options of the treatment plan made by the patients of each groups. Results. Our study demonstrated 62.2% of the patients (28 people), who sought help at the prosthetic dentistry clinic, had clearly defined needs. An option of intraosseous dental implants placement and then fixed denture placement without extensive reconstructive interventions was chosen by 8 patients (66.7%) of the study group 1. The patients classified as exacting mind conduct themselves in conformity with the personality characteristics typical for this class in the process of elaborating the treatment plan. 88.9% of people classified as indifferent psychological type tended to choose the simplest and the least expensive treatment options. Conclusions: 1. A key character trait of the patients classified as philosophical minds is the credibility to dentists. Decision making on choosing the optimal option is only possible when patients are completely aware of possible risks and complications. 2. Adherence to a clear treatment plan according to the established requirements is a priority for the patients classified as exacting minds. 3. When making a decision on the treatment plan for the patients with an indifferent psychological type, it is necessary to ensure the patient’s ability to follow all recommendations and prescriptions. 4. When dealing with the patients with hysterical psychological type, the doctor-patient mutual understanding should be built up taking into account the emotional instability of the patients.

Abstract:

When gassed with a CO2-containing mixture, under short-circuit conditions, the isolated outer mantle epithelium (OME) of Anodonta cygnea generated a current which exhibited cyclic variations throughout the year. The intracellular potential, under short-circuit conditions, had an average value of −31±0.5mV (N = 65). The potential was sensitive to changes in concentration of potassium and chloride on the haemolymph side of the preparation, but not on the shell side, and was insensitive to changes in sodium concentration on either side. When the preparation was gassed with pure oxygen the current fell by 85±1% (N = 8). A similar fall in current (88±2%, N = 8) was observed when the solution bathing the apical side of the epithelium was prepared without bicarbonate and gassed with 95% O2 + 5% CO2. If this same bathing solution was gassed with 100% oxygen, the current fell by 67±2% (N = 8) at pH7.2 and by 92±4% (N = 8) at pH4.5. The short-circuit current was inhibited by DIDS (0.5 mmoll−1) and SITS (0.5 mmoll−1) when these drugs were applied on the haemolymph side. The current was also inhibited by DNP (1 mmoll−1), iodoacetamide (1 mmoll−1) and diamox (1 mmoll−1). Amiloride (1 mmoll−1) blocked the current but only when applied on the haemolymph side. Ouabain (0.1 mmoll−1) did not affect the current. The net fluxes of rubidium (used as a tracer for potassium), chloride and calcium, measured with 86Rb, 36Cl and 45Ca, respectively, were very small when compared with the short-circuit current. There was a small net flux of sodium (measured with 22Na) towards the haemolymph side. The net flux of bicarbonate (measured with [14C]bicarbonate) was equal to the short-circuit current and was inhibited by DIDS. The permeability of the preparation to calcium was an order of magnitude higher than the permeability to sodium, potassium or chloride. The intracellular concentrations of potassium and chloride measured with ion-sensitive microelectrodes were 26.5±1.1 (N = 16) and 7.9±0.3 (N = 30) mmoll−1, respectively. Abstract:

This study is devoted mainly to the distribution and its changes, inhabited and preferable habitats of bivalves from family Unionidae in the territory of the Czech Republic and the discussion of major threats and conservation measures. Altogether 6 autochthonous (Unio crassus, Unio pictorum, Unio tumidus, Anodonta anatina, Anodonta cygnea, Pseudanodonta complanata) and 1 allochthonous species (Sinanodonta woodiana) has been known in the Czech Republic. All these species occurred in all three river basins (Labe, Odra, Danube) and watersheds (North, Baltic and Black seas). A. anatina is the most widespread and common unionid while P. complanata is an autochthonous bivalve with the most restricted area of distribution. U. crassus has been a significantly disappearing species. As in most European countries, pollution and habitat loss including fragmentation and degradation, together with other factors such as water abstraction, invasive species and loss of fish hosts are the main threats affecting their populations.

Abstract:

Introduction. One of the most important social tasks is the protection and strengthening of people's health. In the modern world, there is a tendency towards an aging population that leads to an overall increase in disease and mortality. This situation is also directly associated with the deterioration of the oral health status of the population that leads to an increase in the number of patients with dentition defects. Especially marked morphological, functional and aesthetic changes in the maxillofacial region are due to anodontia. In dental practice, anodontia is usually corrected with complete removable dentures, and production of correct speech sounds is one of the main tasks when manufacturing and placing complete removable dentures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the peculiarities of the speech adaptation in patients wearing full removable dentures. Materials and methods. 2 groups of patients were created: the group A included patients having no dentition defects, and the group B, which involved patients with complete secondary adentia. The studies were carried out using the method of sound computer spectrography before prosthetic correction, immediately after the fixation of a complete removable denture, after in 3, 7, 30 days. Results and discussion. The method of sound computer spectrography enabled us to record the sound speech production in Ukrainian language by patients before prosthetic correction and during adaptation to the complete removable denture. The obtained graphs demonstrate qualitative differences between the sound production by the individuals having no dentition defects (control) and by the patients with complete secondary adentia. The graphs also demonstrate certain dynamic patterns of acoustic processes during the first 30 days of wearing the complete removable denture. Conclusion. Thus, the complete anodontia significantly reduces the force and clearness of most vowels. At the beginning of wearing the complete removable denture, usually in 3 days, the force of sounds [o], [u] and the sound frequency of [a], [o] are restored. Following the temporary deviation from the norm, the frequency and force of vowels are usually restored in 30 days.

Abstract:

The phases of embryonic development of Anodontites trapesialis lasidia are described for the first time. Adult specimens were obtained from two fish farms located in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The internal demibranchs of 120 individuals were studied using a routine histological technique; 70 of these carried eggs and/or larvae in the marsupium and were utilized for the description of the phases of embryonic development. The demibranchs of five specimens were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy to detail the morphology of the larvae. Five phases of development were established: phase I, corresponding to the initial stage of cleavage with the formation of apical cells; phase II, including the stages of the morula and blastula; phase III, where the gastrula forms; phase IV, where the larva formed is still inside the egg envelope; and phase V, where the lasidium can still be identified immediately after eclosion.
