Abstract:
Abstract Counterfactuals such as If the world did not exist, we would not notice it have been a challenge for philosophers and linguists since antiquity. There is no generally accepted semantic analysis. The prevalent view, developed in varying forms by Robert Stalnaker, David Lewis, and others, enriches the idea of strict implication by the idea of a “minimal revision” of the actual world. Objections mainly address problems of maximal similarity between worlds. In this paper, I will raise several problems of a different nature and draw attention to several phenomena that are relevant for counterfactuality but rarely discussed in that context. An alternative analysis that is very close to the linguistic facts is proposed. A core notion is the “situation talked about”: it makes little sense to discuss whether an assertion is true or false unless it is clear which situation is talked about. In counterfactuals, this situation is marked as not belonging to the actual world. Typically, this is done in the form of the finite verb in the main clause. The if-clause is optional and has only a supportive role: it provides information about the world to which the situation talked about belongs. Counterfactuals only speak about some nonactual world, of which we only know what results from the protasis. In order to judge them as true or false, an additional assumption is required: they are warranted according to the same criteria that warrant the corresponding indicative assertion. Overall similarity between worlds is irrelevant.

Abstract:
Network-based virtual worlds allow multiple virtual worlds connected on a network to share information with one another. The development effort required to produce a network-based virtual world is quite large. The BrickNet toolkit simplifies this development by providing the standard facilities required by a wide range of network-based virtual worlds. It provides support for graphical, behavioral and network modeling of virtual worlds in an object-oriented fashion. BrickNet enables graphic objects to be maintained, managed, and used efficiently, and permits objects to be shared by multiple virtual worlds. In this paper, the architecture and implementation of BrickNet are described.

Abstract:
The protagonist's passage from the world of Gormenghast in Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan and Gormenghast, the first two volumes of the story, to the futuristic world of the City in the third volume, Titus Alone, is often seen as a break between the two worlds. This unexpected passage from one world to another also brings an unexpected switch to science fiction. Both these changes, the passage to another, radically different world and a shift to science fiction, are not so abrupt or radical as they may seem on the surface. Placing the Gothic and science fiction features into the spotlight, while not denying the existence and importance of others, can show how the reality in the trilogy is shaped, how its two worlds are connected into a whole, and how they give one another shape in the overall picture of Gormenghast. Together, they can add to the illumination of the anomaly of Mervyn Peake's story of Gormenghast.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Contemporary urban communities are the likely scenarios where the constructions of personal identities are achieved within a bilingual or multilingual sociolinguistic environment. Tradition acts as a negotiator between the forces that chisel a modified shape to an individual that seeks to immerse the self into a new collectivity. Between the fear to lose the already acquired identity and the forging of a new identity, there are words and worlds that need to be expressed within a discussion on the use of self-translation as a linguistic bridge to reach the other. The decision to embrace bilingualism is based on the desire to explore beyond their “village” and engage in broader conversations. Independently of the reasons of the individual to decide to be immersed in another culture, the decision implies the acceptance of modifications of a somewhat monolithic vision of the “self” and “the other”. To get immersed in bilingualism is the first step to penetrate a biculturalism that is bound to leave marks on the chore of the self as another referent is taken alongside the self, even in a competing way or at least following a comparative approach. That cumulus of life transcends to others through words that reveal a personal mysterious world that is in constant formation and transformation. In this article, I explore the experience of the self and the stranger in relation to linguistic and artistic exile in literature. The multicultural and multilingual author, Nancy Huston, chose literature, the land of words, as a place to establish her inner personal worlds. Words and worlds create a fascinating synergy as they interact with the illusion of a certain identity. “Self” and “the other” engage in conversations that lead to reinventing the self through the use of languages. The situational “exile” of the author is then expressed at multiple levels as the concept of national and foreign, original and translation, individual and collective, fidelity and infidelity, identity and otherness, and mother tongue and foreign language all play interchangeable roles in the hope of constituting a “unique monolithic identity".

Abstract:
Abstract Recently, critics of world literature such as Alexander Beecroft, Eric Hayot, and Haun Saussy have argued that a multitude of possible literary worlds make up the world of world literature. Literary worlds theory provides a richer and more relativistic account of how literary production and analysis work than do similar models such as Franco Moretti’s and Pascale Casanova’s world literary systems. However, the theory runs into two difficulties: it downplays the socio-historical situation of the critic and the text; and it has difficulty accounting for the cross-world identity of characters and how logically inconsistent worlds access one another. To refine the theory, I modify G.E.R. Lloyd’s concept of the “multidimensionality” of reality and literature. Strengthening Lloyd’s concept through reference to recent work in comparative East-West philosophy, I contend that the addition of Lloyd’s theory resolves the problems presented above while still allowing for a relativistic critical approach to world literature.

Abstract We show that in infinite worlds the following three conditions are incompatible: (1) The spatiotemporal ordering of individuals is morally irrelevant. (2) All else being equal, the act of bringing about a good outcome with a high probability is better than the act of bringing about the same outcome with a low probability. (3) One act is better than another only if there is a nonzero probability that it brings about a better outcome. The impossibility of combining these conditions shows that it is more costly to endorse (1) than has been previously acknowledged.

This work explores the opportunities of working with multiplicity in fashion. This provides the freedom ofcombining inspiration from different times, places and cultures. At the same time, it is important that the viewerunderstands the fusion and that the work shows relevance to the current time in fashion. The selected parts inthis fusion are costumes from 19th century America and garments from the Russian designer GoshaRubchinskiy. The focus of this work is a fusion of these two worlds with the aim to find a new way of dressing.By finding methods that explore the complexity of Worldmaking, it led to a better understanding of theimportance of finding the balance between multiplicity and reduction. The materials from these two worlds arebased on items from websites relating to the origin worlds. These items are then developed with inspirationfrom both pleasure and insight. This collection started with two worlds that resulted in a lineup of seven looks. These looks have come torepresent another world, but still contain fragments that can be derived from its origins. This ”another world” isa young concept and eager to continue the creation of a new culture of fashion.

Abstract:
In view of the complexity characterizing the contemporary discipline of academic theology, there is a need for functional models. Against the background of significant developments in twentieth-century theology, this thesis attempts to develop an analytical model which can make sense of some of the complexity characterizing this field. More specifically, the aim is to produce a model which can be used to distinguish between and relate different theological positions to each other at a meta-level. This is achieved through the elaboration of a two-dimensional typology composed of four quadrants representing distinct theological orientations. The proposed model and its analytical categories form the basis for a discussion of some key figures and themes in modern theology, with a particular emphasis on eschatologically oriented theologies. Finally, on the basis of preceding discussions, a case is made for theology’s ability to fulfill a vital cultural-critical role in a secular context.

Abstract:
Utilising a critical theoretical perspective, this work examines contemporary corporatised tourism and capitalist globalisation. This analysis suggests that marketisation limits the understanding of the purposes of tourism to its commercial and “industrial” features, thereby marginalising wider understandings of the social importance of tourism. Sklair’s conceptualisation of capitalist globalisation and its dynamics, as expressed in his “sociology of the global system” (2002), is employed to understand the corporatised tourism phenomenon. This thesis explains how a corporatised tourism sector has been created by transnational tourism and travel corporations, professionals in the travel and tourism sector, transnational practices such as the liberalisation being imposed through the General Agreement on Trade in Services negotiations and the culture-ideology of consumerism that tourists have adopted. This thesis argues that this reaps profits for industry and exclusive holidays for privileged tourists, but generates social and ecological costs which inspire vigorous challenge and resistance. This challenge is most clearly evident in the alternative tourism movement which seeks to provide the equity and environmental sustainability undermined by the dynamics of corporatised tourism. Alternative tourism niches with a capacity to foster an “eco-humanism” are examined by focusing on ecotourism, sustainable tourism, pro-poor tourism, fair trade in tourism, community-based tourism, peace through tourism, volunteer tourism and justice tourism. While each of these demonstrates certain transformative capacities, some prove to be mild reformist efforts and others promise more significant transformative capacity. In particular, the niches of volunteer tourism and justice tourism demonstrate capacities to mount a vigorous challenge to both corporatised tourism and capitalist globalisation. Since the formation of the Global Tourism Interventions Forum (GTIF) at the World Social Forum gathering in Mumbai in 2004, justice tourism has an agenda focused on overturning corporatised tourism and capitalist globalisation, and inaugurating a new alternative globalisation which is both “pro-people” and sustainable. Following the development of these original, macro-level conceptualisations of tourism and globalisation, this thesis presents a micro-level case study of an Indigenous Australian tourism enterprise which illustrates some of these dynamics in a local context. Camp Coorong Race Relations and Cultural Education Centre established and run by the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal community of South Australia has utilised tourism to foster greater equity and sustainability by working towards reconciliation through tourism. The Ngarrindjeri have also experienced conflicts generated from the pressures of inappropriate tourism development which has necessitated an additional strategy of asserting their Indigenous rights in order to secure Ngarrindjeri lifeways. The case study analysis suggests that for alternative tourism to create the transformations that contemporary circumstances require, significant political change may be necessary. This includes fulfilment of economic, social and cultural rights to which a majority of nations have committed but have to date failed to implement. While this is a challenge for nation-states and is beyond the capacities of tourism alone, tourism nonetheless can be geared toward greater equity and sustainability if the perspective that corporatised tourism is the only option is resisted. This thesis demonstrates that another tourism is possible; one that is geared to public welfare, human fulfilment, solidarity and ecological living.

This work is intended to retrace the path of development of citizenship based on the strengthening of the values of liberty and equality in the context of western modernization. The gradual development of human rights as rights of citizenship, traveled several directions, according to political-valorative influences that led to its normalization at the regions of the planet who joined the individualistic revolution. Thus, the continuing difficulty of overcoming, at the same time, safeguarding the rights of liberty and equality has been shown to be the central divergence that prevents the achievement of citizenship in its entirety. It is clear, therefore, the floating condition that the concept of citizenship acquires, understood as a historical building while under the influence of competing forces to define the paths of social, cultural and economic development societies have chosen for themselves. The social movements as major actors of civil society organized for social change, in this sense, appear as the primary means of shaping social values and practices, whether in the sphere of life and in the institutional world, with the aim to increase citizenship globally. Their action, therefore, is the central object of this analysis. To accomplish this goal, will be realized a case study on the World Social Forum process during the eleven years of its existence with emphasis on the current state of civil society organization in the brazilian post democratic context, from the consequences of the phenomenon that the deepening of the hegemonic capitalist globalization has brought to this country and around the world.

Abstract:
Ukraine and russia – as states, as cultures, as peoples – for centuries have each built their own strategy for happiness. After all, everyone wants happiness, but everyone goes to him in their own way. And individual communities, individual lifeworlds produce a common vision of happiness, which is very stable, woven into the way of life of these communities – it's really their life-world, that is, their way to live in the world, their way to live their world different from others. In fact, separate life-worlds of happiness are formed. Most communities coexist peacefully, each building their own happiness, but there are situations when building their own happiness is possible only in the battle for it with another community. Russia as an empire cannot get its happiness without enslaving Ukraine. Ukraine, as an independent state, cannot achieve its happiness until this independence is recognized by russia as an empire. But this is impossible for russia. The desire to humiliate another and only in this way to establish their identity - this is the basis of happiness for supporters and representatives of the empire. It is clear that such assertion of the happiness by empires leaves very little place for achievement of happiness by supporters of independent Ukraine. One thing remains – Ukraine's battle with russia as an empire. Ukraine must fight russia as an empire until russia ceases to be one. Key words: happiness, battle for happiness, happiness of communities, happiness as a life-world, Ukraine, russia

Abstract:
In spring of 2020, when the first Covid-19 related restrictions were introduced, educators were forced to rapidly look for new solutions. Most of those involved moving classes online. However, although quality was a concern for all institutions, ensuring a balance between safety and quality of education presented an additional challenge to providers of non-formal adult education. Therefore, developing a course to accommodate the new and, probably, enduring reality as well as carefully monitoring its delivery was essential. Even though different modalities have been used in education for decades, only now have they become a part of the mainstream. Most educators were used to working in either traditional face-to-face or online mode, while some students could have used a combination of both as well as other web-based resources. Thus, shifting from one modality to another or mixing them in a course presented certain challenges for both educators and students. This paper describes a blended hybrid program of English as an Additional Language for adults developed at RTU Riga Business School English Language Center in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The program has the same basic content as previous face-to-face one but incorporates various carefully analyzed modalities. Specifically, it combines a face-to-face (F2F) and remote online synchronous learning, and adds asynchronous part to the course. It has been piloted in open public groups as well as corporate courses with student feedback analyzed vis-a-vis face-to-face courses. This paper analyzes the development of a program for open groups.

Abstract:
Among the representatives of Russian philosophy of the XIX–XX centuries, there were many who tried to identify the nature of the relationship in the process of cognition of the world of philosophy and mathematics. One of them was M.S. Aksenov, who created the metageometric concept of the space-time model of the universe, where he argued that the objects perceived by man as three-dimensional are four-dimensional and exist in four-dimensional space in absolute rest. The idea of the illusory nature of movement, change, and the development of the objective world was the foundation of M.S. Aksenov's reasoning. Man, in his understanding, lives in an unchanging Universe, being in continuous motion in time, perceived by him not as his own, but as changes occurring with it. A prominent representative of Russian mathematicians and philosophers was also a member of the "Moscow Philosophical and Mathematical School" N.V. Bugaev, who developed an original teaching – arrhythmology, which, together with mathematics, he considered a specific methodology that could help in finding answers to complex questions of scientific and philosophical understanding of the world. Another idea of N.V. Bugaev, where the connection between mathematics and philosophy was manifested, was the idea of the evolutionary development of the natural, social, and spiritual worlds, embodied by him in his monadology. The philosophical works of M. S. Aksenov and N. V. Bugaev, in which they used mathematical models to understand the world order, contributed to the development and awareness of the role of "philosophical and mathematical synthesis" as a method of cognition.

Yilmaz, Ihsan, and Nicholas Morieson. Civilizational Populism Around the World. European Center for Populism Studies (ECPS), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55271/pp0012.

Abstract:
This article addresses an issue of growing political importance: the global rise of civilizational populism. From Western Europe to India and Pakistan, and from Indonesia to the Americas, populists are increasingly linking national belonging with civilizational identity—and at times to the belief that the world is divided into religion-based civilizations, some of which are doomed to clash with one another. As part of this process, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity have all been commandeered by populist parties and movements, each adept at using the power of religion—in different ways and drawing on different aspects of religion—to define the boundary of concepts such as people, nation, and civilization.

Azevedo, Tasso, Sally Collins, Antonio Carlos Hummel, et al. 10 Years of Megaflorestais: A Public Forest Agency Leaders' Retrospective. Rights and Resources Initiative, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.53892/ciwc5229.

Full text
Abstract:
Just over a decade ago, several forest agency leaders from around the world met in Beijing, China at a conference convened by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), the State Forestry Administration (SFA) of China and the Chinese Center for Agriculture Policy (CCAP). As leaders—from Brazil, China, Mexico and the USA—we reflected on how few opportunities existed to learn from one another to discuss forest issues in an informal atmosphere outside of the protocol-laden, jurisdictionally-defined sessions we commonly attended. We wondered whether there was a better way—whether it was possible to have safe conversations where difficult issues, struggles and mistakes could be raised, acknowledged and learned from. From this first conversation, MegaFlorestais was created: a self-governing group of public forest agency leaders with RRI serving as the Secretariat and main funder. The period of 2005-2015 brought changes in forest governance, the status of forest ownership, the health of the world’s forests and the global context within which forestry decisions are made. But much has remained the same. Was MegaFlorestais a factor? What can be learned from reflecting on these changes in a decade?

Balda, Taras. ISSUES OF PACIFISM AND MILITARISM OF LIBERATION STRUGGLE IN UKRAINIAN DIASPORA PUBLICATIONS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11390.

Abstract:
Subject of the article’s study – journalism of Ukrainian diaspora publications on the topic of liberation struggle of Ukrainian nation. The author emphasizes on variations of such a struggle, in particular on traditions of militarism and pacifism. A lot of Ukrainians who lived outside of Ukraine, because of third wave of emigration, used to believe that the USA will start another world war, will deal with the USSR and in this way will help Ukraine become independent. Similar thoughts were fundamental thesis of so-called «liberation conception». Such theories and hopes were outlined in columns of such magazines as «Visti Combatanta», «Vyzvolnyi Shliakh». But another part of political emigrants, concentrated around OUN (w) and URDP, positions of which were represented in such publications as «Ukrainskyi samostiynyk» and «Nashi posytsii», problem of Ukrainian independence tried not to deceive to war between the USA and the USSR and considered nonviolent methods of government change. Similar thoughts had the authors of «Suchasnist» and «Lysty do Pryiateliv». Time and historical realities showed that were right those journalists who believed in evolutionary, not revolutionary, theory of state development. Ukraine was able to become independent peacefully after the USSR decay and creation of sovereign states. Among this, modern Ukrainian society still lacks respect to Ukrainian army, nurturing of traditions of military valor, honor and justice, to which even diaspora journalists paid attention in the previous century.

Abstract:
It is readily apparent to everyone that there are multiple and serious concerns that face Muslim societies today. Terrorism, civil strife, poverty, illiteracy, factionalism, gender injustices and poor healthcare are just a few of the challenges to governance across the Muslim world. These are core issues for governance and public administration in any form of government. However, before we can engage with good governance within the context of Islam, we need to be clear what mean by good governance itself. A simple definition of good governance is that of an institutionalised competency of administration and institution leading to efficient resource allocation and management[1]. Another way of looking at it is as a system which is defined by the existence of efficient and accountable institutions[2]. Civil society now tends to look at good governance by way of impact measurement and how a certain set of processes result in a set of measurable and desirable outcomes.

Abstract:
Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated. Knowing that the peer review process can introduce issues of bias, what then of other aspects of the publishing cycle? For example, what of the subvention funding provided by some institutions to support their faculty in pursuing dissemination of research in Open Access (OA) journals? This Open Educational Resource (OER) will present an overview of the OA landscape and provide learners with tools to develop their own inquiries into the inequities present within the OA publishing industry. All assignments include suggested grading rubrics and build upon one another in a cumulative manner.

Abstract:
Stories of HIV Activists during COVID-19 in the UK examines and interprets the experiences of HIV activists during the COVID-19 pandemic. It relies on qualitative data obtained through a UK-ICN BBSRC funded grant. We draw from these stories to start a conversation about how activism translates from one health crisis (HIV/AIDS) to another (COVID-19). These activist stories tell us about how activist individuals and organisations responded to COVID-19, but they also provide insight for future pandemic contexts. The UK and many other countries across the world face a variety of new pandemic threats, including monkeypox and Ebola, which demand new forms of health intervention and strategies to mobilise individuals and communities. We use these stories to illuminate the resilience of some activists in the face of crisis and to articulate ways in which health activism can be adapted and remobilised to respond to new health crises.

Kapelyushnyi, Anatolyi. TRANSFORMATION OF WORD-FORMS DURING THEIR SPONTANEOUS CREATION IN LIVE TELEVISION BROADCASTIN: ADJECTIVES ADVERBS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11409.

Abstract:
The article analyzes transformation of word-forms during spontaneous creation in live television broadcasting. Particular attention is paid to adjectives adverbs. The specific properties of adverbs makes it easier to trace general trends in their transformations, because adverbs are not burdened with many different forms and their variations, that occur in the process of word change of some other class of words at the same time adverbiatives allow to analyze in more detail the semantical and grammatical structure of speech. The main method we use is to observe the speech of live TV journalist, we used during the study methods of comparative analysis of comparison of theoretical positions from the work of individual linguists and journalists. Our objective is to trace these transformations and develop a certain attitude towards them in our researches of the language of the media and practicing journalists to support positive trends in the development of the broadcasting on TV and give recommendations for overcoming certain negative trends. All studies of the problems of transformation of grammatical forms in different ways relate to translation studies, mostly investigate the grammatical transformations, that the translator resorted to, when reproducing the original by means of another language. At first glance, it would be logical, if the live speech of television journalists was dominated by transformations? Associated with the translation from internal to foreign broadcasting in cases where natural for this TV journalists is Russian-speaking internal broadcasting and he reproducing the text from internal Russian-speaking. The transformation of grammatical forms however this cannot be seen in the live use of adverbiatives. An interesting trend can also be seen in the transformation of different types of grammatical forms. In particular, negative interference is mostly characteristic of the forms of corporate adverbs. Forms of the same word with the same grammatical meaning is such overlapping of two forms of the same grammatical meaning is practically impossible outside of adjectives adverbial and adjectives themselves. Only a small number of transformations are associated with the forms of superlatives.
