Abstract:
In 1940 the Museum of Modern Art, New York, (MoMA) became the first major American art museum to establish a curatorial department dedicated exclusively to photography. From the perspective of the photographers, curators, and critics who had sought institutional legitimacy for the medium, the founding of the Department of Photographs was a watershed event, marking the moment when photography finally came to be recognized as a museum subject equal to painting and sculpture. Although the department has since had a pervasive influence on the field and the history of photography, surprisingly litt

Throughout the 1950s and '60s Ansel Adams and Nancy Newhall collaborated on eight books devoted to photography. Two of these publications stand apart as books which were distinctly commercial in character. The Pageant of History in Northern California (1954), created for the American Trust Company of San Francisco, and Fiat Lux (1967), commissioned by the University of California, are linked by a number of interesting similarities. The ultimate function was identical--to create a work that would reflect the institution's commitment to the State of California. This essay will examine the charac

The first photograph of Trevor Paglen’s 2010 diptych, Artifacts, is familiar. Picturing ancient ruins nestled in the cliffs of Arizona’s Canyon de Chelly, it echoes a 1873 photograph by Timo-thy O’Sullivan and a 1941 photograph by Ansel Adams. Paglen’s photograph, like its anteced-ents, is rendered in sharp-focus, without color, dominated by dramatic, diagonal striations of the cliff face. It frames the archeological history of the ruin within the geological history of the canyon within the cultural history of photography.Canyon de Chelly is actually the intersection of several canyons, formed
