García-Zapatero, de Villegas Gianina. "Ansiedad debilitadora y rendimiento escolar."

Full textAbstract: This research aims to scientifically validate one of the existing alternative psychotherapeutic techniques in our country, the Transcendent Meditation - Xirione's Method. To this end, its effectiveness in reducing the level of state anxiety was proven in a group of patients diagnosed with mixed anxious - depressive disorder of a national hospital. An experimental design was used, with a control group, consisting of 20 patients each. The experimental group received a Xirione's Meditation Workshop in its therapeutic perspective, and control group continued with their usual medication for 4 weeks. Both groups solved the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and after the intervention. It was also applied a survey related to learning, use and satisfaction with the meditation technique in relation to the management of anxiety. The results revealed a significant improvement and a large effect size in patients receiving the workshop compare to patients receiving only drug treatment. In conclusion, the clinical effectiveness of meditation in reducing anxiety symptoms is confirmed, specifically Xirione's Method effectiveness in reducing state anxiety, contributing this way to the validation of alternative methods in the psychological field in pursuit of the articulation process of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine/Psychology to the national health system in Peru.

Full textThe aim of the present study is to analyze the correlation between state-trait anxiety and coping strategies among a group of music students. Furthermore, the differences between sex and migration will be explored. Data on anxiety and coping strategies will be collected using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory STAI (Spielberger, Gorsuch & Lushene, 1970) and the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced COPE (Carver, Scheier & Weintraub, 1989), in its COPE 60 version (Cassaretto & Chau, 2016). A total of 95 undergraduated students, aged 17-37 years old completed the study measures from a music conservatory in Lima. Results indicated focus on and venting of emotions was associated with higher levels of state and trait anxiety. Meanwhile, active coping and planning was associated with lower levels of state and trait anxiety. A gender difference in state anxiety was found. Females reported higher levels of state anxiety. Moreover, migrant students reported higher levels of state anxiety. In the other hand, differences in coping strategies was found. Males reported higher scores in suppression of competing activities and humor than females. As conclusions, results were similar to previous studies in college students.

Full textAnxiety is inherent in people and how an individualemotionally regulates oneself has important implications for his/her adaptation to its environment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between these two psychological variables in a group of psychotherapists in Lima, involved in the framing of the “acogida”.The sample consists of 25 “acogedores” between 22 and 63 years who were assessed using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire Peruvian version (ERQP) byGargurevich and Matos (2010).It turned out that there was no significant correlation between the types of anxiety, state and trait, and the forms of emotionalregulation, cognitive reappraisal and suppression. However, the possible explanations are analyzed, contributing knowledge about these “acogedores” and provide important data for organizations that provide this service to the community.

Full textIn the area of Traumatology, patients who suffer fractures and require surgical intervention may present manifestations such as anxiety, which could increase the perception of postoperative pain, and result in a longer and more difficult hospital stay and recovery. If patients use adaptive coping strategies during hospitalization and surgical intervention, anxiety levels may decrease. The objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between anxiety and coping in a group of 36 adolescents between 10 and 19 years hospitalized and outpatient consultation in the area of Traumatology of three Hospitals in Lima. The instruments administrated are the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for children (STAIC) in the Spanish version by Seisdedos (1989) and the Adolescents' Coping Scale (ACS) in the adapted version of Pereña and Seisdedos (1997). The results showed inverse and significant correlations between state anxiety and the reference to others style (r=-.331, p<0.01), and social action strategy (r=-.439, p<0.05), as well as state/trait anxiety and focus on the positive strategy (r=-3.49, p<0.01), (r=-.359, p<0.01) respectively. Finally, a direct and significant correlation between trait anxiety and non-productive coping style (r=.681, p<0.05), and keep to self-strategy (r=.391, p<0.01), and self-blame strategy (r=.557, p<0.05).

Full textYoung college students are a population exposed to high levels of stress and negative feelings due to the high academic demand of this period. The anxiety over food is a contemporary characteristic that usually rises during periods of high demands of stress, increasing the possibility of disorders in the eating behavior, diabetes, becoming overweight and obesity. For this reason, the present study focused on analyzing the relationship between anxiety for food and emotional regulation on one hand; and on the other, the relationship between anxiety for food and affectivity. For this purpose, a sample size of 432 students were evaluated through a series of instruments: FCQ-T (food craving), ERQ-P (Emotional Regulation) and I-Spanas-SF (affectivity).. An analysis of bivariate correlations was carried out using the Pearson’s r coefficient to determine the relationship between the different test points. It was found that under higher levels of negative affectivity there is a higher presence of food related anxiety. Likewise, it was found that under lower presence of positive affectivity there is a higher presence of uncontrolled behaviors towards food. With regards to the emotional regulation it was found that a higher use of the cognitive reassessment strategies is related to higher levels of hedonic nutrition. Lastly, it was found that the strategy of emotional suppression is related to anxious behaviors towards food. Moreover, it was found that women have a higher predisposition to anxious behaviors over food.

Full textThe purpose of this research is to describe the relationship between anxiety and coping, as well as to explore their possible differences according to sociodemographic variables obtained. The number of participants is 43 people with different levels of stuttering, between 18 and 34 years, belonging to a particular association of stuttering in Lima. The tests used were Anxiety Inventory: State - Trait (STAI) and the Multidimensional Inventory of Coping Estimation (COPE-60) in the adapted version of Cassaretto and Chau (2016). The results showed that the AR scale showed a direct relationship with the coping strategy, focus and release emotions, and an inverse relationship with the strategies, positive reinterpretation and growth, and acceptance; while, the AE scale was significantly related to the focus and release emotions strategy. Also, inverse correlations were found between the sociodemographic variable age and the AR scale, as well as with the coping strategy focusing and releasing emotions. On the other hand, significant differences were reported between the sociodemographic variable sex and the denial coping strategy, and the type of therapy variable and the religious coping strategy. From the study, it is concluded that anxiety is a factor underlying stuttering, as it implies negative emotions such as fear, embarrassment, frustration or anger, ultimately causing an anxiety disorder. In addition, it can lead to forms of non-adaptive coping that could affect personal growth. Finally, it is important to recognize the value of therapy directed by a stuttering psychologist and / or specialist in stuttering, since it can provide the patient with sufficient tools to deal with both stuttering, emotions and thoughts involved.

Full textIt has been demonstrated that trait anxiety and coping resources have significant repercussions in type II diabetes. The objective of this study is to become aware of the relation between both psychological variables in a group of patients with a type II diabetes diagnosis. The sample group is made up by 65 participants, between 40 and 80 years of age, from a hospital in Metropolitan Lima, and who took the Trait scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Coping Resources Inventory in adapted version of Valdez (1999). The results showed inverse and important correlations between the trait anxiety and the cognitive coping resources (r=0.33, p<.05), social coping resources (r=.30, p<.05) physical coping resources (r=.26, p<.05), and the global score of the coping resources (r=.29, p<.05). The results show an important relationship between both variables, which contributes to the knowledge on these patients function.

Full textThe research aimed to determine the relation between academic procrastination and test anxiety. The sample comprised 130 students of a private university in Lima, 68 students from the Program of Engineering and 62 from the Program of Communications. Measures used were the Procrastination Assessment Scale-Students (Solomon & Rothblum, 1984) and the Reaction to Tests Sarason, 1984), both translated for this study. Factor analyses of both scales were carry out three factors explained the reasons to procrastinate: Beliefs about lack of resources, Negative reaction to expectations or requirements of self or others, and Lack of energy to start the task; and three factors were found in the Reaction to Tests Scale: Negative thoughts before and during testing, Distractions and irrelevant thoughts, and Physiological symptoms of discomfort. Results showed a correlation between Reasons to Procrastinate and factors of Reaction to Test Scale, especially with Negative thoughts. Also gender differences were found, where women had higher scores in levels of Anxiety and Physical symptoms of distress in their Reactions to tests, and men obtained higher scores on the procrastination of certain academic activities. There were no significant differences between Career Programs in their Procrastination global score. Nevertheless, engineering students showed higher scores in the Degree in which the Postponed Task was perceived as a Problem and in Academic-Administrative tasks Procrastination.

Full textThis study aimed to describe the relationship between chronic procrastination and State-Trait Anxiety in a sample of 118 students (M = 22.37 years, SD = 1.5) from a private university in Lima. Secondarily, it sought to determine the relationship between each of these constructs and the condition of length of residence in Lima, sex and work, as well as the association among Procrastination and Anxiety with sociodemographic variables. Chronic procrastination was assessed with the Adult Inventory of Procrastination (McCown & Johnson, 1989), General Procrastination Scale (Lay, 1986) and the Decisional Procrastination Scale (Mann, 1982). The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (Spielberger, Gorsuch & Lushene, 1970) was used for anxiety. Results revealed strong and significant associations between State-Trait Anxiety and chronic procrastination. Differences were found in State and Trait Anxiety scales depending on sex and work, where women and those who do not work showed higher scores. Finally, a positive and significant association was found between Chronic Procrastination and State-Trait Anxiety in men as well as in those who work.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to determine the differences between the types of anxiety and the emotion regulation strategies in mental health nurses in two different units of a psychiatric hospital. Moreover, the study seeks to find the relationship between both constructs. The sample is made up of 12 nurses and 16 aids from an acute ward (Unit 1), and 6 nurses and 14 aids from a special care ward (Unit 2), who answered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire’s Peruvian version (ERQP) by Gargurevich and Matos (2010). The results show no differences between the units, and state-anxiety, trait-anxiety and suppression, but differences between cognitive reappraisal do exist. Similarly, no correlations were found between state-anxiety and emotion regulation strategies. Nonetheless, in Unit 1, a direct correlation between trait-anxiety and suppression was found, and in Unit 2, a direct correlation between trait-anxiety and cognitive reappraisal. Furthermore, the findings show that nursing aids have higher levels of both anxieties, and suppress their emotions more than nurses. As a result, this study found that the differences respond more to the profession than the unit of the nursing staff.

Full textAbstract: This research aims to measure the relationship between anxiety and emotion regulation, and how they influence motor performance in teenagers from a development soccer team, under time restriction and no time restriction. In addition, it intends to analyze the relationship between trait anxiety and state anxiety, the relationship between time restriction and anxiety (trait and state), and its effects on performance, and finally the relationship between emotion regulation and anxiety. The study had 65 male participants (M=14.88, DE=1.31) and used a quasi-experimental design with three dependent variables measured with the STAI (Spielberger, Gorsuch, & Lushene, Inventario de la ansiedad rasgo-estado (IDARE, versión en español del STAI [State Trait – Anxiety Inventary]), 1970), Emotion regulation Questionnaire in its Spanish version and the McDonald Soccer Wall Volley Test (1951). The results show a difference in the quality of performance rather than the quantity, with reappraisal regulation being the one that produced fewer errors in participants with lower trait anxiety. Additionally, the results showed a significant relationship between trait anxiety and state anxiety (r=.436, p=.00), and a direct relationship between state anxiety and number of errors. Also, they showed an inverse correlation (r= -.260, p=.037) between errors and emotional regulation, where a bigger score in reappraisal regulation meant less errors made by participants.

Full textThe aim of the present study was to analyze the possible relationship between depressive and anxiety symptomatology and emotional regulation in adults who exercise. With this purpose, this study was made up of 116 adults of both sexes who exercise, whose ages oscillated between 18-61 years of age (M = 33.03 years; DE = 11.40). The Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) was used in its Spanish version validated in Perú (Dominguez y Medrano, 2016), the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQP) adapted in Peru (Gargurevich y Matos, 2010), the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) in its Argentinian version (Brenlla y Rodríguez, 2006), and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) in its Spanish adaptation (Sanz, 2011). A direct relationship was found between the depressive and anxiety symptomatology and the emotional regulatory strategies other-blame, self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing and suppression, and between anxiety symptomatology and the acceptance strategy. In addition, it was found that depressive and anxiety symptomatology inversely correlated with the strategy positive refocusing, and that the cognitive reappraisal strategy inversely correlated with depressive symptomatology. Finally, differences were found according to certain sociodemographic variables and others related to physical exercise. The possible explanations of these findings are discussed, as well as the limitations of the study and the possible future lines to follow.

Full textAbstract. Anxiety and depression disorders are high prevalence in the European population. There is a high percentage of relapse and non-response to pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy treatments in both mental disorders. Given the low Emotional Intelligence (EI) of patients suffering from anxiety and depression, the present study aimed to investigate the effect on anxiety, depression, and emotional intelligence of Emotion Focused Therapy in patients with anxiety and depression. This empirical study utilized a sample of 90 patients who suffered from anxiety and depression in a treatment/control group research design. Pre and post measures were taken relating to EI, anxiety and depression. The treatment group received 20 sessions of Emotion Focused Therapy. The results showed that the treatment group increased EI, but not the control group. Depressive and anxious symptoms decreased significantly over time in the treatment group. The findings suggest that EFT could increase EI and improved depression and anxiety. The results hold implications for psychotherapists that seek to enhance the EI of patients and both anxiety and depression. This is the first study to investigate the impact of EFT on training EI.

Full textThis thesis includes two researches: I) assessment of separation anxiety in children, and II) school prevention of emotional difficulties. The objectives of the first research were to adapt and validate the versions for the child and parents of the Separation Anxiety Assessment Scale (SAAS; Eisen y Schaefer, 2005) for Spanish child population. It was first developed to specifically assess the frequency of clinical symptoms of separation anxiety in children. It includes the four symptom dimensions of separation anxiety: Fear of Being Alone (FBA), Fear of Abandonment (FAb), Fear of Physical Illness (FPI), and Worry about Calamitous Events (WCE), more two complementary subscales Safety Signals Index (SS) and Frequency of Calamitous Events (FCE). This research included two independent studies with individual samples of children from 8-11 years, of both genders in equal proportion. The first study involved 1,281 school children and 910 parents; exploratory factor analysis identified four suggested factors by the creators of the scale: FBA, FAb, FPI and WCE. The second study involved 4,628 school children and 4,127 parents. Factor analysis confirmed the four dimensional structure of separation anxiety, with a satisfactory percentage of variance explained. Internal consistency, temporal stability, convergent validity, discriminant validity, sensitivity and specificity of the four symptom dimensions were adequate. The psychometric properties of the complementary subscales were adequate with certain deficiencies; both subscales correctly classified a high percentage of cases with separation anxiety disorder, especially Safety Signals Index (SS). The child-parent agreement was poor. In conclusion, SAAS is a valid, reliable and clinically useful scale, which enables to obtain profiles of separation anxiety disorder that help scale psychological treatment plan. The objectives of the second study were to adapt and evaluate the program Fortius (Méndez, Llavona, Espada y Orgilés, 2013), for adolescent population. In this study 443 children of lower Compulsory Secondary Education participated, mean age 12.59 years, of both genders in the same proportion; 307 out of 443 received the program (experimental group) and 136 did not (control group). The Fortius program combines a clinical psychology approach aimed of solving emotional difficulties with positive psychology oriented to promote personal skills. Its main components are relaxation, breathing and visualization (emotional strength), pleasant activities and social skills (behavioral strength), cognitive restructuring, problem solving and self-instructions (cognitive strength). It was applied collectively in the classroom in twelve sessions, during 50-60 minutes, by psychologists with specific training in the program. After twelve months, the program reduced anxiety symptoms in younger adolescents, the number of cases with high anxiety symptoms (risk population), depressive symptoms and behavioral problems in girls; also improved perceived health. Teenagers within experimental group and group leaders made a positive assessment of the Fortius program; group leaders also considered the degree of difficulty to implement it is low.

Full textThe main objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between coping strategies and anxiety levels of a group of 22 mothers, between 26 and 51 years old (M = 35.9, SD = 7.18), whose children were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The participants had kids between 3 and 10 years old who attend a center specialized in child development placed in Lima Metropolitana. A group of 22 mothers of children without any developmental disorder also participated; the total sample consisted of 44 participants. We used the Multidimensional Coping Estimation Questionnaire COPE, adapted in Peru by Cassaretto and Chau (2016) and The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory by Spielberger and Díaz-Guerrero (1975). The strategies of active coping and support for instrumental help were the most used by mothers of children with ASD. The results indicated significant differences just in the strategies of behavioral disengagement between both groups. It also demonstrates that the group of mothers of children with ASD showed higher levels of Anxiety-state and lower levels of Anxiety-trait composed to mothers of children without any disorder. There were six significant correlations between some coping strategies and Anxiety-trait and three significant correlations with Anxiety-state. Finally, we found direct, strong and significant correlations between number of children and the strategies of planning (r=.70, p=<.001), suppression (r=.52, p=.01), with a high magnitude, and positive reinterpretation and growth (r=.39, p=.07).

Full textThis research evaluated the effect of an individualized intervention program to reduce stress, anxiety and depression of parents with their infant in the NICU. Eighty parents (40 in the control group and 40 in the experimental group) were followed in their levels of stress, anxiety and depression, at different times from the child's income until the moment of discharge, being assessed by using scales on Parental Stress, postpartum depression and anxiety. The control group received the standard intervention procedure, while the experimental group received an intervention program from the moment of the baby income in the NICU. The results showed that the program is effective, with a significant decrease in levels of stress, anxiety and depression in parents who received the program compared to parents who had not received such intervention.

Full textThe zero maze test is an animal model of anxiety based on the approach/avoidance paradigm. This model is part of the methodology used in behavioral toxicology. This thesis begins with a prototypical study in the field of behavioral toxicology and it tries to solve some methodological issues. The first study showed differences in anxiety and spatial memory due to deca-BDE intoxication, the most brominated congener of the polybrominated difenil ethers. The second study showed the capability of the handling and social isolation procedures to modify the anxiety baseline of the animals. Moreover, a new parameter to distinguish between anxiety or activity alterations was proposed. The third study discusses about the use of C57BL/6J strain of mice in anxiety studies due to the difficulty in the interpretation of results. Globally, the results obtained in these experiments showed some of the difficulties that imply the use of this animal model of anxiety.

Full textThe objective of this research was to carry out a bibliometric analysis of scientific articles related to anxiety in response to the state of emergency due to COVID-19. The Scielo database was used to establish relevant and updated information about the anxiety generated by the emergency situation caused by COVID-19. As a first step, a search was carried out for the variables COVID-19 and anxiety in the Scielo database, finding a total of 17 articles, of which 9 articles related to Psychology remained, this made up the study sample. Then, the pertinent data analysis of the information obtained was performed. As a result, it is evidenced that the studies on anxiety generated by the COVID-19 virus are mainly quantitative (67%), with the rest being mixed. In addition, articles with incomplete aspects could be evidenced due to their rapid publication in the context of the emergency. Finally, it is concluded that bibliometrics is a useful tool in the field of scientific research to understand the general tendencies of how certain variables are investigated.

Full textThe main objective of this research is to describe the relationship between the dimensions of the Personal Style of the Therapist and the State-Trait Anxiety in psychologists who work with oncological patients in Lima. As a specific objective, it was proposed to explore the differences of both study variables with the sociodemographic variables. The sample consisted of 32 psychologists working in the care of cancer patients, with a minimum of experience in the area of two years. For this purpose, the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory (IDARE, Spilberger, 1975) and the abbreviated version of the Personal Style Questionnaire of the Therapist (EPT-C, FernándezÁlvarez et al., 2008) were applied. The results show an indirect relationship between the attentional dimension and the state anxiety. Likewise, a negative association was obtained between the trait anxiety and the attentional dimension, and between the trait anxiety and the involvement dimension. With respect to sociodemographic variables, a direct relationship was found between the psychologist's age and the state of anxiety level; as well as differences in the expressive and implicative function with respect to the workplace. Regarding the type of intervention carried out by psychologists, the differences in the operational and participative function are sought. Finally, differences were found in the operative and expressive function according to the theoreticaltechnical orientation.

Full textMusic performance anxiety is a condition that affects instrumentalist musicians independently of gender, years of training, music style, etc.; and can deteriorate their professional development. Nevertheless, there are no specific tests for Peruvian music students. The aim of this research was to adapt and estimate the psychometric properties of the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI) on a sample of 455 professional music students from three professional music institutions. After back translating the test, the author of the English test recognized it as the official Spanish version. Appropriate validity evidence based on test content was estimated by eight subject matter experts. Validity evidence based on internal structure was estimated by a second-order exploratory factor analysis with the Schmid-Leiman solution which showed a unidimensional structure (ordinal a = .97, SEM = 4.87). Additionally, two first order factors: “music performance anxiety” (ordinal a = .93, SEM = 6.11) and “depressive components” (ordinal a = .92, SEM = 3.01) were identified. Based on the new structure, a Negative Affectivity Towards Music Performance Inventory (NAMPI) was proposed. Finally, with a p < .001, the K-MPAI presented high and significant correlational values with STAI and BAI and, thus, appropriate validity evidence based on the relation with other variables. Results showed that interpretations and decisions based on the scores obtained through the adaptation of the K-MPAI present validity and reliability evidence for professional music students of Metropolitan Lima.

Full textThere are unfavorable situations that an athlete will have to deal with and the way they face the problem can affect his performance as an athlete. Therefore, it is important that the athlete feels comfortable with the sports environment and feels motivated, in order to perform well. The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between basic psychological needs, motivational climate, motivation, athlete engagement and competitive anxiety. In this study, 202 collective sports athletes from Lima Metropolitana participated. It was found that the satisfaction of basic needs and autonomous motivation positively predict athlete engagement. Likewise, it was found that the frustration of basic psychological needs predicts competitive anxiety. In this way, an athlete who feels that he can intervene correctly and competently in his sport and have a good relationship with his teammates will have a greater commitment to his sport. Also, an athlete who does not have autonomy in his sport, does not feel competent and does not have a good relationship with his teammates will tend to have greater anxiety for a competition. The results are discussed around the bright side and the dark side of the motivation.
