Full textThe purpose of this study are to investigate what motives that are more represented, and what intensity and frequency gym exercisers have to exercise by Self-Determination Theory. This has been investigated by a self-questionnaire instrument, Goal Content for Exercise Questionnaire (GCEQ) and Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ). The respondents (n=164) were Men (n=82) and Women (n=82) in four age categories younger, adults, old adults, and seniors. The results shown that intrinsic goal orientations were stronger motives than extrinsic for increased exercise intensity and frequency. The results also shown that Men has a higher frequency than Women by strenuous exercise. The two younger age groups shown a higher frequency and exercise intensity than the two older ones. The conclusion shows that older individuals have an intrinsic motivation while the younger has both an intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to exercise participation. These assumptions are based on an individual being task- or ego oriented.

Full textAbstract Background: A lot of people exercise for the sake of health and wellbeing while others want to improve their physical performance. Improving their cardio fitness is an important part of that. Objective: The objective of this study is to examine differences in perceived exertion after having followed a high intensity programme (HIIT) in comparison with a group that followed a low intensity training programme. Design: Pilot study Methods & measures: The study was done with a quantitative approach where two groups of subjects, a total of 10 performed physical effort during four weeks. One group of 5 performed high intensity workouts and the other group of 5 low intensity workouts. Prior to performing the four week programme the subjects estimated their perceived exertion after a fitness test. The same test was then repeated after four weeks. Results: Two out of five subjects that followed the low intensity programme estimated lower on Borgs RPE scale after the four weeks. Out of those who followed the high intensity programme (HIIT), three out of five estimated lower. Conclusion: To be able to generalize the results from this study it needs to be performed on a larger population. The results of this pilot study due to the amount of participants are likely due to chance.

Full textABSTRACT Aim Currently, the carbohydrate-restricted diet is a very popular method to achieve weight loss. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a low carbohydrate diet on perceived exertion during exercise compared to a high carbohydrate diet. The questions were: Are the ratings of perceived exertion during exercise higher after practicing a low carbohydrate diet compared to a high carbohydrate diet? Can any differences be observed in perceived exertion on Borg’s RPE-scale and CR 100 scale? Can any differences be observed in heart rate, blood glucose and blood lactate? It was hypothesized that perceived exertion during exercise would be higher after practicing a low carbohydrate diet. Method Six subjects performed a 45-minute cycling exercise at 60-65 % of maximal heart rate after consuming a non-carbohydrate-restricted diet for four days. The cycling exercise was repeated after consuming a carbohydrate-restricted diet for the four nest days. During both tests perceived exertion and heart rate where registered. Blood glucose and blood lactate were measured in capillary blood samples. Results The participant’s intakes of carbohydrates were significant lower during the second phase of the study. Blood glucose was also significant lower during the second test. Ratings of perceived exertion were not significantly different between the two tests; neither were there any significant differences in heart rate or blood lactate. Conclusions A carbohydrate-restricted diet (87 grams of carbohydrates a day) has no significant effect on perceived exertion during a 45-min cycling exercise at 60-65 % of maximal heart rate. The findings cannot comment on the effects of eating fewer carbohydrates, for example 20-30 grams per day according to Atkin’s, or performing the cycling exercise at a higher intensity, on perceived exertion.

Full textValvular heart disease are one of the most common heart diseases and previous studies have shown that exercise is an important part of the clinical diagnostics, especially in asymphtomatic individuals. In some cases, exercise lead to typical symptoms of valvular heart disease and improved grading compared to rest. The aim of the present study was to analyze tricuspid valvular function in rest compared to exercise and examine whether or not tricuspid regurgitation and pressure gradient over the tricuspid valve will alter after exercise. Sixteen participants was included with anamnesis of dyspnea or cardiac symptoms related to exercise as well as findings of tricuspid regurgitation during the echocardio-graphic examination. Individuals with known tricuspid regurgitation were also included. After the transthoracic echocardiographic examination, included individuals performed a bicycle test for six minutes with light workload. Additional ultrasound images of the heart was collected immediately after finished bicycle test. Two variables, pressure gradient over the tricuspid valve before and after right exercise, were analyzed according to its difference and then the differences were analyzed relative to the zero hypothesis. Median values of the variables were compared in Wilcoxon's signed-rank test and Spearman's rank correlation analyzed the relationship between increasing heart rate and pressure gradient under the influence of exercise. This study has shown that the pressure gradient of the tricuspid regurgitation changes in the performance of light exercise in individuals with history of dyspnea or cardiac symptoms related to exercise. It also showed the value of an exercise test in adherence to the echocardiographic examination in this group of individuals.
