The relationship between Solenopsis invicta nest density and the number of fire ant workers in bait traps and percentages of traps capturing ants were investigated in the waste land of Wuchuan, Guangdong, South China. The results showed that fire ant nest density is positively correlated with the number of workers captured in traps, and could be described by N=60.53LnD +348.0D+421.1. The workers exceeded 200 and 300 in bait traps while the density of fire ant nests was over 0.023 and 0.084 ind./m2, respectively. Weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina and O. longinoda) are famous for their impressive nest constructions where they weave together living leaves on their host plants. Also, they are known to protect tropical tree crops against insect pests and are thus being utilized for biological control. To optimize their use, nest numbers have been used to track weaver ant abundances in plantation, assuming the number of nests reflects ant numbers. Abstract:
Abstract The corrosion of steel in concrete structures is a costly ongoing problem which can be mitigated with cathodic protection. A variety of cathodic protection materials are currently available, including a relatively new expanded titanium net with a mixed mental oxide coating, Laboratory and field test results on Anode Nets are presented and discussed, Due to the current flowing between anode and cathode, migration of chloride ions from the cathode to the anode occurs. In comparison to carbon based anode systems, the expanded anode net provides less alkalinity consumption, lower anodic p

Abstract:
A systematic approach was undertaken to increase strength, modulus, and toughness of low density polyethylene (LDPE) filaments through infusion of functionalized CNT and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). CNTs were functionalized with OH functional groups using chemical treatment. Functionalized CNTs and UHMWPE were first dry mixed with LDPE, and filaments were then drawn using a melt extrusion process. Loading of UHMWPE varied from 8–10 wt% while that of CNT was at 2–4 wt%. LDPE has been infused first with UHMWPE, and then with both UHMWPE and CNT, and filaments were extruded.

Abstract:
We look at the spatial angle of economic growth. Specifically, we assess whether areas where people live closer together experience faster growth. Traditional measures like population density or urbanization are not optimal, as they are affected by large uninhabited areas or capped, respectively. We thus introduce a new measure Spatial Population Concentration (SPC) that captures how many people live on average within a given radius of every person within a geographic area. This measure allows for a more accurate measurement of the population concentration than traditional measures, as it does

Fritsch, Nicholas. Tail Sensitivity of US Bank Net Interest Margins: A Bayesian Penalized Quantile Regression Approach. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, 2025. https://doi.org/10.26509/frbc-wp-202509.

Abstract:
Bank net interest margins (NIM) have been historically stable in the US on average, but this stability deteriorated in the post-2020 period, particularly in the tails of the distribution. Recent literature disagrees on the extent to which banks hedge interest rate risk, and past literature shows that credit risk and persistence are also important considerations for bank NIM. I use a novel approach to Bayesian dynamic panel quantile regression to document heterogeneity in US bank NIM estimated sensitivities to interest rates, credit risk, and own persistence. I find increased sensitivity to int

Abstract:
In village economies, small firm owners facing idiosyncratic shocks adjust production by cutting spending and reducing employment. Households with whom they trade inputs and labor scale back their own businesses and reduce consumption. As effects reverberate through local economies, the aggregate indirect adverse effects are larger than the direct effects. Propagation is more severe when transmitted through labor networks as opposed to material supply-chain networks, and goes beyond input-output/sectoral considerations as it varies with network position, closeness to a shocked household, and n

Abstract:
Transit signal priority (TSP) systems have become an integral part of regional intelligent transportation systems integration. They modify signal operations to facilitate faster transit through intersections, improve transit service reliability, reduce delays, and enhance overall transit operational efficiency. Agencies are planning and implementing next-generation TSP systems. However, multifaceted challenges complicate TSP implementation, particularly in urban regions with high traffic density and multiple stakeholders. Full text
Abstract:
Welding technologies are state of the art for joining polymer composites, with one of the two joining parts considered laser transmissive (LT) and the other laser absorptive (LA). Pigments are often added to LT to enhance the crystallinity of the polymer matrix. However, pigments lead to internal scattering of the laser beam and the rate of transmission or the laser energy density decreases. Depending upon the type and amount of pigments added in the formulation of LT, the percentage of the laser beam transmitted, absorbed, or scattered differs. Laser welding performance depends on the laser e
