Abstract:
This thesis sets out a series of new techniques to improve the thermal management of power electronics. The work is motivated by the increasing impetus to design smaller, more energy efficient electronic power systems for a range of applications, notably electric vehicles. Thermal management is an increasingly important tool which can facilitate improvements in power density through better monitoring and control of system temperatures. This thesis seeks to deliver improvements in implementing this strategy. A review of the state of the art in thermal management is reported, focussing on temper

<p> My research was focused on greater sage-grouse (<i> Centrocercus urophasianus</i>; hereafter "sage-grouse") nest-site selection, nest success, and hen survival in relation to avian predators. The trade-off between using habitat and avoiding predators is a common decision for prey species including sage-grouse. In Chapter 2, I compared avian predator densities at sage-grouse nest and brood locations to random locations. Sage-grouse were located where densities of small, medium, and large avian predators were 65-68% less than random locations. </p><p> The effects of anthropogenic and lan

Bank voles, grey-sided voles, and field voles had synchronous 3-4 year density cycles with variable amplitudes which averaged about 200-fold in each species. Cycles of vole predators (red fox and Tengmalm's owl), and their (foxes') alternative prey (mountain hare and forest grouse) lagged behind the vole cycles. The nomadic Tengmalm's owl responded with a very rapid and strong numerical increase to the initial cyclic summer increase of voles (the owl’s staple food). Owl breeding densities in the springs were highly correlated with vole supply in the previous autumns. This suggested that the nu

In this thesis are theoretically processed information about insulation systems while focus is on their structure, composition and principle of operation. Further, there is theoretically designed self-supporting insulating system which is practically built after theoretically composed testing for finding its basic properties. The most appropriate process of realization is formulated at the end after evaluation of the individual tests.

However, there is still an inadequate knowledge in the technique for measuring the membrane charge. In this study, the solution conductivity in the fine pore was measured and used to determine the zeta potential in membrane pore. Experiments of electroosmosis and streaming potential were implemented to determine the zeta potential of PC and PVDF membranes.

PhD, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand<br>Many studies have shown a negative effect of depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) hormonal contraception on bone mineral density (BMD) in women. There is limited information on the effect of norethisterone enanthate (NET-EN) on BMD and the effect of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) on BMD is inconclusive, however emerging evidence is showing that low-dose COCs maybe detrimental to BMD in young women. "Maximizing net income for pork producers by determining the interaction between dietary energy concentration and stocking density on finishing pig performance, welfare, and carcass composition." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2014-11-1846.

Marketplace volatility in the pork industry demands that producers re-evaluate production practices in order to remain profitable. Stocking density and dietary energy concentration independently affect performance and economic returns of growing finishing pigs. Graduation date: 2006<br>Habitat loss causes a reduction in available resources for wildlife, alters the configuration of remaining habitat, and may isolate wildlife populations. White-breasted nuthatches (Sitta carolinensis) are experiencing long-term population declines in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, where they are historically associated with oak woodlands. As secondary cavity-nesters, white-breasted nuthatches may be limited by the availability of existing cavities for nesting and roosting. This study demonstrates how the density of a neighbourhood affects its energy demand, metabolism (energy and material flows) and its ability to produce its own energy. Single-family detached houses and row townhouses were each modeled using passive solar housing guidelines with the DesignBuilder building energy simulation software. Energy demand is then modeled within neighbourhoods at two densities based on south facing windows fully un-shaded at 9:00 am, and 12:00 pm solar time on Dec. 21. The neighbourhood metabolisms were then calculated based on location and density. The potential energy

The introduction of high throughput sequencing (HTS) in 2005 caused a revolution in the field of ancient DNA (aDNA). Using the large sequencing capacity of HTS, researchers have overcome the abundant environmental contamination present in most aDNA extractions to reconstruct the genomes of long extinct organisms, such as an archaic horse that perished >500,000 years ago. The proliferation of genomes engendered by HTS has also led to the development of potential ancillary technologies for aDNA research such as genotyping microarrays. Junipers and pines exhibit contrasting patterns of growth decline and mortality with climate change-type warming and drought; yet, the underlying physiological mechanisms are not fully understood. To what extent do isohydric vs. anisohydric responses to water limitation in pines and junipers constrain net leaf CO2 exchange and plant growth response to drought and warming?
