Abstract:
This study aimed to find evidence regarding the use of personal pronouns in the discourses produced by males and females. Personal pronouns were chosen as the object of analysis, as several studies has suggested them as one of the features that may distinguish the gender of the authors. This study analysed publically available corpus, Rovereto Twitter N-Gram Corpus (RTC), utilized by Herdagdelen (2013). It is gender-of-the-author tagged, which makes the author’s gender analysis easier. The corpus was analysed using AntConc (Anthony, 2014). From AntConc’s concordance analysis, it was found that women utilised more personal pronouns, especially the ones that can create closer bond. On the other hand, men have greater tendency to distant themselves using generic pronouns than women. In conclusion, men and women in this study may use personal pronouns differently. Abstract:
This research explores how corpus-based analysis of the words indicates optimism and vitality in John Greene’s ‘The Fault in Our Stars’. For the required purpose, a corpus of Greene’s novel is selected which is analysed with the help of Antconc 3.5.8 software. The words selection has been done by feeding the text onto the Antconc software, and adopting the words with the highest frequencies in terms of clusters and n-grams. To accomplish the validity, collocations and colligation trends have also been analysed. The frequencies of words and their excessive use confirm positivity, optimism and vitality that are the distinguished characteristics of John Greene’s writing. The study also highlights the usages of words and their resultant effects in Greene’s writing style.

In this paper, we (a) explain how translators can benefit from creating their own glossaries; and (b) evaluate how easily a translation glossary can be created from Japanese source text using free software applications. As our study shows, a major hurdle arises from the fact that Japanese text does not include spaces; it must be segmented, i.e., broken into “usable chunks” (Fahey, 2016), before a concordancer (in our case, AntConc 3.2.4) can be used to analyze it for glossary creation. We segmented our Japanese text using an application (ChaSen 2.1) designed for this purpose. This application’s output was problematic, forcing us to devise workarounds that became labour-intensive and time-consuming. Our completed glossary (shown in Appendix 1) is fit for purpose, but the complications in the process of creating it call into question the feasibility of using free software to make translation glossaries from text written in Japanese.KEYWORDS: translation glossary creation; Japanese text; concordancers; text segmentation; AntConc 3.2.4; ChaSen 2.1.

Abstract:
English is considered to be difficult due its different natures with Bahasa Indonesia both in pronouncing and writing. However, English textbooks are widely used in many program studies including in radiology. Therefore, many students have difficulties in understanding and comprehending the books due to their limited English ability especially related to English vocabularies and grammatical. This study aimed to acknowledge lexically and syntactically the linguistics features used in the textbook of Radiographic Positioning and Related Anatomy, which is a must-read book used during the study in the study program of Radiology. The method applied in this Corpus Linguistic study was a combination of quantitative method by using a concordancer called AntConc to analyze the radiology book quntitatively to get the word frequency list, and qualitative method in analyzing the quantitative data to describe the language features used in the textbook. The results of the quantitative and qualitative analyses show the most common vocabularies, word classes, and sentence patterns used in the text book that will be used to compose a pocket dictionary, which will help the radiography students to understand the radiological terms and comprehend many radiological sources autonomously and easily. Furthermore, through the dictionary, the students will not only be able to understand and comprehend many radiological texts but they will also be able to write texts and even discuss radiological topics in English autonomously. Results of the study show that AntConc has benefited the researchers since it has been able to assist the researchers in providing needed lexical and syntactical information of the textbook.

Abstract:
Academic words include words that are not commonly encountered in formal circumstances and specific to particular fields of study. Undergraduate students of the English Department are required to acquire academic words in applied linguistics for academic reading and writing research articles. This paper reports on generating the academic word list for the students of the English Department by using AntConc, a concordance software application. In this study, corpus linguistic research was adopted, in particular the corpus-based analysis category. Data were gathered from approximately one thousand credible Applied Linguistics journal articles published from 2008 to 2021. AntConc software played a significant role in processing these data to get the intended corpus, which was then classified and categorized based on the frequency of occurrences. The results include an academic word list and its word family. These clusters of academic words are intended for undergraduate students of the English Department in the first up to fourth academic semesters to prepare them to participate in international academic discourse, such as writing and publishing research articles. This list can also be used as a basis for further research related to academic vocabulary. Abstract:
Several studies have shown that women tend to use more personal pronouns and therefore show more involvement with the reader. This paper examines the differences between male and female editors’ letters in magazines. The study applied the method of corpus linguistics in order to examine forty editor’s letters twenty from the male-targeted magazine Gentlemen’s Quarterly and twenty from the female-targeted magazine Harper’s Bazaar. First person singular and second person singular pronouns were examined to determine whether the female editor showed more involvement with the reader than the male editor. The result shows that the male editor from the Gentlemen’s Quarterly shows more involvement with the reader than the female editor from Harper’s Bazaar, which clashes the findings of previous studies.

This Master’s Thesis is devoted to the consideration of corpus linguistics capabilities, investigation of the main problems encountered by technical translators while translating engineering texts and provision of an alternative solution for them to eliminate translation weaknesses, improve quality, and optimize translation itself. The paper defines features of a good quality translation and its requirements. In addition, the ways to overcome various translation difficulties at syntactic, semantic and structural levels are given in the form of recommended translation techniques which are classified according to specified criteria. The given research paper also provides a practical example of technical translation, the analysis of which gives wide opportunities for studying a corpus as an alternative solution for improving the quality of the translation. The thesis presents types and criteria for a good corpus compilation. Practical usage of a corpus with examples is suggested to outline its main functions and opportunities which can assist any translator in achieving the closest equivalency and adequate translation. The following paper shares experience of developing the Nuclear Corpus and its successful implementation while using the most user-friendly corpus managers. The paper also demonstrates the advantages of corpus application during translation compared to other modern technologies used in the process of translation. This research encourages the idea of further corpus development for the specific translation needs in order to make target texts equivalent at the highest level and meet expectations of the addressees. At the same time, the Master’s Thesis makes it possible to study the issue of a corpus further with the purpose to identify new useful opportunities it can provide to facilitate the work of a translator.

In this dissertation, I carry out an analysis of Hillary Clinton's and Donald Trump's political discourse in the 2016 US presidential campaign, in order to identify non-obvious meanings and patterns in their distinctive use of language. This comparison is carried out using a corpus-assisted approach, taking advantage of tools developed within corpus linguistics, such as the corpus query tool 'AntConc'. Based on the comparison of lists of keywords for both corpora, the analysis highlights aspects of their political rhetoric that would not be noticeable by simply reading the transcripts.

Abstract:

More specifically, a corpus-based demonstration of the general style used in rock lyrics is formed in order to identify the genre-specific features. A corpus consisting of roughly 53 000 words was created for this research. The focus lies on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the vocabulary as well as of the stylistic markers. The aim of this essay is to investigate the language used in the lyrics of rock music lyrics and the results of the research illustrate in what ways rock lyrics are either more spoken-like or written-like; whether rock lyrics mirror the general word usage in society, and in what ways rock music is comparable to other genres. Using the rock lyrics corpus (ROLC), trends within rock lyrics were retraced diachronically. Results show that rock lyrics, to some extent, follow the general word usage. However, other results also contradict this. Further research in this area is therefore encouraged.  Findings show that rock music shares features with other genres, but also that that rock has some unique features.  Developments and stagnations were detected in regards to word usage. These features are examined in order to find an explanation.

Verb-Particle Constructions (VPCs) are verbal constructions typical of the English language formed by a verb and one or two particles. Such structures are syntactically and semantically complex due to the fact that they do not fit into logical and homogeneous rules. This research aims at examining the semantics of particles in VPCs within the framework of Cognitive Grammar and Cognitive Linguistics. The discussion of the semantic contribution of the particles away, out and ‘over’ is grounded in image schemas which allow establishing relations among the different meanings of particles found in the VPCs selected for the analysis. By using Corpus Linguistics tools, namely a concordancer called AntConc 3.2.1w, the five most frequent VPCs with each particle in the American National Corpus were selected for the analysis. The results showed that the particles contribute to the overall meaning of VPCs in different degrees, with more and less metaphorical senses

Abstract:
This chapter presents the linguistic analysis of science teachers' narratives regarding their worldviews in the digital age and their views of technology. The analysis was performed using Laurence Anthony's software AntConc, which is suitable for analyzing large data corpora. The language behavior of the following groups of teachers was analyzed by exploring three distinctive linguistic markers: personal pronouns to study participants' foci of attention; emotion words, to measure the extent of their emotional immersion in the discourse; and semantic fields of specific word collocations. The results, based on the variations in the language behavior, indicated differences between the three groups of teachers' worldviews. In addition, the examination of the degree of descriptive elaboration, expressed through the use of sense, motion, and exclusion words, revealed similar levels of truthfulness in all three groups. The linguistic analysis, enhanced by various computational linguistic technologies available through the AntConc software, made it possible to identify implicitly conveyed thoughts and feelings, thereby affording a better understanding of complex education-related processes and phenomena.

Abstract:
This essay co-authored by Robert Davis and his students in a theater class at New York University describes the interdependence of close and distant reading practices in their creation and analysis of a representative corpus of nineteenth-century drama. With irregular scholarly and theatrical attention given to nineteenth-century American theatre, the archive of plays and productions is frustratingly fragmented with few playbooks and only limited accounts of their staging. This chapter demonstrates how students used corpus linguistic and spatial analysis tools like Voyant, Antconc, and Tagxedo to recover a neglected century of American theater. Students found that the use of digital tools to perform text analysis, mapping, and network visualization sparked new scholarly ideas about nineteenth-century theatre.

Abstract:
British didactic novels of the turn of the 19th century have been defined as works of fiction where instruction in moral codes of behavior rather than imaginative elements is the primary focus (Havens 2017, p. 5). My research aims to investigate the generic specificities of such novels by working with the open-source software TXM and AntConc to compare two corpora of novels published between 1778 and 1814 in Britain. These corpora were created using reviews from the Monthly Review and the Critical Review. Contrary to my hypothesis, a lexical comparison of the two corpora shows that the novels they contain do not materially differ in their use of lexis related to instruction and morality. This leads me to reassess the basis for the early reception of didacticism in these novels. Fruitful new hypotheses are generated using both corpus stylistics and close reading.

Abstract:

A Prospective Comparison of Evidence Synthesis Search Strategies Developed With and Without Text-Mining Tools. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcmethodsprospectivecomparison.

Abstract:
Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence synthesis products in real world settings. Specific questions included: (1) Do TMTs decrease the time spent developing search strategies? (2) How do TMTs affect the sensitivity and yield of searches? (3) Do TMTs identify groups of records that can be safely excluded in the search evaluation step? (4) Does the complexity of a systematic review topic affect TMT performance? In addition to quantitative data, we collected librarians' comments on their experiences using TMTs to explore when and how these new tools may be useful in systematic review search¬¬ creation. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, we included seven SR projects, and classified them into simple or complex topics. The project librarian used conventional “usual practice” (UP) methods to create the MEDLINE search strategy, while a paired TMT librarian simultaneously and independently created a search strategy using a variety of TMTs. TMT librarians could choose one or more freely available TMTs per category from a pre-selected list in each of three categories: (1) keyword/phrase tools: AntConc, PubReMiner; (2) subject term tools: MeSH on Demand, PubReMiner, Yale MeSH Analyzer; and (3) strategy evaluation tools: Carrot2, VOSviewer. We collected results from both MEDLINE searches (with and without TMTs), coded every citation’s origin (UP or TMT respectively), deduplicated them, and then sent the citation library to the review team for screening. When the draft report was submitted, we used the final list of included citations to calculate the sensitivity, precision, and number-needed-to-read for each search (with and without TMTs). Separately, we tracked the time spent on various aspects of search creation by each librarian. Simple and complex topics were analyzed separately to provide insight into whether TMTs could be more useful for one type of topic or another. Results: Across all reviews, UP searches seemed to perform better than TMT, but because of the small sample size, none of these differences was statistically significant. UP searches were slightly more sensitive (92% [95% confidence intervals (CI) 85–99%]) than TMT searches (84.9% [95% CI 74.4–95.4%]). The mean number-needed-to-read was 83 (SD 34) for UP and 90 (SD 68) for TMT. Keyword and subject term development using TMTs generally took less time than those developed using UP alone. The average total time was 12 hours (SD 8) to create a complete search strategy by UP librarians, and 5 hours (SD 2) for the TMT librarians. TMTs neither affected search evaluation time nor improved identification of exclusion concepts (irrelevant records) that can be safely removed from the search set. Conclusion: Across all reviews but one, TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches. For simple SR topics (i.e., single indication–single drug), TMT searches were slightly less sensitive, but reduced time spent in search design. For complex SR topics (e.g., multicomponent interventions), TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches; nevertheless, in complex reviews, they identified unique eligible citations not found by the UP searches. TMT searches also reduced time spent in search strategy development. For all evidence synthesis types, TMT searches may be more efficient in reviews where comprehensiveness is not paramount, or as an adjunct to UP for evidence syntheses, because they can identify unique includable citations. If TMTs were easier to learn and use, their utility would be increased.
