Abstract:
This study aimed to find evidence regarding the use of personal pronouns in the discourses produced by males and females. Personal pronouns were chosen as the object of analysis, as several studies has suggested them as one of the features that may distinguish the gender of the authors. This study analysed publically available corpus, Rovereto Twitter N-Gram Corpus (RTC), utilized by Herdagdelen (2013). It is gender-of-the-author tagged, which makes the author’s gender analysis easier. The corpus was analysed using AntConc (Anthony, 2014). From AntConc’s concordance analysis, it was found that women utilised more personal pronouns, especially the ones that can create closer bond. On the other hand, men have greater tendency to distant themselves using generic pronouns than women. In conclusion, men and women in this study may use personal pronouns differently. Abstract:
This research explores how corpus-based analysis of the words indicates optimism and vitality in John Greene’s ‘The Fault in Our Stars’. For the required purpose, a corpus of Greene’s novel is selected which is analysed with the help of Antconc 3.5.8 software. The words selection has been done by feeding the text onto the Antconc software, and adopting the words with the highest frequencies in terms of clusters and n-grams. To accomplish the validity, collocations and colligation trends have also been analysed. The frequencies of words and their excessive use confirm positivity, optimism and vitality that are the distinguished characteristics of John Greene’s writing. The study also highlights the usages of words and their resultant effects in Greene’s writing style.

Abstract:
In this paper, we (a) explain how translators can benefit from creating their own glossaries; and (b) evaluate how easily a translation glossary can be created from Japanese source text using free software applications. As our study shows, a major hurdle arises from the fact that Japanese text does not include spaces; it must be segmented, i.e., broken into “usable chunks” (Fahey, 2016), before a concordancer (in our case, AntConc 3.2.4) can be used to analyze it for glossary creation. We segmented our Japanese text using an application (ChaSen 2.1) designed for this purpose. This application’s output was problematic, forcing us to devise workarounds that became labour-intensive and time-consuming. Our completed glossary (shown in Appendix 1) is fit for purpose, but the complications in the process of creating it call into question the feasibility of using free software to make translation glossaries from text written in Japanese.KEYWORDS: translation glossary creation; Japanese text; concordancers; text segmentation; AntConc 3.2.4; ChaSen 2.1.

Abstract:
English is considered to be difficult due its different natures with Bahasa Indonesia both in pronouncing and writing. However, English textbooks are widely used in many program studies including in radiology. Therefore, many students have difficulties in understanding and comprehending the books due to their limited English ability especially related to English vocabularies and grammatical. This study aimed to acknowledge lexically and syntactically the linguistics features used in the textbook of Radiographic Positioning and Related Anatomy, which is a must-read book used during the study in the study program of Radiology. The method applied in this Corpus Linguistic study was a combination of quantitative method by using a concordancer called AntConc to analyze the radiology book quntitatively to get the word frequency list, and qualitative method in analyzing the quantitative data to describe the language features used in the textbook. The results of the quantitative and qualitative analyses show the most common vocabularies, word classes, and sentence patterns used in the text book that will be used to compose a pocket dictionary, which will help the radiography students to understand the radiological terms and comprehend many radiological sources autonomously and easily. Furthermore, through the dictionary, the students will not only be able to understand and comprehend many radiological texts but they will also be able to write texts and even discuss radiological topics in English autonomously. Results of the study show that AntConc has benefited the researchers since it has been able to assist the researchers in providing needed lexical and syntactical information of the textbook.

Academic words include words that are not commonly encountered in formal circumstances and specific to particular fields of study. Undergraduate students of the English Department are required to acquire academic words in applied linguistics for academic reading and writing research articles. This paper reports on generating the academic word list for the students of the English Department by using AntConc, a concordance software application. In this study, corpus linguistic research was adopted, in particular the corpus-based analysis category. Data were gathered from approximately one thousand credible Applied Linguistics journal articles published from 2008 to 2021. AntConc software played a significant role in processing these data to get the intended corpus, which was then classified and categorized based on the frequency of occurrences. The results include an academic word list and its word family. These clusters of academic words are intended for undergraduate students of the English Department in the first up to fourth academic semesters to prepare them to participate in international academic discourse, such as writing and publishing research articles. This list can also be used as a basis for further research related to academic vocabulary. Abstract:
This study aimed to know which types of transition markers (i.e., and, since, hence, in addition and then) were more frequently used in English M.A theses. To do this study, the researcher collected 30 English M.A theses which were written by Iranian students from Azad University of Kermanshah. Hyland’s (2005) interpersonal model of metadiscourse was used in this study. Identifying each type of transition markers was used more, the teacher analysed the so-called texts by utilising one of the Cutting-Edge softwares. Next, the frequency of transition markers was calculated by AntConc, one of the simplest and easiest corpus analysis toolkits. The outcome of the study was revealed that 6924 transition markers were found. The transition marker of ‘and’ was the most frequent and the transition marker of ‘hence’ was the least frequent. Furthermore, the results of Chi-square test indicated that transition markers were not equally used in English M.A theses. The implication of the study suggests that using concordance software can make English teachers aware of high-frequency and low-frequency vocabularies. Abstract:
This study was a corpus-based analysis of William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. A corpus based on the original text of the play was built for analysis. Then, a program called AntConc was used to acquire the top 200 frequency words from the corpus. Finally, five of the most frequently occurring content words were manually selected to analyze their relationship with the main characters or the content/implications of the play. The results obtained via the AntConc program showed that (1) lord appeared 89 times in the corpus and ranked 50th among the top 200 frequency words. It has the power and implication of making people forget their original intention and self, deceiving people, and causing people to forget how to cherish the people around them. (2) Shepherd occurred 65 times and ranked 68th. It symbolizes the idea of hope. (3) Daughter appeared 34 times and 125th. It assumes a crucial role throughout the whole play and makes the story go smoothly. (4) Honour occurred 34 times and ranked 126th. It represents the transformation of danger into safety. (5) Beseech appeared 18 times and ranked 198th. It can be understood as turning bad results into good results.

Abstract:
Machine translation has the potential to make huge contributions to translation industries, but it seems, for now, that machine translation equivalence has led to a crucial point for literary translation by using machine translation because of the problem of the equivalence itself. This paper, therefore, aimed to see the equivalence degree of literary translation resulted by machine translation, i.e., freeware toolkit AntConc 3.5.0 software 2019. The data were collected from English-Indonesian J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix novel by using the software to find the equivalent translation. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively based on the strategy of translation equivalent level proposed by Mona Baker (1992). The analyzed data revealed that the equivalent level of the software mostly occurred in a word level, above word level, and grammatical level. The software was likely difficult to find a textual level and a pragmatic level of translation equivalence because they required a context and still needed human involvement as part of a greater creative project of translation which were not done by the machine translation. After all, Antconc 3.5.0 as Computer Assisted Tool (CAT) brought a huge contribution to translation industry, helped to analyze large corpora particularly to find the degree of translation equivalence in word and above word level.

Abstract:
Antcins are newly identified steroid-like compounds from Taiwan’s endemic medicinal mushrooms Antrodia cinnamomea and Antrodia salmonea. Scientific studies of the past two decades confirmed that antcins have various pharmacological activities, including potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and is characterized as a significant threat to global public health. It was recently identified that SARS-CoV-2 required angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a receptor which supports host cell entry and disease onset. Here, we report a novel function of antcins, in which antcins exhibit inhibitory effects on ACE2. Compared to the untreated control group, treatment with various antcins (antcin-A, antcin-B, antcin-C, antcin-H, antcin-I, and antcin-M) significantly inhibited ACE2 activity in cultured human epithelial cells. Indeed, among the investigated antcins, antcin-A, antcin-B, antcin-C, and antcin-I showed a pronounceable inhibition against ACE2. These findings suggest that antcins could be novel anti-ACE2 agents to prevent SARS-CoV-2 host cell entry and the following disease onset.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore potential reasons why the use of the tools and methods of corpus linguistics are not prevalent in English teaching in Norway, using the research question What do in-service English teachers in Norway find useful about corpora and what do they find challenging? The study provides interview data from in-service teachers, contributing to our understanding of the in-service perspective on corpora. The research design consists of teaching corpus use in seminars for in-service English teachers (featuring LancsLex, the concordancer AntConc and the OANC), integrated into a language course that is part of a further education programme, and semi-structured interviews with four of the students who took the course, during which they also interacted with Netspeak, SKELL and COCA. As with previous research, the in-service teachers found corpora particularly useful for teaching and learning vocabulary, and found challenges to use which are categorized here as usability (criticism of AntConc), IT challenges (a lack of IT skills among teachers), learner-corpus interaction challenges (the complexity of software and concordance lines for pupils; pupil uninterest in language), and lack of teacher need (mistakes being “obvious” to teachers in the lower years). The article discusses some implications of these findings. Keywords: English language teaching, pedagogical corpus application, corpora

Abstract:

Deixis are the linguistic expressions which are used for the reference within the context and out of the context to share knowledge. These are functional keys for contextual coherence and for strong involvement of interlocutors. In this dissertation, role of deixis are interpreted with reference of three different categories of novels; Pakistani novels, other translated, and self-translated novels. The aim of this research is to extract the style difference due to the use of deixis as a style indicator in other and self-translated novels in comparison with non-translated novels. Further, we will try to find out how the use of different types of deixis effects on the context of the text. Generally it has witnessed that the other and self-translators are different in their styles. The reason behind such difference is that the self-translator has more freedom while translating their own novels for other audience. For analysis, in total nine novels are selected, three novels of one category and in total three categories are involved. This research adopted the quantitative approach and for analysis corpus software tool, AntConc is used. Whole data is tagged by POS tagger and manually as well, than interpreted through AntConc. The results of this research indicate that the Self translated novels used more deixis and have more simple and direct language then the others translated categories. In these novels the first person and second person communication is more oriented. Similarly other deixis expressions as time, past tense and special deixis are more referred which make language explicit.

Abstract:
Some media frames might be likely to seek to evoke a certain sentiment, and that natural disaster coverage by the media focuses on the current impact of disasters. In their coverage, American news media use polar sentiment words to create bleeding images of natural disasters, potentially counter-productive to the wisdom of dealing with the natural disaster. Identifying the sentiment words that lead to a misperception of natural disasters can help journalists adopt the wisdom that natural disasters are not a human enemy. The corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) reported in this article investigates the American media's issues for dramatic reporting and the polar sentiment words utilized in the framing. The corpus is built from 100 news articles reporting wildfires and storms by ten major online American news media published from January 1, 2018, through December 31, 2020. It uses AntConc to generate word-list and word-link from which it identifies the dominant issues. Subsequently, it compares the AntConc word-list with A List of Sentiment Words to reveal the tones and dramatic imaging. The findings show that the dominant issues in storm reporting are description, impact, and prediction, while wildfire reporting are cause, impact, action, and prediction. The negative polar words produce dramatic images of storm as a violent beast and wildfire as a vengeful invader. Such description is provocative to blaming natural disasters as a cause of human suffering rather than improving our behaviors to reduce the suffering. Thus, it is counter-productive to acquiring wisdom for dealing with natural disasters.

Abstract:
Corpus stylistics is the study of style by applying linguistic theory and the corpus-based approach. Therefore it combines qualitative and quantitative study. This study adopts the stylistic theory of Leech and Short (2007) and the corpus-based approach to analyze the science fiction The Time Machine. By using the corpus tools WordSmith 7.0 and AntConc, the lexical features and rhetorical features are extracted. Then the writing style and the theme are discussed. Therefore, the research enriches the empirical study of corpus-based fiction stylistics and encourages the appreciation of science fiction in the early times.

Abstract:
Analisis penggunaan sapaan kita dan kami menggunakan pendekatan semantik kognitif yang menghasilkan skema citra pemaksaan (attraction schemas compulsion): skema citra perpindahan (locomotion—momentum, source-path-goal), dan skema citra pemaksaan (enablement dan removal of restraint).AbstractThis article discusses the conceptual meaning of pronoun kita and kami which were frequently used by both of president and vice president candidates (01 and 02). In Indonesian language, the pronoun kita has the inclusive meaning, i.e. both speaker and hearer are included in the conversation, while kami has the exclusive meaning, i.e. only speaker is included in the conversation and the hearer is excluded. In this presidential debate, the usage of kita and kami does not always refer to the meaningmentioned before. This research aims to identify the conceptual meaning of kita and kami used by both of president and vice president candidates by using semantic cognitive study. The data are collected and analyzed using Antconc software as corpus method. It is concluded that there were compulsion schemas appeared into the data such as attraction schemas, compulsion; locomotion: momentum—source—path-- goal; enablement and removal of restraint.

Based on 90 argumentative texts from the corpora of LOCNESS and WECCL, the paper attempts to make a study of the syntactic complexity of those texts. All the data are processed online by the Web-based L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyser, and then processed with the corpus tool AntConc and IBM SPSS Statistics 20. The findings include: for one thing, L1 learners use more complex sentences with more verb phrases, and more embedded clauses, in their writings, compared with L2 learners. For another, in writing L2 learners may use dependent clauses with longer size than those by L1 learners despite the L1 learners tend to use sentences embedded with dependent clauses more often. Finally, some pedagogical suggestions are made on how to improve L2 writing course teaching.

Abstract:
A broad scope of application of corpus technologies indicates their importance in applied linguistics. Employing the comparative-contrastive method and the method of computer analysis, the author seeks to compare and contrast the main corpus tools of the programs Sketch Engine, AntConc, and WordSmith Tools, focusing on texts from specialized periodicals about cinematography ‘Total Film’ and ‘American Cinematographer’ for 2019–2020. The primary goal of this comparison is to provide recommendations for optimal choice of tools and programs for obtaining certain types of information. The author processed the total volume of texts that contained over 900,000 words, using the functions “concordance”, “word list”, “collocations” + “word s etch”, “N-grams”, “keywords” in Sketch Engine and AntConc (Word-Smith Tools has only “concordance”, “wordlist,” and “keywords”). Information about specific tools available in various corpora is collected and presented in a specially developed table. Different software programs described in the article have functions that perform the same tasks, but there are some differences in how data is presented. Among the software programs featured in this case study, the Sketch Engine platform gives the most options for choosing personal settings. The “concordance” function shows the word in context, “Wordlist” shows all the words on a given list with a record of their frequency in the corpus. The “collocation” function (or “word s etch”) recognizes fixed expressions, “N-grams” finds phrases that comprise a certain number of elements, while the “ eywords” function allows users to identify words that are specific to a particular subject area. Information thus obtained from the corpora may be helpful in updating English LSP dictionaries and glossaries of cinematography. The theoretical significance of the present study lies in systematizing the material about existing corpus tools, while its practical value is in using the tools of three corpus programs for the study of cinematic discourse, understood here as language used by the community of movie goers and filmmakers in their discussions of cinematography in specialized periodicals ‘Total Film’ and ‘American Cinematographer’.

Abstract:
Studying language through naturally-occurring data is easily feasible nowadays thanks to the use of concordancers. Using the software package AntConc by Laurence Anthony, the author approaches the linguistic style of Pope Francis in four of his apostolic exhortations. His lexical frequencies are compared to those of Venerable Fr. Tomás Morales, a Spanish Jesuit (1908–1994) who is considered a prophet of our time for anticipating the teachings of the Second Vatican Council twenty years beforehand. The two have several aspects in common, mainly in making laypeople aware of the universal call to sanctity and the missionary responsibility acquired in baptism. The results of the comparison show a similarity in the lexical choices. The article’s conclusions and implications are considered in relation to the word in education and in evangelization.

Abstract:

Chen, Jie, and Yi Zhang. "A Study on the Interpersonal Functions of Hedges in Academic Discourses." International Journal of Languages, Literature and Linguistics 7, no. 1 (March 2021): 33–37. http://dx.doi.org/10.18178/ijlll.2021.7.1.283.

Abstract:
Based on Hyland’s classification of hedges and Halliday’s theory of interpersonal functions, this study selected 30 research articles (RA) from Language Learning and English for Specific Purposes. This study employed software Antconc and manual checking to identify and tag hedges, investigating the distribution and interpersonal functions of hedges in the RAs. The main findings are: (1) Regarding the overall distribution, modal verbs are used most frequently, followed by epistemic adverbs, epistemic adjectives and epistemic verbs, and epistemic nouns are the least frequently used; (2) Hedges are most frequently used in the section of results and discussion. It is also found that hedges have the interpersonal functions of involving readers, coordinating the relationship between the author and the reader, highlighting the author’s stance and constructing the academic discourse groups.
