Abstract:
The thesis investigates methods of examining corneal biomechanics using non-contact tonometry and introduces novel techniques to investigate corneal material properties in vivo. A comprehensive systems analysis of the CorvisST (CST) and Ocular Response Analyser (ORA) was performed. Pressure sensors were used to characterisation the airflow produced by the CST and the ORA. Distinct differences were observed between the central airflow pressures between the two devices: the CST pressure was higher and of shorter duration. Scheimpflug high-speed imaging via the CST allowed components of the corne

Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma (PACG) is a worldwide leading cause of irreversible blindness much more prevalent in Asia than in European-derived populations. Patterns of ethnic differences may account for prevalence variation of the disease. Recent papers have reported a predicted rise in European-derived populations. Ocular risks associated with PAC(G) include an axially small, hypermetropic eye with a large lens. Potentially, there are patients in the UK with 'at risk' ocular biometrics predisposing them to PAC(G). Biometric disparities between ethnicities infer morphological variation of P

The tear film, cornea and lens dictate the refractive power of the eye and the retinal image quality is principally defined by diffraction, whole eye wavefront error, scatter, and chromatic aberration. Diffraction and wave aberration are fundamentally pupil diameter dependent; however scatter can be induced by refractive surgery and in the normal ageing eye becomes an increasingly important factor defining retinal image quality. The component of visual quality most affected by the tear film, refractive surgery and multifocal contact and intraocular lenses is the wave aberration of the eye. Thi

Abstract:
Automatic segmentation of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS OCT) images provides an important tool to aid management of ocular diseases. Having precise details about the topography and thickness of an individual eye enables treatments to be tailored to a specific problem. OCT is an imaging technique that can be used to acquire volumetric data of the anterior segment of the human eye. Fast automatic segmentation of this data, which is not available, means clinically useful information can be obtained without the need for time consuming error-prone manual analysis of the images.

INTER-SEGMENT COORDINATION VARIABILITY POST ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION SEPTEMBER 2015 DEVIN K. KELLY, B.S., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST M.S., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Dr. Joseph Hamill There is an increased risk for ipsilateral graft rupture and contralateral ACL rupture following ACL reconstruction surgery (ACLR) despite return to sport clearance. The reason for this increased risk is not well understood. Previous literature has shown that decreased coordination variability is indicative of an injured system regardless of the absence of pain.
Clinical imaging within ophthalmology has had transformative effects on ocular health over the last century. Imaging has guided clinicians in their pharmaceutical and surgical treatments of macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and numerous other pathologies. Many of the imaging techniques currently used are photography based and are limited to imaging the surface of ocular structures. This limitation forces clinicians to make assumptions about the underlying tissue which may reduce the efficacy of their diagnoses.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, non-ionizin

Silla, Zenzele. "The role of lens-derived signals in the development of the corneal endothelium." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/9847.

Abstract:
Corneal endothelial development is an intricate process driven by finely tuned gene expression. Its formation is necessary for the continued normal development of the anterior segment of the eye. The presence of an inductive lens able to secrete factors such as TGFβ2 as well as the expression of Foxc1 and Pitx2 is essential to corneal endothelial development, as in the absence of any of these; the corneal endothelium fails to form. Corneal endothelial development begins as peri-ocular mesenchyme (POM) cells migrate into the space between the lens and surface ectoderm at E11.5. From E12.5, the

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylosis, a degenerative disease of the spine, is a common medical condition that results in significant morbidity, loss of function, and financial burden on the healthcare system in the United States. The disease ranges in severity from axial pain, which is among the most common medical complaints encountered in healthcare, to severe neurological symptoms such a myelopathy and radiculopathy, which may require surgical intervention. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been established as a gold standard for safe and effective surgical treatment of cervica

Dissertação de mestrado em Optometria Avançada
Corneal biomechanics is defined as the study of the balance and the deformation of the corneal tissue under any force or pressure. Nowadays, it is receiving special attention in the ophthalmology field because detailed knowledge of corneal behavior can help to improve clinical applications as tonometry, contact lens wear and refractive surgery. The human cornea, as most biological tissues, shows a non-linear, inelastic, heterogeneous and anisotropic character that varies from point to point, from time to time and from subject to subject. Abstract:
The proper organization and differentiation of the anterior segment is pivotal for normal eye development. Neural crest-derived POM cells are key contributors to correct anterior segment formation, differentiating to form the monolayered corneal endothelium. Mice with homozygous null mutations in the forkhead transcription factor gene, Foxc1, fail to develop a proper corneal endothelium stabilized by adherens junctions, with the endothelium adhering to the lens, preventing anterior chamber separation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the interaction between Foxc1 and the adherens junction
