Anthelmintic resistance is a major problem in livestock, and while it has been slower to emerge in cattle, there are reports of its occurrence. Three broad-spectrum anthelmintics are available for use, and one mechanism of resistance that is common to all is target site alteration. Glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCls) are an important target for macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics (MLs), while beta-tubulin represents the benzimidazole (BZ) target. A study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of three anthelmintics, ivermectin, fenbendazole, and a combination of ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate, on fecal egg count reductions of cyathostomes and Parascaris equorum in 30 foals at the Texas A&M Horse Center. The foals were reared under standard horse center practices and were naturally infected with both cyathostomes and Parascaris. The foals were randomized into three treatment groups with individuals being rerandomized after each eight week observation period. The treatments of ivermectin and fenbendazole were given at

Abstract:
Japanese yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata has been commercially farmed in Japan since the 1940s. In comparison, sea-cage farming of yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi in Australia is still developing, with commercial production commencing in 1998. In Australia, S. lalandi is parasitised by Zeuxapta seriolae and Benedenia seriolae. In Japan, S. quinqueradiata is parasitised by Heteraxine heterocerca and B. seriolae. These monogeneans affect industries in both countries and management of these parasites is required to prevent impacts on fish health and commercial losses. I investigated efficac

Abstract:
Infection of small ruminants by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is a major health concern because they cause substantial economic losses, especially in the tropics and sub-tropics. For many years, control of GIN has been based upon use of anthelmintics. However, there is now a global challange because mutant GIN individuals can tolerate most of the widely used anthelmintics. Therefore, alternative control measures are needed. The objective of the study was to screen a number of plant species for their anthelmintic effects, and to evaluate selected strains of Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner)

A total of 587 faecal samples were collected from 98 horses of different age from three farms with various breeding system (pasture, stable and combination) in the South Bohemia, Czech Republic during three consecutive years (from 2009 to 2011), and screened for the presence of endoparasites, especially these inhabiting gastrointestinal tract and lung, using standard parasitological methods including flotation, sedimentation and staining methods. Moreover presence of Encephalitozoon spp. was detected using genus specific nested PCR. Small strongyles were the most common nematodes among studied

Abstract:
Compared to mammals, nematodes appear to exhibit a unique GABAergic nervous system. Haemonchus controtus is a parasitic nematode that infects ruminants worldwide. Hco-UNC-49 is a H. contortus GABA-gated chloride channel and is an orthologue to the UNC-49 channel from the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Previous research by our group has shown that while the UNC-49 channels from the two nematodes share similar sequence homology they do not share identical sensitivity to GABA. To further investigate the characteristics of the Hco-UNC-49 channel, this study tested the effects of vari

Two studies were conducted to investigate anthelmintic resistance in goat parasites in New Zealand. In Study 1 parasites from goats on a farm with a long history of problems with anthelmintic efficacy were used to infect sheep for a controlled slaughter study. Nineteen lambs were acquired, effectively drenched and housed. Each was infected with a mixture of larvae comprising Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Oesophagostomum venulosum. After 28 days lambs were restrictively randomised into 3 groups based on faecal egg counts. Group 1 was left un

Abstract:
Previous research has shown that even small numbers of lung and gastro-intestinal (GI) nematodes cause sub-clinical infections during autumn and can reduce voluntary feed intake (VFI) and liveweight gain (LWG) post-weaning in farmed deer. However, little is known about the effect of parasitism on growth of young farmed deer prior to weaning (summer and early autumn). At present, the control of deer parasites is largely by anthelmintic treatment. Alternatively, chicory sown as a pure sward has been shown to reduce parasitism and increase post-weaning growth of deer compared with perennial ryegr
