Full textAs t. De wyzewa pointed out as early as 1885, it is relevant to speak of mallarme's religion, but in this post-christian and postwagnerian religion, sociology and anthropology prevail over theology. After the metaphysical crisis of the sixties, at the end of which, having discovered that god is but an echo of the soul, the poet undertakes a thesis (he will soon give up) about language and divinity, mallarme's religion springs from les dieux antiques. In translating cox, whose purpose he incidentally twists to suit his own new conceptions of divinity, mallarme discovers the pattern of a true poetical anthropology of imagination in the tragedy of nature. Indeed, this tragedy does not only derive from the awe of a primitive soul, as it does for max muller and cox, but it also reveals the essential structure of the human soul, consisting in the basic struggle between light and darkness, being and nothingness, that underlies what mallarme calls the "one latent religion" of mankind. Thus, all the divagations will tend to show the imaginary archetype of the heavenly tragedy under the various shapes of contemporary religions (from catholicism to wagnerism, from the liturgy of sunday concerts to that of the theatre); but to the archeological trend of mallarme's anthropology, a purely religious utopia is added, which aims at exposing, at the very heart of the city, under the shape of a new mystery, the fictitious divinity of man as it arises from the modern awareness of nothingness. And there is no better instrument for this new theophany than poetry, for the mystery of man is, first and foremest, a mystery of letters: consequently, poetry, which, by means of metaphor and alliteration, makes us feel the unconscious link between the soul and heavens, can dream of a book which, as les dieux antiques, might be a solar apocalypse

Full textThe anthropology of the Beti tribe in Cameroon is related to Christian anthropology. Distances as well as connections between the two inform the methods of announcing the Gospel. The Beti man’s anthropology is remarkable. He owns a spiritual vision of man. For him, the true world is invisible. Death is not the end of existence. Passionately fond of life, particularly community life, the Beti people cherish the one who loves others and suffers for them. Their conception of man and of God is outstanding : man is a miracle. God is called Ntondobe, translate: “Love in action”. Obviously the Loving God of the Christians revealed himself to Beti People. This explains the spectacular conversion of this tribe. The Christian mission must take account of this cultural background. If not, his efforts would be vain, for it is true that : “The break between culture and Gospel is a tragedy ” (Paul VI)
Gregor, Brian. "Anthropologia Crucis: A Philosophical Anthropology of the Cross." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/3763.
Full textWhat does the word of the cross mean for philosophical anthropology? That is my question in this dissertation, which undertakes a philosophical engagement with a word that is both a scandal and folly for philosophical wisdom. My task is to give a hermeneutical description of what I call the cruciform self, and to examine the significance of the cross for several key themes of philosophical anthropology. Because my focus is thematic, I engage with several interlocutors--most prominently Paul Ricoeur and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but also Luther, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Levinas, and Charles Taylor. Given the pronounced theological aspects of this project, a recurring theme is the relation between philosophy and faith, reason and revelation. The word of the cross interrogates anthropology as well as philosophy, and so I present a hermeneutics of the cruciform self as well as a distinctly cruciform philosophy. Chapter 1 outlines the hermeneutical turn in philosophical anthropology, and argues that the self is constituted in being addressed by an external word. Chapter 2 then draws on Luther's theology of the cross to sketch an ontology of justification by faith, in which the self is constituted by eschatological possibility rather than achieved actuality, and stands outside of itself with its identity in another, in promise rather than presence. Chapter 3 interprets sin and evil according to the image of incurvature--i.e., the self curved in on itself, cut off from its true relations to God, others, and itself. Chapter 4 then argues that this incurvature must be broken open by an external word. There I draw on Bonhoeffer's phenomenological christology, which identifies this word as Christ, the Counter-Logos who reverses the intentionality and interrogation of the immanent human logos. The chapters in Part II then use Bonhoeffer's account of the ultimate and the penultimate to show how the word of the cross refigures philosophical thinking about the concreteness and continuity of faith (Ch.5), human capability, agency, and ethical responsibility (Ch.6), reflexivity, self-understanding, and intentionality (Ch.7), and the tension between faith and religion (Ch.8)

Prud'homme, Pierre. "La trace de Dieu : une anthropologie des régimes d'orthodoxie au Mali." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016AIXM3063.
Full textBetween 2012 and 2013, the malian crisis had many dimensions. Beyond the immediacy of the event, this thesis seeks to identify the religious dimension of this crisis, including the impact of these events on the religious sphere in the capital. In Bamako, the Islamic associations are part of a relatively confrontational field polarized between "Sufism" and "Wahhabism". Many agree that these terms have to be deconstructed. This is what I try to do in developing the concept of "regime of orthodoxy". A “regime of orthodoxy”, it is this "tinkering" giving rise to a new religious movement, which eventually register, willy-nilly, in the case of Mali, in this polarity. However, this one is not less performative being renewed during this period. To many observers, the "Wahhabi" sphere has many affinities with jihadist ideologies and requires some vigilance. The "Sufi" sphere, meanwhile, has for international institutions many strengths that earned them the label of "moderate Islam." The "trace of God" is the brand (body, clothing, or discursive one) that allows the observer to identify the membership of such actor to such a trend, and to measure his radicality, or more generally his intention. This is the indicator on which rests the diagnosis that feeds ultimately what we can call a "security Reason"

Full textHow does one shape oneself as a subject of God in a society that is purportedly « one of the most secularized in the world »? Does God have a power over human beings? What are the mechanics of moral change in the religious field? The research presented here is based on these general questions, using the Swedish Pentecostal milieu as a specific ethnographic case study. The Nordic context offers a heuristic comparative counterpoint for the anthropology of Christianity. It provides the discipline with ethnographic data allowing a critical discussion of the many studies carried out in developing countries. Indeed, Swedish Pentecostals can be observed engaging a conversation with significant forces different than elsewhere. In Sweden, social, political and economic variables are very different and the supernatural agents of customary systems of belief are absent. It is the secular, both as a subjectivation mode and as a more or less imagined « other » from the inside, that becomes the privileged interlocutor and prime alter ego in the shaping of Christian subjectivities. At the intersection of the anthropology of Christianity and moral anthropology, this work deals with the techniques of moral subjectivation, all of them being ways of making God present to the human world. This research questions the ways in which this self-fashioning and world-transformation apparatus, that Pentecostals call the « Work of God », permanently (re)adjusts itself along the porous and unstable boundary between the religious and the secular

Full textThe daily offering ritual, small ceremony integrated into the daily lives of most Balinese families, by its thorough analysis and comparison with other ritual and non-ritual levels of Balinese culture, helps shed light on some basic structuring principles of Balinese ritual life. The Balinese domestic space is a structured unit strongly determined by Balinese culture's essential principles, and it is also the knot that unites these principles and hence allows their transmission and maintenance. The daily domestic offerings create a specific atmosphere that presupposes the attention of invisible entities. An essential part of what constitutes Balinese culture is anchored into the domestic unit, and brought into attention by daily rituals. It is the case with the crucial hierarchical oppositions of high and low and the hierarchised cardinal directions, that are reflected even in non-ritual practice like daily orientation or the direction people turn when sleeping. The homology between the microcosm of the body and the microcosm of Bali or the Universe is mediated through the microcosm of the domestic space. The principle of ancestrality, the base through which Balinese are connected with a large series of social groups and even to the island, this principle is also anchored into the domestic space through the ancestor shrine, and the emotional bond connecting with the deceased ones is also integrated to it through complex funeral rituals. The aesthetic style and the structure of the offerings is there from the smallest canang offering, as is there the principle that leads to dance in larger ceremonies. This exploration reveals an incredibly rich and complex ritual life lead by ordinary respectable people who are not professionals in religion

Full textPastoral ministry in the reformed church of France is in crisis. Understated, this is called « pastoral malaise ». Three sets of factors provide this crisis : change of paradigm which the french society finds difficultly in adapting to, so that the ministry is roughly changed, deployement of the effects of secularization, a perfectible organization and management within the reformed church. A theological construction organizes these sets interpretation. An anthropologie is built, then confronted with biblical anthropology. So rises the soteriological question. This implies the christology. A structure of christian existence is defined from christology. The goal of ecclesiology is consequently to think and promote this structure of existence. On this basis, the author puts forward solutions which also integrate sociology of the organizations and management theories
Dioba, Mélanie Zita. "Interprétation et croyance : le sens de la religion chez Ludwig Feuerbach." Thesis, Lille 3, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LIL3H019/document.
Full textOur work deals with Feuerbachian criticism of religion. We consider that criticism from an articulation between interpretation and belief. This analysis reports on various, real or imaginary (but sometime necessary) relationship that consciousness has with itself, with others and the surrounding world. That is to highlight the genetics and critical method which claims to be a hermeneutics of meaning - as direction and meaning - which aims to unveil or uncover and update the true meaning of religion, which is an anthropological (and not theological) meaning. As natural and intrinsic expression of human essence, eternal function of human mind, the structure of religious consciousness must be reinterpreted, according to Feuerbach, in order to spell the end of/sound the death knell for false religion - which is characterized by a distorted relationship to the real - and return to the true religion, the religion of Man in which the latter can be fulfilled as a free and communal being. For Feuerbach, therefore, it is not a question of suppressing or forgetting religion, but of restoring it and perhaps reinventing it. To achieve this goal, Feuerbach proposed to anthropologvically read religion - rather than religiously or theologically. For that it was necessary to move thet criticism to a secular ground/field. Disputing the value, nor the historical value of religions data, is not the objective. Feuerbach wants to restore the meaning which aligns with human reality. It is on this basis that Feuerbach proposes his philosophy of the future in relation to this new religion of man which requires a feedback to the sensible. Then we can see - from the need and the urgency to let the meaning appears through the various experiences of subject consciousness - a humanism which is both atheistic and religious. But what seems to be the paradox deserves to be analyzed as a possibility for redefinition of the concepts of atheist and religious, in such a way that it is not necessarily oxymoronic - from a general point of view, but especially Feuerbachian one - to talk about a religious atheism. It also joins the development of more current topics/contemporary thems which, more and more, value and make room for this possibility of living religion or spirituality otherwise than in connection with dogmas or codified practices. Our thesis thus intends to grasp the intention, the value, the scale of Feuerbach's thought and especially the influence he had on other philosophical thoughts
Espinosa, Laurence. "Anthropologie d'une rencontre - Les Sotho dans les écrits des pionniers de la Société des Missions Evangéliques de Paris au XIXe siècle (1830-1880)." Thesis, Pau, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PAUU1004/document.
Full textThis anthropological study is an interrogation about a possible talks between Sotho of Southern Africa and missionaries of the French 'Société des missions évangéliques de Paris' during the 19th century. It is an exercise of transcription from renewed analysis of write-ups published in journals of evangelical missions. Three major preconceptions have guided this analysis so far. First of all, if meetings took place, what was the occurrence of such events? The first trail questions the modalities of the contacts with the Sotho together, the Sotho woman or with the chief Moshoeshoe. Then, if God has led clergymen to the Africans, omnipresent God is not only overhanging. The second point deals with the materiality of God so as to touch him and eventually reach the meeting. Finally the Sotho, hosts of the missionaries, became the hostages of the storytellers. Are the Sotho's opponents, the other Africans who were met by the evangelists, the ones whose absence may lead to reconsidering the idea of meeting?
Crippa, Sabina. "Pour une anthropologie de la voix en Grèce ancienne." Paris, EPHE, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2001EPHE5026.
Full textThis dissertation offers an original approach, based on the ethnography of the communication, to the theology of the voice in ancient Greece and develops a broader analysis of the conceptualisation of the voice. The dissertation includes three sections. The first section explores the theories of the voice formulated in the Greek world through theological and scientific considerations as well as in the lexicon of the voice. This semantic analysis mainly focuses on the lexemes of the phtheggomai family, due to their fundamental role in sacred contexts. The second section concerns the voice in the field of the prophecy. Focusing on the study of marginal prophetic voices, and particularly of the voice of the Sibyl, the author offers an interpretation of the ritual status and different modes of the prophetic voice. The third section, based on the Corpus of the Papyri Graecae Magicae addresses the contribution of the magic ritual context to the ancient Greek theory of divine voices and explores a number of ritual uses of the speech and specifically vocal rituals, as well as their relationship with writing and images. Within the double framework of linguistic and religious tradition, this ethnolinguistic approach sheds a new light on the complex status of the voice in the sacred contexts of ancient Greece. This work points out that the voice, and all its non linguistic utterances, represent the distinguishing feature of the divine enunciation and the ideal mode of communication with the divine. All these sacred voices imply a metalinguistic analysis of the voice, revealing a whole range of concepts of vocality which cannot be assimilated to that of the articulated and meaningful phonè imposed by the philosophical-grammatical tradition

Full textBased on an intensive field work related to ombwiri rituals performed in two provinces of Gabon, this dissertation discusses the relevance of common theorisation of African contemporary religions as expressions of syncretism. The author considers that syncretism cannot be applied unilaterally to African rituals, as it might only emphasize the diachronic level in cultural and linguistic borrowing, without outlying the synchronic one which makes the borrowing even possible. More consequently, syncretist theorisation neglects fundamental aspects of ritual creativity and specific empowerment to integrate what it likes or not, including outdoor elements resulting from historical and particularly cross-cultural conjunctions. Therefore, the author suggests to start up with a new conceptual framework of “interreligious correspondences”, so as to prevent scientific productions from colonial recurrent ideologies, and give evidence of cognitive mechanisms which habilitate African minds as others, to go on integrating new with old, extraordinary with ordinary, and all kinds of resources, in a permanent creative dynamism including the indefinite limit that one likes to give to oneself

Full textThis thesis offers a socio-historic anthropology of the worship of two saints not recognized by the Church, Gaucho Gil and San la Muerte, in the province of Corrientes, in the North-East of Argentina. It aims at analyzing the genesis of these phenomena and at defining the contribution of popular religion in the construction of collective identities. It means to question the political dimension and the historicity of these symbolic and ritual systems by specifying the links they maintain with the guarani culture and with the resistance to a situation of social oppression. The study begins with a socio-historic exploration of the constitution of Argentina inland populations in order to understand to what extent these cults were born in a context of social and cultural contempt and denial of memory which has categorized the rural popular classes as subordinate and invisible. Secondly, the making of the legends, images and ritual practices related to gaucho Gil and San la Muerte are explained both through historic anthropology and a local ethnographical analysis. Finally, this contextualized exploration leads to consider these worships no longer as simple means of resistance to an established order or as distorted reproductions of the Catholic religion, but as autonomous cultural creations which belong to a new and mixed people, producing a memory and symbols which accurately represent the experience of their condition

Full textThe present study is designed to examine the healing rite of "segnatura" that is part of the popular tradition of rural medicine. Up until 1950 there were many women that knew and practised this ritual form of healing to to cure herpes zoster (cold sores), burns and warts. The action combines symbolic gesture and ritual formula: it is called "segnatura" from the verb "segnare", to mark. The aim of the analysis is to explore the rite trough interviews. Now it represents a custom at constant risk of disappearance, but the heritage of ritual forms of healing can create a connection with the present, because it addresses the sick role and its needs

Full textThe anthropological background of faith is the presence of what is missing, that is desire. But desire can never lead to the knowledge of oneself. As an opening to god, desire can also be seen as opaqueness to god, hence the necessity to articulate revelation. The absolute manifests itself in revelation so much so that it is not man who opens himself to revelation but revelation which opens itself to man. Revelation spells out the beauty of the world, which allows one to conceive art not as an opening to god but as the conservation of such opening. But it is finally ethics which is opening through taking desire beyond itself, to such a point where one feels disquietened in front of another one who cannot be identified with anyone else
Arenari, Brand. "Pentecostalism as religion of periphery." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17182.
Full textAll the analyses we have developed throughout this dissertation point to a central element in the emergence and development of Pentecostalism, i.e., its raw material – the promise of religious salvation – is based on the idea of social ascension, particularly the ascension related to the integration of sub-integrated social groups to the dynamics of society. The new religion that arose in the USA focused on the needs and social dramas that were specific of the newly arrived to the urban world of the large North-American cities, those who inhabited the periphery of these cities, those that were socially, economically, and ethnically excluded from the core of society. We also analyzed how the same social drama was the basis for the development of Pentecostalism in Latin America and, especially, in Brazil. In this country, a great mass of excluded individuals, also residents of urban peripheries (which proves the non-traditional and modern characteristic of these sectors), found in Pentecostalism the promises of answers to their dramas, mainly the anxiety to become integrated to a world in which they did not belong before. Such integration was embedded in the promise present in the modernity of social ascension. This scenario leads us to the conclusion that Pentecostalism was a religious discourse capable of taking the main promise of modernity to social groups or classes “forgotten” by modern society. Through a religious discourse, Pentecostalism fulfilled the notions of social mobility, and its consequent idea of individual ascension to the mass of people not yet fully integrated to the modern world, but living in it. Following, it became the Christian religion of blacks and mestizos, of the poor and all the others who felt out of place in that world. So the Pentecostalism became a religion of periphery par excellence.

Full textAlthough divinatory practices have been excluded from institutional religions from the beginning of the 20th century and condemned as superstition by the nationalist and communist governments, they have been experiencing a new wave of popularity in Taiwan since the 1990s, and more recently in Mainland China. This research is based on fieldwork conducted with fortune-tellers and their clients in Taipei, Beijing and Kaifeng, on the study of mantic texts and on a comparison with divination practices in India and South Korea. This work first focuses on the legitimization process of divinatory arts and on the way they have been adapted to modern fields of knowledge. It looks into the work and status of fortune-tellers, the circulation of mantic knowledge, as well as changes in the transmission of divinatory arts and attempts to integrate them in the academic field. It shows how today’s fortune-tellers seek to legitimize their art through categories such as science, Confucianism and cultural heritage. Beyond the institutional categorization of divinatory knowledge, this work also explores the cognitive mechanisms involved in divination practices, based on the study of mantic techniques and on clients’consultations. It underlines how divination systems operate and how they help petitioners to make decisions and monitor their fate. This research shows that divination systems do not only work as an information tool that guides the people involved through the social world, but they also provide significant insights into the social organization

Full textThis thesis presents, in the form of an ethnographic chronicle, the analysis of part of the survey carried out into the deanery and parish of Questembert, in the south-west of Morbihan in Bretagne, France. This study, conduced between 2003 and 2007, first consisted in an investigation about « acts of believing », empirical and simultaneously about our survey practices, on description and interpretation of ordinary religious activities.I tell the steps of such an interrogative course, the transformations of the definition of this research object « fleeing » and the extension of the scope of the investigation : from « belief » to « ordinary langage » to « action », and to dynamics of involvment into Church movements and parish activities and, jointly, dynamics of « taking charge » of one’s own faith – of a religious langage, prayer practices, etc.The gradual discovery of actual problems, of concrete motives and issues of commitment of my interlocutors, then allows to clear coordinates of a situation imbricating local and general issues : between « exculturation » (D. Hervieu-Léger) of catholicism, crisis and renewed efforts of parish mobilization and dynamism of actors and movements of traditionnal sensitivity under the Pontificate of John-Paul II then Benedict XVI, and tensions between protagonists of different spiritual sensitivities. The pastoral and militant enterprises observed, the interrelations sometimes conflictual between actors are part too of this context politicaly dominated by the right and of religious integration formerly important of the south-west of Morbihan, and of a municipal context of partisan antagonism then very marked. The analysis of actual dynamics of engagement and « take in charge » and those, passed, of trajectories imbricating family, professionnal or militant life leads us to highlight some of the recurring logics, the spiritual grounds and former social environments of catholic mobilization, and illuminate by contrast the difficulties observed. The evolutions of this research, from « belief » – « object not found » but leading to refine ethnographic descriptions – to dynamics of action and involvment, were accompagned with a critical feeback on my initial survey practice, inherited from objectivating and decontextualizing traditions in anthropology and sociology. The restitution of the stages of this route makes it possible to argue precisely the processual approach, articulated to action, and the form of writing that I reached. It makes it possible too to support a criticism of my initial practice in that it induces in particular blindness to action, in the strong sense, mainly here in the case of an entreprise combining religious and partisans issues at the heart of the parish environment

Full textThis work is based on an investigation commissioned by a cognac manufacturer. Heavily hit by the anti-corruption campaign launched by Chinese top leaders at the end of 2012, this manufacturer was seeking to develop a cognac product dedicated to the Sinophone (Chinese, Singaporean and Taiwanese) market of nightclubs and bars. Using an approach that subjects the marketing problem to the ethnographic method, we first performed an ethnography of the alcohol consumption of young Sinophone people in nightclubs and bars. This investigation was then supplemented by another one on the consumption of alcohol by the Chinese in general. The inductive method which we have employed has allowed us to use these ethnographic materials as a generator of research questions which we had not expected. Thus, apart from the descriptive part that synthesises the different modes of alcohol consumption that we have observed, this thesis is also composed of another theoretical part. On the basis of the questions raised by the first descriptive part, this theoretical part aims at sketching a theory of the “economic” embedding of the “social”, which runs counter to the sociologist trends characterising the postwar anthropology. In order to break with both the evolutionist and anti-evolutionist excesses of anthropological history, this thesis consists, among other things, in a revision of the monetary theory, the function of which would be to account for the geopolitical synergy between the “one-party China” and the “multi-party West” at present

Full textFrom an operational definition of religion considered as "the relationship with spirits", the author introduces a sociological analysis of afro-cuban religions (spiritism, palo monte, santeria and ifa cult) in la havana which emphasizes their differences and complementarities. He then studies the influence of writing upon some of these religions. The first part of the dissertation is a historical survey of scientific studies which have dealt with these religions since the beginning of the century. At first sharing the point of view of criminologists, anthropologists have evolved more scientific theories until the 1950s after they got rid of their ethnocentrism. The appraisal of the socialist period is difficult. Though, at the beginning of the 1960s and from the end of the 1980s, many scientific studies of prime importance have been written, nationalism and marxism have quite often hindered scientific research on religions. In the second part, the author draws a map of the afro-cuban religious space which is based on his fieldwork in la havana from 1993 to 1996. An initiate in santeria and ifa cult, he demonstrates that sexual differences and differences between the dead and the gods rule the relationships between afro-cuban religions. He shows precisely why santeria is dominated by women. The relationship with the gods is varied and santeros have sometimes to assume the role of the god's spouse during specific rites. The concept of person in santeria and ifa cult is analysed through the relationships between gods and the human body. The third pard is dedicated to written tradition in these religions. The author demonstrates that documents which circulate in the community of practising people belong mostly to santeria and even more to ifa cult and that the first written documents can be dated back to the beginning of the 19th century. In the xxth century, the writers of handbooks have been using more efficient printing techniques and have brought african anthropology studies into their handbooks. At last, the author introduces the implications of writing upon the diachronic and synchronic handing down of religious informations and the way they are organised (lists, inventories, tables)

Full textThis study of religion in Masse und Macht and the Aufzeichnungen has two major objectives. Firstly it allows a view of Canetti's theoretical works in the anthropological perspective through an exploration of Canetti's library in Zurich and a focus on the theme of religion. It undertakes an analysis of how the content of books in this library is quoted, along with a research of the hidden sources of Masse und Macht. It demonstrates the systematic exposure of religions as closed systems of crowds-manipulation and as managers of death allied with the mighty. But it also reveals the fascination of Canetti for the rituals, the tale of myths and the religions close to shamanism which offers the opportunity of metamorphosis to human beings. Secondly, the Aufzeichnungen open a dialog with Canetti's readings which ends up in a form of expression where the discontinuous aesthetic lays out the more intimate outlines of the author's “religion”, tinged with Judaism in his face-to-face with God and the Bible, shamanism and oriental influences

Full textThe central object of this thesis is the “Persévérance” Collection, a group of pieces that were stolen from Afro-Brazilian houses of worship in Maceió, capital of the state of Alagoas, in the northeast of Brazil. The pillaging of these objects occurred in an episode of political-religious repression in 1912, known as Quebra de Xangô. This Collection is exposed by the Museum of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Alagoas and since its pillage it has not been subject of any scientific studies. In this way, this research has tried to fill the existing gaps on the subject, tracing its path so far and demonstrating the great transformations experienced by the worship of xangô alagoano, both at the liturgical and ritual levels. For the production of those objects inventory an investigation was carried out to try to find the original uses and toproperly reference the pieces. This investigation was produced with the participation of the Afro-Brazilian religious community, focusing on their traditional knowledge, mythology and cosmological system to discover and construct the biography of those objects. Therefore, the xangô alagoano is presented here, tracing its peculiarities, fruit of my ten years of field experience

Full textThe notion of the + calendar year ; is one of the most used notions in an economic time-span, both in terms of theoretical analysis (it serves as a basis to mesure the growth that is part of it), as well as for the practice of the various protagonists (for instance, in the field of accountancy processing). The pre-eminence of the + yearly basis ; is to be noted, of course, in the qualitative term of + natural ;, wich is often attached to it. Yet, it appears that this + naturalism ; is not quite as obvious as it seems. Historian approaches, as attempted here today, show that it is, indeed, the result of human construction, most often of an antagonistic nature. This would explain why, today, this principle is contradicted in many circles. The thesis looks at three successive approaches: an assessment as to how the notion of an economic time-span appeared in history, specifically a study of debates around the creation of double entry book-keeping, bearing in mind some of the + replies ; given to it by economic sciences (with regards to time analysis in economics) ; the ways in which the notion of+ economic time ; was effectively created, in opposition to, or in support of, other representations put forward by thinking minds of the time; there, the analysis is focused on religious representations that remained dominant for a long time, in particular during some historical schismatic moments (protestant reform, islam); the two previous stages lead to the main issue: how did the + economic time unit ; come about? this research is being carried out, partly, through some of the gains of economic anthropology. If, at present, + yearly-based accountancy ; appears under threat, the consequences of this questioning remain nonetheless to be assessed, in terms of economic pratices and analyses

Full textIn place of the typical Western image of God as an external personal being governing the universe by means of his omnipotent will and omniscient intellect, Watts argues in favour of the Eastern image of God as the mysterious depth and ground of all being.
If education is concerned with the task of enabling a person to grow and mature as a full human being and religion is concerned with fostering the uniquely human capacity to be fully present and open to the mystery and wonder of existence, then it follows that being educated and becoming religious are part of the same process. For Watts, religious education is characterized not according to a specific content but rather an underlying set of values which promote an awareness of humanity's interrelationship and interdependence with the rest of the universe.
