Abstract:
The study of gravitational waves in the presence of a cosmological constant has led to interesting forms of the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter line elements based on families of null hypersurfaces. The forms are interesting because they focus attention on the geometry of null hypersurfaces in spacetimes of constant curvature. Two examples are worked out in some detail. The first originated in the study of collisions of impulsive gravitational waves in which the post-collision spacetime is a solution of Einstein’s field equations with a cosmological constant, and the second originated in the gene

We establish the inequality for Henneaux–Teitelboim's total energy–momentum for asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data sets which are asymptotic to arbitrary t-slice in anti-de Sitter spacetime. In particular, when t = 0, it generalizes Chruściel–Maerten–Tod's inequality in the center of AdS mass coordinates. We also show that the determinant of energy–momentum endomorphism Q is the geometric invariant of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes.

The entropy of a free scalar field is calculated in the Reissner–Nordström–(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. Due to the presence of the cosmological horizon in the Reissner–Nordström–de Sitter spacetime, we introduce a cutoff at the cosmological horizon, besides the cutoff at the horizon of black holes in the brick wall model. The entropy is found to be the sum of two terms, which are proportional to the area of the cosmological horizon and of black hole horizon, respectively. In the Reissner–Nordström–anti-de Sitter spacetime the contribution of the anti-de Sitter background to the entropy of scal

The stability of the plane anti-de Sitter spacetime and the gravitational collapse in the plane symmetric anti-de Sitter spacetime are investigated. A scalar curvature singularity will be formed at the r=0 plane when the anti-de Sitter spacetime is perturbed by null dust. By employing the method suggested recently by Husain we find a family of non-static exact solution of the null fluid collapse with equation of state P=kρ in the plane anti-de Sitter spacetime. The late time limit of the solutions results in a black plane solution possessing multiple horizon structure.

Anti-de Sitter spacetime is important in general relativity and modern field theory. We review its geometrical features and properties of light signals and free particles moving in it. By applying only the elementary tools of tensor calculus, we derive ab initio of all these properties and show that they are really weird. One finds superluminal velocities of light and particles, infinite particle energy necessary to escape at infinite distance and spacetime regions inaccessible by a free fall, though reachable by an accelerated spaceship. The covariant free fields of any spin on anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are studied, pointing out that these transform under isometries according to covariant representations (CRs) of the AdS isometry group, induced by those of the Lorentz group. Applying the method of ladder operators, it is shown that the CRs with unique spin are equivalent with discrete unitary irreducible representations (UIRs) of positive energy of the universal covering group of the isometry one. The action of the Casimir operators is studied finding how the weights of these representations (reps.) may depend on the mas

This work discusses the black hole thermodynamics in a weak dynamical Anti-de Sitter spacetime, which should be described by the nonequilibrium thermodynamics, because the metric depends on the time coordinate. Taking the Vaidya-Anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime as an example, the local entropy balance equations and principle of minimum entropy generation are derived, and finally, some irreversible effects in nonequilibrium thermodynamics are studied by using the Onsager reciprocal relation.

Since it has been proven that the no-hair conjecture has exceptions, systems of gravity coupled with matter have been of great interest. This thesis studies one of these exceptions: the case of a scalar field with nonconvex self interaction potential minimally coupled with gravity in anti-de Sitter spacetime. By considering a convex potential we prove a no-hair theorem for the four possible scalar field cases. For nonconvex potential however, stable soliton and black hole solutions are found. We focus on the stable black hole solutions. We find the explicit expressions for the mass of these sp

In this thesis we study several open problems using Numerical Relativity on asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. The understanding of the dynamics of AdS is interesting not only because of pure theoretical reasons but also because of its importance in the correspondence gauge/gravity. In the thesis we present three different topics. The first is our research on the gravitational collapse of massless scalar fields in AAdS spacetimes. We have developed a new method that combines two different formulations of the Einstein Field Equations to get closer and with more accuracy to the coll

There exists a large scientific literature on black holes, including many excellent textbooks of various levels of difficulty. However, most of these prefer physical intuition to mathematical rigour.
